Meet the Leadership Team

While Boxley aggregate, block, concrete, and asphalt products

are essential for building infrastructure in our communities

such as roads, businesses, homes and schools, we recognize

that nature is the primary infrastructure that sustains us

all. We accept our civic obligation to conduct our business

in a responsible manner that will protect and preserve the

environment for future generations.

This report is intended to provide you with the results

of the progress we made in 2009 toward making Boxley an

environmentally sustainable company. While we are pleased

with our first year results, this is just the beginning. Our goal

of being an environmentally sustainable company is a long-

term commitment to a continuous improvement process that

achieves results. It’s The Boxley Way.

Meet the Green Team

In 2009, the Boxley Leadership Team adopted the slogan

Greener. Smarter. Better. to emphasize the importance of

incorporating sustainable environmental practices into our

overall operations. In short, it is our business standard.

The Green Team is responsible for helping Boxley become

a leader in resource conservation. This past year, the Green

Team evaluated every facet of our organization to establish best

practices to take advantage of new technology and techniques

that allow us to make environmentally sensitive decisions.

That’s what being Greener. Better. Smarter. is all about.

Page 5: 2009 Boxley Sustainability Reportreclamation process when mining is complete and buffer land is typically used for wildlife habitat. We conduct baseline habitat inventories and create

2009 Boxley Sustainability Report 5

Land ConservationWe typically use less than 50% of the acreage permitted for

Boxley’s nine quarry operations. The land used in the mining

operation undergoes an extensive

reclamation process when mining

is complete and buffer land is

typically used for wildlife habitat.

We conduct baseline habitat

inventories and create conceptual

plans for habitat enhancement.

Two of our latest conservation

projects are:

90-acre conservation easement at the Fieldale Quarry in

Henry County, Va.

135-acre parcel for a recreational site at the future Flat Creek

Quarry in Campbell County, VA.

RecyclingIn 2009, Boxley recycled:

Oil: 9,280 gallons of oil

Absorbent: 6.6 tons

Antifreeze: 355 gallons

Metals: 337,480 lbs.

Aluminum, Paper and Plastic: Recycling program was

initiated in all office locations

Waste ReductionConverted to electronic billing in September of 2009. To date,

4,791 invoices were sent electronically eliminating the use of

paper and envelopes.

Replaced Styrofoam cups with stainless steel travel mugs

for employees and ceramic cups for visitors. At one location

alone, we were utilizing 5,750 Styrofoam cups annually!

Stormwater ManagementAll Boxley locations utilize effective stormwater management

systems to prevent negative impacts to streams and rivers from

untreated stormwater runoff.

Water ConservationBoxley conserves millions of gallons of water annually

companywide by utilizing reclaimed water for dust

suppression, truck wheel washes and rinsing the drums on

concrete trucks.

Habitat ConservationIn 2009, Boxley expanded the

vernal pool program at the

Piney River Quarry as part of

our habitat management and

conservation program. Boxley performed the first known

successful transplant of a vernal pool in Virginia at its Piney

River quarry in 2007. Vernal pools are home to several rare

species, including the fairy shrimp and the big-headed mole

salamander. Mike Hayslett of Sweet Briar College and Tom

Biebighauser, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Forest Service

partnered with Boxley to perform the transplant.

NSSGA Environmental Leadership AwardNational Stone, Sand & Gravel Association presented Boxley’s

Tom Roller with the prestigious Environmental Leadership

Award. This award recognizes an individual in the aggregates

industry who has made superior and substantial contributions

to the company’s or the industry’s, efforts to achieve

environmentally sound operating practices.

VMNH William Barton Rogers Corporate AwardThe Virginia Museum of Natural History presented the

William Barton Rogers Corporate Award for significant

support for the natural sciences. The museum recognized

Boxley’s donation of the first intact stromatolite fossil found

in Virginia and one of the largest in the world. Stromatolites

are among the earliest known life forms, and are important in

helping scientists understand more about environments that

existed in the past.

