Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 26 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 30 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including seven NEC tournament titles in volleyball, six NEC Tournament championships in softball, five regular-season titles in football and three NEC Tournament championships each in men’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball. The 2008-09 athletic season saw the Colonial athletic programs continue to rank near the top of their respective conferences, as the men’s basketball team claimed its second straight Northeast Conference regular-season championship and sixth overall. The Colonials went on to win their league-record sixth NEC Tournament championship and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the title game at the Charles L. Sewall Center in front 3,227 fans, the first sellout in school history. Also during the 2008-09 season the Robert Morris volleyball team earned its fifth outright NEC regular-season championship and sixth overall in 2008, posting a perfect 8-0 record in league play. The exploits of the RMU athletic program in 2008-09 followed a 2007-08 athletic season that saw the men’s basketball team claim its first Northeast Conference regular-season title since 1992, while the women’s basketball program claimed its second straight NEC Tournament championship and subsequent appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006-07, Robert Morris had one of its best seasons in Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlighted the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament Championship and its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, while the Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history in January of 2007 by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. Individually in 2006-07, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’s outdoor track and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Off the field, a total of six student-athletes were named to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Teams in 2006-07, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic All-American for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-America honors twice. The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history.

The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s rowing team claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 17 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball has made an NEC record six appearances, while volleyball owns an NEC record five appearances. RMU’s men’s basketball program has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while volleyball made five straight appearances from 1999 to 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL alum in John Banaszak, who was promoted to assistant head coach in the spring of 2008. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

When John Kowalski was inducted into the

Western Chapter of The Pennsylvania Sports

Hall of Fame in the spring of 2009, it marked

the fourth time in his storied career that he

gained admittance into a Hall of Fame. Now

in his eighth season as the head coach of

the Robert Morris University women’s soccer

team, Kowalski is applying the same expertise

to women’s college soccer that he has used on

the professional and world stage.

On September 28, 2004, Kowalski was

inducted into the New England Soccer Hall

of Fame. In January of 2002, Kowalski was

inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame and

in October 2002 he was inducted into the RMU

Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments

as head coach of the Colonial men’s soccer

team.

Within the local, national and international

soccer communities, Kowalski has been

just about everywhere and done just about

everything: Futsal Team coach and player,

college head coach at the NCAA Division I

and II levels, U.S. National Team interim head

coach, and Major League Soccer and A-League

head coach.

Prior to his second coaching job at Robert

Morris, Kowalski was the head coach of the

Pittsburgh Riverhounds, where he compiled a

26-26-4 record in two seasons as the first head

coach in franchise history. In 1999, Kowalski

led the Riverhounds to a second-round playoff

appearance and the A-League “Franchise of the

Year” award. From 1997-98, Kowalski coached

the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer,

leading the team to the playoffs in 1997.

In his first stint as head coach of RMU,

Kowalski guided the men’s soccer team from

1989-96, helping the Colonials become the

first squad other than men’s basketball to

qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 1993-94.

During his tenure, Robert Morris was ranked as

high as No. 16 nationally (1995), and Kowalski

earned NEC Coach of the Year honors in 1992

and 1995.

Kowalski spent 10 years (1986-96) as

head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Futsal

team, bringing home a second-place medal

in the 1992 FIFA World Championships. The

silver medal represents the best finish by a

United States men’s team in a Fédération

Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)

sanctioned event.

He also coached the U.S. Under-20 team in

1993-94 and served as interim head coach

of the U.S. National Team in 1991, putting

together a 1-1-1 record. Between 1979-85,

Kowalski coached in the Major Indoor Soccer

League, spending two seasons with the

Cincinnati Kids, two with the Hartford Hellions

and four years with the Pittsburgh Spirit,

compiling a 106-82 record.

Kowalski is a 1973 graduate of the University

of New Haven, where he was a four-year

letterwinner for the men’s soccer team and

earned an undergraduate degree in commercial

art and advertising. Kowalski began his

coaching career in 1973 as an assistant coach

at New Haven while playing professionally for

the New Britain Falcons of the Connecticut

Soccer League. He helped guide New Haven

to five NCAA Division II NCAA Tournaments.

Kowalski also played professionally in the

Major Indoor Soccer League for both the Kids

(1978-79) and the Spirit (1979-80).

First Season at Robert Morris / Robert Morris ‘08

Jessica Onufer is in her first season as a member of the coaching staff at Robert Morris. Onufer will serve as a goalkeeper

coach for the Colonials two seasons after ending a spectacular four-year career at RMU.

