President’s Message
Hello Fellow TPA Members:
I hope everyone has had a great Summer and is enjoying the Fall
temperatures.
The Website Committee presented the Board with great
companies to re-vamp our website. The Board voted and has
selected Nancy Harrison with Everything Just So. Nancy is also
a current TPA member. Our website will be up and running with
a lot of great features for our members in the very near future.
Our Fall Seminar is November 12 and 13, 2010 at the Hilton in
Brentwood, TN. Topics include: Ethics; Labor and Employment
Law; E-Discovery; Social Networking; and Electronic Data
Discovery. Brochures & registration forms will be mailed out
October 1, 2010. The registration form is included in this
newsletter. If you have any questions, please email or call me –
[email protected] or (865)523-0404. Mark your
calendars.
For those of you interested, please do not forget to send in your
applications for the Lawassa B. Jones Memorial Scholarship and
the award for the CLA/CP exam. The deadline was October 1,
2010. Applications received by October 15th
, no later, will still be
considered. Winners will be announced at the Annual Board
meeting in November.

Looking for a Job (or Not) – It’s Time to Update Your Resume By Vicki Voisin, ACP
September is 'International Update Your Resume Month. This initiative is spearheaded by Career Directors International to promote the importance of having your resume updated at all times.
Why is this so important? You should always be prepared to submit your resume at the drop of a hat. If you're not, you'll be rushing to update and submit the resume and you may end up with a sub-par document.
Keep this quote in mind as you think about your resume: "It pays to plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark!" ~Unknown
Planning and preparation are always important. Here are additional circumstances you should consider:
Your current job responsibilities have changed, you have new training and skills, you've recently completed a degree program or obtained a certification from a professional association
You're happy with your job and have no intentions of leaving. Out of the blue a recruiter comes calling with a terrific opportunity but your resume needs to be submitted NOW. Would you be able to do that?
It's time for your annual performance review and you intend to ask for a raise. Is your resume updated to demonstrate your value to the firm?
You haven't looked at your resume in forever
Resumes don't just jump out of a hat. It takes time, effort and good organizational skills to gather information, choose format, write good content and to draft the perfect cover letter. If you don't have a powerful resume to work with in the first place, you'll be in big trouble if you need that resume by tomorrow morning.
What steps should you take to update your resume? Working from your last update, note of all of your accomplishments. Do be specific:
Did you work on a special project? Were you instrumental in initiating a new system that improves productivity? Have you surpassed goals? Have you gone above and beyond? Did you learn any new skills? Be brief while including as much detail as possible.
List all continuing education events you attended. Did you train in any new practice area? Did you obtain a certification? Did you finish your education?
Is your personal information current? Have you changed your name? Have you moved, changed your telephone number or email address? Incorrect personal information means no one will be able to find you for that important interview
Consider your format very carefully. Many standard formats found on the Internet will not work because they turn into gobbledy gook when uploaded to a future employer's electronic system. Also you need to carefully place the information regarding your skills and employment history so that there is not too much white space. It is critical that the reviewer's eye be drawn to your content, not to blank space.
The content is also critical. Resume reviewers will not take the time to read a long diatribe. Your content must be clear and concise. It must also be presented in a way that it can be easily read. If everything is lumped together in one paragraph, your resume will end up in the circular file. If at all possible, your resume should be only one page in length.
Your Challenge: Begin updating your resume today using the tips above. In the future, use your computer as your 'resume diary' where you keep careful notes of everything you do. There's no doubt that this is work, but once your update is completed and if you keep your 'resume diary' updated it will be simple to bring your resume current it on a moment's notice. Looking for written articles from paralegal/legal assistant studies students to publish in our quarterly newsletters
Basic guidelines: Article/essay can be up to 1 or 2 pages. Topic should be on a current legal issue, topic, or
subject. It can be an essay or informational piece on the chosen topic. Article can be sent by e-mail to
[email protected] with subject heading “Student article submission for
review to the Paralegal Advocate” – student will need to include full name, e-mail contact and school attending.
The student, if article is selected, can add to their resume as being selected for publication in our newsletter and
will need to submit final in Word document for publishing.
We are looking forward to seeing the wide range of subjects and information that is selected by our Tennessee
students in the paralegal/legal assistant study programs. Please share this opportunity with your students. Thank
you very much.
Congratulations to Theresa Koslovsky, CP, now Theresa Carrico, CP our Central Chapter Chair, who recently married. You will see the change to her last name throughout this issue.
Our East Tennessee Chapter
We meet on the third Thursday of each month at Dead End BBQ in Knoxville, beginning at 6:00
p.m. Continuing education credits are available at each meeting. Michelle Black is our Program
Coordinator, and doing a terrific job with the scheduling of speakers.
We now have a Face Book page "East Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Paralegal Association." This is a
great tool for informing members about upcoming meetings and events.
ETPA hosted the Spring Seminar this year. Sherri Satterfield did a fantastic job planning this Seminar and
lining up some great speakers. It was one of the best seminars we have had.
As part of our community service, our Chapter is working with the Public Defender's office in collecting
paperback books for the library which they have started at the local jails.
We are also planning our Christmas dinner for Saturday, December 11.

