    Project Background

Process control systems are automatic platforms used in a wide variety of

industries to operate a plant more cost-effectively and efficiently. Traditionally, automobile manufacturers had to use a different computer to connect each

automation device in the production process including pressing machines,

robots, and testing machines. A leading European automobile manufacturer

wanted to use just one computer to connect all o f these machine automation

devices and decided to use Moxas CB-114 embedded serial board for their

    process control system.

Moxas CB-114 embedded serial communication board can accommodate

multiple high performance peripherals for field devices that use RS-232/422/285

serial communication protocols. In fact, one computer can accommodate

up to four CB-114 boards to provide 16 additional COM ports. As a result, the

manufacturer can easily monitor and control the entire machine automation

process with a single computer. Thanks to the CB-114, the manufacturer no

longer needs to worry about purchasing and maintaining a separate computerfor each automation device in the production process.

    Moxas Solution

The CB-114 is a PC/104-Plus module that can be stacked inside an embedded

computer to save space. Due to space limitations, the manufacturer decided to

use Moxas CB-114 in an embedded system for its machine automation process.

The CB-114 features four RS-232/422/485 serial ports for COM port expansion

to integrate data transmission for peripheral devices. Furthermore, the CB-114

provides drivers for Windows CE 5.0 and Windows XP Embedded, which are

    popular in embedded systems.

    Project Background

Manufacturing TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) panels is a

complicated and highly technical process. The three major stages in

TFT-LCD panel production are the array, LC cell, and module assembly

processes. In addition, each finished panel must also pass a series of quality

inspection tests such as defect inspection and lighting tests. The most

challenging part of the TFT-LCD manufacturing process is achieving zero fault

tolerance for high quality and productivity. One of our customers needed a

USB-to-serial solution to transmit data between a host and quality inspection

equipment in the TFT-LCD manufacturing process. In such a demanding

manufacturing environment, adopting multiple ports and a ruggedly designed

USB-to-serial product proved to be the best o ption.

    Moxas Solution

    The UPort 1650-16 is a 16-port USB-to-RS-232/422/485 serial converter

with plug-and-play USB capabilities to simplify serial port expansions. Unlike

multiport serial boards, the UPort 1650-16 does not require users to open the

chassis of the PC or even turn off the system when connecting additional COM

ports, saving time, effort, and money. The standard 19-inch rack-mountable

form factor of the UPort 1650-16 is perfectly suited for TFT-LCD manufacturing

    laboratories.

In this application, Moxas UPort 1650-16 USB-to-serial converter is used to

connect the host to test equipment for data transmission in the TFT-LCD quality

inspection process. The UPort 1650-16 provides true USB 2.0 transmission

to improve productivity, and also provides LED indicators to simplify

    troubleshooting.

    Project Background

The initial solution was for the engineers to use CNC (Computer Numerical

Control) to run a new manufacturing program. This solution requires off-linedevelopment in the design room, and then manual transfer of the program to

the factory floor PC using a f loppy disk or USB Storage. The factory floor PC

will implement the program by sending instructions to v arious manufacturing

machines over an RS-232 interface connection. However, the environment of

the factory floor is not suitable for PCs (due to high humidity, oily and dusty

surroundings, and extreme temperatures); it is highly probably that PCs in such

    environments will crash frequently.

    Moxas Solution

Moxas NPort 5110 and NPor tW2150 Plus device servers were chosen since

they meet all of the requirements. The NPort is perfectly suited for rugged

environments and is much smaller than a PC.

The control center sends instructions to the CNC in TCP/IP packet format through

an Ethernet/Wireless connection to the NPort. It is no longer necessary for

personnel to physically transport the program to the site, and multiple CNC

machines can receive the data simultaneously.

    Advantages of implementing this solution:

uSystem costs are reduced by lower equipment expenses (the cost of NPort is

much lower than a PC) and by the time and human resources saved.

uChanging the CNC layout when expanding is quick and easy.

uMoxas driver technology reroutes COM data through the computers Ethernet

card; users do not need to spend time to make changes to their existing

    manufacturing programs.

uCentralized feedback of the CNCs status ensures organized and simplified

    maintenance.

uWireless NPort save on cabling costs and time.

Factory automation applications must be equipped to handle and monitor

the myriads of information from at tached devices. For plastic manufacturing

applications, the boiler control system plays a critical role by gathering and

regulating information to ensure production is accurate and smooth. In this

particular case, the customer combines eight subsystems that include power

meters, water meters, alarm output, displays, and I/O s tatus to be controlled

by several intelligent controllers with Modbus RTU interface. The Modbus TCP

protocol is used for this application due to the distance.

