Conference Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respecti vely, by the GNAC offi ce on Monday. Wood ti ed for the team lead with 10 tackles and had two takeaways—a fumble recovery and an intercepti on—in leading the Wildcats’ defense against Mesa State. Rolsma averaged 40.6 yards per punt on fi ve punts, including a career-long 58-yarder, while splitti ng two fi eld goal att empts and making his only point-aft er-touchdown try.

DECENT DEBUT FOR ROBERTSON: Redshirt freshman Ryan Robertson turned in a decent collegiate debut at quarterback for the Wildcats last Saturday. Robertson completed his fi rst eight passes before fi nishing the game with 14 completi ons in 30 att empts for 205 yards and one touchdown. He was also intercepted once.

MORE DEBUTS: Eighteen players made their Central Washington debut at Mesa State, including eight players (six off ensive) who were in the starti ng lineup in their initi al contest. A total of 12 Wildcats made their fi rst CWU starts against the Mavericks, including senior receiver-turned-linebacker Matt Snell (Yakima, WA/East Valley HS), who made his fi rst start in his 32nd career game and fi nished with six tackles.

SENIOR-LADEN 2009 SQUAD: The 2009 version of the Central Washington football squad currently has 22 seniors on its roster, with a mix of experience at the collegiate level. Seven of the Wildcat seniors are in their fi ft h year in the program, having redshirted one season each (six of the seven redshirted the 2005 campaign), while six of the seniors will spend just one season in the Crimson and Black before wrapping up their collegiate careers this fall.

2009 TEAM CAPTAINS: Five seniors, including four fi rst-team all-Great Northwest Athleti c Conference players, were selected by their peers to serve as team captains for the Wildcats in 2009. Off ensive tackle Tony Quirk (Ellensburg, WA), cornerback Courtney Smith (Stockton, CA/East Union HS), wide receiver Johnny Spevak, safety Jerome Williams (Seatt le, WA/Ballard HS), and linebacker Buddy Wood will all be captains for Central this season. All fi ve were named team captains for the fi rst ti me in their collegiate careers.

DIVISION I PIPELINE: The Division I pipeline to Ellensburg conti nues in 2009, as four of this week’s projected starters have experience at the highest level of college football. Off ensive guard Andy Roof (Spokane, WA/East Valley HS) and linebacker Matt Ah You (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Lone Peak HS) both played exclusively at Division I schools prior to their arrivals at Central, att ending Washington State and Brigham Young, respecti vely, while two others – ti ght end Zach Hekker (Bothell, WA) and defensive end Eugene Germany (Pomona, CA) – began their collegiate careers at Division I schools (Weber State and Michigan, respecti vely) before landing at other insti tuti ons and eventually at CWU. Hekker is a transfer from Western Washington, while Germany, who redshirted for the Wildcats in 2008, played previously at Mount San Antonio College. Highly-touted linebacker Prince Hall (Moreno Valley, CA), who is listed as the back up to Ah You at middle linebacker, played the fi rst three years of his college career at the University of Alabama.

TRADING IN THE BLUE & SILVER FOR CRIMSON & BLACK: While the NCAA Division I route has been benefi cial for Central Washington, so is the road from Bellingham to Ellensburg eff ecti ve this season. The Wildcats have reaped the benefi ts of the disconti nuati on of the football program at archrival Western Washington University, adding fi ve former Vikings to the roster for 2009. All fi ve are likely to see signifi cant playing ti me, including Zach Hekker, the Wildcats’ opening game starter at ti ght end. Senior Randall Eldridge (Lynnwood, WA), a fi rst-team all-GNAC running back at Western last season, had 84 yards on 11 carries in his Central debut, while former Viking backup quarterback Cole Morgan is currently listed as the backup signal-caller for the Wildcats. A pair of redshirt freshmen – Dusti n Adams (Lake Stevens, WA) and Jordy Spriggs (Renton, WA/Kentridge HS) – are both expected to see signifi cant ti me in the Wildcat secondary in 2009 aft er redshirti ng at WWU last season.

THIRTY-ONE LEAGUE TITLES: Central Washington has won 31 conference championships in its illustrious football history, including the last three such championships in the Great Northwest Athleti c Conference (2004, 2005, 2008). The Wildcats spent two seasons in the now-defunct North Central Conference in 2006 and 2007, placing sixth and third, respecti vely, before returning to the GNAC for football prior to last season. All told,

The USA Today Sports Weekly poll had Central Washington in 16th ... In additi on to the team recogniti on, two Wildcat players were named to preseason All-American teams. Senior wide receiver Johnny Spevak was named a fi rst-team All-American by both Sporti ng News and by D2football.com, while senior cornerback Courtney Smith was tabbed as a second-team All-American by D2football.com.

VERSUS THE GNAC: Central has posted an incredible run against current (or recent) members of the Great Northwest Athleti c Conference. The Wildcats last lost to a GNAC member at the Batt le in Seatt le in 2004, falling to Western Washington (which has since dropped football). The current streak, including games against WWU, is at 25 entering the 2009 campaign.

