THE VILLAGE OF MAMAKA THANKS YOU SLVP BOARD MEMBERS VISIT SIERRA LEONE Since beginning our work in Sierra Leone, we've sent several members over to check on our project progress and evaluate new projects. As it is a policy of SLVP to keep administrative costs to a minimum, we fund these trips personally. Our Presi- dent, Albert Kamara, has been able to visit twice, once in Febru- ary 2007 to lay the foundation of the Mamaka school and again in May 2008 to deliver the funds for the addition of the roof before the rainy season. Board Member Jim O'Donnell was awarded a Ful- bright scholarship and has been in Freetown since August work- ing with educators at the Univer- sity. During his weekends and free time, he is able to perform site visits to Mamaka and other future projects for SLVP. Mau- reen McNamara will be making her first visit to Sierra Leone in January and Albert will be mak- ing another visit to finish the Mamaka school as soon as we've raised the dollars necessary to complete the project. A school project in Fintonia, and 3. A water system project in the village of Mabenba. The Mamaka school project is almost complete. Through hard work and perseverance the people of Mamaka and neighboring villages have pitched in to help make their new school a reality. From a makeshift collection of grass thatched huts to a 9 room school with library and town hall meeting center the school is 90% complete and already being used by the students and teachers. It all started when Albert felt the need to rebuild this school which was a big part of his youth and as originally built by his father. When he saw that this school was destroyed by the civil war he knew what he needed to do. From this intention was the birth of SLVP where help will be extended to many more villages in war torn Sierra Leone. We want to thank our generous donors for helping to make this dream a reality.
