2018 SEMINAR SCHEDULE

Updated: 01/11/2017

UNDERSTANDING WOOD FOR THE CABINETMAKER (PAID SEMINAR) y Friday and Saturday: 9:00 am

If you have ever worked with wood, you have very likely at some point been frustrated by its variable and ever-changing behavior. Why did your beautiful table top warp so quickly? What made your locust veneer crack off beech substrate on your guitar project? How do you stop the panels on your cabinet doors from shrinking and gapping? Problems with failure can always be predicted and circumvented if you understand the structure and nature of wood. That’s where Ron comes in.

Understanding the physical structure and properties of wood (dendrology) is the most important knowledge you should have as a woodworker. If you understand how lumber is cut and what that means for your projects, how to select the best wood for your project from retail outlets, how to read defects in wood and how to understand the behavior of wood over time, your project success will be high. In this three-hour seminar, Ron explains all these things and more, and answers your questions to help you improve your woodworking skills.

This very popular seminar is derived from a 40-hour course developed in conjunction with the U.S. Forestry Service and the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse, and Ron has delivered a 6-hour video on this subject through Popular Woodworking. It provides lots of hands-on opportunities and doses of Herman wisdom and humor, and will definitely send you on your way with your brain full!

SAW SHARPENING (PAID SEMINAR) y Sunday: 9:00 am

Do you own and use a hand saw? Great! Now, how many of you have one that is sharp? Did you ever wonder why there are so many different sizes and shapes of saws and what they are used for? What is so important about point counts of saws? Is it true there is a saw designed for cutting wet or frozen wood? What the heck are rake and thrust pattern and fleam? And why is this all so important for learning how to sharpen a saw?

This is the information everyone wants to know how to properly sharpen saws so they will cut wood well! Ron delivers information on different kinds of saws and saw teeth and their proper uses and then launches right into how to make them sharp so you can get them up and running again quickly. He discusses the correct tools for different sharpening purposes and provides information on simple jigs that are actually living in your scrap pile.

Each attendee will have the opportunity for hands-on instruction in properly sharpening a saw, and will receive printed and on-line resources for successful sharpening at home.

Have you ever asked your neighbor or folks in your wood club if there was someone around who could sharpen saws? Why not BE that person?!

RON HERMANRon has done everything from pit-sawing trees to hand-building log cabins with mule teams to creating and aging historic restorations to match the existing structures, as well as building multi-million-dollar new-construction homes. He is credentialed to meet the strict standards for working on houses registered with the National Historic Trust, and has performed several period restorations.

2018 SEMINAR SCHEDULE

Updated: 01/11/2017

JOINERY FOR THE CABINETMAKER y Friday and Saturday: 1:00 pm

Showcasing quality tools from Veritas/Lee Valley, Ron will explain and demonstrate basic joints that need to be learned and practiced in order to master cabinetry. Learn specific and alternative joints for frame and drawer construction, differentiating between solid wood and plywood fastening methods. Ron will provide a visual comparison of these methods with demonstrator drawers built with each joint constructed using a different method. Learn the IDIOT principle and what it means for your solid-wood drawer construction!

KEEPING IT SHARP & SHARPENING YOUR TOOLS y Friday and Saturday: 2:30 pm; Sunday: 1:00 pm

Sharp tools are safer, faster and more effective and efficient to use. It doesn't take eight hours and sixteen stones of varying grits from different countries to effectively sharpen your tools. Learn how to sharpen like professional housewrights do--quickly, effectively and cost-efficiently--so as not to waste time on the job. Ron will teach you how to know what your tools need--cutting, sharpening and/or honing--and how to produce that keen edge that will glide through your next project. This course covers chisels, planes, knives, turning tools, bits, and other edged tools. Remember--there are only two states to any edged tool: Sharp, and Not Sharp!

IMPROVE YOUR SAWING SKILLS y Friday and Saturday: 4:00 pm

Ron is well-known in the woodworking community as a hand-saw expert, and has several top-selling videos on the topic with Popular Woodworking. In this seminar, he will help you learn how to choose the proper saw for your task at hand, make sure it is fitted properly to yourself and then how to use that saw effectively and with confidence. He will teach you tips and techniques using beautiful saws of yesteryear and modern saws from Veritas/Lee Valley. You will quickly learn how the proper saw for the job and learning to use it effectively makes a world of difference! Pairs perfectly with Ron’s paid saw-sharpening seminar!

