Message

Each year, when the time for the MARHO Cup Championships rolls around, I am always amazed at how far this event has come, how big it has grown, and how much status it has acquired as a premier sporting event.

This event began as a simple idea born from the brainstorming of MARHO president emeritus Aristeo “Putch” Puyat and myself way back in 1996. Putch and I are both horseowners and breeders, and at the time we sought a way to promote breeding as an activity among horseowners.

There weren’t a lot of us breeders at the time, and there were many obstacles and challenges to setting up our breeding operations. Yet we stuck it out, doing our best to upgrade local bloodstock by importing horses of quality lineages from abroad, investing what we could in order to bring to this country the best and most successful bloodlines from international racing.

And now, it has been fifteen years since the first time Putch and I stood on a makeshift stage at the old Santa Ana Park in Makati City and handed out trophies. Time does fly when you’re having fun!

I am amazed – and filled with pride and happiness for work well done, and with profoundest gratitude for the outpouring of support from the racing community and sponsors each year.

MARHO’s annual staging of the championships since 1996 is made possible by the presence of reliable and loyal sponsors, to whom we extend our thanks – San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Racing Commission, and Philippine Racing Club.

We are also grateful for the participation once more of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Hygain Feeds, and the Ciara Marie Foundation.

Despite the economic crisis, these are exciting times for the sport, and for us breeders and horseowners, the challenge remains to push the envelope further, erase boundaries, and set the standards even higher as we seek to breed horses that are stronger, faster, better.

MARHO Cup Kinse - has it been that long? We feel we’ve only begun. There is still much to do, and we look forward to the future with high hopes.

Celebrate horseracing with us this MARHO Cup week as we once more showcase the best Philippine-bred horses in six championship races, and quality local, island-born, and imports in over forty trophy races.

Come, the horses are at the gate!

MessageWelcome, participants, sponsors, guests, and racing fans, to MARHO Kinse: the fifteenth

running of the MARHO Cup Championships.

Over the years, the event has gone from strength to strength and is now the premier racing festival on the calendar. We know this would not have been possible without everyone’s support.

MARHO thanks its sponsors: San Miguel Corporation and its chairman and CEO, Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr., and its president Ramon S. Ang, for supporting the MARHO Cup Championships since its inception in 1996, allowing the branding tie-up of SMC’s San Miguel Beer with this flagship activity of the MARHO;

Philippine Racing Commission chairman Atty. Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II and commissioners Atty. Victor Tantoco, Dr. Reynaldo Fernando, Eduardo Domingo Jr., and James Irving Paman for Philracom’s reliable assistance throughout the years, not only by way of this event but in other matters related to the industry;

Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chairman Margarita P. Juico for the PCSO’s kind participation once more;

Philippine Racing Club president Solomon Cua and executive vice-president and COO Atty. Ramon P. Ereñeta Jr. for making Santa Ana Park a welcoming venue for the MARHO races, providing financial and logistical support as the MARHO’s home track;

Past MARHO president, Mayor Benhur Abalos, for his staunch and loyal dedication to MARHO by way of entering in the races and giving sponsorship for two trophy races via his Hygain Feeds and the Ciara Marie Foundation;

And to our other sponsors and participants, our deepest gratitude for helping us make the staging of the MARHO Cup Races this year a reality.

Last September, MARHO held its election of officers and I was honored by the membership by being chosen to serve MARHO once more, formerly as its executive vice-president and now as its new president. I pledge to uphold MARHO’s traditions, first and foremost of which is the never-ending vigilance on industry matters, always seeking the best for the collective good of racing community.

Friends, we hope you enjoy this year’s MARHO Cup races, and may good fortune and blessings be ours to share.

Message

Welcome, everyone, to the 15th MARHO Cup Championships, a most significant occasion in the history of the MARHO.

When this program was launched as the MARHO Breeders’ Cup in 1996 during my term as MARHO president, little did I know what a huge event it would eventually become. I had hoped for this, of course, and realized it had the potential to expand, yet the reality of how enormous it is now still fills me with mixed emotions of wonder, pleasure, and pride.

