Tired of standing in that long registration line? Well this year we are offering something Gnew and exciting! We have packed up and moved registration to the Sheraton, so instead of having to stand in that impossibly long yet well worthwhile line at the Hyatt you can stand in the new and improved hopefully not so impossibly long yet well worthwhile line at the Sheraton.

Were you disappointed with your thin badge from last year’s con? Well not to worry Gbecause we traded in all those pre-gut Riker badges for all new post-gut Riker badges. And for those of you who missed TNG (shame on you) we are going back to thicker badges.

Eternals, are you forever wondering why you have to stand in that everlasting line in GVIP badge pickup? Well your wait has come to an end. This year we are happy to announce that Eternals will have their own line in VIP badge pickup which will also be housed in the Sheraton.

Sticking with the Sheraton theme, fan tables will not only be located outside of the GGrand Hall of the Hyatt, but have fanned out to the Sheraton as well.

In response to an outpouring of requests from the Goth fan base, this year band tables Gwill be moving into the Marriott because the hotel is rumored to be using lower wattage light bulbs that are dimmer than the Hyatt’s.

This year’s Comic and Pop Artist Alley is going to be Super Man. So if you’re Kraven Gsome comic action, turn off the Cable and Dash on down to our new location in the Grand Hall West of the Hyatt. Hell boy, we reached Maxx capacity in the Hilton and have moved the whole Thing into the Art Show. 64|\/|!|\|6 |/\|!11 83 !|\| 7|-|3 |-|!170|\| 4|\||) 5|-|3|2470|\| 7|-|!5 ‘/34|2 G

(Gaming will be in the Hilton and Sheraton this year.)

If you don’t like fighting the crowds or just did a little too much late night celebrating Gand can’t make it out of your room, you will be happy to know that we will again be putting some of the daytime main events held in the Centennial and Atrium Ballrooms onto Dragon*Con TV. Make sure you keep your Pocket Program handy because it will note which events will be televised. And be sure to watch LIVe every morning at 9:00 AM for the BRaNd NeW D*CTV Morning Show! Don’t prentend you aren’t up, we know you haven’t gone to bed yet!

We are quickly approaching 400 guests for this year’s show, and by now you have Ghopefully been able to check out some of the talent who will be attending. With the quality and quantity we are bringing in this year, you will be happy to know that The Walk of Fame will stay in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton. We were shooting for a water (or adult beverage) station in the Leonard Nimoy line to break up the wait, but were told that our request was highly illogical.

We are using an online application process for bands and other performance groups. GBut don’t worry; just because you can apply via broad band don’t think all girl acts get preferential treatment.

This year we have established online programming for tracks. That might not seem Glike it means much for our attendees, but behind the scenes it means a lot. Our programming director and all of the varied track directors are a great group who volunteer their time to share something they love with you, the fans. And while they have done a stellar job in years past, having online programming will help them to get the most accurate information in a timely manner and smooth out any wrinkles that might arise ahead of time. So what this really means for you is that when you show up at the Sheraton for a Skeptics discussion panel, there is actually a Skeptics discussion panel actually taking place in the scheduled room instead of being greeted by a sign saying that your panel has been moved to the Hyatt.Speaking of rooms, the Hilton has renamed its programming rooms to use numbers Ginstead of names. This was done in an attempt to make it easier for those guests who take advantage of Fog Cutter Fridays to find their way to the correct rooms.Get your convention on G three hours earlier—official programming will now start Friday morning at 10:00 AM!Last year I witnessed a Klingon heckling Ga box trooper across the road between the Marriott and the Hilton. With his peripheral vision impaired, the angered box trooper attempted to cross the busy intersection between the two hotels to defend his honor after the size of his package had been called into question. All that remained of the cardboard Imperial was a few popcorn remnants and some packing tape. But don’t worry! I am happy to say that in an attempt to avoid a repeat of this tragic event, a walkway between the Hilton and Marriot has been constructed and is now open!None of us want to anger the Fire Marshal Ggods, so in an attempt to appease them, we have established not one, but two areas deemed worthy by the gods for all of you with fully loaded camera sidearms to do some shootin’! Unfortunately, the cameras will still need to be holstered from 7:00 PM until midnight on the Centennial Ballroom level of the Hyatt each evening. I almost forgot, this year’s charity is Gthe Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

arcattackArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up to generate an ‘electrifying’ audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA system while two specially designed DRSSTC’s (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments. These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt which put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers. The music consists of original highly dance-able electronic compositions that sometimes incorporate themes or dubs of popular songs. ArcAttack uses these machines in conjunction with other homemade and traditional instrumentation.

atlanta Radio Theatre Company“The Call of C’thulhu”

The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, in celebration of twenty-five years of quality, original audio drama, returns to its roots with an original adaptation by Ron N. Butler of H. P. Lovecraft’s highly influential tale of horror, The Call of C’thulhu. In 1987 ARTC performed this classic story at the very first Dragon*Con. That adaptation, by Gerald W. Page, has since been lost and, just as the Elder Gods slumber, this story slept as well in the memories of devoted fans of ARTC and Lovecraft. Now...the horror is reborn.

