Matthew Deppe, Madison County Extension Education DirectorMatt Deppe has been involved with several key groups and programmatic areas to make life better for Madison County residents. In each case, ISU Extension and partners have created learning opportunities based on the needs of a growing community. These opportunities have proven to provide long term outcomes for clientele and establish ISU Extension as a leader in positive community and personal change in Madison County.

Kyle Jensen, Southwest Iowa Crops SpecialistKyle Jensen has rapport with extension clients and does an excellent job in programming. His Private Pesticide Applicator Training sessions are well received. He works well with county extension directors and county offi ces. His knowledge and background are an asset to his job as a crop specialist. He has demonstrated leadership and is a team member. Kyle is dependable, organized, professional, and is a committed individual for ISU Extension.

Angela Nelson, Marshall County Extension Education Director Angie Nelson brings enthusiasm and creative spirit to Extension programming and services to assist county residents. She has developed hands-on learning in the Healthy Meals in a Hurry program. She is actively working on a small farm business incubator for new Latino and Anglo farmers and the Marshall County staff is learning language skills necessary to help Spanish speaking residents. Her ideas, strong partnerships and innovative programs shape the future for Marshall County Extension.

Steve Olsen, Cass County Extension Education DirectorSteve Olsen carries out ISU Extension’s mission in Cass County by offering balanced programming relevant to the needs of citizens. He cooperates with Extension professionals at the state and area levels to bring their expertise to bear on community needs and partners with individuals, organizations and communities to present research-based information that people can use as solutions to problems. He supports entrepreneurial efforts to strengthen the local economy.

Allen Ricks, Black Hawk County Extension Education DirectorFrom successful passage of the referendum to bringing ISU Extension to the urban community, Al Ricks is taking Extension to the future. Al cultivates collaboration and new partnerships across disciplines to build a strong and diverse local program. He serves rural and urban clients and under-served audiences—with radio programs, a new Latino 4-H club, a greenhouse partnership at the new school, classes for Habitat for Humanity, and by networking and visibility with other service agencies.

Neric Smith, Jefferson County Extension Education DirectorIn his short time with Iowa State University Extension in Jefferson County, Neric Smith has worked hard to establish and enhance many new and existing relationships in his county. He consistently takes a systematic approach in overcoming obstacles striving for positive outcomes by using research-based information. Neric’s idea of success is seeing connections made that result in the most effi cient use of resources. He strives for professionalism in fulfi lling the mission of ISU Extension.

Nancy Adrian, Washington County Administrative AssistantNancy Adrian has served as the Administrative Assistant for Washington County Extension since October of 2002. This position was created when the Washington and Johnson County Extension Councils voted to share a county extension education director. Nancy works closely with the CEED, making decisions in the day to day operation of the offi ce, promoting Extension programs, as well as doing the accounting, handling offi ce assistant duties, and assisting other staff in their job duties.

Paulette Cambridge, Southwest Area Offi ce AssistantPaulette Cambridge has served as an Offi ce Assistant in the Southwest Area Offi ce for more than 21 years. During her tenure she has seen many changes within Extension and staff. People who interact with Paulette frequently ask, “does she ever have a bad day?” She is known as a cheerful, caring person who will help anyone. By doing so, she has earned the reputation “if Paulette can’t fi nd the answer, no one can.”

Sandra Erickson, Decatur County Offi ce Assistant and BookkeeperFor nearly 40 years Sandy Erickson has been the front door contact for ISU Extension in Decatur County. Her strong offi ce skills, teamwork, and knowledge of the county are invaluable to staff and volunteers in programming. Through much organizational and technological change, she continues to adapt, acquire skills and improve performance. She has mentored several new offi ce assistants in the Southwest area. Clients and staff know Sandy will serve them in a manner exemplifying ISU Extension.