Yet it is also with humility that I reflect upon how successful the MARHO Cup program is now. It is only with the support of kind-hearted sponsors that the event can offer, yearly, generous prize money as incentives for owners and breeders of local-bred horses via the six championship races. It is with the enthusiastic participation of horseowners and the tireless assistance of the racing club that the races are formed and conducted. My thanks to all of you for your support of and trust in MARHO all these years.

Apart from incentivizing local breeding, MARHO also encourages the further development of local Philippine bloodstock through importation by organizing trophy races that imports and island-born horses may join.

In this integrative manner, MARHO does its share to promote and uplift the allied activities of horseracing and Thoroughbred breeding.

This year, please join us as we bring you once again the best of Philippine racing, as we celebrate our mutual enjoyment of the sport through the MARHO Kinse event.

Warmest greetings to the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO) on your staging of the 2010 MARHO Cup Championships.

Acknowledged the centerpiece event of the country’s horseracing and breeding industry since its inception in 1996, this festival showcases the best thoroughbred horses in the country.

As your founding chairman, I am truly glad that you have continued our thrust to provide support for the needs of horseowners and breeders in the industry. Indeed, your association has grown by leaps and bounds since we pushed in 1974 for the creation of a specialized group that would support the growing sport of horseracing.

As a long-time horse breeder and a horseracing aficionado myself, I am happy that we have organizations like the MARHO in the Philippines that would assist horseowners and breeders and promote the sport in the country.

Mabuhay and more power to all of you!

Cordial greetings to the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners, Inc. (MARHO) as you hold the 2010 MARHO Cup.

The MARHO Cup, now on its 15th year, has always been sponsored by San Miguel Corporation ever since its inception. Aptly renamed as the San Miguel Beer-MARHO Cup, it will also have two of the six championship races named after San Miguel as proof of this enduring partnership.

MARHO’s staging of the event through the years, with SMC’s support, has contributed much to the improvement of the sport in terms of performance and track times as the generous prize money gives incentives to horseowners and breeders to acquire quality bloodstock.

May you continue revitalizing the horse racing and breeding industry by giving annual awards and recognition to champion horses, jockeys and trainers.

Best wishes to the directors and members of MARHO for another successful racing festival!

Since its establishment in 1974 by businessman and diplomat Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr. with fourteen other horsemen, MARHO has grown to be the oldest and largest such group and an industry leader.

Through the years, its officers, with the loyal support of its members, have laid a solid foundation of racing traditions that today are among of the most anticipated each year.

The MARHO Breeders’

Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos, who was elected MARHO president in 2005, arranged that year’s edition of the MBC, the tenth anniversary of the event. “A Decade of Champions” was the theme for that year, in celebration of ten glorious years of producing champions and rewarding excellence in the sport.

He also took charge of MARHO activities from 2006 to 2009, including the MARHO Founders’ Cup and the Jade MARHO Breeders’ Cup of 2009, commemorating MARHO’s 35th anniversary.

How It BeganSometime in the early 1970s, a group of dedicated

horsemen encountered problems in sourcing a consistent supply of oats for their racehorses. Bound by a common need, together they sought a solution to their dilemma. Their attempt at cooperation worked so well that they decided to extend the process further to establish in 1974 the first horseowners’ organization in the country - the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO).

The founding members were Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., Antonio Araneta, Macario Asistio, Angel Castano, Jose Cojuangco Jr., Pedro Cojuangco, Elias Coscolluela, Emilio Espinosa, Asterio Favis, Eric Moreno, Jose Revilla, Isidro Rodriguez, Constante Rubio, Samuel Sharuff, and Conrado Trinidad. The relative success of their initial venture encouraged them to undertake other projects with the objective of benefiting the industry as a whole.

One of MARHO’s first efforts as a group involved inviting from other countries a professional farrier and large-animal veterinarians to disseminate their knowledge to local industry members.

Creation of the Philippine Racing Commission

Inspired by these undertakings, the then-president of MARHO, Amb. Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., and some other notable MARHO stalwarts pushed for the creation of a specialized government agency that would oversee the growing sport of horseracing. They believed that nothing less would secure the trust of the racing public and speed up the process of improvement needed to make the country at par with the rest of the racing world.

Thus the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) was created in March 1974 under Presidential Decree No. 420. One of the reasons it was established was to ensure the clean, fair, and unbiased operation of racing and to raise the standards of the sport to international levels.