“Fresh Blood 2”

Original audio drama provokes the imagination as few other media can. Delving deep into the psyche of the listener, the sound effects, the music, and most importantly the story itself can incite feelings of elation, terror, jealousy, or even love and hatred for the characters. ARTC once again calls upon its troupe of talented writers to bring forth the best that the imagination has to offer with a collection of never-before-heard selections.

ayriaAyria (pronounced “area”) is anime, glam, 80’s, gothic Lolita, cyber, punk all wrapped up into an energetic ball of furry. Canadian singer/songwriter Jennifer Parkin has become a true icon on the electronic music scene with her unique writing and performing style. In 2003, she began her project Ayria and shook the foundation of the electro-industrial scene by mixing striking feminine visuals, straight old-school industrial music with harsher, aggressive electro while still maintaining elements of electro-clash and 80’s new wave. Ayria has been intensively and successfully touring across the globe over the past 3 years gaining a very solid reputation for putting on energetic live performances.

Bedlam BardsThe Bedlam Bards have been performing rowdy Celtic music at trashy bars, renaissance festivals, and sci-fi cons for over a decade. Their award-winning album On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity cemented their position as the musical voice of Browncoat fandom, won them a free cruise, led to numerous brushes with stardom, and gave them the chance to raise lots of money for charity. They have performed from one end of the United States to the other, as well as in Canada and Mexico. Their most recent album, Barnyard Bedlam, was recorded live at the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, and may violate morality statutes in several states.

Big City Burlesque and Vaudeville ReviewBig City Burlesque and Vaudeville is Atlanta’s original, all retro troupe. This unique concept is the brainchild of creator and artistic director Kenton McGhee, aka ‘King Rouge’, and has been painstakingly developed in both style and content. This dream to reality has been to recapture the sultry glamour and smoky magic of by-gone eras. From a seductive fan dancer of the late 30’s to film noir femme fatales of the 40’s, a bewitching belly dancer as well as comic heroines of all yesteryear, Big City Burlesque and Vaudeville was the first to bring this concept of Old World Vaudeville to the stage in Atlanta and today remains Atlanta’s premier Burlesque and Vaudeville troupe.

Crossed SwordsFor over twenty years, Nicole Harsch and Mike Sakuta have been performing the Crossed Swords Stage Combat Shows across the U.S. and Canada. They teach stage combat and have been fight directors for renaissance festivals and many historical plays including Hamlet, Camelot, Robin Hood, and Romeo & Juliet, and can be seen as performers in two nationally syndicated TV documentaries shown recently on cable stations TBS and A&E.

CrüxshadowsA blend of new wave, gothic, pop, rock, and electronica, the band’s unique and often catchy songs have become staples of the dark wave, ebm, and electro-alternative scene. One of the most popular dark-wave bands internationally, the Crüxshadows started in the early 1990’s in a little town in North Florida. Over the last fifteen years their success among the gothic, ebm, new wave, and dark electronic genres has earned them a near legendary underground status. The band’s dark electronic rock and introspective lyrics quickly earned them a fan base beyond the United States, particularly in Europe. With a constant and ambitious release schedule, and a dizzying live performance itinerary, they have turned conventional wisdom on its ear and maintained their position among the scenes elite from each year to the next.

emerald RoseEmerald Rose is one of the top Celtic folk-rock bands in the Southeast US. A rich “world fusion” sound with influences ranging from the Chieftains to Jethro Tull has given this band a thirteen year career and national following. The band’s original lyrics address everything from Celtic myth to modern science, often with a touch of humor as noted in their release Con Suite. Blending vocal harmonies, pennywhistle and world percussion with driving guitars and bass, their sound

is “rock-n-reel” but not ear-splitting. Emerald Rose music has been included in two soundtracks, Ringers (about Lord of the Rings fans) and Done the Impossible, about the Firefly/Serenity series.