Eleanor Meyerhoff, Black Hawk County 4-H Program AssistantSaying Eleanor Meyerhoff has “green blood” truly gives you an understanding of how she feels about 4-H. Eleanor gives generously of her time to ensure 4-H programs are carried out in a timely and professional manner. Her desire to make personal contacts has built a strong volunteer base for the county program and has helped every 4-H’er feel good about himself or herself. No matter how busy Eleanor is there is always time for one more 4-H activity.

Jill Mims, Calhoun County Youth CoordinatorJill Mims exemplifi es the qualities that defi ne an Extension employee. Her friendly demeanor and sincere interest in helping young people make the most of their 4-H experience are her strengths. Jill is an offi ce team member by proposing her thoughts for discussion, assisting with other offi ce duties as needed, and serving as a “sounding board” for ideas. She maintains a strong presence with the community clubs, school enrichment activities, and workshop events.

Mary K. Wilkins, Story County Youth CoordinatorMary Wilkins provides vibrant, enthusiastic leadership for the Story County 4-H Program. Mary established the collaborations necessary to form a new urban 4-H Horticulture Club called Roots and Shoots by courting the Story County Master Gardeners Association and the Ames Garden Club. Both organizations are providing signifi cant fi nancial support and leadership in working with the new 4-H Club. Mary also was instrumental in helping Story County Extension meet the 3 percent growth target in 2008.

Stacey Wilson, Jasper County Youth CoordinatorStacey Wilson has been able to enhance the 4-H experience for youth in Jasper County. Stacey accomplishes this through hard work, creativity, and connecting with the youth and volunteers of Jasper County. In the past four years, Stacey has increased 4-H enrollment by more than 10 percent, doubling the number of total youth reached through 4-H programming. Creative programming and marketing has assisted in accomplishing these highlights.

Brian Lang, Northeast Iowa Extension Field AgronomistBrian Lang’s ability to stay on the cutting edge of crop problems and his commitment to local research amazes anyone who works with him. His peers and clientele throughout the state recognize his practical approach to problem solving and respect his work in forage and crop production. He conducted early research on soybean aphid eradication and crop sulfur defi ciencies. His agility, fl exibility, and motivation directly affects the profi tability and the viability of Iowa crop producers.

John Lawrence, Extension EconomistJohn Lawrence is recognized both locally and nationally as a leading expert on the U.S. livestock industry. He has carried out research projects and articulated the results to producers as well as policy makers and industry leaders. He has achieved high credibility as a forecaster of livestock market conditions, and as an unbiased interpreter of the changing structure of the livestock industry in Iowa.

Gene Mohling, Johnson and Washington County Extension Education DirectorGene Mohling is an exceptional Extension worker. His enthusiasm, innovation, and hard work in developing and delivering programs have generated a new vision for Extension. Gene has worked diligently at establishing the important networks, securing the resources, and building relationships necessary to lead Extension in new directions. He has anticipated signifi cant new opportunities and developed support to implement program organizational changes necessary to achieve success. His accomplishments and leadership exemplify Extension and enhance local presence.

Perry (Bud) Beedle III, East Pottawattamie County Extension Education DirectorBecause of Bud Beedle’s efforts, East Pottawattamie 4-Her’s have an innovative way to share their involvement and successes in southwest Iowa. Through discussions with KMA Regional Radio, he set up a cooperative effort with the station to present a live 2 1/2 hour radio show highlighting the 4-H members and program in the county. The station allowed Bud to develop the program and the ad revenues are a major source of funding for 4-H programming.

Kathy Jolly Vance, Louisa County Extension Education DirectorIn June when it appeared that Louisa County would experience record fl ooding, Kathy Vance began to issue daily updates on water levels and area conditions. By late June Kathy arranged for a makeshift offi ce in the shelter in Wapello to disseminate recovery information. She was also appointed by the Louisa County Supervisors as the Public Information Offi cer for the Flood Recovery Effort and handled the media through the crisis period.