To acknowledge MARHO’s tremendous role

The Story of MARHO in the creation of the Philracom, Cojuangco was named its first Chairman, while MARHO members Favis, Alfonso Lacson, and Federico Moreno were appointed Commissioners.

At first, the law provided that only MARHO recommendees would be qualified for appointment to the Philracom. In 1991, the law was amended to allow representation from all other sectors of the industry.

Upon his appointment to the Philracom, Amb. Cojuangco passed on the presidency of the MARHO to Antonio Araneta, himself a noted sportsman. After Araneta’s stint of service, Justice Federico Moreno took over the reins. His dynamic leadership revitalized

the association, which spearheaded such projects as the giving

of annual awards and recognition to champion

horses, jockeys, and trainers, among others.

Moreno and the rest of MARHO also

pushed for the reduction of horseracing taxes, a

move which resulted in the enactment of Exec. Order No. 194, which in 1988 restructured the level of betting duties.

In 1989, then-President Corazon Aquino reappointed

Moreno to the Philracom. The leadership of MARHO fell to an equally

dedicated horseowner and breeder – Aristeo “Putch” Puyat, who, as president, steadfastly steered MARHO through the group’s turbulent years, along with MARHO chairman Leonardo “Sandy” Javier Jr.

Puyat and Javier also spearheaded the inception of the MARHO Breeders’ Cup program in 1996 as well as the running of

the First MARHO Founders’ Cup festival in 2004, on the association’s 30th Anniversary.

The event was dubbed the Pearl Stakes. b

PUT together speed plus the best horses plus talented jockeys plus well-balanced

handicapping and you’ve got the equation for a successful racing event – and that’s what was enacted during the MARHO’s Jade Breeders’ Cup races last 24-29 November 2009 at the Philippine Racing Club’s Santa Ana Park in Naic, Cavite. The event coincided with the celebration of MARHO’s 35th anniversary.

Now an annual tradition among racing fans and participants since it was launched by MARHO’s Aristeo Puyat and Sandy Javier in 1996, the six championships showcased a scintillating cast of the best among the elite Thoroughbred runners in the

country.The MBC Sprint (1,000 meters)

was won by defending champion EJ’s Magic (Self Feeder – Heir Apparent). Owned by CT Castro, trained by Ernesto Roxas, and ridden by jockey Fernando Raquel Jr., the 5YO veteran blasted past opponents Tiger Song, Minsk City, Sutter’s Royal, and Eternal Flame to cop the P200,000 first prize. Million Dollar, a previous winner of the event, was scratched the day before the race.

The Philracom-MBC Juvenile Fillies (1,300 m) was hotly contested, but at the end, MP Sanchez’s Tiger Moon (Rum Tum Tiger-Last Snip) prevailed, guided by promising

youngster John Paul Guce and conditioned by long-time trainer Johnny Sordan.

Honors in the Philracom-MBC Juvenile Colts went to the favorite, Herminio Esguerra’s Carriedo (Deputy Bodman – Astuce). Steered by Jesse Guce and trained by Dave de la Cruz, the feisty bay colt easily undermined his rivals.

The MBC Filly Mile was a revelation, with top favorite Heaven Sent fading in the stretch to allow the John Cordero-piloted Nuclear Power (Wind Blown – My Sweet Girl) to come from behind. This was another win for the Esguerra racing stable and for trainer de la Cruz.

Dream Supreme (Baseball Champion – Belle of Ack) reigned in the Santa Ana Park – MBC Colt Mile. Another John Cordero-ridden mount, this one owned and bred by Nathaniel Velasco and trained by Jose Mario Jacob, the brave bay colt charged

past seven other rivals to claim the P500,000 first prize.

In the 2,000-meter San Miguel Beer-MBC Classic, the victory and P1 million first prize went to the favorite, Lorraine Uy Wi’s Don Enrico (Wind Blown-Kayumanggi), ridden by Raquel and trained by Arturo Sordan Jr. The son of track icon Wind Blown (Hazm- Windinmyhair), the winningest champion in local racing, Don Enrico plainly showed he carries his father’s genes in his astounding wire-to-wire run that saw him pulling away in the stretch to win by over ten lengths.