Faith and the MuseAmidst a diverse musical background ranging from dark alternative rock and electronica to world music and neo-classical, to jazz, avant-garde and folk, Faith and the Muse provide one of the rarest experiences in art, theater and music. From personal acoustic pieces and traditional/tribal folk melodies to grand orchestral production and dark rock epics, this diverse combination of simplicity and complexity places Faith and the Muse in their own musical category. As we question all that goes on around us, the media-projected problems in the world and down the street, we

need to quiet our mind and spirit enough to pursue our individual purpose. Faith and the Muse’s purpose is clear. While sequestering us inside the mythical and mystical environment of their otherworldly music, they bring to light the real elements that are true within all of us: a quiet and perfect human connection that has guided our hearts throughout history, yet in this world, is commonly lost.

pandora CelticaPandora Celtica is a five piece vocal quintet offering soulful Celtic harmonies in rich layering. These talented singers pride themselves on their songs of ship wrecks and troubled times found in the mists of Celtic history. With a Renaissance feel, the singers will have you swigging your pints and thinking back into the stormy past of Celtic prehistory! Don’t hope for cheery songs from this lot, but if you thrive on mayhem, death and plunder, then they are your crew.

tom SmithThe only recording artist to appear on both NPR’s Sound and Spirit and The Dr. Demento Show, Tom Smith has more than a dozen albums, thirteen Pegasus Awards, a spot in the Filk Hall of Fame, and fans around the world. His concerts combine high-energy folk rock, SF/fantasy, popular culture, Life with Computers, progressive politics, cartoon voices, web comics, Lovecraftian mythos, stuffed animals, unbelievably bad puns, and the occasional recipe into a show you will never forget.

Spider LiliesSpider Lilies is a musical project created by Stacey Campbell, former guitarist/backup vocalist of the Crüxshadows. The first Spider Lilies song, Sand, produced by Rogue of the Crüxshadows, was published online in 1999. Spider Lilies’ music is a blend of rock, dark wave, and Goth, featuring female vocals, guitar, with electronic beats and samples.

VoltaireAs a musician, he is a songwriter whose music can best be described as a collection of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre, with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star Wars to keep a con audience rolling in the aisles. Many know him for his song Brains! from the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy. Voltaire’s live shows, whether solo or with his skeletal orchestra, are highly theatrical—full of stories and games. The theatrical quality of his performances is not surprising; Voltaire has been directing commercials and animating short films for the last twenty years. Spider Lilies

Filk Filk singing began life as a typographic error of “Folk Singing” in a convention program book back in the early 1960’s. Instead of correcting the mistake, a new form of music called “FILK” was created.

Filk songs come in several varieties - parodies of popular songs with an SF theme (or fantasy or horror, etc.), original music with fantasy and/or sci-fi themes, and songs about any aspect of fandom.

This year’s FiLK track will have concerts Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Open filking every night. Workshops, panels, performances in the FiLK track room, and moderated discussions. Confirmed FiLK performers include Tom Smith and The Bedlam Bards!

Writer’s trackIt was a dark and stormy night . Many writers were gathered in the dungeon called Manilla/Singapore. Many faced one direction, a Few glared back from the other. Suddenly, one in the middle spoke, asked a question of the Few.

Others behind the table spoke in turn, sometimes enthusiastically, interrupting each other. Wisdom passed from the Few to the Many…A storm rumbled overhead, but the writers paid little heed, for the discussion riveted their attention to the front of the room.

Suddenly, there was enlightenment. One of the Many rose and querried...One among the Few answered. Then another. And another. More wisdom transferred from the Few to the Many... And, thus, Writer’s Track sustained the Many thirsting after knowledge. And, it was good.

The Writer’s Track is the place to be if your ambition is to become a published writer in any genre. We take on all comers…comics, gamers, novelists, screenwriters…and more.

Paranormal topics remain one of our attendee favorites and we will be hosting panels on Hypnosis, Parapsychology, and Paranormal Research, to name a few. Scheduling is not done yet and XTrack staff look forward to seeing you at Con, with a few surprises and things that go bump in the night!

Young adult LiteratureThe YA Lit Track will be hosting our first Twilight guests as Michael Welch (Mike Newton), Justin Chon (Eric Yorkie), and Peter Facinelli (Carlisle Cullen) join us to kick off the 2009 convention. To keep rolling with the Twilight fun, we’re hosting a Twilight Vidding contest! We are far from being about any one book or fandom, however. We have some special Harry Potter programming and surprises in store for you. We’ll have some new things for you, like Harry Potter team trivia, Harry Potter late night games, hosted by members of Atlanta HP. And we’ll be dancing the night away at the Yule Ball and awarding prizes for the Costume Contest. Come join us with your recommendations for this and our other book discussions, including minorities in YA Lit, women warriors, Harry Potter, vampires and werewolves, and sci-fi in YA Lit.