SCARY SHARP ON A BUDGET y Friday 12:30 pm; Saturday: 11:30 am; Sunday: 10:30 am

Achieve scary sharp edges easily without spending loads of money for tons of sharpening paraphernalia. I will show you how to use sandpaper, Camellia oil and a couple of inexpensive jigs to sharpen chisels, planes and nearly anything that has a steel cutting edge. Easy, accurate and inexpensive!

CARD SCRAPER MAGIC y Friday 2:30 pm; Saturday: 1:30 pm; Sunday: 12:00 pm

It's amazing how quickly and efficiently a simple steel card scraper can clean up and refine a wooden surface. Sandpaper becomes a seldom used item in your shop once scrapers are mastered. But there's the rub, how the heck do you get a sharp, long-lasting burr on a card scraper, and how do you use it to get those beautiful, super-fine shavings? It’s really much easier than you think and I'm going to show you how to quickly and easily put a fine, sharp burr on yours. I’ll also show you how easy it is to restore that wonderful burr when it stops being quite so wonderful. The whole process is so easy that it's darned near magic. We're also going to take a look at the Stanley 80 and 82 scrapers; you need these in your surfacing arsenal.

FAST FABULOUS FINISH FOR FINE FURNITURE y Friday 4:30 pm; Saturday: 3:30 pm; Sunday: 1:30 pm

Want a finish that’s durable, beautiful, easy to repair or refresh, and that can be applied by hand start to finish in 15 minutes? Sound like magic? Actually it’s dead easy and I’ll show you how to create a finish that’s dazzling. We’ll also take a look at color-infused varnish for a wipe-on finish that can color and cover in one process. Finishing can be a real chore with a huge fear-of-failure factor. This seminar will erase the fear.

ROLAND JOHNSONTo me one the real joys of woodworking is that hand tools and power tools can so effectively complement each other. There are days when my shop is a raucous cacophony of whirling cutters and singing blades and other days where hours of tranquilly reflective work create the Zen of Woodworking atmosphere that we often romanticize as the only way, and I enjoy every day.

S@KJHMF SNNKR , KHUD 'O@HC RDLHM@Q( y Saturday 9 00am - 110:30 am

Rollie will be discussing the joys and pitfalls of buying vintage woodworking equipment.

Covered in the seminar:-Why buy? -Finding what you’re looking for-What to know and how to avoid the pitfalls-The Inspection Kit-Realities of buying and the joys of restoring

Rollie has been messing about with mechanical stuff since he was a kid and can guide you through the daunting challenge of rescuing just the right machine for your shop!

CHAINSAW TUNEUP (SELECT CITIES, New Jersey) y Friday, Saturday & Sunday 1:00 pm

Chainsaw maintenance is 90% of chainsaw use. This 45-min workshop will save you time and money in repairs. No special tools required. Learn how to make your chainsaw work for you! This talk walks you through the maintenance and use of one of the most useful tools: the chainsaw. As a lumberjack in Idaho in the late sixties, Pat learned how to completely disassemble, clean and reassemble a chainsaw at dusk in order to be most productive during the daylight hours. He has felled trees large and small, limbed them forty feet in the air and rebuilt hundreds of saws. Whether you have a chainsaw that you use once a year to clean up your yard or are thinking of buying your own woodlot to maintain, this workshop will save you hours and hundreds of dollars in repair-shop and small-engine fees.

Pat will provide a chainsaw to disassemble, clean and reassemble walking you through all of the pieces that may need to be repaired, replaced or just cleaned as well as the best ways in which to clean them. From adjusting the engine speed, sharpening the chain to what type of fuel ratio to mix; he will cover it all.

HOW TO CUT A DOVETAIL TENON WITH HAND TOOLS (SELECT CITIES, New Jersey)

y Friday 3:00 pm, Saturday 10:30 am, Sunday 10:30 amThe dovetail is an excellent joint for small and large framing alike. We particularly like using it for floor joists in timber frames as it is not a very demanding joint that is easy to produce and looks beautiful. It is simply a tenon that fits into an oversized joint and tightened with a wedge. In this presentation we will detail the steps in laying out and cutting the tenon with all hand tools including the measuring, scoring and cutting. We will show some of our favorite tools to make the process go smoothly.
