Our MissionOur MissionOur MissionOur Mission

At For Pete’s Sake Farm, we use

sustainable, organic practices

and work in harmony with na-

ture to produce its harvest in

due season. As stewards of the

land, we protect the environ-

ment and preserve the natural

ecosystem. Soils are healthy and

fertile, beneficial insects thrive, and the land rewards us with

vegetables that are full of vitamins, minerals, and good old-

fashioned flavor!

After a long winter’s nap, the greenhouse is buzzing with the

sights and smells of spring. In early March, over 100 varieties

of heirloom tomato, pepper, eggplant, and basil seeds sprouted

from their trays, stretching their newly formed leaves. You

could almost hear a sleepy seed yawn as the spring sunshine

beckoned them to come higher, grow stronger, and send those

roots deeper. For in a matter of days, the journey will begin

requiring strength to withstand the blustery winds, grace for

the creatures that may cause damage, and beauty to cause all

those who wander by to pause and see God.

“Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe and she laughs with a harvest. -Douglas Jerrold (1803-1857)

What’s in a name??What’s in a name??What’s in a name??What’s in a name?? Pete (peet) - a very special Australian

cattle dog (blue heeler) who, by de-

fault, found his way into our lives.

Although completely deaf from birth

(note the floppy ears!), Pete has learned

simple sign language and also relies on

our other dogs for “ears to hear”. His

hobbies include guarding the farm,

eating, dancing to music with a high base, and riding in the front

seat of any vehicle. Our farm with any other name just wouldn’t

be the same!!

Peat (peet) - soil material consisting of partially decomposed or-

ganic matter; found in swamps and bogs in various parts of the

temperate zone. It is formed by the slow decay of successive lay-

ers of aquatic and semiaquatic plants, e.g., sedges, reeds, rushes,

and mosses.

Because of the challenging ecological conditions of peat wetlands,

they are home to many rare and specialized organisms that are

found nowhere else. Some environmental organizations and scien-

tists have pointed out that the large-scale removal of peat from

bogs in Britain, Ireland and Finland is destroying wildlife habitats.

It takes centuries for a peat bog to regenerate.

Whether Pete or Peat, we think they’re both worth saving!