Can’t wait till con to talk about it? Our track website is at yalit.dragoncon.org.

anime Music VideosWhat is an Anime Music Video contest? An Anime Music Video contest is a place where anime fans and video editors can use their imagination and talents to create spectacular blends of music timed perfectly with animation sequences from their favorite anime. For full contest rules, visit us at www.dragonconamv.com today!

art Show awardsThe Art Show jury determines most of our awards but convention attendees will vote on a portion of the art awards referred to as the Special Awards which include: Best Alien, Best Amazon, Best Dragon, Best Horror, Best Spaceship or Space Scene, Best Warrior, and Most Humorous. Juried award categories will include but are not limited to Best in Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, Best 2-D, Best 3-D, Best Photography and Best Mixed Media. There are also 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for student entrees (if applicable). Art Awards will be presented on Saturday of the convention. Votes cast by attending Artists determine the Artist Choice Award winner.

Comic Book Quick SketchSo, you think you can draw? Think you can draw quickly? The Comic Book Quick Sketch is open to all con attendees. Check your program book or check in at the Contest Registration table in front of Centennial Ballroom in the Hyatt for more information about time and locale. It is usually in the Learning Center of the Hyatt on Monday morning, but please verify in your program book.

Winners will receive a plaque proclaiming them as the winner in their category and while the contestants are doodling, drawing, lettering, and creating, our guest artist(s) will be doing the same - and the original signed artwork becomes prizes for the winners!

Cosplay ContestShort for “costume play”, Cosplay is a subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, Japanese pop music bands, and Visual Kei. Dragon*Con loves cosplay! And to prove it, we’re putting together another fantastic Cosplay Contest!

The Anime and Animation tracks are proud to bring back the Cosplay Contest! The Cosplay Contest location and time will be listed at the convention in the pocket program, and please be sure to come by Pre-Judging if you wish to enter the contest! Pre-Judging will be held in the Anime Programming room prior to the contest: you’ll parade your costume in front of our panel of judges and they will rank the winners. Contestants are judged on their costume only, no skits will be allowed. All entrants will then

get a chance to show off their handiwork at the Cosplay Contest on the stage! Contest forms will be available on-site at Pre-Judging only.

NOte: Dragon*Con hosts a plethora of costume contests. We ask that only costumers with animation, Japanese anime, or video game costumes enter the cosplay contest.!

dawn Look-alike ContestGrand Prize: $1,000 Prize

Joseph Michael Linsner’s Dawn is one of the hottest characters in comics, so in 1998 we hosted the first-ever Dawn Look-Alike Contest, with a $1,000 cash First Prize. If you’re a fan of beautiful women, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. The contest is fully authorized by Joseph (who’ll be on hand for the contest), and Dawn’s publisher, Sirius Comics.

Great news for contestants: though Dawn is usually depicted with red hair, she has occasionally appeared on various covers as everything from blonde to brunette! Contestants will be judged based on how well they capture the image and spirit of Dawn—confident yet mysterious, and sexy without being sexist.

dragon*Con after darkOur rapidly growing Dragon after Dark contest on Saturday, spotlights macabre and mature-themed costumes. We see them in the hallways and at the bar, but this provides a chance to display them in a venue that does not compete with the noise or interruptions of the typical social setting! Once they are finalized, contest rules and entry forms will be available at www.dragoncon.org, so check back soon if you want to participate!

Friday Night Costuming ContestThis costume contest focuses solely on Costuming and will be held Friday night. Judges will be looking at the costume itself, the workmanship, design, and inspiration. This will be open to groups and individuals, experts and novices, and costumes from mainstream or self-creative. Although there will be one “celebrity” judge, the panel will mostly be people with extreme costume backgrounds.

Hallway Costume ContestContest staff will be roaming the halls of all venues with digital cameras, taking pictures of those folks who are too shy to get up on stage in the Masquerade, but who have great costumes. We will also take pictures at the Contest Registration table in front of the Centennial Ballroom in the Hyatt. You may purchase a copy of your official entry picture for $10–with the proceeds going to the Dragon*Con charity of the year.

Robot BattlestM

Robot BattlesTM is the second-oldest robotic combat competition in the world, and is a direct descendant of the oldest-the Critter Crunch. We don’t have a TV show, we don’t have supermodels, and we don’t have huge cash prizes. What we do have is a radio disc jockey with very poor taste in costumes, the most involved audiences in the country, the most imaginative builders around, and the most unique stage hazards in the sport, ranging from rubber snakes to stuffed animals to soft spongy rubber ducks.

For the nineteenth year in a row, Robot BattlesTM will be returning to Atlanta for the largest competition of the year. This is the one robotic event you do NOT want to miss!

8th annual dragon*Con paradeYou know Dragon*Con is in full swing when downtown Atlanta is officially invaded by aliens, princesses, wizards, and warriors! Our annual parade signals loud and clear we have laid claim to the city. In 2008, over 2000 costumed Dragon*Con members and their themed vehicles took over Peachtree Street on Saturday morning, amazing and delighting thousands of onlookers. This year’s parade promises to be bigger and better yet!

