The 64 th Annual Meeting of the MASSACHUSETTS THORACIC SOCIETY The 64 th Annual Meeting of the MASSACHUSETTS THORACIC SOCIETY WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 2009 American Lung Association of New England 460 Totten Pond Road, Suite 400 Waltham, MA 02451 Intended Audience This continuing medical education program is appropriate for physicians, thoracic surgeons, nurses, respiratory and health care professionals interested in respiratory disease and critical care medicine. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Understand the high level purpose, structure and progress to date of the Massachusetts Health Care Reform and direct health care consumers/patients to resources that can assist in making coverage decisions. Understand epidemiologic evidence for an association of sleep apnea with cardiovascular disease and death and be aware of the treatment for sleep apnea, especially in asymptomatic patients. Recognize the problem of under diagnosis of COPD; understand the current available pharmacotherapeutic agents and provide evidence from the large TORCH and UPLIFT trial about the value and impact of pharmacotherapy. Be aware of the ongoing evidence based practice research interventions related to sedation in the ICU and understand the paired sedation and ventilator weaning protocol. Understand the importance of the regimen of screening for lung cancer and properly utilize current technology.