NSSGA’s Environmental Bronze AwardThe National Stone,

Sand & Gravel

Association presented

the Environmental

Bronze Award to Boxley’s Piney River Quarry for its

sustainable operations and vernal pools transplant program.

After moving into a state-of-the-art, energy efficient

manufacturing facility in 2006, Boxley turned its focus to

innovating products to meet customers’ needs for sustainable

building materials. Boxley focused on three specific areas for

sustainability:

1. Reduce waste materials from the block manufacturing processWaste block is crushed and reused to make new block.

This kept 7,000 tons of waste material out of landfills last

year. This innovative block qualifies for LEED credits.

2. Enhance energy efficiencyUtilize high efficiency kilns that reduce the use of

electricity and natural gas in the block manufacturing

process.

3. Produce and distribute LEED-qualified building materialsSince its inception in 1998, The Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating

System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council

(USGBC), provides a set of standards for environmentally

sustainable construction.

Boxley has become the source for area builders who seek high-

quality, sustainable building products that qualify for LEED

credits. Boxley sells the widest range of LEED-eligible building

products and produces the following ones:

LEED- compliant concrete masonry productThe region’s first LEED concrete masonry block exceeds the

maximum threshold for recycled content, is energy efficient

and has a long building life. The block is recyclable and can be

re-used in other concrete products.

Turf Block PaversThis open cell system allows for permeability in areas that

need a secure drivable surface for temporary or infrequent use.

It meets LEED standards for solar reflectivity and allows for

organic growth through the open cells.

ShoreblockThis line of erosion control mats solidifies earthen surfaces for use

in areas with waterflow issues such as shorelines, riverbanks and

streams. It meets LEED standards for solar reflectivity.

As part of its commitment to implement sustainable business practices, all eight Boxley Concrete Plants throughout Virginia and

West Virginia achieved Green-Star Certification by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) in 2009.

Boxley’s Roanoke plant was the first to achieve Green-

Star status in Virginia and the 11th in the U.S. Boxley’s

Welch plant was the first in

West Virginia and the 56th

in the U.S. Boxley’s Virginia

plants are located in Blue Ridge, Roanoke, Martinsville and

Bluefield and West Virginia plants in Welch, Mt. Hope,

Princeton and Summersville.

NRMCA Green Star CertificationFollowing are just a few of the actions Boxley concrete plants

implemented during the Green Star certification, which

encompasses both machinery and processes.

Reduced waste concrete by 20% by forming concrete

barrier blocks with the waste concrete. This keeps 3,186

tons of waste concrete out of local landfills.

Utilized 100% recycled water for mixer drum rinse

and washout. This saved 6.4 million gallons of water

annually.

Improved site aesthetics through tree plantings

and landscaping.

Additionally, two of our employees, Sam Woolwine

and Tracy Russell achieved the NRMCA Concrete

Sustainability Professional Specialist Certification as a

result of their knowledge of sustainable development

and green building practices.

Educational outreach is a key component of our environmental

commitment. Through our own educational outreach programs,

sponsorships, and partnerships with area universities, museums,

and gem and mineral clubs, people become more aware of the

need to strike a responsible balance between utilizing nature’s

resources while protecting them.

Boxley’s Explore the Earth program introduces kids to the

Earth’s geologic wonders and highlights the importance of

environmental protection and reclamation. Last year, more

than 800 students participated in this program.

In 2009, Boxley became the primary sponsor of the

Schools for Pools program to increase awareness of the

need for wetlands protection, particularly vernal pools, by

connecting with kindergarten through 12th-grade students

and their teachers from four regional school districts in the

Lynchburg-Amherst area.

Boxley has partnered with Virginia Tech to study and

monitor tree growth of 3,642 tubelings and 560 two-inch

caliper trees we planted on 14 acres of forest as part of a

reclamation project at our Fieldale quarry.
