State 1, Columbia 0 (OT) Lions Ready to Begin 2009 Campaign at Duke/Nike Classic Columbia will open the 2009 season this weekend in Durham, N.C., at the Duke/Nike Classic. The Lions will open play on Friday with a match against the host Blue Devils, then will conclude their tournament against N.C. State on Sunday. The University of Denver will also take part in the event. Scouting the Blue Devils Duke played three exhibition matches prior to starting the regular season on Tuesday against James Madison. The Blue Devils went 2-0-1 in their exhibition season, including victories over Georgetown and Greensboro College. Freshman Ryan Finley, who was a member of the U-17 U.S. National Team, had two goals and two assists. Duke boasts the No. 17-ranked recruiting class in the nation, according to College Soccer News, led by Finley and NSCAA National High School Player of the Year Andrew Wenger. Scouting the Wolfpack N.C. State opened its 2009 season with a 3-1 exhibition win over UNC Greensboro, before beginning the regular season against WInthrop at home on Tuesday. The Wolfpack overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit by rallying for three goals in the first 25 minutes of the second stanza. Ronnie Bouemboue, a two- time member of the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament team and a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award nominee, had two of the three tallies. Anderson Begins First Season as Columbia Head Man After two separate stints as an assistant coach at Columbia under Dieter Ficken, Kevin Anderson returned in January as the program’s head coach. Anderson had spent the last three years as the top assistant at Boston College, where he was named one of the nation’s top assistant coaches by College Soccer News. NEWS & NOTES

A five-year veteran of Major League Soccer and former topassistantatBostonCollege,KevinAnderson begins his first season atthehelmoftheColumbiamen’ssoccerprogramin2009.

Anderson joins the Lions after serving as the Eagles assistantcoach for the past three years,

earning accolades as one of the nation’s TopAssistantCoachesbyCollege Soccer Newsineachof the last twoseasons.Last fall, hehelpedguideBostonCollegetoa15-5-1record,theACCregular-season and tournament titles and a berth into theNCAATournament.

“Kevinhasanimpressivecombinationofexperienceandapassion forColumbiawithunrivaled integrityanddedication.HegainedinvaluableexperienceatBoston College, an annual national powerhouse,”DirectorofIntercollegiateAthleticsM.DianneMurphysaid.“Wearedeeplycommittedtobuildingawinningmen’ssoccerprogramhereatColumbia.IknowthatKevinistherightleadertorevitalizetheprogramandtakeColumbiabacktotheupperechelonoftheIvyLeague.”

Anderson is no stranger to Morningside Heights.Immediately after his collegiate soccer career, heservedas theLionsassistantcoach. Afterplayingprofessionally, Anderson returned to Columbia asthe assistant men’s soccer coach and also as theactingheadcoachin2006.

In his two years as assistant coach at Columbia,Andersonwasanintegralpartofnumerousaspectsofthesoccerprogram,includingtheteam’sstrengthand conditioning, day-to-day operations, academicsupport,andbudgeting. Inaddition tohiscoachingduties, Anderson served as an adjunct professor of physicaleducation.

“Iamthrilledtohavethisopportunity.Ilovedmytimeat Columbia. I am excited to lead the resurgenceofaprogramthatIcaredeeplyaboutandthathasunmatchedpotential,”Andersonsaid.“Iaminspiredby the progress of Columbia Athletics over thepast four years and I look forward to making theColumbiamen’ssoccerprogramanintegralpartofthatsuccess.”

Anderson was a highly-decorated high schoolathlete who earned All-America honors and NewYork Player of the Year recognition in his seniorseason. He began his collegiate career at GeorgeMasonUniversity,whereheearnedColonialAthleticAssociation All-Rookie honors as a freshman andAll-CAA first-team accolades as a sophomore. After transferringtoSouthernConnecticutState,Andersoncaptured NSCAA All-America first-team honors while leading the Owls to a national title in his seniorseason (1992).Additionally,heplayed for theU.S.NationalteamattheU-16,U-18andU-20levels.