Teresa Wiemerslage, Allamakee County Extension DirectorTeresa Wiemerslage’s communication skills elevate her above her peers. She excels at translating complex subject matter into everyday language people can understand. Her ease with using technology has been a key factor in the success of the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative and the related Northeast Iowa Food and Farm Coalition. Teresa’s creation of monthly webcasts has united the county teams and regional work groups by creating common language and focus.

The Ag Team Newsletter is a collaborative effort of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Specialists serving Southeast Iowa. It highlights new and ongoing programs, and demonstrates how extension staff members are partnering with others at Iowa State University and local communities to bring quality, sustainable programming to a variety of ag-related audiences.

Nancy Nicho, Woodbury County Families Field SpecialistNancy Nicho, originally a math teacher in her native country of Peru, has worked as a Families Field Specialist in Woodbury County for two years. She has identifi ed needs and opened new doors in working with the Hispanic community. Families and child care providers have improved their English skills and learned more about managing money, reading to children, and living successfully as families. Nancy has increased community partnerships and helped secure funding for these programs.

Annie’s Project has helped more than 1,000 Iowa farm women learn new skills in risk management, fi nancial management, commodity marketing, farm transition planning, and computer analysis. Moreover, participants have established a network with other female farm operators and agribusiness practitioners to help achieve their goals for their farming operations and families. Annie’s Project has grown to include programs delivered in 17 other states.

The Community Assessment Model (CAM) was developed at Iowa State University and has been used since December 2006 to assist and educate swine producers in the proper siting of new facilities. CAM objectively helps identify the most ideal locations for swine barns relative to downwind residences, fostering strong community relations and lessening potential odor nuisance situations. Iowa agriculture commodity groups hail CAM as a successful and proactive approach to swine farm siting.

The course helps prospective homebuyers learn about home buying and the homeownership process, and provides information and tools for people to be responsible homeowners. Applicants should be successful in selecting a home they can afford and in making house payments. The course is designed for lower income or fi rst-time homebuyers seeking homes in smaller communities or rural areas.

Bioeconomy Conversation II presentations, presentation support materials, and staff resources for promoting and delivering local conversations were a combined effort of content specialists and the communications unit. ISU Extension staff were able to provide Iowans with facts and facilitate local discussions surrounding the economic, social and environmental ramifi cations of the bioeconomy because of the complete package of professional communication tools produced by this project team. Iowans now can make informed decisions – of global signifi cance.

Extension’s reputation as a provider of research-based solutions depends on how well Iowans recognize and use our services. Organizational marketing is a key element to delivering needed information to targeted audiences while also building public and private support. Two southwest Iowa marketing workshops held in April 2008 gave nearly 90 Extension professional and county staff the latest tools for adding the “Wow” factor to brand recognition, business communications, offi ce image, and interpersonal relationships.

The program was developed to connect student learning to living on planet Earth.

Linda Nelson, Dallas County Extension Education Director

In Central Iowa, Linda Nelson is respected as a capable and resourceful Extension Director who partners internally and externally to provide outstanding programming in Dallas County. Promoting quality child care through Empowerment and Child Care Resource and Referral funding, partnering with the Natural Resource Conservation Service to staff an environmental education position, providing leadership for the “Acreage Answers” newsletter are examples of Linda’s programming accomplishments. Passing the Extension Referendum and establishing the Dallas County 4-H Foundation have been major accomplishments in building sustainability.

Kapil Arora, Agricultural Engineering Field SpecialistKapil Arora has demonstrated an exemplary ability to educate Iowa State University Extension clients by developing and delivering research-based information. Kapil has created a variety of educational opportunities targeted toward farmland drainage, nutrient management, water quality, soil erosion, composting, and renewable wind energy. Kapil has helped numerous consultants, service providers, and producers meet their educational needs by conducting unique programs at local county, state, and regional levels.Jerry Weiss, Swine Field SpecialistJerry Weiss is a dedicated Swine Field Specialist known statewide as a leader in youth livestock programs for Food Safety Quality Assurance, the environment, county fair events and farm safety presentations. Jerry implements outstanding programs to inform legislators and community leaders about livestock production and environmental concerns, plus created curriculum to train Hispanic workers in the livestock industry. Weiss effectively partners with local, state, and national producers. He has traveled internationally to share special swine educational programs.

