Season of Change

We are very appreciative to be begin-ning a new school year at SJCC! We

have many exciting reasons to love our job! First, we hope you enjoy reading through the new format of the Voice. We worked very hard with Amy Ronski, Liz Pietrykowski, Sarah Pietrykowski, and El-len Leite all summer to make your alumni experience a great one. The technical sup-port from Deb Streacker and Tim Burns has been invaluable. Secondly, we have started a PTA in order to strengthen the SJCC re-lationship between parents, students, and faculty members. We are thrilled to be creating new events which are family friendly through-out our community. There is also a new addition to our building. The St. Casimir’s Endowment Board has funded the renova-tion of our 2nd fl oor Men’s bathroom in order to make it handicap accessible. At this point, we still need to renovate the 2nd fl oor women’s bathroom. We are extreme-ly proud of our volunteers for working to complete this project. We hope you enjoy this issue of the Voice. Please remember to support our Annual Fund. It is more important than ever due to the State reducing benefi ts to our Catholic Schools. We hope to see you at Homecoming. Stop by the cafeteria after the game for a great time (food and bever-ages provided courtesy of the SJCC Alumni and Friends Association).

Greetings,

The 2009-2010 school year is off and run-

ning. It is great to see our students in the hallways,

they are the life of our school.

As you look through this issue of The

Voice, you will see a change in the format. I would

like to thank our sponsor, Diversifi ed Insurance for

making this possible. I also want to thank the team

pictured below for all of their time and effort.

We are kicking off our 16th Annual

Fund. I would like to thank Tom Dudley and

Sarah Pietrykowski for chairing this year’s

fund drive and all the dedicated volunteers that

make this such a success. Last year over 800 alumni and

friends donated over $126,000. I truly appreciate your generosity and I

hope this year’s will be an even greater success.

Currently the Catholic schools in Fremont are working on a plan to

make our schools stronger. Many individuals have put in hours of time on

a plan to make this work. The name of the team is Holy Family Formation

Team (HFFT for short). We are hoping that there will be a new and improved

school system in place by the beginning of the 2010 school year. More infor-

mation will be coming in future editions of The Voice.

Our soccer team now has its own fi eld. They are playing at the

Naderer Sports Complex. I want to especially thank Craig & Cheryl Wendt,

Knobby Reiter, Pete Naderer, Ray Miller, and all those who helped in any

way to make this happen.

In closing, I once again want to let you know how lucky SJCC is to

have such great support. Your prayers, fi nancial gifts, and volunteer hours al-

low us to continue to provide a well-rounded Catholic education for our young

people. Thank you so very much and you continue to be in our prayers.

GO STREAKS!

As the new 2009/2010 school year be-gins, many positive changes occur also. The cover pictures exemplify the values of the mission statement. Joe Steinle is one example of the numerous athletic activities this school offers. Paul Wendt demonstrates how the mind is educated to the fullest. Taylor Darr expresses school spirit and the musical aspect SJCC is proud to have. The group of students saying a prayer during the advent season is one of the many ways students develop a stronger faith during their years at SJCC. As time continues to move on and the years continue to pass by, the mission statement here at SJCC will al-ways remain as a constant reminder of the great values SJCC possesses.

Reachout is SJCC’s school wide service project. Itkicks off with a Mass November 25 and goes through December 18. Each student is asked to bring in non-perishable items and cash donations are collected to purchase the perishable items. Meanwhile, Fr. Ron Brickner and his team will be receiving names of 100 families in Fremont that are requesting one of the food bas-kets. On December 18 Mass is celebrated in the gym where stu-dents and faculty are gathered around the fruits of their month long labor. The baskets are de-livered by the senior class. To make a donation to this cause drop off or send a check to SJCC 702 Croghan St. Fremont, OH 43420 ATTN: Reachout.

The Annual Fund Committee and SJCC are excited to be kicking off our 16th Annual Fund. A new school year brings new leadership to the Annual Fund Committee. This year’s campaign welcomes back Tom Dudley (previously co-chaired the 6th and 7th Annual Fund) and welcomes co-chair Sarah Pietrykowski (‘02) who is serving her 2nd year on the committee. According to Dudley, “This fund is an integral part of the school budget especially now with the State wide elimination of funding to the Catholic Schools. SJCC is important to the future of Fremont as it provides educational options for all our citizens.” Furthermore,

Mike Jay (‘78), Economic Development Director of Fremont states, “Many times key executives looking to locate their businesses in Fremont consider the educational system of that city. Parochial options are an important factor in their decision making process.” Last year’s campaign raised over $126,000. The report on Annual Fund 15 follows as well the list of nearly 800 donors who made this drive a suc-cess. These funds support SJCC’s student religious retreats, technology, sci-ence department, faculty/staff salaries, and development. Pietrykowski believes strongly in Catholic Education. “As a local businesswoman and a graduate of SJCC, I recognize the importance of the investment in an SJCC education. Tom and I look forward to continuing the momentum of previous Annual Funds.” We value our alumni and friends and their dedication to SJCC. Recent state budget cuts affecting Catholic education make this year’s campaign and the support of SJCC more important than ever. It currently costs $6,257 to edu-cate each student, after tuition and parish subsidy, a gap of $1,257 remains. Our goal is to ease the fi nancial burden for those who make great sacrifi ces to keep Catholic Education alive in Fremont. Please watch your mail for our donation appeal and we hope we can count on your support.

Page 12: 2009 Voice Fall

Fall 2009 12 Fall 2009

Streak of Genius Streak of GeniusAs we kick off an improved version of “The Voice” I think it is the perfect time to comment on how to be a good in-vestor. Most investors could dramatically improve their returns by following fi ve rules.

DIVERSIFY

The most dangerous mistake you can make is betting every-thing on one investment. This is akin to putting all of your chips on one number at roulette. You might win big but the odds are much greater that you will lose everything.A look at market history should convince an investor that no security is immune. Total loss is not limited to small stocks. Blue chips that appear invulnerable one day can disappear the next. Remember what happened in recent years to Enron, World-Com, and Countrywide Financial. Investors were nearly wiped out by Bear Stearns. A thousand bucks invested in Citibank a year ago was recently worth only $409. By di-versifying as widely as possible you can reduce the risk of loss due to a decline in one security or one market sector.

BUY LOW

If your grocer put your favorite cereal on a two-for-one sale, you’d stock up, right? Conversely, you would buy only a box at a time if the price was at a premium level. It

By: Bryan F. Ohm ‘74President of MPM Wealth Advisors Holland, OH

stands to reason that any investor would jump at the chance to pump money into the stock market when it is down. The more it is down from recent highs, the more eager they should be to buy. Yet the average investor often holds back when the market is falling, afraid to commit more money just to see prices fall further. The problem with that strat-egy is no one can accurately predict the market’s bottom: it often turns up at a point when the news is blackest and in-vestors aren’t convinced that a turnaround has begun. They will continue to hold money back and then miss out on the best part of the recovery.

DO NOT BUY HIGH

Conversely, wouldn’t it be better to hold back a little on investing when stocks are expensive?Yet this is not what many investors do: they get swept up in a mania to make money in the stock market well after it has soared. The famous cover of Money magazine in the late 1990s that said “Everyone is getting rich but me!” exem-plifi es the mindset that sends investors chasing returns that are no longer available.

SELL LOSERS

This applies to an individual stock or other security that has fallen sharply from its high. Many investors hang on, reasoning that they “want to see it come back” before sell-ing it. Unfortunately, a past price is not a good predictor of a future price: just because a stock hit $60 a share last year and has fallen since does not mean it ever has to hit $60 again. Again, consider Countrywide or Bear Stearns. Neither recovered to their former highs. They kept falling until the companies were merged into other companies at extremely low prices.

INVEST FOR THE LONG TERM

Investors should set a portfolio mix appropriate to their needs and risk propensities and stick with it. When the mar-kets push it out of whack, they should rebalance by selling investments that have gone up and buying those that have dropped, an exercise that forces them to buy low and sell high.

Alumni & Friends/CEDF Annual Golf Outing Wrap-UpDespite the rain, this year’s outing was the most successful ever with a profi t of over $6,000! It will be split between The Alumni & Friends Association and CEDF. The golf outing committee of John Lauer, Al O’Neal, Al Schabel, Rick Frank and Jerry Freeh did a great job organizing the event. A special thanks to Sycamore Hills and the Michaels’ family for hosting this year’s outing and donating over $600. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 7, for next year’s outing at Green Hills in Clyde.

Countless volunteers and great organization contributed to the success of the annual St. Casimir’s Golabki Dinner. Keep-ing a long parish tradition alive, Mary Pfefferle and Barb Ronski lent their culinary expertise to the SJCC Booster Club, who spon-sored the event. Chairmen John Lauer and Jim Ronski coordinated a team of over 200 volunteers that managed to prepare, roll, and serve over three thousand cabbage rolls! The dinner was held in the SJCC cafeteria and an effi cient drive-thru system in the park-ing lot allowed the crew to serve over one thousand meals!

Thank you for all of your support!

This school year sees the start of an SJCC PTA (Par-ent Teacher Association). A group of interested par-ents and teachers began meeting this summer to fi nd a way to keep parents involved. The grade schools have many things to keep parents involved with their school. There was not as much for high school parents to do. The PTA group is not about fundraisers but about building relationships between students, par-ents, and teachers. The fi rst event was hosting lunch for freshman parents after orientation. Meetings will be the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in the development offi ce. All parents are welcome to at-tend.
