When the Liberty men’s soccer team took to the fi eld for its 2008 season opener against Bluefi eld, head coach Jeff Alder’s squad found itself in a positi on no other Flames men’s soccer team had ever been. For the fi rst ti me in program history, the Flames entered the year with a target on their backs, aft er a 2007 season which saw them capture their fi rst Big South Championship, and be ranked every week in the South Atlanti c Region poll. On a humid aft ernoon at Liberty Soccer Field, a young Flames team with four freshman starters took to the pitch against the Bluefi eld Rams. Newcomer Darren Amoo scored three ti mes in his fi rst collegiate contest, as the Liberty controlled play throughout the contest for a 3-1, late August victory. Three days later, the Flames moved their home unbeaten streak to nine straight contests with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Campbell Camels in Lynchburg. Hermann Trophy Watch List member Joshua Boateng received a pass in transiti on from Karol Chorak, blasti ng a shot in stride for the game’s lone goal in the 36th minute. In its fi rst road contest at Marshall, Alder’s squad ran out to a 2-0 advantage before intermission, behind goals by Amoo and senior Cameron Chastain. However, the host Thun-dering Herd evened the contest with two goals during the fi rst 20 minutes of the second half, only to see Flames freshman midfi elder Juan Nino thread a pass through several defenders in the penalty area to senior Justi n Willoughby at the far post. Alone on the left side of the net, the senior put it home for a 3-2 victory and a 3-0 start to the season for the Flames. In the next match, Liberty dropped its fi rst contest of 2008. Opening Big South Confer-ence play at Radford, the Flames struck for a

goal off a corner kick eight minutes into the second half. The host Highlanders rebounded for two late goals for a 2-1 triumph. Aft er suff ering its fi rst setback of the year, Liberty returned to home to face the nati on’s No. 7 ranked team, North Carolina. A goal by Boateng late in the fi rst half cut the Flames’ defi cit to 2-1 at halft ime, but the Tar Heels broke open a ti ght contest late with two goals for a 4-1 win. Liberty halted its skid with a 3-0 victory two days later at Howard. Nino, Chris Phillips and Chris Mandell each nett ed goals in the triumph. Flames goalkeeper Paul Gilbert made a career-high eight saves in the second shutout by Liberty in 2008. Aft er going down to defeat at Winthrop in conference acti on, 3-1, Liberty closed the month of September with a Big South meeti ng at home with High Point. Boateng nett ed his fi ft h goal of the season, Willoughby added his second and freshman Alex Verville scored his fi rst, all in the fi rst half of play, en route to a 3-1 win. The Flames’ fi rst conference victory allowed Liberty to fi nish the fi rst full month of the campaign at 5-3. October started with a tough setback for Alder’s squad in conference acti on against Coastal Carolina at home. Aft er having fought back to ti e the game in the fi nal minute on a goal by Boateng, Liberty fell in overti me to the Chanti cleers, 2-1. Four days later, the Flames stepped out of conference with their annual trip to Virginia. The No. 18 Cavaliers defeated Liberty, 3-0, evening the Flames’ record at 5-5. It was the last ti me the Flames would drop a contest the rest of the season. Liberty went on to run off an eight-game unbeaten streak to close the season, starti ng

with a 3-0 victory over Southern Virginia. On senior night, Boateng scored twice and Wil-loughby added another in the win. Goalkeeper Andrew Madero earned a shutout in his fi rst contest in goal for the Flames. On the weekend, Chastain and Boateng each scored goals in a 2-1 win at new Big South Conference foe Presbyterian in the fi rst-ever meeti ng between the two squads. Liberty made it three-straight victories by downing Big South co-leader Gardner-Webb in convincing fashion three days later in Lynchburg, 3-0. Boateng scored twice, while midfi elder Juan Guzman returned from injury to score his fi rst goal of the season in the win. The Flames extended their unbeaten streak, as Boateng scored late in the second half of a