Beverly Berna, Family Life Field SpecialistBeverly Berna’s outstanding ability to identify client needs and build community collaborations has resulted in the Partners in Learning Program, now completing the eighth funding year. As a result, 403 AmeriCorps members have contributed 198,649 hours of volunteer service to families in Dubuque County. Beverly partnered with the City of Dubuque to secure $867,600 in building acquisition and remodeling funds for the Multicultural Family Center, moving from a 700 square foot space to more than 6,000 square feet.

Virgil Schmitt, Extension Field AgronomistVirgil Schmitt has developed a reputation for using a wide range of new technologies to bring information and education to crop producers and agribusinesses in Southeast Iowa. Whether in a small group discussion, a one-on-one consultation, a large group presentation, or communicating electronically, Virgil focuses on the needs of his audience and provides a positive infl uence and strong leadership. At the same time, he enhances the quality of effort in co-workers by providing insightful direction.

Dan Burkhart, Fayette County Extension Education DirectorDan Burkhart’s strength throughout his career has been identifying and partnering with individuals and organizations to build stronger programs and outcomes for both ISU Extension and the partners. In that position she supervises and evaluates fi ve offi ce secretaries, coordinates out-of-state and in-state travel for staff, creates purchase requests and payment vouchers, assists with bookkeeping responsibilities, manages payrolls, serves as liaison for county extension offi ces regarding payroll and human resource questions, Coordinates and manages staff sick leave, vacation leave, and salary issues, manages staff workspace redesign, orders offi ce supplies and furniture, and oversees environmental safety and proper equipment operations of the State 4-H Offi ce.

Dean Adkins, Agriculture Program Director, KMA Radio, ShenandoahKMA radio broadcaster Dean Adkins is on a fi rst name basis with the Extension staff in southwest Iowa. Extension staff can call at any time for Dean to interview them about a program and visa-versa, Dean does the same with southwest Iowa Extension staff. Adkins is the agriculture program director at regional radio station, KMA in Shenandoah. Everyone in southwest Iowa knows Dean because he schedules a day to broadcast live at each of the county fairs in southwest Iowa. Dean also is the keeper of the agriculture calendar at KMA. Dean’s relationship with Extension staff and enthusiasm for Extension programs has led to the creation of new radio programs on KMA. About fi ve years ago, Dean Adkins created the program, 4-H America. This is a regular weekly interview with a 4-Her. Dean continues this program featuring one county 4-H program per year. Once a week, throughout that year, 4-Hers from the selected county are interviewed about their projects, activities, and progress. Dean Adkins appreciates the skills, knowledge, and information provided by Iowa State University Extension. He conducts regular weekly 5-8 minute interviews with southwest Iowa Extension staff. Dean’s efforts with Extension in southwest Iowa keep Iowa State University Extension in the public eye in the 4-state region of southwest Iowa, northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas, and southeast Nebraska.

