A Word from the Executive Director

2009 marked the 15th anniversary of The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Despite the economic hardships felt by so many this year, the foundation was still able to prosper and experience growth as a result of your continued and diverse contributions.

The foundation proudly completed two exciting awareness and educational projects during the year. We produced an early detection video that was distributed nationwide to over 4000 Emergency Departments across the country in order to aid medical professionals to diagnose more aneurysms prior to rupture. We also produced a Public Service Announcement for television and radio to bring more awareness to brain aneurysms, as well as to lead more people to the foundation website as a primary resource for their concerns related to brain aneurysms. It was your support and belief in the mission of the foundation that made these potentially lifesaving projects possible to fulfill.

As important as these projects were, it is still the daily tasks of speaking on the phone and communicating via e-mail with those in some way touched by a brain aneurysm that truly defines what The Brain Aneurysm Foundation is all about. It is a daunting challenge each and every day, as the nation’s only nonprofit organization solely dedicated to providing critical awareness, education, support and research funding to reduce the incidence of brain aneurysm ruptures, to meet the needs of each person we respond to in a variety of capacities. But at the same time, it is this challenge that provides the reward that comes with being able to help someone in need.

With the economic challenges that existed during 2009 and that are looming for the upcoming year, the foundation is even more appreciative of your gifts of time, talent, and money that you have shared with The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. You are a crucial part of the growth and successes attained in bringing the much needed awareness to this terrible medical disease that affects not just an individual, but often times an entire family.

As Executive Director of the Medical Advisory Board, of The Brain Aneurysm Foundation, I am most proud of the continued growth of our research grant program which began in 2007. This past year the foundation awarded $145,000 in research funding. Our research funding plays a vital role in

energizing neuroscience leaders to find better ways to manage aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, vasospasm, and to understand the mechanism for aneurysm growth. By supporting the medical research community, we are supporting a very vital aspect of the mission of the foundation. I would like to thank the families who have been tragically affected by a loved one’s rupture of a brain aneurysm who have given so generously to support the majority of

our research grant program.

Another proud accomplishment in 2009 was the production of a CME accredited DVD, Early Detection of Brain Aneurysms: Life vs Death which is available to the general public, but aimed to educate first responders and primary care providers in the proper diagnosis and treatment of brain aneurysms, which will ultimately save lives. Educational initiatives, such as this directed to the medical community are a very important avenue to pursue for increasing the early detection of brain aneurysms to ensure the best treatment options and outcomes for the patient.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation was very fortunate to have had two new Chairs of Research established in 2009. The Timothy P. Susco Chair of Research. The $20,000 funding of this Chair was raised by a walk and 8K race set up in Tim’s memory by his family in Reston, Virginia. The Anna Orthwein Chair of Research. The $84,000 funding of this Chair was donated by the Wodloe Foundation in Anna’s memory.

In 2009, The Brain Aneurysm Foundation awarded $145,000 in grants to leading researchers at the 3rd Annual Brain Aneurysm Foundation

Research Grant Symposium held September 17th in Chicago, Illinois.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation awards research grants for basic scien-tific research directed at early detection, improved treatment modalities, and technological advances that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients with brain aneurysms.

The 2009 Research Grant Symposium was jointly-sponsored with North-western University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. We were welcomed by Hunt Batjer, MD, FACS, the Michael J. Marchese Professor of Neurosur-gery and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at North-western University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The event was hosted by Robert Rosenwasser, MD, FACS, Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Rosenwasser is the head of the foundation’s Research Grant Committee.

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

EARLY DETECTION VIDEO

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation is pleased to announce the distribution of over 4000 educational DVD’s to ev-

ery Emergency Room Department in the U.S. entitled Early Detection of Brain Aneurysms: Life vs. Death, which focuses on the early detection of the severe brain anomaly that affects an estimated 1 in 50 people in North America. This 20 minute video was designed to educate primary care physi-cians, emergency room physicians and first responders on how to recognize the symptoms related to a brain aneurysm. This video will serve as a resource for all in ultimately helping save lives through the early detection of brain aneurysms.The video was planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for CME (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Vanderbilt School of Medicine and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Van-derbilt School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for CME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. We are thankful to Cindy Snider, the patient in the video, for sharing her story, and her husband Tim, President of Deja View Media, for creating such a wonderful video that was both poignant and educational.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation was pleased to produce and distribute a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for both television and radio that was distributed nationwide and picked up by NBC Universal across all their networks. The announcement featured survivors Charlie Austin, former WBZ

reporter, Peter Gammons, world-renowned baseball writer and announcer, Amanda Kennedy, business entrepreneur and former actress, as well as Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, who lost his sister-in-law to a brain aneurysm. It is hoped that with greater awareness of this terrible disease that more lives will be saved and people will know that the foundation is a resource for more information.

House Resolution 263

We are thankful to Representative Patrick Tiberi of Ohio for introducing House Resolution 263 to the House in an order to establish September as National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. This is a portion of what he wrote in his Dear Colleague letter to gain support for this legislation:

“Brain aneurysms are often referred to as a silent killer because most will show no symptoms over time. Although a number of advancements have been made in recent years regarding the detection of aneurysms, it is estimated that six million people, or one out of fifty people within the United States, develop a brain aneurysm. This resolution is an opportunity for Congress to raise awareness, promote education, and support the various research studies that are currently being conducted around the United States in order to better comprehend the nature of brain aneurysms and how to prevent them. “

Please ask your US Congressman to co-sponsor House Resolution 263.

Neurological/Neurosurgical Conferences

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation attends at least two neuro medical conferences a year to be sure we have a presence with as many medical professionals, both physicians and nurses, who

deal with aneurysm patients at varying levels. We want the medical community to be aware of our resources for their patients and give them the opportunity to serve their patients in the greatest capacity they can.This year we were fortunate to take part in the World Congress of Neurosurgery which was hosted in Boston, MA. Attendance at this conference was a wonderful opportunity for the foundation to increase our presence worldwide.

Support Services

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation developed from a close relationship between patients and healthcare professionals who identified the need for compre-hensive information and support for brain aneurysm patients, their families, and the medical community. The BAF provides educational literature to brain

aneurysm patients, their families, and the medical community in both English and Spanish. In addition, The Brain Aneurysm Foundation eases the diagnosis, procedural and recovery process for survivors and families by providing phone support, email support, support groups, and our website. Support groups offers brain aneurysm survivors and their families the opportunity to share life experiences, work through challenges and find new ways to adapt to changes in their life. Survivors and caregivers have the opportunity to meet other people who are going through the same difficult times as they are. They are no longer alone once they have joined a support group. They share their experiences and some show support to those that are in need. The healing of the spirit is just as important as that of the body.

In 2009, the number of support groups continued to grow nationwide. Support groups now exist in 37 locations.