Heplayedprofessionally for10years(1993-2003),including two years with the Colorado Rapids andthree years with the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major LeagueSoccer.

Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree in liberalstudiesfromSouthernConnecticutStateUniversityin1992.HealsoholdsaUSSFNational“A”CoachingLicense.

Late Score Helps Columbia Get Past Sacred Heart in Exhibition MatchFirst-yearforwardNickScottscoredthegame-winninggoalinthe86thminuteandhelpedtheColumbiamen’ssoccerteamtoa2-1,come-from-behindwinoverSacredHeartinanexhibitionmatchatColumbiaSoccerStadium.Scotttalliedateam-bestfourshotsinthecontest,includingthreeongoal,andalsohadanassistfortheLions.JuniorBayo Adafintalliedtheequalizerinthe17thminute, after the Pioneers had jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 29 seconds into thematch.

Bayo Back For BusinessAfter registering a career high in goals in 2008, junior forward Bayo Adafin returns as the main scoring threat for the Lions this year. Adafin tallied six goalsaseasonago,andestablishedhimselfasoneof themoredangerousattackersintheIvyLeague.TheRochester,Minn.,nativewasnamedtotheAll-IvyLeaguesecondteamin2008andalsoearnednationalhonorsafterscoringahattrickinawinovernationally-rankedUCSantaBarbara.

Alexander the GreatSophomoregoalkeeperAlexanderAurrichio had a busy first year at Columbia. ThestartinggoalkeeperfortheLions’men’ssoccerteamdoubledasapower-hitting threat for the school’s baseball team.Aurrichio played in 29 games,alternating between an outfield spot and designated hitter, and hit .289 while mashingateam-highfourhomeruns.

Lions Take Break From Preseason Camp to Visit CitigroupTheColumbiaUniversitymen’ssoccer team tookabreak from thegrindofpreseason camp on Tuesday to tour the main Manhattan office of Citigroup. TheLionswerehostedbyformermen’ssoccerplayerChrisTotman‘00,whocurrentlyworksincreditsalesforthecompany.

Adafin Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports ScholarMen’ssoccerstandoutBayo AdafinwaschosenasanArthurAsheJr.SportsScholar for 2009. The rising junior was a second-team selection as he led Columbia and ranked fifth in the Ivy League with seven goals. To be considered, a studentofcolormustcompeteinanintercollegiatesport,maintainacumulativegrade-pointaverageofatleast3.2,andbeactiveonhisorhercampusorinthecommunity.

Lions Shine on Summer Soccer CircuitWithafullseasonofcollegesoccerundertheirbelts,fourrisingsophomoresontheColumbiamen’ssoccerteamwereallbusythissummerpreparingfortheLions2009campaign.FrancoisAnderson,mikemazzullo,RonnieShaban,and Jesse Vella had an opportunity to face top-level competition with theirclubteams.AndersonisamemberoftheD.C.UnitedSuper-20Leagueteamthatwent8-0-1 inGroupBof theMid-AtlanticRegionandadvanced to thesemifinals of the Super-20 National Finals. Shaban’s Northern Virginia Royals FCSuper-20squadalsoadvanced to thenational tournament,bywayofa4-1-3recordingroupplay.MazzullohelpedhisYonkersUnitedU-19teamtoitsmostsuccessfulseasonever.TheTornadoesstrungtogetherthreestraightshutoutsenroutetoanEasternNewYorkStateCupchampionship.Thewinwas extra special considering it was the third consecutive season that theTornadoes and New York Cosmos had faced each other in the final. Mazzullo alsoearnedbraggingrightsfortheyearwithhisteammate,Vella,whowasamember of the Cosmos outfit.

Youth is ServedTheColumbiamen’ssoccerteamwillenterthe2009seasonwithanextremelyyounggroup.TheLionsboastninefreshmenandninesophomoresontheirroster.