Jon and Marcia Kenzenbaw, founders and owners of Kinze Manufacturing, Williamsburg, Iowa Jon and Marcia Kinzenbaw, are lifelong supporters of Iowa County Extension, the Iowa County 4-H program, Iowa County Fair, and Iowa State University. Each year, they sponsor all the 4-H communication event awards, numerous livestock trophies, and support the 4-H livestock sale. Jon and Marcia created their own Kinze award for small engine, tractor, and welding projects at the Iowa County Fair. As part of the Kinze award, 4-H and FFA members with these exhibits are interviewed by three Kinze employees and awarded $500 for the top award, $300 for the second place, and $200 for third place. The Kinze award has signifi cantly increased the number and quality of small engine, tractor, and welding exhibits at the Iowa County Fair.Jon and Marcia Kinzenbaw created a Professorship at Iowa State University in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department in 2007. In 2004 and 2006, Kinze sponsored the Iowa County Safety Fair which was organized by a group of 4-H’ers and taught by local individuals. They donated use of the Kinze conference center for this event. The fi rst Women in Ag Conference was organized in 2005 and Kinze was a $1,000 sponsor of the program. Each year since, they continue to support the conference at the same level.Jon and Marcia are innovative people. Jon and Marcia started their small welding shop in Ladora in 1965. Over the years, Kinze Manufacturing has grown into the largest, privately owned agricultural equipment manufacturer in the United States. Kinze employs more than 500 individuals and its products are sold in 20 countries.Jon is a lifetime member of the Southeast Iowa Research Association and supports the research farm in Crawfordsville. He is also a member of the Iowa County Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa County Corn Growers, and a previous member of the Iowa County Pork Producers prior to their disbanding.Each year, Jon and Marcia donate a total of six $1,000 scholarships to help graduates pursue higher education. Two scholarships are awarded at each of three school districts in Iowa County.

Tom and Helen Pollock, MalvernTom and Helen Pollock have been partners with Extension for more than three decades. Whether it is through the 4-H program, education or agriculture, they positively impact life in Iowa. They are dedicated to helping others, and often accomplish this through their partnership with Extension.Tom has been a 4-H leader for 25 years, touching and enhancing the lives of hundreds of youth. He is always willing to go the extra mile to help others, volunteering to lead workshops on topics such as Food Safety and Quality Assurance, and attending leader trainings so he is well prepared for any new changes brought to the programs.Helen has worked with youth through Extension and 4-H as well as through her role as educator. She has served as Communications Superintendent, assisted with award interviews, helped with workshops, and is a reliable fair volunteer.The Pollocks have also been strong advocates of Extension and agriculture. They were leaders in the Iowa Pork Producers, and have been involved as board members of the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research and Development for several years. Tom played an integral part in helping the board set goals and push forward the development of Extension and agriculture programs. He is a founding member and leader of the board for Iowa Quality Producer Association (IQPA). Tom is also on the steering committee for SIRE, Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy. Their goal of building an ethanol plant in Pottawattamie County came to fruition this past year.As friends and partners of Extension, Tom and Helen have provided leadership and commitment that have made a signifi cant impact in southwest Iowa.

West Liberty Foods, L.L.C.Iowa State University Extension and West Liberty Foods continue as partners to create a workforce knowledgeable and capable of providing safe food. Food borne illness is a serious threat among turkey processing plants and while all measures were taken to design a state-of-the-art building for food safety, without thorough training for employees plant shutdowns, profi t losses and contract losses were a concern. Iowa Turkey Growers Cooperative management staff turned to Iowa State University Extension to develop a Food Safety Training program for potential plant employees.As a result:• From March 2003 to present, state, area and county

extension personnel have taught 239 classes for 3,216 individuals.

• West Liberty Foods has developed an industry-leading food safety training program for its employees, has become the fi rst turkey processing plant in the United States to achieve ISO-14001 (International Organization of Standardization) certifi cation, and has received the Seventh Annual Food Quality Award from DuPont Qualicon.

• West Liberty Foods shared its expertise in food safety processes and education programs with those attending a Food Safety Summit at the ISU Meat Laboratory in Ames.

• The company is partnering with the Department of Homeland Security through its new IMAGE program (Immigration and Customs Enforcement Mutual Agreement between Governments and Employers).

• A similar plant has been established in another state using Iowa State University Extension guidelines for training

Bill Winkleblack of RolfeBill Winkleblack is a Pocahontas County leader who has devoted time and talents to Iowa State University Extension efforts to increase economic development within the county. As chair of the County Value Added Ag committee, he led recruitment efforts for Extension’s Iowa New Farm Family program for a new dairy and county economic development. His extensive involvement in county, community, business, agriculture, farm crisis, and dairy recruitment, makes him an outstanding “Friend of Extension.” He is a long time Extension supporter who often says, “ When Extension is involved, it gives credibility and structure to the organization or a project.”