Our client requested the following specifications for their system:

u Modbus serial to Modbus TCP translation

    u Multiple slaves/masters support

u Automatic Modbus TCP response time detection

    Moxas Solution

Moxas MGate MB3000 series, a serial to Ethernet Modbus gateway, was selected

    for their system.

For this application, PLCs control the boiler system and intelligent controllers

are responsible for retrieving information from the boiler and subsystems. When

the control server (IPC) needs to acquire data from the boiler, the intelligent

controllers with Modbus RTU interface will retrieve data from the boiler.

The command is sent in Modbus TCP packet format through the Local Area

Network (LAN) and received by the MB3270. The MB3270 would then convert

the packet into Modbus RTU messages for the intelligent controller to send

to the remote control server via Modbus TCP. Finally, the intelligent controller

receives the command from the IPC and relays the data by using Modbus TCP

communication. Normally, PLCs and intelligent controllers control and monitor

information separately. This unique architecture will ensure fast retrieval of real

time data and allows for immediate alert if the primary communication (PLC) is

    down.

Moxas MGate MB3270 offers high flexibility. Features that benefit boiler control

    systems are:

uCascading Ethernet ports for easy wiring

uResponse timeout auto detection to define the suitable timeout value

uRedundant power inputs minimize the risk of data loss in the event of power

    ailures.

Today, more and more boiler control systems are being equipped with Moxas

    MGate MB3000 series Modbus gateways.

    11

    Project Background

The fabrication of semiconductor wafers is a high precision process that

requires over 300 individual steps categorized into various major process

groups such as photo-resist, thinfilm, etch, and CMP. Within a t ypical thinfilm or

etch device, there are many built-in serial devices such as vacuum turbo pumps,

RF generators, and RF matches, all controlled by an internal PC.

A Japanese company that produces thinfilm and etch process equipment was

looking to develop a new-generation device communication solution. This

solution will enable the serial devices to be controlled by a remote PC located in

the control island of the semiconductor factory and will result in better control

of the serial devices for finer precision. With this new solution, semiconductor

makers can easily retrieve the running parameters of the devices and remotely

place process recipes to the process equipment. Currently, a majority of

semiconductor fabrication factories use Ethernet communication as one part of

their backbone network, and for this reason the company opted for a

    serial-to-Ethernet solution with:

    u

WinCE driver for managing devices on a WinCE platformuUltra low latency for retrieving running parameters and placing process

recipes, which are extremely time critical (the time is calculated in

    milliseconds).

uHigh MTBF since even a small pause in device connections can cause huge

    losses.

    Moxas Solution

Moxas NPort 6650-8 terminal servers were chosen since they meet all of the

companys requirements. Each piece of thinfilm and etch process equipment is

equipped with two chambers that run the process individually. Each chamber is

equipped with a vacuum turbo pump, RF generator, and RF match, all of which

use RS-232 communication. Inside the process equipment you will find a pair

of NPort 6650-8 device servers that connect the serial devices to Ethernet,

allowing the devices to be controlled and monitored by the remote PC. The

company uses Moxas WinCE Real COM driver on the NPort 6650-8 to connect

the devices to the remote PC.

In the past, warehouses needed to hire many workers to organize the

thousands of goods in stock. As a leading business in warehouse automation, our client used high tech rail guided vehicles (RGV) to categorize each product.

Each product has an RFID tag attached to it that contains specific data used for

categorization. The use of RGVs and RFID tags allow our client to save valuable

    time and resources.

The best communication network for RGVs is wireless, which allows the

warehouse to bypass wiring and space constraints. Since wireless systems are

also relatively easy to install and maintain, the client already had an 802.11a/b/g

wireless environment installed. To ensure proper operation of the RGVs, the

client required stable and reliable communication between access points and

RGV controls, as well as seamless wireless communication with 802.11a/b/g and

    roaming capability.

    Project Background

All solar power stations include three major devices-a power inverter, a PLC,

and meters. The power inverter converts the energy generated by the plant

to power for end-users, and the PLC controls the bases sun tracking system.

Although some inverters and meters are serial devices, these days PLCs are

often Ethernet devices, and consequently the station needs to connect both

serial and Ethernet devices to the Ethernet backbone network or the control

    center.