Interested? Parade participation is open to all Dragon*Con members and signing up to march is quick and easy. To find out more, contact us at [email protected] or join our Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dc_parade/.

art Show & print ShopAt the convention we will have over 150 artists and 5,000 pieces of original art and prints. Our Show includes the Artist Bazaar (where you will find 50+ attending Artists who will be selling and may even personalize many art items for you), the Art Gallery (where we have both 2D and 3D original artwork priced for all budgets), the Art-on-Demand section (which allows you to have art the way you want it), the Doll section (which has unique, one of a kind dolls), and the Print Shop (where we have prints priced for all budgets).

We are planning many exciting events for the 2009 Dragon*Con Art Show including the annual Iron Artist competition, a large canvas on which all the attending Artists can draw or paint (which will be sold at the Art Show voice auction), live music, demonstrations, and other wonderful events. We will be hosting our annual Artists’ Reception on Friday night of the convention. There will also be booths for local colleges with Art programs.

autograph SessionsEach year, Dragon*Con assembles many of its willing guests for scheduled autographs (signings)

in one area. Not every guest is willing—or able—to sign items, but we do inquire as to each guest’s willingness to do so.

Some guests-usually screen stars-charge for autographs, but autographs staged in our Autograph Area are always free. Limitations on number and type of items may be made, generally at the request of the signer, and sometimes due to time considerations.

Autographs will be handled on a first-come, first-signed basis. We will promote equal access for handicapped persons but this does not exclude them from the first-come, first-served rule; as with other convention attendees they will get their autograph in order of their arrival.

Blood driveRobert A. Heinlein, the man who started the tradition of science fiction convention blood drives at MidAmericon back in 1976, believed very strongly in blood donation and in giving to the community in general, in his words, “paying it forward.” In addition to a lifetime of writing, this is part of the marvelous legacy he left us.

The success of this drive is a reflection of the wonderful generosity of the Dragon*Con community and a fitting tribute to the man who gave so much of himself to his sci-fi family.

Our goal for this year’s drive is 1200 units! Please help us to continue Robert Heinlein’s legacy.

Charity auctionImagine visiting your mother on Christmas day and her not knowing who you are. How about watching your grandfather, who was once a master violinist, just sit and stare at his violin unable to even figure out what it is. Or an uncle, who holds 3 electronic patents, lying in bed in a fetal position unaware of the world around him. For millions of Americans, they don’t have to imagine it... it’s real life.

Dragon*Con is proud to announce that this year’s charity auction will benefit the Georgia Chapter of the American Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and fatal brain disease. As many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

For more information on this devastating disease please visit http://www.alz.org/georgia/. If you would like to donate to this year’s auction, please contact John Tackett at [email protected].

Comic artists ReceptionMark your calendars for the Dragon*Con Comics and Pop Art Reception, taking place Friday evening, September 4, beginning at 8:30 PM in the Regency Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency.

Running simultaneously will be the Dragon*Con Comics Sketch Jam, to benefit Hero Initiative. Many of the industry’s top illustrators will be on hand to sketch for fans and raise funds and awareness for this vital organization.

dragon*Con CaberetWillkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome to the 2nd Annual Dragon*Con Cabaret. Guest of Honor BanquetJoin many of Dragon*Con’s Guests of Honor for an evening of fine food and entertainment. Banquet tickets may be reserved through our office. Please note that seating is limited and tickets will be available at the convention only while they last.

The 2009 Dragon*Con Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Regency VI-VII Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Tickets are $50.00 and may be purchased by calling the Dragon*Con office, mailing in the registration form, or ordering online through our store.

23rd Independent Film FestivalThe Dragon*Con Independent Film Festival is a four day event of film screenings and panels, with directors, producers, writers, actors, SFX and makeup artists all sharing their expertise. The

Festival competition is for short films (under 60 minutes). A few independent features will be shown (out of competition) in the evenings.

We focus each year on showcasing the finest independent short films of the fantastic. We welcome not only Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror films, but any film of the imagination that steps out of the slice-of-life category. This includes Mysteries, Thrillers, Film Noirs, Comedies, GBLT, Slip Stream/Magical Realism, Surrealistic films, and most dramas, just to name a few, as well as short animated films of all types. We take narrative shorts as well as documentaries. Films are screening in themed blocks which have included cyberpunk, gay lifestyle, and Asian-influenced in the past. Films will be judged in specific categories, and awards will be presented on Monday at 1:00 PM.

Late-Night entertainmentWe’ll again offer late-night DJ’d dances Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, beginning after the last concert’s over in the ballroom and lasting until dawn, so you vampires can dance until the sun comes up!

Traditional Sci-Fi convention filk-singing will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, late-night. Filking will begin at midnight and will also continue to the light of day.

