No longer can the NorthwesternState Lady Demon soccer teamdescribe itself as young or inexperi-enced.

The 2009 version of the LadyDemons is packed with talent andexperience and looking forward to tehcoming season.

“We’ve been claiming to be youngfor several years,” said 11th year headcoach Jimmy Mitchell. “Now, for achange, this year’s team boasts one ofthe most experienced groups in ourprogram’s history.”

The Lady Demons, who finished 9-9-2 last year with a sixth place finish inthe Southland Conference at 4-4-1,returns 16 letterwinners, nine with start-ing experience and seven seniors. And this year’s squad appears to beready to run with the best of them.

“This is the most fit group we’veever had,” said 11th year head coachJimmy Mitchell. “That’s saying a lotabout them and what they did this sum-mer.”

“We have a really strong group ofgirls this year,” said senior defenderChelsea Brozgold, a preseason All-Southland Conference selection.“We’ve all been going out and workingsuper hard. Our goal is to win confer-ence and win the tournament.Everybody has high hopes and greatattitudes about everything.”

“We’ve all worked hard this summerand we’re reaping the benefits of it,”said senior goalkeeper Linday Strahan, and preseason All-SLC selection. “It’sreally awesome to see our whole teamcome together. We’re really looking

forward to the season.”“This year is going to be a really

strong group,” said senior defenderCaroline Seago. “Everyone is workinghard. The freshmen came in in reallygood shape and everyone is competinghard.”

Joining Strahan, Brozgold andSeago as seniors are forwards MaddyHall and Chelsey Gibbs, midfielderMissey Oakley and defender LacieHughes.

Sophomore forward Kayla Kingreturns as the team’s top returing scor-er after netting four goals with fourassists with 12 points last season.

Hall and Gibbs each punched in fourgoals and Strahan posted threeshutouts in the net after allowing anaverage of just 1.14 goals per game.

HEAD COACH JIMMY MITCHELL’SOUTLOOK ON POSITIONS

GoalKeeper“One area of concern for us lies in

the goalkeeping position. We return All-Southland Conference player LindyStrahan, however, Lindy is coming off ofan ACL injury that she suffered in thelast regular season game of the year.

“The other two returnees in goal areChristian Marks and Sam Furlow whoboth redshirted in the 2008 seasonleaving them with virtually no experi-ence in game situations.

“Lindy has been working hard toregain her form. She has special tal-ents that can keep you in games if sheis healthy. I expect her to round intoform fairly quickly, however, it will take a

Talented and experienced group eager for 2009 season

few games for her to be at full strength.“Christian and Sam have a bright

future but in an ideal world, they will getthis year to learn. If they are thrown intoaction, I feel as if they can do the job forus.”

Defender“Defense has traditionally been a

area of excellence for the us and thisyear should be no different. We returnthree starters in seniors ChelseyBrozgold, Lacie Hughes and MissyOakley. Heather Burt will redshirt dur-ing the ‘09 campaign leaving a spotopen for someone to step in and claim.

“The most likely candidates areCamerron Mason if she is fit from thebeginning and mentally ready to com-pete, or incoming freshmen KaliHellinghausen and Jackie Fink.

“We have three very experiencedplayers at this position. The loss of Burt

for the season is one that hurts but I feelthat either Camerron , Kali or Jackie willstep in and do the job for us. I am notopposed to moving someone from themidfield or upfront to the back if neces-sity calls, but I don't think that will hap-pen.

“I believe that we will be very strongin the defense and will put a lot of pres-sure on people not only in defendingbut also in attacking out of the back.

Midfield“This area potentially took the hard-

est hit after the 2008 season with theloss of several key players and starters.

“The midfield will return starterSarah Sadler and part time starterHaley Cheshier. Last spring the wemoved Rachel O'Steen to the midfieldfrom the forward position and feel thatshe can be an All-SLC player.

“Caroline Seago has shown signs ofbeing a dominate player as she hasgotten healthy and therefore has beenallowed to reach a high level of fitness.

“We are expected to get a boast inthis position from freshmen Ashley DeLa Rosa, Theresa Halle, Pippi Haase,Melodie Johnson and Marissa Lees.

Forward“Scoring goals is the toughest thing

to do in soccer and the end of the 2008season came down to this fact as thewe lost several games by a 1-0 score.

“That experience should fuel the firein this group to be a dangerous scoringthreat in this season.