Power generation systems must be stable and reliable, which is why Ethernet

redundancy in the Ethernet backbone is essential. In addition, solar farms are

normally located in wide open locations such as deserts, which means that the

devices should be able to endure wide variations in temperature.

    Project Background

There are 3 main segments in power automation: generation, transmission, and

distribution. In most power distribution systems, control centers acquire data rom the

remote RTU via networks. Each network includes dial-up links rom serial modems with

the PSTN. Serial-to-Ethernet solutions are required in the p ower distribution systems o

these applications to manage the numerous serial RTUs in the control centers.

To enhance system reliability, our client requested the ollowing speciications or their

    power distribution system.

uRedundant control servers: most power distribution systems are built with two or

    more control servers.

uRedundant communication networks: two redundant networks are built to back each

    other up.

uRedundant power: mission-critical devices in the system must have built-in dual

    power inputs.

    Automatic Meter Reading

    China/Asia

Moxas SolutionMoxas CN2600 series terminal server was chosen to meet the above requirements or

    our clients power distribution system.

When the control server needs to acquire data rom the remote RTU, the command is

sent in TCP/IP packet ormat through the Local Area Network (LAN) and received by

the CN2600. The CN2600 would then convert the packet into serial messages or the

modem to send to the remote modem via PSTN. Finally, the RTU receives the command

rom the modem and responds to the control server with the data by using the same

communication route. Whenever the control server is down, another server is activated

to back up the primary server. The LAN and power supply are also backed up in the

    same way.

Moxas CN2600 oers high redundancy and the ollowing eatures or the power

    distribution system.

uDRDAS: whenever the control server switch mechanism is activated, the CN2600 can

automatically identiy and cooperate with the backup server.

uDual-LAN cards with two independent MAC and IP addresses allow the CN2600 to be

connected to separate LAN networks. To use this eature, the PC host must also be

installed with two LAN cards. I one o the networks ails, the PC host will still be able

to communicate with your serial devices over the redundant LAN.

uDual-power input minimizes the risk o data loss in the event o a power ailure.

Today, thousands o Moxas CN2600 series terminal servers have been installed in

power distribution systems all over China.

Automated meter reading (AMR) technology automatically collects data from

devices such as electricity, water, and gas meters, and transfers that data to a

central database for billing or analysis.

A particular tower in the Middle East has a high density of devices and

communication mediums on each flo or. In addition, the control room needs to

gather and monitor a great deal of information including security alarm signals,

air conditioner controls, signal controls, power meters, etc. However, there was

insufficient space to install serial communication wiring to connect the power

meters to the control room. Since an Ethernet network was already installed,

    Project Background

As concerns over global warming continue to grow, green technologies are

becoming increasingly popular. Wind turbine companies provide an excellent

alternative to burning fossil fuels by harnessing kinetic energy from the wind

and converting it into electricity. A typical wind farm may include over 80 wind

turbines, making it imperative that the networks for managing and controlling

    these installations are reliable.

Each wind turbine includes a generator and a variety of serial components such

as a water cooler, high voltage transformer, ultrasonic wind sensors, yaw gear,

blade bearing, pitch cylinder, and hub controller. All of these components are

controlled by a PLC and communicate with the ground host. Due to the total

integration of these devices into an Ethernet network, one of our customers in

the wind turbine industry needed a serial-to-Ethernet solution that can operate

With only two major highways running down the west side of Taiwan,

congestion and long traffic jams during holidays and long weekends is acertainty. The Taiwan National Highway Bureau (TNH) has set up several traf fic

monitors and control centers to monitor traffic and to provide drivers with road

conditions and alternative routes for bypassing congested sections. To obtain

real-time highway road conditions, the control centers rely on a large number

of cameras installed along the highway. Most cameras support zoom-in/zoom-

out and left/right panning operations powered by a motor that is controlled

remotely over an RS-485 connection. By taking advantage of existing fiber

cables that run the length of the highway, system engineers used serial-to-fiber

converters to control camera motors from the control center.

    Moxas Solution

Serial-to-fiber converters are generally used in pairs, and Moxa provides both

standalone products and chassis solutions for high density media systems.

Available products include the ICF-1150 series, which is an industrial

serial-to-fiber converter with a wide operating temperature of -40 to 85C. In

addition, the NRack System chassis solution is used in the TNHs control center.

The advantage of the NRack System is that slide-in modules can be plugged into

the chassis to save valuable cabinet space and mounting effort.