non-conference match to ti e the Longwood Lancers in Farmville, Va., 1-1 in two over-ti mes. For his play against Gardner-Webb and Longwood, Boateng was named the Big South Player of the Week. The forward scored three goals during against the two teams. Liberty fi nished the road porti on of its regular-season schedule in grand fashion at VMI. Aft er exchanging goals in the fi rst half, the second half went scoreless, pushing the Flames and Keydets into overti me in the Big South match. With ti me winding down in the second overti me, Guzman was able to fi nd an open Nino on the left side of the penalty area. The freshman midfi elder fl icked the ball past a sprawling VMI keeper for a 3-2 win in the fi nal minute of double overti me. The regular season came to a close the following Saturday. Despite carrying play and outshooti ng UNC Asheville, 13-5, the Flames were not able to score, tying the Bulldogs, 0-0. With the deadlock, Liberty completed its Big South schedule at 4-3-1 and entered defense of its 2007 Big South Champion-ship, as the tournament’s fi ft h seed. The 9-5-2 Flames opened the 2008 Championship against the fourth-seeded High Point Panthers in Conway, S.C. The night before their fi rst round match-up with the Panthers, several Flames took home conference honors. Defender Mike Gelatt and Boateng were named fi rst team All-Big South, while defender Douglas Nyame and midfi elder Daniel McGarry were named second team all-conference. Nino and Chorak were named to the conference’s all-freshmen

team, while Gelatt was named the men’s soc-cer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In their fi rst round contest the next day, High Point put Liberty down early with a goal in the sixth minute. However, the Flames defense sti ff ened, allowing Willoughby to ti e the contest shortly aft er intermission at 1-1. A header by Boateng in the 78th minute gave Liberty a 2-1 lead it did not relinquish down the stretch to advance to the semifi nals. There, the Flames met No. 1 seed Win-throp Eagles, who had played many memo-rable semifi nal contests with Alder’s squad in

the past several years. The fi rst half was a de-fensive struggle with neither team mounti ng much off ense, going to intermission scoreless. The second half conti nued that way unti l the Eagles broke through in the 80th minute with a goal on a free kick. Liberty fought back, ty-ing the game four minutes later and sending the contest to extra ti me on a free kick by Boateng. Aft er two scoreless overti me periods, the contest went to penalty kicks to decide who advanced. The Flames took an early 3-1 advantage, but Winthrop rallied to advance, 5-4, with a kick in the seventh round to end Liberty’s season. Despite not advancing, the Flames’ run was the eighth-longest unbeaten streak in the nati on at the ti me and is the third longest in program history. At the ti me, the streak was the seventh longest in the country. Boateng and Chastain each were named to the 2008 Big South All-Tournament team. A week later, Gelatt became the fi rst Lib-erty student-athlete to be named a fi rst-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American twice. In additi on, Boateng, Gelatt and Guzman were selected to All-South Atlanti c region teams. In December, Boateng was named to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer All-America team, becoming the fi rst player in program history to earn selecti on to a Division I All-America team. Later, the forward/midfi elder became the fi rst Flame to be taken in the MLS SuperDraft , being picked by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round.

THE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intention-ally fostering the academic, personal, so-cial, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Develop-ing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, re-ceiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s fi rst Commissioner and con-tinued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including vol-leyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retir-ing Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leader-ship, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi n-est teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kal-lander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the

Big South, Kallander has been instrumen-tal in aggressively promoting the Confer-ence to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the fi rst time in Conference his-tory, as well as increased national televi-sion exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competi-tion. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidifi ed Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advance-ments, as the Conference introduced its fi rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the fi rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution fi nish fi fth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Cham-pionships – the Conference’s highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed

three out of the last fi ve years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fi fth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Confer-ence’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty Univer-sity’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25 years. The Conference’s on-fi eld accom-plishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumula-tive 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of exis-tence.