Our Southeast Tennessee Chapter
We are still meeting at the United Way of Greater Chattanooga every third Tuesday of each month. Our
numbers are still doing well with an average of 15-20 members attending the meetings. We have plans for this
coming Christmas in the form of projects sponsored by United Way.
We have had several and will continue to have speakers for our monthly meetings this year which qualify for
CLE credit. January’s speaker, Louise C. Mulderink, CP, presented Ethics, April was John Barber of Records
Acquisition Services, May’s speaker was a representative from Global Legal Discovery, June’s speaker was
Karen McGuffee, Esq. on free speech, July’s speaker was Kasey Frank on conflicts in the workplace, August’s
speaker was Laysha M. McCullaugh, CP on legal research, while September’s speaker was Donna Green, Esq.
regarding Social Security Benefits.
For the rest of the year, we have speakers booked on the subjects of bankruptcy, trusts and trust law, and FMLA
and state leave laws. We are looking forward to many more educational and informative speakers next year.
We have set up a Face Book page, “Southeast Chapter Tennessee Paralegal Association” on which we post
information about our meetings every month. Several members and students are, “friends” of the page.
We have had some new members join and are having students from UTC and Chattanooga State who are
attending the monthly meetings occasionally. We hope to build our membership up even further.

Our Central Tennessee Chapter
The Central Chapter’s main challenge continues to be growing its membership. However, we do have a few
loyal attendees, and I have heard from several others who plan to be at the remainder of our September and
October meetings.
During the summer, our chapter teamed up with the Nashville legal community for a “virtual” food drive for the
Second Harvest Food Bank. The Food Bank was forced to dispose of a large portion of their food stores after
the May flood, so this was a critical time for them. We were grateful for the opportunity to help.
We are planning a holiday luncheon for the month of December that I am hoping to use as a way to increase our
membership and spread the word about our chapter. I will send more information to all of you as the plans
develop. I would love it if some of the TPA members from our more mature chapters could come and share
their experiences with potential members. Hint for our readers if you are interested.

Our West Tennessee Chapter
The West TN Chapter of the Tennessee Paralegal Association continues to enjoy a good year and meet every
other month.
WTPA members once again hosted the Annual Law Day Celebration for the Madison County Bar Association
which took place on April 30th
in Jackson. We’re pleased to say we had our biggest turnout to date. Our
chapter awarded the Ernie Gray Paralegal Utilization Award this year to attorney Edward Martindale, who was
surprised and thrilled to receive the award. The Young Lawyers Division praised our efforts and expressed
their appreciation for doing a great job year after year.
Members recently assisted the TBA Young Lawyers Division in the “Wills for Heroes” program, which
provides free, basic estate planning services for law enforcement, fire department and EMS personnel. It was
started after the events of 9/11 to show appreciation to "first responders." This event was held August 7th
in
Jackson and our chapter assisted in witnessing and notarizing the documents.
Our next meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, October 12th
at the offices of Nix, Patterson & Roach, where
we’ll be discussing/preparing for the Fall Seminar, then election of new officers for the coming year.

Requesting individuals in the legal field to write an article for The Paralegal Advocate;
Proofreading submitted articles and/or final draft of The Paralegal Advocate before publication;
Marketing liaison – reach out to vendors in the legal field to see if they want to advertise in our newsletter;
Creative submissions or standing column is another consideration/opportunity;
Another project – It’s time for a new look for our newsletter. We would like your feedback on various templates
that are in the process of being generated. We need your help and input on selecting an exciting new look for The