For the last few years, we’ve also had an impromptu drum-circle form up for several hours. In 2000 the drum-circle was made a formal part of the schedule for Friday through Sunday night. This tradition will continue in 2009, so bring your doumbek or djembe (or your congas or your violin or your flute...) if you’ve got one.

Music, mayhem, along with the usual audiovisual assault on your peace of mind. Surprises, prizes and more. It’s all Saturday night just at Dragon*Con.

Reading SessionsOffering readings by authors from their own works (and usually some discussion with the audience afterward), our past readers have included T.W. Miller, Janny Wurtz, Kevin J. Video & Film RoomsDragon*Con will feature two video rooms: one devoted to mainstream movies and the Video Festival, and the other for Japanese Animation.

Main Video GThe Main Video Room shows some of the latest movies you might have seen, and some you might never have known existed.

Anime Video GDragon*Con’s Anime video room shows the latest animated titles from Japan, and some classics you might have overlooked, available subtitled or dubbed in English.

Walk of FameThis year, the Walk of Fame will be moving to the fabulous Hilton Atlanta hotel in the Grand Ballroom! Our Walk of Fame houses some of the biggest names in multi-media today. In the past we have had such guests as Mythbusters, the Ghost Hunters, George Romero, Lou Gossett, Jr., James and Oliver Phelps, Vic Mignona, and Tippi Hedren! Check the Dragon*Con website (www.dragoncon.org) closer to the show for a complete floor plan of the 2009 Walk of Fame!

Writer’s WorkshopsDragon*Con is proud to bring even more Writer’s Workshops to the 2009 convention!

Basic Writers Workshop GC. Crispin will again be offering her Basic Writers Workshop on September 3-4, 2009. Ms. Crispin’s Basic course provides a full overview of the science fiction and fantasy genre. It gives students insight and information on how to market their fiction in today’s competitive publishing environment. The Basic course also includes, at no extra charge, a personalized manuscript critique by Ms. Crispin.

This course will run for two full days at Dragon*Con, on Thursday (one day before the con “officially” begins) and Friday, September 3-4, 2009. Submission of a manuscript for review by Ms. Crispin is desirable, but not required.

Ms. Crispin will not be offering the Advanced Writers Workshop in 2009, but will instead offer a FREE mini-workshop on “How to Get a Real Literary Agent.”

For more information on the Basic Writers Workshop, including FAQ and syllabus, and her free mini-workshop, visit the web at http://dragoncon.org/writers_workshop.php.

Writer’s Hourly Workshop GNew York Times Bestselling authors Aaron Allston and Michael A. Stackpole combine their talents to provide a dozen hour-long seminars on writing which will help you turn your dreams of being published into reality. With over fifty years of publishing experience between them, and hundreds of publications from bestselling novels to short stories, graphic novels and gaming material, Stackpole and Allston have build long careers through strong storytelling techniques and secrets they will share with you. Fan/Band Concourse tablesThis year, our fan tables and freebie tables will be located in two different hotels, the Hyatt Regency (outside the Grand Hall) and the Sheraton. Tables for Performers and Bands will now be relocated to the Marriott Marquis’s Convention Level.

The acoustic/ambient music stage remains in its traditional location, outside the Hyatt’s Centennial Ballroom and one floor below the lobby.

The Hyatt Concourse GThe area in the Hyatt known as “The Concourse” now consists of the two floors below the hotel’s lobby, through which most traffic to the ballrooms and panel rooms must pass. Quite a few things will be located on these two floors:

The Marriott Concourse Area GThe Marriott Marquis’ capacious, newly-renovated Ballroom Level pre-function area will host all of our band tables and performers’ tables. This hotel has high visibility and traffic flow due to the Marriott’s famed 47-story open atrium lobby, and is also home to Dragon*Con’s two Exhibit Halls and the Dealers Room, making it the mercantile capital of the con.

The Hilton Concourse Area GThere will be a limited number of select skeptics tables available at the Hilton.

The Sheraton Atlanta Area GBrand new in 2009 the Sheraton Atlanta will now house several of our fan tables.

Hospitality Suite/ConSuite“Consuites” are a tradition of sci-fi and fantasy conventions throughout the United States. We’ll provide a lounge stocked with all sorts of complimentary soft drinks, coffee, and munchies for all attendees to enjoy when feeling a bit hungry. We have planned a Consuite with plenty of snacks that will be open twenty-four hours a day throughout the convention (with a few breaks for cleaning purposes).

Information deskThe Information Desk is your one-stop center for getting all your questions answered. We will have an information booth located in each of the four host hotels. Their exact location will be available on the mini maps provided in the Pocket Program at the show. The staff will be able to help you find where everything is located and just about any other question or request you may have. And if they don’t know the answer, they’ll send you directly to the person who does or contact them by radio.