BATTLE IN SEATTLE VII: For the seventh consecuti ve year, Central Washington will head west to Qwest Field in Seatt le to play at the home of the Seatt le Seahawks. Aft er winning fi ve of the fi rst six Batt les in Seatt le, all played against archrival Western Washington, the Wildcats will face a new foe at the Batt le in 2009 as they take on Western Oregon. Central will play the Wolves aft er Western Washington dropped its football program aft er the 2008 season. This year’s game is scheduled for Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., and ti ckets are available through Ticketmaster or through the Wildcat Shop on the CWU campus.

NO MORE ROTARY BOWL: The Rotary Bowl in St. George, UT, which had been a postseason opti on for a member of the Great Northwest Athleti c Conference each of the past two seasons, will no longer be a playoff opportunity as bowl sponsors announced the cancellati on of the 2009 game on Aug. 24. The top team from the GNAC and from the Rocky Mountain Athleti c Conference that did not qualify for the NCAA Division II Football Championship had represented those two leagues the past two seasons, with Western Oregon appearing in the game in 2007 and Western Washington in 2008.

FAMILY TIES: At least two players on the 2009 Wildcat squad have current family ti es to professional sports. Senior linebacker Matt Ah You’s older brother, C.J., is currently a defensive lineman for the St. Louis Rams of the Nati onal Football League (NFL), while cornerback Anthony Stewart’s older brother, Nate Robinson, is a two-ti me slam dunk champion and a guard for the New York Knicks of the Nati onal Basketball Associati on (NBA).

COACHING CHANGES: New to the Wildcat coaching staff in 2009 are wide receivers coach Charles Chandler, linebackers coach Scott White, assistant secondary coach Casey Clift on, graduate assistant John Gariano, and student assistant coach Anthony Blue. Chandler spent eight seasons as a Wildcat assistant previously (1987-94) following a standout playing career at CWU, while White is a former linebacker at Washington. Clift on played collegiately at Whitworth in Spokane and was an assistant at Western Washington last season, while Gariano and Blue are both former Wildcat off ensive linemen.

CAREER MILESTONES TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEK: • WR Johnny Spevak (43 touchdowns) needs one receiving touchdown to become the career record-holder for receiving touchdowns. He is currently ti ed with Kenny Russaw (1993-96) for the record. • Spevak (3,749 yards) needs 22 all-purpose yards to move into a fi ft h-place ti e with Pat Patt erson (1988-89; 3,771 yards). He also needs 251 all-purpose yards for 4,000 in his career. • Spevak (260 points) needs four points to ti e Russaw (264 points) for second on the all-ti me scoring list. • S Jerome Williams (512 yards) needs nine kick return yards to move into the school’s top 10 career list. • Williams (151 yards) needs one intercepti on return yard to move into sixth in career intercepti on return yards. He could also catch Maurice Hanks (1981-84; fi ft h, 160 yards) and Brian Matt son (1989-92; fourth, 166 yards). • CB Courtney Smith (462 yards) needs 38 kick return yards for 500. • Smith needs 59 kick return yards to move into the school’s top 10 career list. • Smith (496 yards) needs four all-purpose yards for 500. • K/P Garrett Rolsma (96 punts) needs fi ve punts to move into a ti e for 10th on the all-ti me list. • LB Buddy Wood (284 tackles) needs 16 total tackles to become the third player since 1980 with 300.

HEAD COACH BLAINE BENNETTHEAD COACH BLAINE BENNETTRecord at CWU: 11-2, second yearOverall Head Coaching Record: 38-34, eighth yearAlma Mater: Whitworth, 1987Age: 44 (October 15, 1964) Aft er a seven-year hiatus from the collegiate head coaching fi eld, Blaine Bennett returned to familiar surroundings as a college head coach and to the state of Washington when he was named the head football coach at Central Washington University on January 18, 2008. Bennett had quite a successful fi rst year on the Ellensburg

campus, leading Central Washington to a 10-2 record and the school’s second consecuti ve appearance in the NCAA Division II playoff s. The Wildcats also posted the fi rst 8-0 conference record in the history of the Great Northwest Athleti c Conference, landing nine fi rst-team all-conference players and earning Bennett the conference’s Coach of the Year honor. Quarterback Mike Reilly also fi nished as the co-runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2008 as the top Division II football player in the country. Bennett , 44, returned to an area he knew quite well as a youth, having been raised in both Ellensburg and Walla Walla. He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1983, playing football for his father, Shorty Bennett , and then embarked on a college football career at both the University of Idaho and Whitworth College. A 1987 graduate of Whitworth with a degree in secondary educati on and math, Bennett then spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at Washington State University and one season as an assistant coach at Chico State. He added a Master’s degree in physical educati on from WSU in 1990. As a collegiate head coach, Bennett is quite familiar with small college football in the Pacifi c Northwest. He spent six seasons as the head coach at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore., compiling a 27-32 record as the Wolves’ mentor from 1995-2000. During that ti me, he helped guide the school through a transiti on from the NAIA to NCAA Division II ranks, leading the Wolves to the NAIA playoff s and a Columbia Football Associati on championship in 1997. Following his coaching sti nt at WOU, which had also included three seasons as an assistant coach, Bennett spent six years at the NCAA Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision level as an assistant coach. He was the quarterbacks coach and recruiti ng coordinator under Joe Tiller at Purdue University from 2001-05 before becoming the assistant head coach at Michigan State University under John L. Smith in 2006. While at Purdue, he coached current Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton. In 2007, Bennett was the head coach at Lafayett e Jeff erson High School in Lafayett e, Ind. Bennett has been married to wife Melissa for 20 years. The couple has three children, sons Blaine John (17) and Matt hew (14), and daughter Brianne (16). Blaine John is a high school senior, while Brianne is a junior and Matt hew is a freshman.