Onufer, a 2008 graduate of Robert Morris, sits atop the record books in nearly every goalkeeping category. As a four-

year letterwinner, she is second all-time in career games started in goal for the Colonials with 59 games and in wins with

15. Onufer is also ranked first in shutouts and goals against average for her career at 9.5 and 1.68, respectively. She is

ranked third in career goals allowed with 88 and fourth in total saves with 351.

During the 2004 season, Onufer set a single-season record for fewest goals allowed with 13. In 2006, she set the

single-season record for goals against average at 1.54 and save percentage at .803, and was ranked 35th in the nation

with 6.11 saves per game. Onufer also was ranked third in save percentage in the Northeast Conference at .803 and

fourth in saves with 110.

During her senior season in 2007, she reset both of the records she set the previous season, upping her record for save

during the 2007 season at 6.5 per game, good enough to rank 33rd in NCAA Division I. During her senior season, she

ranked second in the NEC in saves with 117.


2009 OutLOOk

Despite winning the second and third most games in team history over the past two seasons, the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team and ninth-year head coach John Kowalski are not satisfied. A first-ever trip to the Northeast Conference Tournament would be a start. But ultimately, a NEC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament would meet the team’s goals. With nine starters and 14 letterwinners coming back to the team, the 2009 Colonials are in a great position to achieve their goal. The team’s top five scorers return along with 16 of the team’s 22 goals. The team will have to replace starting defender Emily Schock and goalkeeper Caitlin Dilal while working with a short roster of just 17. However, the majority of those 17 players have seen significant playing team and one full season together playing as teammates. The Colonials return impressive firepower at forward led by junior Kathleen Caggiano and sophomore Jess Sharik. Ayana Davis, a sophomore who ran track and field for RMU last year, and sophomore Rachel Sebbens provide depth and talent at the forward position.

In just two seasons, Caggiano has moved into third place on the Colonials all-time points list with 39. She had 26 points as a freshman and tacked on six goals and an assist for 13 points last season. Sharik led the team in scoring with 15 points and assists with seven as a freshman and should add to those numbers this season. Sebbens proved to be dangerous as a rookie last year, scoring two goals and adding an assist for seven points. Davis is a strong, fast player who should make an immediate impact up top. Robert Morris has a plethora of experienced players to pick from in its midfield. Seniors Chelsea Miazgowicz and Daneen Stevenato will provide leadership to a relatively young but experienced group. Stevenato finished third on the team in scoring last season with five points on two goals and an assist while Miazgowicz tallied a goal while playing through some nagging injuries. Junior Jennifer Tobar has seen a lot of time at outside midfield the last two seasons, scoring a goal and garnering two assists as a sophomore. Classmate Jaimie Morra is likely to earn back her starting role after playing in just five games last season due to injury. Junior Jessica Stubbs will continue to be another option as either a starter or a sub.

Sophomore Lauren Thomas and Brianna Bell were each spot starters at points last season while getting plenty of time on the field. Both should contribute even more this season, giving the team seven solid options in the midfield. Defensively, the Colonials return three of last season’s starters – seniors Jessica Weary and Katie Castner and junior Christy Basldesberger. Sophomore Holly Sieradzki is the frontrunner to lock down the other opening position. Weary has a been a three-year starter and, last season, proved she can be dangerous in the offensive third of the field tallying two goals and an assist. For the second straight season, Robert Morris will be breaking in a new goalie. This year, the position will have to be taken by one of two freshmen following the graduation of Dilal. Jessica Olin and Heather Schultz will battle for the starting position. Olin helped lead her team to three consecutive district championships while earning a spot on the all-section squad and the West All-Star team. Schultz was a four-time all-league pick, posting 11 shutouts her senior season and 40 for her career.

Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is a private institution located in the Pittsburgh region offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. Approximately 5,000 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students from nearly every state and 40 countries are enrolled at RMU. The 230-acre campus in Moon Township, 15 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport and 17 miles from downtown, continues to blossom and grow. A new football stadium opened in 2005 and an apartment-style residence hall opened in 2006. This year the university is breaking ground on a new business school with state-of-the-art simulated stock trading floor. Additionally, the campus offers classes online and at its Pittsburgh Center in the heart of the downtown. The 32-acre Island Sports Center on Neville Island provides two indoor and two outdoor skating rinks, an indoor driving range, exercise equipment and other athletic and conference facilities for the university and the community. RMU built its reputation by offering strong aca-demic programs in traditional business fields such as accounting, finance, marketing and manage-ment. To prepare students for success in a chang-ing and competitive workforce, the university has created programs in communications, information systems, engineering, mathematics, science, ed-ucation, social sciences and nursing in the past decade. The university now offers 60 undergradu-ate programs and 20 graduate programs. RMU is a teaching-centered institution, featuring small classes taught by faculty members and a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. More than 90 clubs, student organizations, fraternities, sororities, and special interest groups help students develop leadership skills, network professionally and meet new friends. RMU has 23 NCAA Division I varsity athletic programs and 17 club sports teams. Pittsburgh is compact, cultured, safe, neighborly, historic and very affordable. acaDEMic pROGRaMsOther programs open to qualified undergraduate students include: the Patriot Scholars University Honors Program, in which students follow an advanced curriculum including an honors seminar and thesis project; the Cooperative Education Program, in which students alternate semesters of academic study with up to four semesters of paid employment in their career field to gain extensive work experience and earn up to $35,000; and Study Abroad, which offers opportunities for international study in Australia, China, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

tuitiON, ROOM, bOaRD aND FEEsRobert Morris University has one of the lowest tuition rates of any private university in Pennsylvania. The annual tuition for first-time undergraduates in 2008-09 was $19,190, based on a 24- to 36-credit, two-semester schedule. Additional tuition

charges apply for certain majors. Room and board fees are $9,880 annually, based on double occupancy and a full meal plan.

stuDENt ORGaNizatiONs aND actiVitiEsA wide range of activities and experiences is available at RMU, and students are encouraged to get involved in existing activities or establish new ones. Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. Taking the reins of the university during a period of unparalleled growth, Dell’Omo quickly developed a clear vision for RMU as a place that provides transformational experiences for students through engaged learning. He assembled a committee of faculty, staff, students and trustees, and charged them with turning his vision into a roadmap for the future. By the end of Dell’Omo’s second year, the university had unveiled a refined mission statement, six core values, and a

comprehensive five-year strategic plan to guide RMU into the year 2012. In addition, a new 10-year campus master plan was set in motion to guide RMU’s evolution to a more residential campus with a strong living-learning environment. Dell’Omo’s tenure has been marked by a greater emphasis on internationalism in student experiences, faculty research and exchanges, and academic programs and partnerships, to better prepare students for success in today’s global society. Key achievements include accreditation of the School of Business by AACSB International – The Association to Advance College Schools of Business; accreditation of the School of Education and Social Sciences by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council; creation of the Student Engagement Transcript; increases in the number of RMU students studying abroad and the number of international students studying at RMU, and the establishment of academic partnerships with schools in Chile, China, Germany, Nicaragua, Turkey and Israel. Dell’Omo also has committed to building the Institutional Advancement division by providing a greater focus on fundraising, alumni relations and brand building – all of which are key to supporting the university’s continued growth. In his first four years, Dell’Omo has overseen the construction or renovation of numerous buildings, the addition of several degree programs, and the launch of a new alumni magazine, athletic logo and mascot. Known as a “people’s president,” Dell’Omo places a high level of importance on staying connected with the campus community. He has expanded the annual new student orientation and attends all freshman seminars to meet new students each fall. He holds regular Town Hall Meetings to keep faculty and staff updated on the latest university happenings, and sometimes sits in on new employee orientation sessions. A strong supporter of RMU athletics, he regularly attends Colonial football, basketball and other sporting events. He has reached out to thousands of RMU alumni by attending alumni events in Pittsburgh as well as New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. He was Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002 and dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school to AACSB accreditation. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management. Before SJU, Dell’Omo served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to his career in academia, he spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues. Dell’Omo holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University, a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers and a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds certificates from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management and the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents. Dell’Omo sits on the boards of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, National Association of Corporate Directors Three Rivers Chapter, the Rutgers Food Policy Institute, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo remains an active consultant to universities throughout the nation on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children – Lara, Nicholas and Vincent.

Robert Morris University stayed in house to hire its latest director of athletics, naming Craig Coleman, M.D., to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coaches RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his fifth academic year in 2009-10. He replaced the late Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D, who passed away in January 2005. Under Coleman’s watch, the department of athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in school

history. Coleman has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris logo and mascot as well as the launching of the new official website for Colonial athletics at www.rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history as well as the addition of field hockey head coach Olivia Netzler. All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 19 years. During that period, RMU has won four Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.” Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 19 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 463-413-4 (.528), including a record of 198-78-2 (.716) in conference play. In 2007, Coleman garnered his 400th career victory in game one of doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom. His players include 11 District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.
