US Navy Selects Moog to Supply Shipboard and Shore Based TACAN Upgrades

Moog has been selected by two divisions of the US Navy to redesign and

upgrade legacy AN/URN-25 (AN/URN-32 or MM-7000) TACAN systems.

The US Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego,

California awarded Moog a contract to upgrade shore-based TACAN sys-

tems, and the Naval Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Patuxent, River,

Maryland awarded Moog a contract to upgrade shipboard

TACAN systems.

The AN/URN-25 is the first newly designed 21st century

Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) beacon-transponder. The

upgrade (AN/URN-32/MM-7000) has a flexible configu-

ration, requiring only half of the existing cabinet space.

The TACAN has met all of the requirements set forth by

the US Navy, is suitable for fixed-site and shipboard

installations, and is compatible with the US Navy’s

standard OE-273 antenna and other mechanically rotat-

ing TACAN antennas.

World Leader in the Design of Innovative Navigation and Surveillance Systems

Moog’s experience in navigation and surveillance systems dates back to the 1960’s with a long history of product excellence and support

in both the civil and military markets. Our product heritage is based on supplying innovative system solutions to the US Department of

Defense. By the 1980’s, we were supplying complete shipboard, mobile and manportable TACAN systems to the US and its allies.

In 2009, Fernau Avionics Ltd. became part of Moog, bringing with it a highly talented workforce and broad range of navigation products

for civil, military and marine applications. The combined business is now able to offer customers a broad range of options to meet their

unique needs, all backed by world-class customer support. Moog plans to expand the global business and its innovative product offerings.

SPECIAL EDITION ATCA ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION OCTOBER 20 - 23, 2013

Moog Announces Alliance Agreement with ERA

Moog and ERA have entered into a strategic marketing

alliance for the ERA Multi-sensor Surveillance System

(MSS). The agreement will provide Moog’s established

customer base access to the latest Next Gen/SESAR

technologies for air traffic surveillance and will provide ERA

an expanded sales channel for MSS.

The ERA MSS system uses proven ADS-B and multilatera-

tion technologies, delivering a higher performance and more

cost effective surveillance solution than secondary radar.

It can be used to provide surveillance for terminal and

en-route areas as well as movement on the airport surface.

The system is already operationally deployed with over 100

systems located in 39 countries around the world. MSS

has an established track record being the first wide-area

multilateration (WAM) system certified and operational.

COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS AND INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS

Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)

DME provides information to the aircraft relating to its distance

from the DME enabling the aircraft to navigate safely to its chosen

destination. Transponder-based radio navigation technology is

used that calculates distance by timing the propagation delay of

pulsed radio signals. Ground stations are typically collocated with

VORs and ILS. Moog’s DME technology innovation yields significant

costs savings from real-estate, greater reliability, serviceability and

reduces through life’s running costs.

Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN)

TACAN is used primarily by military systems where other naviga-

tion systems perform too unreliably. TACAN provides bearing and

distance to the ground or ship with increased accuracy. This next

generation of TACAN allows for flexible configurations such as:

manportable, mobile, fixed and shipboard. The manportable AN/

TRN-47 is the world’s smallest lightest and most versatile ground

station. The 2010 Mobile system is self-contained and mounted

on a trailer. The MM-7000 is Moog’s certified shipboard TACAN,

meeting Mil Standard 901D requirements. Moog is the main

TACAN provider to the US Navy, Marines and Air Force.

Antennas

Moog offers a full range of

antenna solutions suitable

for any application. The AN/TRN-48, also known as the “Bulldog”, is a mobile 2010 TACAN and is supplied to the USAF.

2030 DF

The high resolution 2030 DF provides

accurate navigation information using

standard VHF, UHF and Marine band

radio systems. Technical advantages

include extensive BITE facilities, remote

control and indication of fault parame-

ters, remote fault diagnosis, remote

system testing and a modular, versatile

design which allows for expandability

as requirements change. The electronic package and flexibility of

configuration is identical to that of the wide aperture systems.

TACAN Excels in Flight Check

The US Navy recently performed a flight check on a single string version of the MM-7000, the AN/URN-32,

along with the OE273 Antenna. The system passed with 0% error and 100% accuracy for both azimuth and

distance. High engineering standards were set during the design of this system. The reply delay targeted small

tolerances, producing accurate outcomes. This was an exciting event for the NaSS team. This MM-7000 pro-

vides reliable, inexpensive, full service air navigation with the expected life through and beyond the year 2025.

AN/TRN-47 Supplier for Abbreviated Acquisition Program

Moog recently completed its contract with the US Navy to supply

the AN/TRN-47 as part of their Abbreviated Acquisition Program

(AAP), a program designed to deliver capabilities on an accelerated

schedule. Deliveries were completed ahead of schedule and Moog

currently has a new contract with NAVSUP for post-production

support as the mini-stock-point repair station for all AN/TRN-47

needs. This manportable AN/TRN-47 can be setup and torn down

in less than fifteen minutes by a two person team, providing for

various missions including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation

Iraqi Freedom and the Haiti Relief Effort. Moog has been a signifi-

cant provider of TACANS, including the AN/TRN-47, to the US Navy

(US Marine Corps) for over 50 years.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS AND DEDICATED SUPPORT

Moog Provides Support for Two Major Site Installs/Upgrades

Moog is performing a DF upgrade to 31 sites within the UK for the National Air Traffic Control Services.

These installations are taking place simultaneously with Moog’s UK MoD installs of Direction Finding

(DF) systems. All VHF and DF equipment has been built and supplied, and is being installed. Moog is

supporting the complex site installation, ensuring that all systems are upgraded and installed without

disruption of airport operations. Moog’s field service team has supported multiple site visits to ensure

all systems are 100% operational.

Contract Awarded for Littoral Combat Ships

Moog has been awarded a contract to provide TACAN equipment for both of the new Littoral Combat Ships

(LCS). The MM-7000 variant for the LCS vessels is a smaller, lighter, less expensive version of the US Navy’s

AN/URN-32 and provides 1kw transmitter power. All modules include the most modern, current technology by

utilizing state-of-the-art components/devices. The use of current technology significantly reduces the vulnerabil-

ity to future component obsolescence and improves reliability and maintainability while virtually eliminating the

requirement for on-site routine and preventative maintenance.