IntroductionFor the 2009 convention, gaming remains in the Atlanta Hilton. Full details with maps will be available in the Pocket Program detailing where each section of gaming will reside.

The Way Things Work-How to Survive the Gaming Experience at Dragon*Con

Here are a few words that will hopefully give the prospective gamer a useful overview of how gaming is run at Dragon*Con. It should prove to answer some of the obvious questions and help both the new and veteran convention gamer as you plan your adventure with us.

Please check our website, www.dragoncon.org, and select the Gaming link for information about pre-registration. The event tickets you buy via the website will be available at Gaming Registration which will be open Thursday evening and at 8:00 AM every morning of the convention.

In order to play in most events you will need an event ticket. Most event tickets cost $3.00, but there are some free demonstration games and a few are more expensive. CCG “sealed deck” and “booster draft” events can cost considerably more but you are also buying product in whatever game you are playing. You can also purchase generic tickets that are usable at any event. If an event is sold out you can show up for that event with a generic ticket and if anyone with a “real” ticket for that event does not show up you will be able to step in. This is particularly true for the larger events where there is more of a chance of a no show or cancellation.

People often ask why Dragon*Con charges for tickets, and there are two major reasons. The first is to fund prizes for the events. We award “Dealer Coins” to the winners of events that can be used as money in the Exhibition Hall in the Marriott. For some of the major events we have plaques and awards made. The second reason is to insure attendance of events. We’ve learned that players are much more likely to show up for a game if they’ve already spent $3.00 on a ticket. When we tried not charging for events and signed up players on registration sheets in the past. However, many players signed up for everything they were remotely interested in and then only played the events they were most interested when the time came. This was unfair to fellow gamers and judges who would never know if all the names on a given registration sheet would show up.

Dragon*Con uses four hour sessions in an effort to maximize the number of games each player can experience during the convention. The four-day period is divided into 14 gaming sessions as follows:

Friday Saturday Sunday Monday time

Session 1 Session 5 Session 9 Session 13 9:00 AM–1:00 PM

Session 2 Session 6 Session 10 Session 14 1:00 PM–5:00 PM

Session 3 Session 7 Session 11 6:00 PM–10:00 PM

Ideally tournament judges will manage their time so that each game is finished with fifteen minutes left in the session allowing everyone time to get to the next game. Large tournaments in some of the gaming areas do not follow this patter, and some games run over one and a half or two sessions which is usually noted in the description area for that event. When you are looking at events in the listings, you will see that events are typically referred to by their session numbers and not the day or time.

NSdMG returns! The fine folks at the NSDMG will return to the convention this year. They will be running different formats of their games and doing some great presentations. Full details can be found at http://www.nsdmg.org.

Board GamesWe will be offering our $5 play all con badge. You can participate in most of the events in the board gaming area for just a single purchase.

Open Gaming GThere will be dedicated open gaming space this year. Whether it is a game you just purchased or an old favorite that you can’t get any one at home to play, bring it to open gaming and you are sure to find fun and challenging opposition.

Settler’s of Catan GThe Catan tournament at Dragon has grown into a whole con affair. Can you take home the coveted Dragon*Con Plaque?

Board Gaming FAQ

What is Board Gaming? 1. At Dragon*Con board gaming is a catch all section including traditional box games as well as non-collectible card games.

does this include games like Monopoly and Clue? 2. Mostly our focus is on old school wargames and the newer German-style games, as these tend to be what our fan base wants to play, but we are open to all types of games providing we can find good, knowledgeable judges.

S3. o these games are complex with lots of rules? Complexity varies from tactical games like Star Fleet Battles (whose rules take up a 4” binder and turns take well over a hour each) to simple card games like Flux (the only rule, “draw one, play one” and usually lasting no more than fifteen minutes a game)

do I need to know how to play before I can join 4. in the fun? No, the judges at Dragon*Con are specifically chosen for their instructional abilities and would be happy to teach you as much of the rules as you need to play in any of the non-tournament games we offer. For tournaments, we do recommend a degree of game knowledge as this allows all participants to have a fun game experience.

tournaments? So are there prizes?5. Most of our tournaments offer prizes ranging from copies of the games to framed certificates to show off to your friends

Sounds fun, where do I sign up?6. Once the gaming registration site is up, you will be able to purchase the $5 board gaming ribbon as well as tickets for limited seating tournaments.

I am interested in judging _____ . 7. Contact us at [email protected] listing the game you wish to run and we will get back in contact with you to discuss.

Gaming panel programmingThis year Dragon*Con will host more than twenty panels on all facets of gaming. There will be a number of panels on LARPs, table top role-playing games, board games and computer gaming. There will be scholarly presentations as well presentations from game companies and gamers themselves designed to entertain you, inform you, introduce you to new games, and enhance your gaming experience. Check out the Pocket Program guide when you arrive at the convention or join us at the Hilton during the convention for more details.