“The Forward position will beanchored by returning starters KaylaKing, Chelsea Gibbs and MeaghanHunter. These three combine quick-

ness, craftiness and intellect to form apretty strong tandem at the forwardposition.

“Maddy Hall could be a dominateplayer in the SLC if she raises her levelof fitness. Megan Husson has the ath-leticism to be a force as a freshman ifshe is mentally prepared to competeearly, and Jeannette Coronel hastremendous technical ability.

“This group, I think, could be thestrongest group we have ever had atthis position, and that is saying a lotsince we have had greats such as ErinHebert, Brittany Cargill and Julie Zavalato name a few.

“I believe that this group, while nothaving the one individual that mightlead the conference in scoring, will bedangerous by committee. If we can getthem all firing at a high level at thesame time, good things will be in storefor the 2009 season.”

Jimmy MitchellHead Coach Gardner-Webb, 1990 • 11th Season at NSU • 18th Overall

In 10 seasons at Northwestern State, Jimmy Mitchell has transformed the Demon soccer program into onethat is recognized as a serious threat every year in and out of conference play.

Bringing a determined mentality to the field, Mitchell is highly regarded by his coaching peers in theNorthwestern State athletic department as well as around the Southland Conference and state. In addition tobeing looked at for his affable demeanor, he is respected for the achievements of the Northwestern State soccerprogram under his leadership.

“For the young women in the Demon soccer program, and for their families, Jimmy has been a strong and steady figure and an outstanding headcoach,” said Demon director of athletics Greg Burke. “He’s been everything we hoped when we hired him in 1999. He’s a friend to everyone in ourdepartment and a supporter of all things Northwestern. He is relentless in his efforts to continue improving Demon soccer and his list of achievementsspeak for themselves.”

Mitchell has taken the Demons to three NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure at Northwestern State. This feat makes NSU the only teamin Louisiana to earn three NCAA Tournament berths. The first came in 2000 after winning the Southland Conference regular season and tournamenttitles. Conference tournament titles took the Demons to the postseason in both 2002 and 2005.

The 2000 season team that celebrated NSU’s first NCAA tournament appearance also celebrated becoming the only Louisiana team to ever reachthe NCAA tournament. That same team also became the first Southland Conference team to win both

the regular season and tournament title. With a 15-8 overall record and 10- 2 conference mark, the Demons were defeated in the NCAA tournament by Montana, who went on to beatWashington in the second round.

That year, the Demons set Southland Conference records for wins, conference wins, goals (56), and corner kicks in a game (19) and season (129). The 2000 team also set 19team records and 29 other individual records. Before losing in the NCAA tournament, theDemons won nine consecutive games, matching another

school record. They also extended a

home winning streak to 13games, another schoolmark.

The 2000 squad placedfive players on the All-SLC

first team and four on the All-Louisiana team. Shannon Tenney was named Louisiana

Newcomer of the Year. The 2001 season was plagued with injuries to several key

players, which caused the Demons to have a losing record for the first timesince Michell took over in 1999.

In 2002, five first team All-SLC selections again came from the NCAAtournament bound Northwestern State team. The Southland Conference Player

of the Year (Katie Priest) and Freshman of the Year (Heather Penico) also camefrom the Demons. Priest and Penico also represented NSU on the All-Louisiana

first team while three other Demons earned honorable mention. After posing a 12-5-5 overall record and taking another Southland Conference

tournament title, the 2002 Demons took an automatic bid into the NCAATournament to College Station to face Texas A&M.

Mitchell led the team to a third place SLC finish in 2003 and a second place fin-ish in 2004. The 2004 team also made an appearance in the SLC postseason tour-

nament.

Page 15: 2009 NSU Soccer Media Guide

Page 13 • 2009 NSU Lady Demon Soccer Media Guide

In 2005, Mitchell steered the Demons to their third SouthlandConference tournament title and third trip to the NCAA Tournament. Thepostseason was a repeat of 2002, travelling to College Station and beingdefeated by Texas A&M.

In 2006, the Demons posted a 9-9-2 record and finished fourth in theSLC. Mitchell's squad bounced back in 2007 with a record of 11-7-2 whileplaying possibly the toughest schedule in school history. In the 11 wins, the Demons defeated in-state rivals Centenary, Louisiana Tech,Louisiana-Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette,Nicholls, Southern, and tied SLC champion McNeese State.