Esguerra’s Batangas-based Herma Farms and Stud claimed five of the six breeders’ trophies, save only for the Colt Mile. The awards were accepted by the foreman, studmaster, and other ranch hands – Dante, Ariel, Edwin, Simo, Wendell, and Eddie – who were proud to see that the foals they tended had grown up to be MARHO champions. b

A MEMORABLE line from the classic Glen Ford movie “The Fastest Gun Alive” goes:

“No matter how fast you are, there will always be someone faster.” That line will be put to the test anew when EJ’s Magic (Self Feeder – Heir Apparent) guns for a third straight win in the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO) Sprint race sponsored by the Philippine Racing Club’s Santa Ana Park.

EJ’s Magic owner Cesar Daniel Castro and rider Fernando Raquel Jr.

will probably be saying, “No one’s faster than we are!”as their charger tries to claim the prize money pot for the third year in a row.

And just like last year, Eternal Flame will be giving EJ’s Magic a run for the money.

Eternal Flame, owned by Hermie Esguerra and to be ridden by Jesse Guce, is expected to be the second favorite in sales. The champion mare, a veteran stakes contender, has been in good form lately.

Other runners entered in the field

are Rita Pilapil’s Lively Dude with John Anthony Guce on board, Bienvenido Niles Jr.’s Bumble Bee with Jeffril Zarate, and Nap Chua’s Music King with Pat Dilema.

Music King, the most veteran among the competing horses, is a sentimental favorite. He possesses good gate speed and could score an upset over the defending champion.

Has time slowed down the six-year old EJ’s Magic? Or has age simply made him better? This race will test his talents to the utmost. b

NOW here’s an unpredictable race! Oddsmakers say that if there’s one race in today’s

PCSO-MARHO Cup Filly Mile that will be highly difficult to handicap, it is this one, sponsored by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

But Mayor Benhur Abalos won’t mind the helter-skelter prediction because it probably lessens the pressure on his galloper, Redemption, to be steered by Jesse Guce.

Redemption will most likely run as the favorite on account of her being the most tested among the entries. She has gone up against the likes of Triple Crown contenders Scotland Yard and Thief in the Nite, among others.

In a tune-up prior this race, Redemption finished second to Thief

In the Nite after coupled entries Scotland Yard and Darleb were scratched.

Westerly Wind, owned by Jose Ramon Mamon and partnered with Kelvin Abobo,

will be a worthy adversary. Not to be discounted are the chances

of Rona Yanagizawa’s Woodsy Ribbon, to be ridden by Rodeo Fernandez, who upset favored Señor Vicente in a 1,200-meter race last November 13 and that has boosted her stock.

PCSO – MARHO Cup FILLY MILE

Other competitors in this race are Francisco Maristela’s May Bukas Pa with Jeffril Zarate; Aristeo Puyat’s Apo Bell with Antonio Alcasid Jr., and Leonora Pasion’s My Sweet Leonora with JG Tinte.

Last year, Nuclear Power fashioned out a come-from-behind win to upset the heavily-favored Heaven Sent. The same unpredictable scenario looms anew, and adds extra excitement to this race. b

YES Pogi has already moved on, his failure to complete the Triple Crown a thing of the past.

Now, his agenda is to rule as many prestigious races as possible to remain embedded in the consciousness of racing fans.

This time, he will shoot for a win in the San Miguel Beer- MARHO Cup Colt Mile where he faces four equally determined entries.

Darleb (orange silks) is a formidable contender with a good chance of scoring.

 MARHO Cup 2010

The main question, however, is whether Yes Pogi will again fall prey to another horse named after yet another old Manila street.

After topping the first two legs of this year’s Triple Crown, Yes Pogi, owned by Francis Lim, was denied racing immortality by Carriedo, owned by Herminio Esguerra, in the third leg after a heartbreaking photo finish.

In this race, Yes Pogi will go up against Esguerra’s Gastambide, who will most likely run as the second favorite. Fernando Raquel, Jr. will ride Yes Pogi while John Paul Guce will steer Gastambide.