Live action Role-playing Games (LaRps)Live Action Role-Playing Games (LARPs) at Dragon*Con 2009 builds on several consecutive, highly-successful conventions that set new standards for Live Action Role-Playing at Dragon*Con. We continue responding to the input of our attendees by focusing on genres for which there is a strong demand and on production companies that produce the highest quality experience for our attendees.

LARP gaming remains in the Hilton. Because of ongoing construction at various hotels throughout the convention, space assignments have not yet been finalized for the LARP division. Necessarily, the number and types of games run will depend on the space we have to host those games; consequently we are still in the process of finalizing the games that will be approved. The LARP division is also excited that the long anticipated “cat walk” running between the Hilton and the Marriott Marquis has finally been completed and attendees no longer have to try crossing Courtland Street!

As for the games themselves, we anticipate the return of many fan-favorites including Dark ConFrontation, Nightfall’s World of Darkness, and North Georgia Games’ Chaotic Fluidity. Nightfall will also be running a one-shot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer LARP. The Camarilla returns for another sanctioned two-night Requiem and three different, single-session, daytime games. All of those LARPs are above and beyond the host of new LARPs that are under consideration.

As always, space permitting, we expect to have several “display-only” tables for those LARP games that run continually throughout the year. So, if you want to “live the part” or if you just want to find some information on what exactly Live-Action gaming is, join the LARP division for a fun-filled weekend of gaming.

All events and scheduling are tentative until scenario production and staff scheduling are complete. Dragon*Con reserves the right to modify the availability and/or times of the games being run.

NOte: As of press time, the LARP division is still accepting applications to run LARP games at Dragon*Con. If you would like more information on running a LARP, or for general information on LARPs, please contact the LARP Director, Wayne Melnick, at [email protected].

MiniaturesMiniatures gaming at Dragon*Con should have something for everyone. You’ll find many of the most popular titles and genres, from large scale battles to squad level skirmishes, from historical simulations to fantastic clashes between monsters and mages. For those of you looking for something new, don’t despair, we’ll also have a variety of unusual and interesting games being demonstrated. The WizKids envoys will be back, along with many other favorites from years past, and new things to try, so be sure to check the Dragon*Con web page for the latest offerings and news!

Campaign GamingCampaign Gaming at Dragon*Con 2009 will continue with the bonanza of offerings started last year, and adding to that in order to provide something for everyone. This year, Campaign Gaming will be offering six campaigns, ranging from standard D&D to d20 modern/future to non-d20 based systems.

Living Forgotten Realms, WotC’s newest shared world campaign has become the largest RPGA shared world campaign to date. With a wide variety of events being offered all over the world, attendees can be assured of a wide variety of LFR events from which to choose.

Witch Hunter: Dark Providence will make it’s third appearance at Dragon*Con, after a very successful debut and an even more successful 2nd year. Witch Hunter: Dark Providence is based on the latest Paradigm Concepts campaign system, set in a gothic horror version of 1600’s Earth.

Fellowship of the White Star will also be making a third appearance at Dragon*Con. This campaign is set in 1910’s Earth, with a similar gothic feel, based on a variation of the d20 game system.

Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor will be making a return to Dragon*Con, only this year it will be included under the purview of Campaign Gaming. We are expecting an even bigger and better offering from DAB than in year’s past, and that’s saying a lot. As usual, we will have a premiere event or 2, along with an extensive list of previously released events with a judge staff able to run any and all the events as necessary to accommodate each and every player.

Making it’s triumphant return is AEG’s flagship campaign, Heroes of Rokugan, based on the incredibly popular Legend of the Five Rings game system. We hope to have at least one premiere event this year, along with a couple of rerun events.

Also returning for a second year, and looking to be even bigger and better than ever is Paizo’s flagship campaign system, Pathfinder Society. This year marks the release of Paizo’s own rulebook, based on the D&D 3.5 OGL, with some slight enhancements and modifications. Last year, every available slot sold out, and we’re looking to have even more events and slots to offer. Miniatures

A sample of systems we have so far: Stargate, D20 modern, Savage Worlds, Serenity, World of Warcraft and D&D. The Cheese Grinder returns. This year they are shaking things up, changing the format and bringing a new challenge for the players, Team Cheese!

Online Gaming (MMORpGS)For 2009 and beyond we have split Online Gaming to its very own track. The Online Gaming panels and parties will be held at the Sheraton this year.

We will feature panels and presentations for Age of Conan, City of Heroes, EQ, EQ2, EVE, Global Agenda, Guild Wars, DC Universe Online, Second Life, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Agency, oh and World of Warcraft.