Mitchell’s team received public recognition from the NCAA for its per-fect APR of 1,000 on the multi-year rate earlier this summer. The NCAAannually recognizes college sports teams from around the country thatachieved an APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respec-tive sports. The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes’ eli-gibility and retention for a pre-determined time period. It essentially meas-ures how well institutions, and individual sports, are doing in advancingtheir student-athletes toward graduation.

Before coming to Natchitoches in 1999, Mitchell slated seven years ofhead coaching experience with a 73-57-3 overall record. Just one yearprior to taking the reigns at NSU, Mitchell led his Belmont Abbey team toa 20-4 record and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance. That teamwas eliminated from the NCAA field by Lynn University which went on towin the national championship that season. Mitchell also served as anassistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte from 1995-1995 when the49ers were ranked in the nation’s top 10 first-year programs in Division I.

While Mitchell can boast numerous team honors, he also has severalindividual honors on his shelf. He was named Southland ConferenceCoach of the Year in 2000 and 2002 and Louisiana Coach of the Yearthose same seasons. In 1998, he was named Coach of the Year for theCarolina-Virginia Athletic Conference after his team swept regular season

and tournament titles and advanced to the brink of the NCAA Final Four.He earned that same honor in 1996 when his Belmont Abbey team post-ed a 13-8 record, improving from 4-12 in the 2005 season.

Mitchell received a contract extension prior to the beginning of the2007 season. His multi-year deal joins men’s basketball head coachMike McConathy as the only multi-year contracts in school history.

“The high level of performance athletically and academically by ourwomen’s soccer and men’s basketball teams represent the ideal of whatwe aim for at Northwestern State University,” said Burke. “Mike andJimmy are extremely dedicated, loyal and passionate about the welfareof their student-athletes, and they’re deserving of this token of apprecia-tion from the university.”

The Demon Soccer Complex has also undergone transformation withMitchell at the helm. Lights were added to the field before the 2004 sea-son and an improved playing surface was laid. New concession facilitiesand restrooms were added while new leisure areas along the fence of theplaying field spruce up the entire complex. A new entrance area withgates is aesthetically pleasing and provides handicap accessibility. Withthese and other improvements, the Demon Soccer Complex has becomeone of the premier soccer facilities in the region.

The Mitchells have settled in Natchitoches with their beloved BoykinSpaniels, Mattie, Rusty and Sassie. Glenda, who received her doctoratedegree in August of 2003, is a teacher at the Louisiana School for Math,Science and the Arts, an academically accelerated residential high schoolserving some of the state’s elite young minds. The Mitchells have twosons - Brody, who was born on March 13, 2006 and Cole, who was bornApril 30, 2008. In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continuesto be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic andathletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, theSouthland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 memberuniversities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology)and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference seton an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the leaguemembership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition ofthe University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southlandinto the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and aca-demic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage.

In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of LamarUniversity, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, SamHouston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, theUniversity of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos.

All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current stu-dents and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conferenceschools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor DanRather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington),NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (SoutheasternLouisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence(UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen(Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington).

The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business andcultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, tothe historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oilboom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities ofThibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of studentsfrom the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport.

The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eightmen's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and out-door track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The Conference earns auto-matic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's andwomen's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's tennis, and volleyball.Southland Conference football ranks among the best FootballChampionship Subdivision (FCS) leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of compet-ing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advancedto the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the leaguejoined FCS in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 89 Division I playoff games in 27 years, winning 42 of the contests.

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President

Dr. Randall J. Webb never misses a chance totell people about the good things happening atNorthwestern State University. And Webb has beenresponsible to many of those accomplishments.Webb became NSU's'17th president in July 1996and is the second-longest serving president in theuniversity's 125-year history.

During Webb's tenure, enrollment exceeded10,000 students for the first time, peaking at 10,505students in the fall of 2004. The university also set

records for total graduates in an academic year. With the implementation of selective admissions in the fall of 2005, the aca-

demic preparation of freshmen students has increased considerably. Overallenrollment initially decreased after the implementation of selective admissions, but has begun to increase again.

Northwestern has improved its academic programs while attracting better-pre-pared students. The average ACT score of students has risen under Webb'stenure, and student leaders are choosing NSU in large numbers. The universityhas dramatically increased the number of high school valedictorians and saluta-torians among first-time freshmen.

While Webb has been president, Northwestern has increased the level ofactive external grant and contract funding from federal, state and private sourcesto approximately $20,000,000 annually.