WILDCAT DEFENSE BLANKS MESA STATE IN 2009 SEASON OPENER, 10-0Central Posts Lowest Winning Point Total in 26 Years, Holding off MavericksGRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (Aug. 29) — The 14th-ranked Central Washington University defense held Mesa State to 12 fi rst downs and kept the Mavericks scoreless as the Wildcats came away with a 10-0 victory in the 2009 football season opener at Stocker Stadium. Central improved to 6-0 all-ti me against Rocky Mountain Athleti c Conference members with the win. The Wildcats’ 10 points were the fewest scored in a victory in nearly 26 years, matching a 10-0 win at Western Oregon on Nov. 19, 1983. The game was scoreless unti l the opening drive of the second half, when redshirt freshman Ryan Robertson connected with preseason All-American receiver Johnny Spevak on a 68-yard pass play just 59 seconds into the period. That proved to be the game’s only touchdown as the Wildcats went in front 7-0. Central’s defense prevented any opportunity for Mesa State to score in the second half, preventi ng the Mavericks from moving the football inside the Wildcats’ 44-yard line on any of their seven second-half possessions. On one of those drives, Mesa started at the Central 44 before senior Jerome Williams picked off quarterback Robert Feldberg on the fi rst play from scrimmage. The pick was the 12th of Williams’ CWU career. The Wildcats added three insurance points on their fi rst drive of the fourth quarter, marching 65 yards on 11 plays before senior Garrett Rolsma kicked a 30-yard fi eld goal to extend the margin to 10-0. Earlier in the game, Rolsma extended his consecuti ve point-aft er-touchdown made streak to 67. Each team missed key scoring opportuniti es in its opponent’s red zone in the fi rst half, beginning with a fumble by Mesa State on its fi rst possession. Senior Marcus Ford forced a Joey Applehans fumble at the Wildcats’ 16-yard line, which senior Buddy Wood recovered to thwart the Mavericks’ fi rst scoring opportunity of the contest. Central squandered scoring opportuniti es on its second and third drives of the night, coughing up the football at the Mesa State four aft er taking over possession at the Mavericks’ six. They also got inside the fi ve yard line on their next drive before penalti es and a quarterback sack took the Wildcats out of the red zone. Rolsma att empted a 49-yard fi eld goal that was blocked, keeping the game scoreless at halft ime. Robertson, who completed his fi rst eight passes, fi nished 14 of 30 for 205 yards while playing the enti re game at quarterback. Spevak fi nished with eight catches for 133 yards, and his third-quarter touchdown was the 43rd of his career, tying Kenny Russaw for the school’s career record for receiving touchdowns. The Wildcats also logged 135 yards on the ground, led by 84 yards on 11 carries from senior Randall Eldridge. Junior Bryson Kelly added 41 yards on 14 carries, while senior Jerome Morris fi nished with 32 yards on eight carries. On defense, Wood and senior Matt Ah You led the way with 10 tackles apiece. Ford, Williams, and Wood all had intercepti ons, while Eugene Germany had a quarterback sack and four others each had a half sack. Mesa State totaled 155 passing and 97 rushing yards for the game, but had just 69 off ensive yards in the second half. Felberg was 13 of 24 passing with three costly intercepti ons, while Applehanz was the Mavericks’ top rusher with 48 yards on 14 carries.

QUICK NOTES: • The scoreless ti e at halft ime marked the fi rst such occurrence since Sept. 14, 2002 (CWU eventually defeated Carroll, 26-8). • WR Johnny Spevak ti ed the CWU career record for receiving touchdowns (43) with his third-quarter 68-yard TD catch. The recepti on was also the second-longest of his career (long is 71-yarder at Western Oregon on Sept. 13, 2008). • Spevak now has 3,539 receiving yards, becoming second player in school history with 3,500 or more receiving yards. • QB Ryan Robertson completed his fi rst eight collegiate passes before fi nishing 14 of 30 for 205 yards. • S Jerome Williams had his 12th career intercepti on, moving him into a four-way ti e for fi ft h on the all-ti me list. • LB Buddy Wood is now third in career tackles with 284. • DL Marcus Ford had his fi rst career intercepti on in the fourth quarter. • Mesa State LB Bennett Newton fi nished with 19 tackles, the most by a Wildcat opponent since Oct. 19, 2002 when Rob White of Western Washington had 20.