The three other entries are out to essay the role of spoilers in the race sponsored by San Miguel Beer. These are Joseph Dyhengco’s Darleb with Jeffril Zarate, Wilbert Tan’s Thoti’s Best with Dan Camanero, and Aristeo Puyat’s Flair Bottoms with Antonio Alcasid, Jr.

In a tune-up mile race last November 12, Gastambide clocked 1:42 to beat Shining Armour. Thotis’s Best finished third. A day earlier, Flair Bottoms competed in a mile race and fared dismally. On the same day,

Darleb and its coupled entry Scotland Yard were scratched from another mile race.

This is probably why oddsmakers are firm on a one-on-one battle for supremacy between Yes Pogi and Gastambide for the right to succeed last year’s winner, Dream Supreme. b

WILL all roads lead to Dimasalang when the Philracom-MARHO

Cup Juvenile Fillies race takes off?

That is the big question as the Herminio Esguerra entry, to be

guided by Jonathan Hernandez, looms as the favorite in the

1,600-meter race sponsored by the Philippine Racing Commission.

As a tune-up, Dimasalang topped a race at the Santa Ana Park last November 12, beating Fierce and Fiery. But that race was run over a shorter 1,200-meter distance.

The extra meters in this race could provide the difference, what with Bienvenido Niles Jr.’s Homerun Queen, to be steered by Jeffril Zarate, on the prowl. Homerun Queen finished fourth to Dimasalang in that tune-up run.

Other gallopers included in the field vying for top honors are

Honorato Neri’s Kitty West with Antonio Alcasid, Jr.; Wilbert Tan’s Gandang Pinay with Jesse Guce; Sixto Esquivias’ Antoine Dugo with Fernando Raquel, Jr.; Enrique Javier’s

MANDALUYONG Mayor Benhur Abalos must be a fan of the National Basketball

Association, particularly the first-ever Dream Team that captured the basketball gold in Barcelona, Spain. That is probably the reason why he has lately been naming his horses after NBA superstars - one such being Barkley.

Barkley is expected to be the top choice in the Philracom-MARHO Cup Juvenile Colts race to be run over a mile.

Based on past performances, Barkley has not been an eye-popper, despite the fact that he has always gotten the nod of racing fans.

But like Sir Charles’ monicker in the NBA which goes “the round mound of rebound,” Barkley might just be primed for a rebound from its previous performances and prove

Immaculate with Pat Dilema; Mayor Benhur Abalos’ Elusive Wind with Ariel Tancioco; and Emmanuel Santos’ Seeds of Wisdom with Andre Sullano.

Gandang Pinay and Antoine Dugo have already been tested in several big races early this year and have proven their worth, and this is why they will be getting their fair share of backers. Given an outside chance is Seeds of Wisdom, a regular at the other track but will be tested in what may seem as unfamiliar territory. Elusive Wind, Kitty West, and Immaculate have been tuning up lately and will offer stiff competition. b

that he is a force to reckon with in next year’s Triple Crown series. At the hands of jockey Jesse Guce, that might be a reality.

But the five other entries are just as good. SC Stockfarm’s Lord Of War, to be guided by Jonathan Hernandez, looms as the biggest threat to Barkley’s hopes for dominance among the juvenile elite.

In the wings as potential threats are Rita Bustamante’s Lexibonn with John Paul Guce; Emmanuel King’s Hi-Money with Pat Dilema; Ralph Javier’s Arvin Dugo with Fernando Raquel Jr. and Jeci Lapus’ Beyond Good with Jhemo Tinte.

It was Jesse Guce who guided last year’s winner, Carriedo, who eventually won the third leg of this year’s Triple Crown. Is the same good fortune in store for Barkley? b

This time, Heaven Sent, to be ridden by Rodeo Fernandez, will run with a coupled entry, Joshua’s Laughter, to be guided by John Paul Guce. Joshua’s Laughter is expected to be the early leader; but, if left unchecked, could wind up with the crown instead.

But Fernandez knows his mount by heart. After all, he had guided Heaven Sent to wins in two Triple Crown legs.

Hermie Esguerra’s Go Army with Jonathan Hernandez on the saddle will provide the challenge.

Another former Triple Crown leg winner, Shining Fame, is included in the field. The entry of Antonio Tan Jr. will be guided by Jesse Guce