The university raised more than $34 million from alumni, friends, supporters, and private industry in its first-ever capital campaign, which exceeded its $18.84million goal by more than $15 million. A new capital campaign, in honor ofNorthwestern's 125th anniversary, is now underway.

The university has received donations or pledges for its first three $1 millionendowed chairs. Northwestern also has 34 endowed professorships worth$100,000 each.

NSU has also moved boldly to deliver instruction to students wherever theyare. Under Webb, the university has become a state and regional leader in bring-ing classes to students by compressed video and the Internet. The universityoffers over twenty degree programs via the Internet and is looking to add moreprograms in the future. More than half of the students at Northwestern take anelectronic class.

Under Webb, the university has modernized and improved its facilities. A $6.9million Wellness, Recreation, and Activity Center was completed in the center ofthe campus on the site of the old Intramural Building. Projects to renovateMorrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building and Williamson Hallwere also completed. West Caspari Hall was demolished and funding has beenreceived to reconstruct West Caspari as a three-story, one-stop center for studentservices. Plans call for renovating East Caspari Hall in the future. Northwesternhas also built University Place Phases I and II, providing on-campus studentswith modern residence facilities that best meet their needs.

Additional projects include replacement of the entire underground electricaldistribution system and the steam distribution system and the improvement ofdrainage and replacement of the turf at Turpin Stadium.

A one-time walk-on center for the Northwestern football team as an undergrad-uate, Webb has been one of the most avid supporters of the university's athleticprograms.

Since returning to the Northwestern campus in 1989, Webb has been active asa donor and volunteer. In 1994, he oversaw a successful Northwestern AthleticAssociation board of directors and served on the NSU Athletic Council. In 1995-1996, Webb was in charge of the Athletic Integrity Subcommittee for the univer-sity's NCAA Certification Self-Study.

He served on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the prestigious andpowerful NCAA Executive Council, which oversees all major policy decisions bythe governing body for major college sports. The Board of Directors enactedmajor academic reforms during his tenure.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education,Webb earned a master of science in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He receiveda doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 witha concentration in mathematics and research.

Webb was a member of the faculty at Longwood College in Farmville, Va., from1966 until 1974. From 1974 until 1976, he was the director of Higher Educationand Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education.

In 1976, Webb moved to Southeastern Louisiana University where he servedas director of institutional research and EEO officer from 1976 until 1983 and as

registrar and a part-time faculty member in mathematics from 1983 until 1989.Webb returned to NSU in 1989 as dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies

and professor of mathematics. In that position, he exercised campus-wideresponsibility for policy development, planning, advancement, and review of bothgraduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb was in that role, graduateenrollment increased by 35 percent and internal funding for faculty researchincreased by 200 percent.

As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU's successful FreshmanConnection Program. He alsoserved as a member of the writ-ing team for a grant proposalthat resulted in a five year $1.7million Title III grant to improvestudent retention. TheUniversity has been the benefi-ciary of additional Title III grantsin the ensuing years.

Webb chaired the SteeringCommittee for Northwestern'sSelf-Study for the SouthernAssociation of Colleges andSchools.

Webb led the effort to locateboth Boys and Girls State on theNatchitoches campus ofNorthwestern. These activitieshave benefited the Universityand the community and havegenerated increased interest inNorthwestern among the stu-dent leaders who participate.

He has also been active in the community as a member of the board of direc-tors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce. Webb was a member of theAssociation for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the NatchitochesHistoric Foundation, and the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society.

Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates ofNorthwestern. Tamara and her husband, former Demon All-American pitcherReggie Gatewood, are the parents of two children: Tyler and Ava. Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athlet-ic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding hisposition with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball outof the park from time to time but always taking an understated pro-file, seeing himself as a role player.

Beginning his 45th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impacton NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily asRipkin's Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indeli-

ble.He begins his 20th year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant

aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic direc-tor Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics compet-ing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year.

Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member of USTA teams that have wonmore than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and onenational championship.

Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce hadalready served his alma mater, adopted hometown and state withdistinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees university oper-ations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media rela-tions and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in governmentalaffairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as heworked under four previous presidents as Northwestern advancedfrom NAIA to NCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athletic sta-tus in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for theDemon football team during his college years, working closely withlegendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning his journalism degree,Pierce went to work for the New Orleans Times Picayune, serving asa reporter and editor. He was named executive sports editor at theage of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches andreturned to NSU as sports information director. He was promoted tonews bureau director two years later and assumed additional respon-sibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other areas through the years.