    Project Background

In recent years, Ethernet has become increasingly popular in the automation

industry, especially in power automation systems. Many PLCs or RTUs now

support Ethernet as the primary communication interface. In order to minimize

noise interference in its communication system, a Taiwanese transportation

company wanted to connect all its train stations using fiber optic cables. The

power monitoring system in each station would also be connected in this way.

Keeping the Cat 5 cables as short as possible is imperative to building an

automation system and media converters offer the most convenient solution

without changing the entire hardware structure.

Transportation applications also require industrial-grade solutions due to their

environmental conditions. Therefore, our client requested industrial DIN-rail

mounted media converters to connect RTUs and PLCs to the Ethernet switches.

In an air quality management system or power system. Some of the stations

equipment have Ethernet support but are legacy devices. As a result, the media

converter also needed to recognize standards such as Half Duplex or 10BaseT.

the performance and form-factor are just what our customer needed. The

operating temperature range is -10 to 60C, which is wider than commercial-

grade products. The IMC-21-S-SC also supports DIN-rail mounting, which saves

An airport terminal must be equipped to handle many tasks, including

passenger traffic, ticket purchases and check-in, luggage transfers, security

checkpoints, and more. In addition, terminals also need to manage basic

utilities, runway signals, and power dispatch systems. All of these tasks require

coordinating a great deal of information and equipment over a communication

network. A central control room typically handles all the control signals for

    multiple operations within an airport.

The control room of the new international terminal of a major Chinese city

needed to connect various devices via different media interfaces including

Ethernet, RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, depending on the application and

distance from the control room. In addition, the Chinese airport needed a total

communication solution that would incorporate runway signal controls and

power source monitoring. High standards for security and architectural stability

were also required for the airports applications.

    Transportation

    China/Asia

    Moxas Solution

The Chinese airport decided to use Moxas NPort 5232I for the network

infrastructure and the CP-138U-I to transmit serial communication signals locally.

This allowed the control center to gather power control signals via multiport

serial boards (CP-138U-I) and remotely monitor power meter data by using an

Ethernet-to-serial device (NPort 5232I). Moreover, both the CP-138U-I and

NPort 5232I provide reliable optical isolation protection. Moxas Ethernet

solutions were selected because the client wanted a network that satisfied the

    following requirements:

    Project Background

An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a computerized telecommunications

device that provides customers with access to financial transactions in a public

space without the need for a human clerk or bank teller. Most modern ATMsidentify customers when they insert a card that contains a unique card number

and additional security information. Using an ATM, customers can access their

bank accounts in order to make cash withdrawals and check their account

    balances.

ATMs have an embedded PC in the center of the machine that connects to

multiple serial peripherals such as card readers, keypads, touch screens, receipt

printers, and cash dispensers. The PC connects to these serial devices via a

multiport serial board. Some embedded PCs require Low Profile boards due to

the limited space available inside a typical ATM.

In China, more and more banks are setting up ATMs to service growing numbers

of customers. A local Chinese ATM vendor has even entered the international

playing field by winning a large foreign market share and wide customer

recognition. To maintain its competitive edge domestically and abroad, the

vendor wanted a multiport serial board provider with high product quality,on-time shipment, and high product reliability.

    Moxas Solution

Moxa offers a v ariety of multiport serial bo ards for the ATM industry. The

CP-104UL is a 4-po rt RS-232 Universal PCI board that adheres to Low Profile

specifications, which means it can fit into any type of PC. Besides dispensing

cash, some ATMs offer other services, such as cash deposits and bill payments

that require additional peripheral devices. For these ATMs, Moxa of fers

multiport serial boards that are capable of connecting more than 4 serial

devices. ATMs also use a wide range of connection interfaces such as ISA and

PCI Express. To meet the needs of such a diverse clientele, Moxa offers the

C104H (ISA) and CP-104EL (PCI Express) multiport serial boards. Some PCs that

come with embedded modules will also use Moxas PC/104 module (CA-104) or

PC/104-Plus module (CB-114) to increase the number of COM ports. Some ATMsneed smaller PCs because most of their internal space is occupied by currency

boxes. These mini PCs or shoebox PCs need Low Profile boards such as the

CP-104UL. With Moxas solutions, they can customize ATM functions to fulfill

    their customers demands.

receipt printers, and cash registers, are each connected to a separate serial

port. POS terminals often integrate a PC with multiport serial boards to control

    multiple peripheral devices.

A gas pump manufacturer in Europe was looking for a reliable and easy to

install solution since peripheral devices can be difficult to maintain and costly

to service. Since they used a shoebox PC, there was a space limitation to take

into consideration for this gas station POS application.