He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility inPrather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an enti-ty created in 1958. He established annual induction activities thatremain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director ofthe Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced himto step aside from the volunteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences(Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA

Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conferencethrough other offices and committee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director JoeDean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend EddieRobinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions tofilm the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, SallyField and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact ontourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana's higher edu-cation system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spo-ken at hundreds of events since 1965.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the JournalismDepartment faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thou-sands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and magazines.

At the outset of his 14th year as director of athleticsat Northwestern State, Greg Burke sees emergingopportunities for unprecedented success for theDemons and Lady Demons built partly from a founda-tion of many landmark achievements during his tenureas AD.

Athletics director at Northwestern since speaking atthe annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheonon August 29, 1996, Burke is the longest-serving AD atany Louisiana institution.

He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments whileoverseeing a program that has fielded championship caliberteams in nearly all of the school's NCAA Division I sports.

There have been 22 Southland Conference championships;16 teams in postseason play; 50 national award winners, mosteither All-America athletes or Academic All-America recipients;and three Olympic competitors.

NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only)Southland Conference member in the league's five decades ofhistory to sweep football, men's basketball and baseball champi-onships in the same athletic year. It's been done only once inSoutheastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, andonly four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time byMichigan State in 1979-80.

Those accomplishments have come with one of the moremodest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke'smanagement skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal.

Facility enhancements have been a main focus over the pastcouple of years. Beginning with the installation of a $1.1 millionMondo surface track in Spring 2007, NSU athletic facilities haverecently undergone nearly $6 million worth of improvements.Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for newscoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues andspearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. The installation of the new artificial turf playing field this summer has helped createmore than $1 million of additional renovations to Turpin Stadium.

Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, includingseveral whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national promi-nence in subsequent positions.

Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two Burke coaching hires had Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their

second seasons and have been back to postseason since.Basketball coach Mike McConathy was hired in 1999 after 16 seasons as a jun-

ior college head coach. In his 10 years, the Demons have reached the conferencetournament championship game six times, winning twice to make the school's first twoNCAA Tournament appearances. Most memorable was the stunning last second winover Big Ten champion Iowa in the first round of the 2006 tournament. That sameyear, Burke also broke new ground by generating private backing for the first long-term guaranteed coaching contract in school history for McConathy.

Women's soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell has taken three teams to the NCAA play-offs, making NSU the only Louisiana university to have multiple appearances.Dramatic facility enhancements have occurred in his eight seasons and Mitchell hasbeen rewarded with a multi-year contract.

Burke also picked head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Florida,Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Wichita State.

He recently landed LSU co-defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto to be theDemons' new football coach. Peveto and his staff promptly signed a 2009 recruitingclass ranked No. 1 nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision by Rivals.comrecruiting analysts.

From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a bal-anced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have beenmade in women's athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the firstone in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament. Softball has made three NCAATournament appearances. Volleyball has set attendance records and made its best-ever showings in conference play in each of the past four years.

While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source ofpride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set with-

in the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic success. In February, 2005,NSU led all state public universities in the NCAA's initial Academic Progress Ratesreport, which measures the job Division I athletic programs are doing to help advancetheir student-athletes toward graduation. NSU has continued to sparkle in subsequentAPR reports, with the men's basketball team ranking in the top 10 percentile in thecountry in 2006 and women's soccer sharing the national lead in 2007. In addition,NSU led all state public schools and was second in the Southland Conference in themost recently released NCAA Graduation Success Rate report.

In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America FootballFoundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and thatsame year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakersof 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff.

He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, MarlingtonHigh School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professionalachievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award wasinstituted in 1982.

In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at theNational Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention inNew Orleans, addressing members of the College AthleticBusiness Managers of America and also participating in a paneldiscussion of "Fundraising from an Athletic Director's Perspective"speaking to the National Association of Athletic DevelopmentDirectors.

Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAAChampionships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panelwhich makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors onkey issues facing Division I athletics.

He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division IFootball Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served aterm on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administersthe national playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke hasserved as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivisionplayoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of thecountry's premiere advocates of FCS football. He currently is thirdvice-president of the FCS Athletic Director's Association.

In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating,"fully certified," from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in sub-

stantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I member-ship.

Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active inthat civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the NatchitochesChristmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He isinvolved with the American Heart Association.

He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and elementaryteacher, have a 15-year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a sophomore at St. Mary'sHigh School.