The Moxa UPort 1650-8 is a USB-to-serial converter. Its USB plug-and-play

capability makes serial port expansion easy. Unlike multiport serial boards, the

UPort 1650-8 does not require users to open the chassis or turn off the system

in order to add COM ports or maintain the device, saving time, money and

effort. The UPort 1650-8 also allows users to connect all the peripheral devices

in the POS terminal and overcomes the space and PCI slot limitations, providing

greater scalability, significant cost savings, and more effective customer service.

    Project Background

The mass transit agency of a Spanish city was developing a public

transportation network that included both above and below ground trains

for the entire metropolitan area. They planned to install ticketing vending

machines (TVM) in the stations to make it easier for passengers to purchase

tickets, thereby improving customer service. These TVMs resemble ATMs, but

also use an embedded PC. While they do not perform bank transactions, TVMs

allow passengers to purchase tickets by cash, credit/bank cards, coin, or even

Smart Cards. TVMs generally use more peripherals than a typical ATM, requiring

around 8 ports to connect all the serial devices that comprise the machine.

    Moxas Solution

To address the above mentioned concerns, Moxa provided the mass transit

agency with CP-168U multiport serial boards as a cost-effective and

space-saving solution. The CP-168U is an 8-por t RS-232 Universal PCI board. In

order to accommodate all the peripheral devices in a single machine, TVMs are

beginning to use smaller PCs that come with fewer PCI expansion slots. The

CP-168Us design allows our client to connect up to 8 peripheral devices via a

single PCI slot. As a result, our client is able to provide more services and greater

convenience to passengers by integrating all of these components into one

    machine.

    Project Background

Most RFID reader manufacturers are familiar and comfortable with serial

communications such as RS-232 and RS-485 because they have been using

this form of technology to produce serial RFID readers and barcodes for solong. However, given the distance limitations of serial communications and

wider adoption of RFID technologies, demands for more complex and flexible

infrastructures are ever increasing. To satisfy their field needs, RFID solution

providers turned to Ethernet for help. However, RFID solution providers, who

are experts in serial communications, are not familiar with Ethernet technology.

A company from Shanghai, China, manufactures RFID readers and provides RFID

solutions to various market segments, such as factories, logistics businesses,

schools, and hospitals. In this success story the company wanted to implement

an RFID solution to monitor the activities of retirement home residents. The

plan was to deploy a serial RFID reader every five square meters and to connect

and manage the readers through an Ethernet backbone.

To realize an Ethernet-based network with the existing serial RFID readers

    requires:

uEmbedded serial-to-Ethernet modules to upgrade their RFID readers

    u

An easy to implement solution that requires minimal technical effortuExtremely small module to fit inside the tiny RFID readers

    uCost-effective solution.

    Moxas Solution

Moxas MiiNePort E1 fits the companys requirements perfectly. The MiiNePort E1

is the worlds tiniest and most innovative embedded serial-to-Ethernet device

server. The MiiNePort is no bigger than an RJ45 connector and fits perfectly

into the companys tiny RFID readers, and since it supports Moxas proprietary

Real COM mode, the company can continue using their original serial RFID

utilities, and do not need to waste time and money developing new utilities.

The company was also able to benefit from using Moxas proprietary NetEZ

technology, which provided them with additional support:

uAutoCFG (Auto Configuration): The company adopted Moxas AutoCFG

technology and eliminated the time consuming task of manually configuring

the RFID readers one by one.

uMCSC (Multi-channel Serial Communication): With the help of Moxas patent

pending MCSC, which allows the RFID reader to simultaneously play the role

of a TCP Client as well as TCP Server, the company was able to implement

    complex applications.

uEXTrigger (External Trigger): With such a large quantity of readers being

deployed, occasional network troubleshooting is expected. With Moxas

EXTrigger, resetting and restarting the device can be done in an instant by

simply pressing the EXTrigger button. There is no need to open the devices

    casing or interrupt operations.

    Project Background

The most basic video surveillance setup is a single camera connected directly

to a monitor and recording device. However, many businesses require video

surveillance on a larger scale, which often requires a dedicated management

system. These management systems are unable to include every possible

type of device port, and for this reason, converters are often necessary when

    attaching different devices.

A client that designs video surveillance systems needed USB-to-serial converters

to connect devices to the management system. Their system needed to be able

to connect to serial devices such as card readers, modems, video cameras, and

sensors. The client required a converter with the following characteristics:
