February 14, 2009 2009 Bakeman Division III Owens CC District Wrestling Report

Valentine’s Day Edition

Introduction Welcome back to one of my favorite times of the year, the OHSAA postseason wrestling tournaments. The next few weeks will be filled with happiness and heartache for some wrestlers, parents and coaches. It's a time of year if you sit up in the stands as an impartial observer and see a gamut of emotions on the mat and in th stands. As always I have a just a few more topics to touch on before we get the business of trying to sort out the Division III district tournament at Owens Community College... ---- It's the second of the OHSAA's two-year enrollment count cycle. Enrollments will be updated probably some time in early April. Currently, there are 63 Division III wrestling schools located in the Northwest District assigned to five sectionals. Port Clinton, Lake, Ontario and Edison which all moved down to Division III from Division II during the last count will more than likely stay down in Division III. There could be some newcomers coming down to D-II for the next count though. Eastwood, Wauseon and Upper Sandusky were all within 15 boys of being Division III during the last tally and Oak Harbor and Fostoria could also soon be moving down to D-III. Add in the rumored possibility of Ada adding a team and when the next enrollment figures are released, it could mean big changes here, especially with the possibility of powerful teams like Eastwood and Oak Harbor moving down. Coaches and fans in these parts will all be interested when those new enrollment figures are released by the OHSAA. ----- Last year’s Owens District produced 4 state champs (all from Monroeville) and 16 state placers. That's down considerably from the season before when the district produced 26 state placers. I think the district tournament strength is maybe a little better than last year with the potential to produce a few more state finalists. We'll see the first weekend in March though because the proof is in the performance. As coaches, fans and boosters we should be finding ways to welcome more wrestlers, parents and fans into our inner circle. We should welcome newcomers with open arms. Sometime through the things I see like bad coaching, unhealthly weight loss practices, overzealous parents long, drawn-out and poorly-conducted tournaments I think we drive people away from the sport. Those things need to be eliminated if wrestling is going to thrive and survive in the future. Also developing a good rapport with the members of the local media that cover your school is an added bonus as well. Don't think they are all like me and guys like Chuck Martinez at the Defiance Crescent News, John Fryman at the Bryan Times or Dan Giles at the Sandusky Register. Most sports writers or radio or TV guys don't know anything and couldn't give a hoot about wrestling. It's up to you to develop a good relationship with them that benefits your program as you surely want to get the word out about your program at all levels to draw the interest of potential wrestlers of all ages and their parents. Time to get off my soapbox now. This is the eighth year I have compiled a Bakeman Report and I wrote my report in the days just before area league championships were decided. I relied on word of mouth from coaches throughout the district and results I have piled up this season. One change is that I have posted all of the results from the Northwest District on The Courier’s Northwest Ohio Wrestling Blog at http://thecourier.typepad.com/northwest_district_wrestl/ Of course, the Brakeman Report was a big help and one of the first guidelines I used when identifying who the players might be in specific weight classes. It goes without saying that no one could possibly do a better job of sorting out all three divisions statewide than Brian Brakeman. If you want the best statewide rankings and to understand some of the rich history behind Ohio high school wrestling the Brakeman Report is the document to read. He’s the godfather of Ohio prep wrestling predictions. Also thanks to a former Clyde Flier Courier City Editor Kurt Leonard, another wrestling fan, for proofing this report. I couldn’t compile a 2005 report but in 2003 of the 56 state qualifiers from the Waite District that season 43 of them were among my top four selections.

In 2004, 42 of the state qualifiers from Owens Community College were in my top four. In 2006, I had 42 of 56 state qualifiers among my top four. Most of the others were listed anywhere between fifth and 10th place for the most part. In 2007, 44 of the 56 state qualifiers were listed among the top four of either their weight class or one just above or below. I think the lowest ranked state qualifier I had last season was Cardinal Stritch’s Kyle Gladieux who I had ranked 13th I believe. In this day and age of the Internet you can’t hit the mark everytime. Last year, I was a bit off the mark. As 37 of the 56 state qualifiers were listed in the top four of their respective weight classes. In my defense though, 10 other boys that ended up qualifying for state I had ranked in either the No.5 or No.6 spots. I did completely miss one state qualifier as I didn’t even have Gibsonburg 160-pound state qualifier Bo Faunce in the rankings at all. Other than Faunce, the lowest ranked wrestler that qualified for state in 2008 was Sandusky St. Mary’s Jim Pavia, who I rated 11

th at 112

pounds. This report is made for entertainment only. I do it because I love the sport and want to do my small part to promote the sport and the schools that sponsor the sport here in NW Ohio. Please don’t send any nasty emails if I have your boy ranked 12th. It’s just one man’s uneducated opinion. Rankings are nothing more than a snapshot in time and things can and do change (people get hurt, become ineligible, quit, etc.) Wrestlers decide the outcome on the mat but it sure is fun to speculate. And it gets people talking wrestling and everyone wins in that situation. Once again, no wagering please. And if you enjoy this report and my blog this season, let me know via email or a bag of popcorn at the Owens District. Good luck to all in the post season. Jamie Baker [email protected]

103 Pounds Projected Champion Nick Goebel (Elmwood) Other Contenders 2. David Harrington (Sandusky St. Mary’s) 3. Cam Michel (Edison) 4. Anthony Elchert (Arcadia) 5. Luke Kern (Liberty Center) 6. C.J. Reyes (Delta) 7. Casey Dye (Bucyrus)

8. Greg Willis (Port Clinton) 9. Brandon Fahrer (Evergreen) 10. Joe Brodman (Tiffin Calvert) 11. Alec Durbin (Ashland Crestview) 12. Austin Schaffer (Seneca East) 13. Ben Timmons (Lakota) 14. Dexter Emch (Woodmore) 15. Nick Lang (Northwood) 16. Hayden Schertzer (Carey) 17. Derek Carr (Lake)

Every year that I’ve written this report I have always started with the 103-pound class and dutifully written

each weight class in order up through heavyweight. There is a method to the madness. I figure that 103-pounds is often one of the more difficult weight classes to predict considering many of the

wrestlers are freshmen with not much of a track record. Add in a variance in weights as some 103 pounders may be 10 pounds under the limit and the difficulty in figuring out who some of those marginal wrestlers in the No.10-16 spots may be, it’s always been one of the tougher weight classes for me to figure out. That said, picking this year’s top crop of 103 pounders at the Owens District hasn’t caused me many

sleepless nights. Perfection in Ohio wrestling is rare, especially in this day and age of 40-plus matches per season and

teams traveling to tournaments all over the state to find the best competition possible. Nick Goebel has a perfect season going for Elmwood and he’s my choice to win the 103-pound weight

class. Goebel settled for a fifth place finish at districts last season losing to David Harrington (13-6) in the quarterfinals and falling to Otsego’s Kodie Glosser 4-0 in his go-to state bout. He’s a year older and stronger and he’s a competitor who hates to lose. He went out for cross country for

the first time this fall and finished fifth in the regional race helping the Royals win the Division III regional title and earn a trip to state. In his post-race interview he said he was “Only running to get in shape for wrestling.” He won at Medina, winning a number of heart-stopping tight matches in the process. He dominated 2007

state qualifier Anthony Elchert from Arcadia in the Van Buren finals 14-2. He’s not a lock, with excellent wrestlers like Harrington and Edison’s Cam Michel in the field, but I still like him to win. His competition at the Elmwood Sectional seem to be closely grouped but clearly not on Goebel’s level. I like Port Clinton’s Greg Willis and Evergreen’s Brandon Fahrer to advance to Owens. Willis beat Fahrer

to win at the Cardinal Stritch Invitational. He also took the crown at Fremont’s Mal Mackey Invitational and was third at Bellevue’s Bob Bailey Invite. Fahrer, meanwhile also added a second place finish at Sylvania Southview. Lakota’s Ben Timmons might have the inside track to the last district spot here. He won at Stryker and was fifth at Van Buren. Harrington and Michel are the class of the field at the Plymouth Sectional and both are the primary threats

to knock off Goebel. Both will certainly qualify barring an injury or some other misfortune. Harrington lost by fall to Hunter Stieber in the district final last year and he has been excellent for a Sandusky St. Mary’s team that is in rebuilding mode. He owns a 3-1 win over Michel at the SBC Duals. Michel has won at Edison, Bellevue and Plymouth, beating Elchert by default in the latter tournament. He

also has a history with Goebel as he fell to the Elmwood sophomore in the district fifth place match 5-4 in overtime. There’s a shortage of bodies at Plymouth as I count just six 103 pounders in the entire sectional. Ashland

Crestview’s Alec Durbin is probably next here with Seneca East’s Austin Schaffer, a Van Buren Invite placer, taking the next spot. Neither will likely be a factor at the district level. Elchert, a junior, will lead the way at the Carey Sectional as he will be trying to get back to Columbus after

qualifying in 2008. He’s struggled against the top competitors at this weight, losing big to Goebel at Van Buren and falling twice to Michel, by default at Plymouth and via fall at the Sandusky St. Mary’s Duals. He’s certainly good enough to finish in the top six at Owens if he wrestles well. Bucyrus’ Casey Dye had had a very good season for the Redmen. He was third at the J.C. Gorman Invite

and defaulted to sixth at Marion Pleasant. If healthy, I think he comes out of the No.2 spot here. I’m not really impressed with the rest of the field at the Carey Sectional. Calvert’s Joe Brodman is around .500 against a tough schedule and Carey’s Hayden Schertzer has rolled up an impressive record against a weak schedule. There are a couple of wrestlers I like at the Archbold Sectional. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Liberty Center freshman Luke Kern. He was second at Marion

Pleasant’s Sally George Invite while finishing fourth at the Toledo Waite Invite. I think he’ll come out of the No.1 spot at Archbold and should figure into the top six at Owens. Delta’s C.J. Reyes is probably next best here but he hasn’t beaten the top wrestlers in the district here. He

lost to Elchert (9-6), Michel (12-5) and Harrington (11-0) at the Sandusky St. Mary’s duals. He could be a

wildcard at districts. Honestly, I’m clueless as to the last two qualifiers here, as some 103 pounders seem to be out of the

lineup in recent weeks for some of the teams in this sectional. Ayersville’s Ryan Behringer, Paulding’s Josh Hemker and Styker’s Mason Fox have all shown up in recent weeks and may be the best bets to advance at Archbold.

112 Pounds Projected Champ Jonny Tolson (Delta) Other Contenders 2. Tim Majoy (Edison) 3. Jim Pavia (Sandusky St. Mary’s) 4. Kodie Glosser (Otsego) 5. Lance Johnson (Monroeville) 6. T.J. Weirauch (Archbold) 7. Kyle Parker (Mohawk)

8. Cade Mansfield (Ayersville) 9. Ben Martinez (Liberty Center) 10. Eddie Fredritz (Carey) 11. D.J. Ferguson (Montpelier) 12. Davis Reid (Hicksville) 13. Jacob Haas (McComb) 14. Austin Hilty (Fremont St. Joseph) 15. Dexter Lee (Elmwood) 16. Sebastian Williams (Tiffin Calvert) 17. Caleb Blair (Western Reserve)

To say that the field at Owens will be a bit crowded at 112 pounds would certainly be an understatement. Of course one spot has opened up here as Monroeville state champion Hunter Stieber seems to be

moving up to compete in the 119 pound weight class. That should make some of those wrestlers that were looking at qualifying out of the No.3 or No.4 spot jump for joy. With five wrestlers with previous state tournament experience it looks like the 112-pound weight class will

be one of the deeper and more entertaining weight classes in the district. It’s tough to get a handle on the order of finish here because I think many of the top boys at this weight are

very closely matched. Delta’s Jonny Tolson qualified for state last season as he dropped a 4-0 decision to Monroeville’s Cam

Tessari in the district title match. He won at Perrysburg this season and was fourth at the GMVWA for the Panthers. As a returning district runner-up, he looks as good as anyone to win this weight class, although he did lose

to Majoy by disqualification at the Sandusky St. Mary‘s duals so it’s certainly no sure thing. His toughest competition may come from the Plymouth Sectional with Edison’s Tim Majoy, Sandusky St.

Mary’s Jim Pavia and Monroeville’s Lance Johnson all competing there. I could see Majoy winning this weight. When Monroeville and Edison met in a dual meet, Stieber bumped

up to 119 and the Eagles’ Johnson handed Majoy a 10-9 defeat. Majoy topped Delta’s Jonny Tolson by disqualification when they met at the Sandusky St. Mary’s duals and he stopped Archbold’s T.J. Weirauch, another contender at SMCC 6-3. In the Majoy vs. Pavia match up at the SBC Duals, Majoy came out on top 10-7. Pavia, meanwhile, missed the SMCC Duals and is 16-6 for the Panthers as I compile this weight class. If

he competes, he’ll be a factor at districts but he may have to be at the top of his game to qualify for state again. Not sure who to pencil in for the No.4 spot out of Plymouth. Johnson, meanwhile, is at his optimum weight for the first time since he was a freshman (the pre-Stieber

days). Four years ago as a freshman he was a match away from placing at districts but has always been bumped out of the weight class where he would arguably have the most success. If he wrestles well, he could be a district finalist. As for the No.4 spot here, maybe returning district qualifier Caleb Blair from Western Reserve will qualify

again. There should be some good competition for the district bids up for grabs at the Archbold Sectional. Aside from Tolson, there are also three wrestlers at Archbold with previous district tournament experience

in Hicksville’s Davis Reid, Archbold’s T.J. Weirauch and Montpelier’s D.J. Ferguson. I’d put Weirauch second here. He’s gone toe-to-toe with some of the top wrestlers here and is maybe just

a half a step behind, but certainly capable of pulling the upset. Ferguson is another interesting wrestler. He won a couple of couple of district matches last season at 103

pounds but I haven’t seen his name in the lineup recently. He may have already been surpassed by a couple of other wrestlers in the Defiance area, namely Ayersville’s Cade Mansfield and Liberty Center’s Ben Martinez, both of whom who have beaten Ferguson this season. Martinez was fifth at the Marion Harding Classic and has been hot and cold. He’s beat Ferguson quite

handily in a dual meet but has also lost to Patrick Henry’s Garret Gerschutz, another entry at this sectional. Mansfield, meanwhile, has beaten Reid and Ferguson and took first place at the LCC Invitational. His

stock is rising quickly. It’s likely that one or two district qualifiers here won’t make a return trip. Otsego’s Kodie Glosser will head up the contingent at the Elmwood Sectional. He earned a state bid last

year with a third place finish at 103 and has been tough for the Knights this season at 112 pounds.

He was second at the Wendy’s Tournament at Tiffin Columbian and has a couple of wins over another key competitor here in Elmwood’s Dexter Lee. Evergreen’s Brandon Bettinger is also a returning district qualifier. He won a district match before being eliminated with a 2-1 loss to state qualifier Kyle Parker of Mohawk. Fremont St. Joseph’s Austin Hilty is also a returning district qualifier and he put together a solid tournament at Van Buren wrestling his way to a second place finish. I also like Lee, who is sandwiched in the Elmwood lineup between his big brother Westley and Nick

Goebel. I just have a sneaking suspicion I’m missing someone here who will jump out and grab a district spot. At the Carey Sectional, there’s Mohawk’s Kyle Parker, who’s a returning state qualifier, but I have a feeling

it’s going to be tough to duplicate last year’s success in this difficult weight class. He’s certainly been solid in the move up to 112 pounds, and it should be noted as most coaches know making jump from 103 to 112 isn’t always easy. He was third at Tiffin Columbian and recorded second place finishes at the Marion Pleasant and Perry Pin City tournaments. There are three other returning district qualifiers here in McComb’s Jacob Haas, Carey’s Eddie Fredritz

and Tiffin Calvert’s Sebastian Williams and I would imagine they’ll eat up the rest of the district bids. Fredritz shook off the rust and won the Van Buren Invite with a pin over Hilty in the final. Haas and Williams also placed there, with Haas also taking third at the Sylvania Southview Invitational. I’d be very surprised to see any of this trio on the awards stand at Owens though.

119 Pounds Projected Champion Hunter Stieber (Monroeville) Other Contenders 2. Mitchell Dandurand (Hopewell-Loudon) 3. Alex Glenn (Otsego) 4. Westley Lee (Elmwood) 5. Oliver Stuckey (Archbold) 6. Jacob Fleming (Port Clinton) 7. Chris Delaney (Delta)

8. Cody Laney (Hicksville) won LCC 9. Jordan Cole (Edison) 10. Austen Lulfs (Evergreen) 11. Shawn Gantka (Genoa) 12. Craig Parker (Mohawk) 13. Kyle Stacey/Zac Poignon (Liberty Center) 14. Dylan Moore (Ayersville) 15. Dakota Workman (South Central) 16. Conner Lewis (Arcadia)

At 119 pounds, everything starts with Stieber, who followed up his sensational freshman season with

another terrific campaign for Monroeville. He lost in the finals of the Ironman but has been unstoppable since, winning at Brecksville, Elyria Catholic and Austintown Fitch. Brian Brakeman has picked him to win the state tournament at this weight and I don’t know how anyone

could possibly disagree with his assessment. With Stieber casting a tall shadow on the bracket here, everyone else is essentially shooting for the

remaining three state qualifying spots. I’d give Hopewell-Loudon senior Mitchell Dandurand the leg up to earn his fourth straight trip to Columbus.

Probably one of the more underappreciated wrestlers in the district the past four years, people seem to overlook him each year, but come tournament time, he is good as gold. He’s struggled with injuries at some times in his career but he comes to wrestle at districts. At state it’s

been another matter altogether as he has just a 1-6 record in Columbus. Hopefully, he’ll find a spot on the awards stand this year. Three other wrestlers, all from the Suburban Lakes League, should figure prominently on the district

bracket. Otsego’s Alex Glenn, Elmwood’s Westley Lee and Genoa’s Shawn Gantka will all exit the Elmwood Sectional. Glenn, a state alternate at 112 last season, has been solid. He was second at the Tiffin Columbian

Wendy’s Tournament and has split with Westley Lee, losing 3-2 and winning in overtime. Look for close matches between these two from here on out. Lee has also been quite good, his highlight was a second place finish at Van Buren where he dropped a 6-3 decision to Dandurand in the final. Gantka was a district placer last season losing to Glenn 9-5 in the fifth place match at 112 pounds, but he

hasn’t come close to beating some of the top wrestlers here. He’s lost to Glenn, Lee (16-0) and Edison’s Jordan Cole (13-5). Not sure he can wrestle his way into the top four. Other wrestlers to watch at Elmwood are Evergreen’s Austen Lulfs and Port Clinton‘s Jacob Fleming. Lulfs

was second at Cardinal Stritch recently. He also finished fourth at Sylvania Southview, one spot in front of Gantka. Fleming, a returning district qualifier, has been competing at 125 recently finishing second at Stritch and Fremont Ross. But he was down to 119 for the SBC Duals and he’ll certainly throw a wrench into the works here if he competes at 119. Outside of Stieber, there isn’t much at the Plymouth Sectional. Cole has put together a good year for Edison. He won at Bellevue and was third at Edison. Sandusky St.

Mary’s Logan Reichert, who finished fourth at the Perry Pin City Classic, should also qualify here as well. Not sure who to mention for the final spot here as it appears to be wide open. I’ll throw out someone like

South Central’s Dakota Workman to advance in the No.4 spot. There is a lot of excellent young talent in this weight class at the Archbold Sectional. There are a couple of returnees with previous district experience in Ayersville’s Dylan Moore and Liberty

Center’s Kyle Stacey or Zac Poignon but I’m ranking other wrestlers in the sectional ahead of them. Moore won at Stryker and was second at Woodmore. I’m not sure who will be in the lineup for Liberty

Center as Stacey and Poignon are both returning district qualifiers. Poignon placed at Marion Harding for the Tigers while Stacey was in the lineup for LC at the Marion Pleasant Classic. The three here I really like and I think have a bright future are Archbold’s Oliver Stuckey, Hicksville’s Cody

Laney and Delta’s Chris Delaney. Stuckey lost just once at the Sandusky St. Mary’s Duals. I sometimes have a tough time figuring out where

the Blue Streak wrestlers will end up because of their all-dual meet schedule but I think Stuckey is pretty good and with a hot weekend he could be a factor at the district level. Delaney also had a solid outing at the SMCC Duals. He beat Cole 12-0 but lost to Reichert 5-3. As with all

of Delta’s young wrestlers, I’d imagine he’ll improve even more before the tournaments start. The most intriguing wrestler at this weight is Hicksville’s Cody Laney. The Aces have churned out some

good individuals over the years and they sometimes slip under the radar. He’s beaten a couple of the top kids here and recently grabbed my attention by winning the 35-team LCC Invitational. You don’t win a tournament that size without being pretty darn good. Dandurand leads the way at the Carey Sectional. Riverdale‘s Andrew Yeater has previous district

experience but I‘d certainly rate him behind Mohawk‘s Craig Parker. Parker won at Marion Pleasant, was seventh at Perry and added a fourth place showing at the Tiffin Wendy’s. When in doubt at the Carey Sectional, use the Van Buren Invite as a measuring stick. If I do that, Arcadia’s

Conner Lewis and Van Buren’s James Potteiger seem to pop up as possible district qualifiers.

125 Pounds Projected Champion Logan Stieber (Monroeville) Other Contenders 2. Alex Lopez (Patrick Henry) 3. Derick Johannsen (Port Clinton) 4. Kyle Burns (Edison) 5. Jordan Smith (Delta)

6. Matt Smith (Margaretta) 8. Broc Peterson (Liberty Center) 9. Garrett McGrail (New London) 10. Mitchell Emmitt (Elmwood) 11. Ricky Bacon (Cardinal Stritch) 12. David McDonald (Plymouth) 13. Dylan Meares (McComb) 14. Jacob Gillen (North Baltimore)

This is the second of three straight weight classes dominated by one of the Monroeville boys. Logan Stieber is going for his third straight state title and there’s no one in the Owens District that’s going

to stand in his way. He missed a month or so of the season with a broken hand but he’s seen no ill-effects from the injury. Here’s hoping he stays healthy and has a chance at becoming the NW District’s first four-time state

champion next season. Patrick Henry’s Alex Lopez missed out on a chance for a return trip to state last season when he broke his

ankle late in the year. He’s returned full-force this season for the Patriots and should certainly qualify for state again this season. He bested the field at the Arcadia tournament and also won at LCC with an easy win in the final. He’s good enough to earn a spot on the awards stand in Columbus. As for the other two state bids, the waters become a bit muddier. At Plymouth, aside from Stieber of course, Edison’s Kyle Burns has quietly put together a fine season

winning tourney titles at Bellevue, Plymouth and Edison. He’s a contender for a state berth. There are a couple of other kids at Plymouth with district experience in Margaretta’s Matt Smith and New

London’s Garrett McGrail. Smith has been a solid placer taking fourth at Tiffin Columbian, fifth at Fremont Ross and winning the Cardinal Stritch pool tournament. McGrail was fourth at the J.C. Gorman Invitational and third at Woodmore. If you’re looking for some home cookin’ Plymouth’s David McDonald, a winner at Arcadia and sixth place finisher at LCC is someone else to watch here. The Archbold Sectional shouldn’t be too difficult for Lopez to conquer. Delta’s Jordan Smith, one of three Smiths that could be on the district bracket at this weight, has district

experience. He won a match at Owens at 130 pounds last year, now down to 125, he’ll be a player this season at the district level. Smith pinned Hopewell-Loudon 3-time state qualifier Dandurand at the SMCC Duals but also lost to Burns. Not sure who else to mention, but Liberty Center’s Broc Peterson does come to mind. I have a feeling I’m

really overlooking someone here…maybe it’s someone from Montpelier, who has put together a good season up in the NW corner. At Elmwood, Port Clinton’s Derick Johannsen is a returning state qualifier and he’ll be the favorite here. He

also must be considered a prime contender for a return trip to Columbus with the season he’s had winning at Fremont Ross and Black River while adding a second place effort at Bellevue. He was absent from the PC

lineup at Stritch though. I also like Evergreen’s Jeff Smith, another returning district qualifier. He placed second at Southview and

won at Stritch. Freshman Mitchell Emmitt has performed well for Elmwood this season finishing third at Van Buren. I’d be surprised if he didn’t punch his ticket to districts. Cardinal Stritch’s Ricky Bacon, the Northwood Invite champ, will also be a factor in this weight class. What can I say about the Carey Sectional? Well, speaking frankly, it’s rather devoid of talent at this weight

class. I’m having trouble finding wrestlers with winning records at this weight class. McComb’s Dylan Meares and returning North Baltimore district qualifier Jacob Gillen may be the best of

the group of 125s here. Meares beat Gillen 16-12 in the consolation semis at Van Buren. This is the sectional you’ll want to draw into if you’re a 125-pounder at Owens.

130 Pounds Projected Champion Cam Tessari (Monroeville) Other Contenders 2. Joey Bodenbender (Tinora) 3. Jordan Cowell (Archbold) 4. Stephen Pastor (Port Clinton) 5. Nic Hernandez (Elmwood) 6. Tyler Crapo (Seneca East) 7. David Siesel (Margaretta) 8. Cody Lamberson (Montpelier)

9. Tyler Majoy (Edison) 10. Eric Gase (Tiffin Calvert) 11. Tyler Rohrs (Paulding) 12. Tim Grys (Western Reserve) 13. Taylor Amburgy New London) 14. Joey Adams (Hicksville) 15. Damen Escobedo (Gibsonburg) 16. Lance Mendoza (Northwood) 17. Brandon Montgomery (McComb) 18. Tommy Bowman (Riverdale) 19. Kyle Beall (Van Buren)

At 130 pounds we have No.3 of Monroeville’s aptly named “Fab Four” as the Eagles’ Cam Tessari will be

looking to win his second straight state title this season. He’s certainly stepped out of the shadows of the Stieber brothers and into the spotlight himself with his performance over the past three years. Tessari was fourth at the Ironman and won at Brecksville. He also won with ease at Austintown Fitch and Elyria Catholic. He is perhaps the last slam-dunk projected district champion until we get to his teammate Chris Phillips at

171 pounds. That’s one state spot accounted for and there are really no clear-cut candidates for the other three state

bids up for grabs at Owens in this weight class so we’ll just take a look at the other possible contenders here by sectional site. Of course, Tessari is coming out of the Plymouth Sectional and it’s going to be a really crowded field here.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or more 130 pounders here move up to 135 to enhance their chances of moving on to the district level. There are no less than four returning district qualifiers at this weight class not including Tessari. I think the rest of the wrestlers here are at about the same level so it should certainly make for some

interesting competition. Seneca East’s Tyler Crapo was second at Van Buren and topped the 130-pound field at the Plymouth

Invitational. New London’s Taylor Amburgy, a district qualifier last year at 119 pounds, was second at Woodmore and

fourth at Elyria Catholic. He lost to Crapo 4-3 in a dual meet matchup. Margaretta’s David Siesel, a district qualifier at 125 in 2008, was third at Fremont Ross and fourth at

Cardinal Stritch. There’s also Western Reserve’s Tim Grys. He’s interesting because he won at Clyde and was second at

Tiffin Columbian’s Wendy’s Tournament and also the Edison Invite. Impressive finishes to be sure, but he’s lost a lot of matches to other wrestlers listed here like Crapo (8-3), Archbold’s Cowell (pinned in 3:53), Tinora’s Joey Bodenbender (6-4) and Paulding’s Tyler Rohrs (12-8). He also lost a 21-10 major decision to Edison’s Tyler Majoy. Take these four, along with Majoy, throw them into a hat and pick them out as the three district qualifiers

from this season. And actually, the district field may be so unremarkable that one of them could grab a state spot if they have a good weekend at Owens. It’s tough to order the contenders at the Archbold Sectional. Tinora’s Joey Bodenbender won a district match last season. He was also the champion at the Perrysburg

Invitational this season. After Tessari, he may be the second best wrestler at Owens judging on his success against some of the other kids here. But that’s no sure bet. Archbold’s Jordan Cowell went unbeaten at the Hopewell-Loudon Duals in December and had a good

weekend at the SMCC Duals. He may not be a threat to Tessari but he may be a key player at the district level. Montpelier’s Cody Lamberson had a decent run at the SMCC Duals for Montpelier. He won at Stryker and

was second at Arcadia for what it's worth. Hicksville’s Joey Adams is returning district qualifier here but he may have fallen behind the top few kids at this weight class including Paulding’s Tyler Rohrs. I’m thinking

Cowell and Bodenbender are the ones who may have the best shot of punching their tickets to Columbus. At Elmwood, Elmwood’s Nic Hernandez and Northwood’s Lance Mendoza will be seeking return trips to

Owens, although I’m not sure either will be able to muscle their way into the top four at districts. Hernandez was fifth at Van Buren and that doesn’t inspire all that much confidence. Mendoza finished fourth at Woodmore and Sylvania Southview and I want to say fifth at Fremont Ross. Those are solid low placements that make me think he’ll return to Owens. Two other wrestlers with shots at sectional crowns here are Port Clinton’s Stephen Pastor and

Gibsonburg’s Damen Escobedo. Pastor won the individual title at Stritch beating Escobedo in the finals. He was third at Fremont Ross and

Bellevue and fourth for the Redskins at Avon Lake. Good results against some bigger schools. Escobedo went unbeaten at the Hopewell-Loudon duals and won a title at Woodmore. Another to watch

here might be Evergreen’s Cory Rade. The 130-pound division at Carey isn’t very strong and I’d imagine none of the competitors here will play

much of a role at Owens the following week. Calvert’s Eric Gase is a returning district competitor. He was fifth at the Gorman beating fellow sectional

foe Chase Piatt from Bucyrus by fall in the finals. He also added a fourth at Bellevue and should be tournament-ready with the tough schedule the Senecas have faced this season. Piatt was fifth at Marion Pleasant, that result alone makes me think he’ll end up in the top four here. Believe it or not McComb’s Brandon Montgomery was the lone wrestler here who placed at the Van Buren

Invitational, which is shocking considering nearly all the Carey Sectional teams go to the VBI. As for the final spot, let’s list Tommy Bowman, a freshman from Riverdale, and Van Buren’s Kyle Beall, who recently won a title at the Carey Classic and appears to be coming on strong.

135 Pounds Projected Champion Payton Oney (South Central) Other Contenders 2. Ben Kuzma (Hopewell-Loudon) 3. Chris Rentschler (Liberty Center) 4. Bryce Hussey (Ayersville) 5. Sam Heilman (Evergreen) 6. Scott Traver (Genoa)

7. Trevor Meyer (Archbold) 8. Cal Clark (Monroeville) 9. Reid Rayfield (Delta) 10. Myles Rinehart (Plymouth) 11. Nick Espinoza (Lake) 12. Todd Box (Otsego) 13. Nick Kreischer (Edison) 14. Jake Hedrick (Ashland Crestview) 15. Josh Beekman (Margaretta)

A weight class without a boy from Monroeville at the top but I’m confident of my selection nonetheless here

at 135 pounds. It is another Plymouth Sectional and Firelands Conference performer here as Payton Oney has been

sensational this season for South Central. I know hopes were high for a solid team season at South Central but kids dropped by the wayside as the season went on, leaving the Trojans with six very good wrestlers this year. Oney, a two-time state qualifier and sixth place finisher in Columbus last season. He’s won at Willard,

Plymouth, Black River and Clyde and he’s not likely to be tested until maybe the finals at Owens. Hopewell-Loudon’s Ben Kuzma also dropped to 135 for the SMCC Duals and if he competes here I like

him to possibly make the finals, assuming he’s paired away from Oney. He won at Van Buren pretty easily and was second at Tiffin Columbian, falling to Fremont’s Yohe Rojas in the final. Sometimes he has a tendency to get a little lackadaisical and take some time off during a match, something he can ill-afford to do at districts and state. Liberty Center’s Chris Rentschler is also a returning state qualifier after finishing fourth at districts at 135

pounds last season. He has been solid but not overpowering, finishing fifth at Toledo Waite, third at Marion Harding and going unbeaten at the Springfield Duals the first weekend of the season. I’d label him as a prohibitive favorite to qualify in either the No.2, No.3 or No.4 spots. Genoa’s Scott Traver qualified for state in 2007 at 103 pounds but I’m not exactly sure where he’ll fit into

the mix here. He was fifth at Sylvania Southview and fourth at Waite finishing ahead of Rentschler, although they never met there. Looking at the other contenders… While Oney leads the way at Plymouth, there are several other contenders I do like. Two boys from the Firelands Conference, Monroeville’s Cal Clark and Plymouth’s Myles Rinehart are both

returning district qualifiers here. While Clark hasn’t placed at any of the big tournaments like his teammates, he did score a victory at the Elyria Catholic Tournament with a very good effort. Rinehart is good too, winning at Arcadia and finishing second at Plymouth. As for the No.4 spot here, Margaretta’s Josh Beekman and Edison’s Corey Mancuso have placed in a few

events for their respective teams. I’ll also throw Ashland Crestview’s Jake Hedrick out there as a possible district qualifier.

Rentschler appears to be the favorite at the Archbold Sectional, although those boys from the NWOAL know each other so well, once you think you have them figured out you realize you really don’t. Archbold’s Trevor Meyer, Delta’s Reid Rayfield and Montpelier’s Nick Kreischer have all competed at 135

at one time or another this year and all are returning district qualifiers. Add in another in Ayersville’s Bryce Hussey and the competition should be quite spirited at this weight class. In fact, as it turned out, Rentschler, Hussey, Meyer and Rayfield were all paired in the same quarter

bracket in the consolation bracket at districts last season. Rentschler ended up beating Meyer in the placement round before going on to clinch a state berth with a

2-0 win over Hopewell-Loudon’s Miles Chapman in the consolation semifinals. Meyer won a couple of district matches last year. He has been good for the Blue Streaks but not

spectacular. Rayfield was fifth at the GMVWA and fourth at Perrysburg, two pretty good tournaments. Kreischer, meanwhile, I think trails the other three NWOAL boys here as he struggled at the SMCC Duals. They’ll sort themselves out at the NWOAL tournament. Hussey won weak tournaments at Stryker and Woodmore but was second in a big tournament at Lima

Central Catholic, losing to a good wrestler in Bluffton’s Kyle Begg, 10-9, in the finals. He’ll factor somewhere in here and earn a spot at Owens. There are four returning district qualifiers back at the Elmwood Sectional. As mentioned, there’s Traver.

But Evergreen’s Sam Heilman, and Lake’s Nick Espinoza are also good. Otsego’s Todd Box also advanced to Owens last season. Heilman was fourth at Southview and third at Stritch and beat Meyer 9-3 in a dual meet. I do sometimes

have trouble getting a good handle on where I should rank the Evergreen kids sometimes. Espinoza was unbeaten at the Hopewell-Loudon Duals, won at Northwood and finished second to Hussey at Woodmore. Box’s status is more tenuous. He might be the fourth best here with Elmwood’s Bonham right on his heels. Other than Kuzma, I don’t think any of the wrestlers at the Carey Sectional can place higher than maybe a

fifth or sixth at districts and that’s with a good draw and plenty of luck. Chris Osborne has been up and down for McComb this season, but he did take third at Southview and

third at Van Buren. I like his chances to advance. Mohawk’s Devin Cartwright, another district qualifier, was fourth at Tiffin Columbian and eighth at Perry. The Warriors have a very small team of 6 or 7 wrestlers this season, quite unusual for a team that was a district-wide power just a few short years ago. As for the final district spot, I’d give the edge to Van Buren’s Joe Szczublewski, one of my junior high

wrestlers at St. Wendelin the final year I coached there.

140 Pounds Projected Champion Chad Sonnenberg (Van Buren) Other Contenders 2. Josh Goebel (Edgerton) 3. Josh Reindel (Cardinal Stritch) 4. Troy Espinoza (Genoa) 5. Cody Alexander (Elmwood) 6. Josh Ackerman (Margaretta) 7. Max Pennington (Delta)

8. Zach Bryson (Ontario) 9. Kyle Johnson (Swanton) 10. Mitch Bloom (Mohawk) 11. Cody DeLaCerda (McComb) 12. Alex Hesson (Liberty Center) 13. Tyler Matter (Edison) 14. Jaren Wickham (Hopewell-Loudon) 15. Swayzee Hood (Buckeye Central) 16. Seth Collum (Gibsonburg)

Three wrestlers with previous state tournament experience and another, who was a state alternate as a

freshman, last season highlight the 140-pound weight class at Owens. It’s certainly not the deepest class at Owens and it doesn’t have the star power of some of the other

weights where you know the district champion will have a legitimate shot at a championship the following week in Columbus. I’ll pick Van Buren’s Chad Sonnenberg to win the title here. As a freshman he fell just short of qualifying

when he dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Edgerton’s Jordan Karnes in the consolation semifinals. If he wrestles to his potential, he shouldn’t have a problem advancing this season. He’s lost just twice in the finals at Van Buren and Tiffin Columbian, the only matches this season where

he’s given up an offensive point. He won at Carey and Arcadia and owns a 3-1 decision against Cardinal Stritch returning two-time state qualifier Josh Reindel in a dual meet. He’s certainly more than capable of winning this weight class and I’d very surprised if he didn’t qualify for

the Black Knights. Reindel, Edgerton’s Josh Goebel and Elmwood’s Cody Alexander also all have previous experience in

Columbus. Reindel won the CIT and at Northwood, he finished third at Oak Harbor and was the MVW at the Stritch

Invitational as he won the tournament for the fourth time in his career. He was a district runner-up last season and he probably has a better chance than anyone else at the rest of this weight class to make the district finals.

Goebel, qualified for state with a third place district finish at 140 last season, he’s equal to any of the boys here. He won the big tourney at LCC and was unbeaten at Archbold’s Chuck Forward Duals. By comparison, he knocked off Bluffton’s Lucas Freeman to win at LCC one week after Sonnenberg lost to Freeman in the Van Buren final. I think he’s solid to qualify. Looking at the section breakdown at 140, the competition should be relatively fierce at the Elmwood

Sectional. There’s Reindel and then Genoa’s Troy Espinoza, who stopped Elmwood 2007 state qualifier Cody

Alexander 12-3 at the SLL Duals. Espinoza has been solid winning at Northwood and finishing second at Sylvania Southview, but those tourneys were during the first two weekends of the season so it’s difficult to judge how much better he may have gotten. Alexander qualified for state in 2007 but missed out last year. He lost to Goebel 1-0 in the second round

and was eliminated by Patrick Henry’s Xavier Dye 8-5 in the third consolations. He was third at Van Buren and more recently second at Carey at 145 pounds losing to Hicksville’s Wes Schooley in the finals. He’s been nicked up this season with a number of losses. If he gets it together by the district tournament he’ll be dangerous draw on the bracket. Not sure who else gets out here in the No.4 spot, Gibsonburg‘s Seth Collum maybe? Goebel is certainly the favorite at the Archbold Sectional, but I’m struggling to find others I like here. I’ll

take Delta’s Max Pennington to advance after showing what he’s made of with a second place effort at the Perrysburg Invitational Tournament. Since I have to pick a couple of other kids here … Swanton’s Kyle Johnson was sixth at Van Buren and third at LCC for the Bulldogs. Another district qualifier could be Liberty Center’s Alex Hesson, who was sixth at Marion Pleasant. I’m grasping at straws here. I’m having trouble coming up with a solid list of state quality 140-pounders at Plymouth too. Margaretta’s Josh Ackerman, a returning district qualifier, was third at Fremont Ross and fourth at Tiffin

Columbian for the Polar Bears. Ontario’s Zach Bryson is the other returning district qualifier here and was fourth at Norwalk. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone else win the sectional here though. Maybe it will be Edison’s Tyler Matter who was second at Bellevue and fourth at Plymouth or someone

else I haven’t even mentioned here like Sandusky St. Mary‘s Perry Smith. Sonnenberg leads the way at the Carey Sectional and I think he’ll have few problems here. Hopewell-

Loudon’s Jaren Wickham and Mohawk’s Mitch Bloom are both returning district qualifiers But their positions aren’t safe with Buckeye Central’s Swayzee Hood and McComb’s Cody DeLaCerda also in the field. Wickham was third at Edison but has struggled at times this season Bloom has been more consistent

placing in a couple of big tourneys like Tiffin Columbian and Perry. Hood has earned a pair of fourth place finishes at Arcadia and Plymouth for a resurgent Buckeye Central team that had more than 20 kids come out for the team this season. Not sure he’s beaten any quality wrestlers though. DeLaCerda could very well qualify. Not outstanding, he isn’t bad either and was second to Sonnenberg at

the Carey Classic, although he failed to place at Van Buren. Tiffin Calvert’s Jacob Bowers is another thought. Other than Sonnenberg there are a lot of “maybes” at this

weight.

145 Pounds Projected Champion Alex Betts (Elmwood) Other Contenders 2. Chad Rufenacht (Archbold) 3. Ryan Neuberger (Edison) 4. Anthony Ferber (South Central) 5. Luke Boehm (Montpelier)

6. Jared Fleming (Port Clinton) 7. Taylor Schneider (Genoa) 8. Mike Swan (Western Reserve) 9. Cody Pridemore (Margaretta) 10. Wes Schooley (Hicksville) 11. Charlie Kreutzer (Lakota) 12. Travis Fitzpatrick (Mohawk) 13. Korey Casdorph (McComb)

This should be a pretty interesting weight class to watch at the Owens District. There are a pair of state qualifiers back here in Elmwood’s Alex Betts and Archbold’s Chad Rufenacht. My choice to win here is Betts, but it's no sure thing he’ll be champ because the other contenders here are

fairly closely grouped I believe. Betts, a district runner-up last season, hasn’t missed a beat this season finishing fourth at Medina, winning

at Van Buren and going unbeaten for the Royals at the Szymczak Duals. It will be interesting to see how the district draw turns out and if he faces Rufenacht in the semifinals. Speaking of Rufenacht, he did get nicked for a couple of surprising losses at the SMCC Duals when he

moved up to 152. He lost to Tiffin Calvert’s Jeff Stover by fall and fell to Paulding’s Brian Porter in a wild 14-12 decision. Also I have to add that he and Montpelier’s Luke Boehm have split a couple of matches this season as far as I can tell. Still if he performs to his capability, he should qualify. There are also a few other top contenders as you’ll see when we break down each of the sectionals. Perhaps the most crowded sectional at this weight class will be at Plymouth where there are lots of solid

wrestlers. Edison’s Ryan Neuberger, a state alternate at 140 last season, has been very good winning at Bellevue

and Edison and finishing second at Plymouth when he was forced to default in the final on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Not sure of his status though because he wasn’t in the lineup for the Chargers at the SMCC Duals. He scored a 4-1 win over Edgerton state qualifier Josh Goebel, which makes me think if he’s healthy, he’ll certainly be a primary candidate to grab a state spot. South Central’s Anthony Ferber, a returning district placer, has wrestled well for the Trojans. He won at

Black River, was second at Clyde and Mansfield Madison and third at Plymouth. He could make some noise at Owens. Western Reserve’s Mike Swan is also a returning district qualifier here. But he lost big to Rufenacht and Boehm at the SMCC Duals, so he’s not likely going to be a big factor at districts. Margaretta’s Cody Prideman is ranked in the Brakeman Report which kind of surprised me. He finished third at Tiffin Columbian and second recently at Cardinal Stritch. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone else from this field snuck into one of the top four sectional spots here

though. Rufenacht and Boehm lead the way at the Archbold Sectional, it’ll be interesting to see who wins the

rubber match at the NWOAL Tournament. Boehm had a pretty solid weekend at the SMCC Duals. He beat Swan handily but as mentioned before was pinned in his return match with Rufenacht. He has also won a pair of smaller tournaments at Stryker and Arcadia. Another wrestler to watch here is Hicksville’s Wes Schooley, who won a district match last season. He was

third at Stryker and fifth at the LCC Invite. He dropped to 145 for the Carey Classic though and edged Elmwood’s Cody Alexander, who was bumped up a weight, 10-9 for the title. My crystal ball is a little cloudy when it comes to figuring out a fourth district qualifier here. At Elmwood, Betts leads the way here. But I also like Genoa’s Taylor Schneider and Port Clinton’s Jared

Fleming to advance. Schneider was sixth at the Toledo Waite Invitational but by comparison lost to Betts (5-1) and Neuberger

(9-0) so he may a half-step behind the top wrestlers at this weight. Fleming is a returning district qualifier. He won at Stritch and was second at Bellevue and Black River. He lost by a 14-5 major decision to Ferber in the finals of the latter tourney. As for the No.4 spot here, maybe Lakota’s Charlie Krotzer will advance. The Carey Sectional is devoid of a lot of talent. There are two returning district qualifiers here though in

McComb’s Korey Casdorph and Mohawk’s Travis Fitzpatrick. Neither has been dominant. Casdorph was sixth at Southview but has lost to a couple of other kids in the Carey sectional like Carey’s Ethan Eatherton and Arcadia’s Brandon Perry so I’m not sure he even qualifies again. Fitzpatrick placed at Marion Pleasant and placed eighth for the Warriors at Perry. He may the best here but

won’t be a factor at districts. This will be a weight where a couple of young wrestlers will get the opportunity for some valuable experience at districts.

152 Pounds Projected Champion Xavier Dye (Patrick Henry) Other Contenders 2. Kyle Gladieux (Cardinal Stritch) 3. Michael Cawley (Norwalk St. Paul) 4. Miles Chapman (Hopewell-Loudon) 5. Brian Porter (Paulding) 6. Sam Elling (Liberty Center)

7. Jeff Stover (Tiffin Calvert) 8. Dylan Howard (Edison) 9. Dalton Hall (Ayersville) 10. Spencer Wotring (Toledo Christian) 11. Tyler Baer (Elmwood) 12. Tyler Haubiel (Ashland Crestview) 13. Kevin Lowery (Lakota) 14. Brandon Orians (Carey)

Patrick Henry’s Xavier Dye recently dropped to the 152 pound weight class and in doing so, cemented his

chances to become a district champ. It would have been tough for him to unseat Tiffin Calvert’s Kyle Kwiat at 160 but there are some excellent wrestlers like Norwalk St. Paul‘s Michael Cawley, Cardinal Stritch‘s Kyle Gladieux and Hopewell-Loudon’s Miles Chapman who will make this weight class a very challenging one. Dye’s been solid all season at 160, winning smaller tourneys at Arcadia and Woodmore before he dropped

to 152 and finished third at Lima Central Catholic. He qualified for state last season as a freshman and I certainly could see him grabbing a top four finish at state this season. That said, Cawley and Gladieux , who Brian Brakeman has made is No.1 and No.2 ranked wrestlers in the

state at 152, are just as good. I’d love to see all three make the awards stand at state. Gladieux, a state qualifier in 2007 as a freshman, has won everywhere including Northwood, Stritch and an

admittedly weaker than usual Catholic Invitational Tournament. I’d be shocked to see him not qualify. Cawley has also been outstanding winning at the J.C. Gorman and Willard Invitationals and finishing

second at Lorain Southview. He will lead a solid group of St. Paul wrestlers in the upper weights at districts. Chapman, a state alternate last season, was second at Columbian and won at Edison and Van Buren. I

like his chances to advance. Unless one of this quartet falter it doesn’t leave much wriggle room for anyone

else here. The interesting part as all four come from four different sectionals so they could meet in the semifinals. At Archbold, Dye leads the way but there are still some solid wrestlers like Ayersville’s Dalton Hall and

Paulding’s Brian Porter in the field. Rank Porter ahead of Hall based on head-to-head results. He was third at Lima Senior, second at Tipp City

and lost just once at the SMCC Duals. Hall has wrestled well winning at Stryker and finishing second to Dye by a 5-2 count at LCC. Not sure if either can put enough matches together at districts to qualify. Liberty Center’s Sam Elling, who was third at the Marion Harding Classic, is another possibility here but I

haven’t seen his name in the Tigers’ lineup recently. Cawley’s not the only one to watch at the Plymouth Sectional. Edison’s Dylan Howard is a returning district qualifier here. He was third at Plymouth and Bellevue and lost

to Chapman 9-6 for third place at the Edison invite the opening weekend of the season. Ashland Crestview’s Tyler Haubiel could be a factor here as well. There is still a district spot open here for someone to grab. I think it’s Gladieux’s turn to win at the Elmwood Sectional. Elmwood’s Tyler Baer and Lakota’s Kevin

Lowery are returning district qualifiers here. Baer is scrappy but will be very undersized here as he is really a 140 but his teammates Alexander and Betts are filling those spots right now. Still he was fourth at Van Buren at 152 pounds and he’ll certainly be one to watch at districts next season. Toledo Christian’s Spencer Wotring is also a returning district qualifier. An interesting aside, he appears to be the only TC wrestler competing this season. My final year coaching middle school wrestling was when this year’s seniors were eighth graders. We wrestled Toledo Christian and they came into the gym with 20 junior high wrestlers and proceeded to clean our clocks, and I had a pretty good team that year. My question is what the hell happened to all those good, young wrestlers? Back to the rest of the Elmwood competitors, Lowery was second at Stryker and sixth at Van Buren and

honestly I’m not sure how much better he is than some of the other kids in the field here like Genoa’s Justin Upham or Woodmore’s Joey Braun. I like Gladieux, Baer and Wotring to advance with one other district bid up for grabs here. It’s all about Chapman at the Carey Sectional. Jeff Stover has been a solid performer for Tiffin Calvert, finishing second to Chapman 12-6 in the finals at

Van Buren. He’s second-best here. Carey’s Brandon Orians won one of the weaker weight classes at the Carey Classic, so he may have the edge for the No.3 spot here. North Baltimore’s Justin Spencer may be the No.4 qualifier.

160 Pounds Projected Champion Kyle Kwiat (Tiffin Calvert) Other Contenders 2. Aaron Kapelka (Hopewell-Loudon) 3. Anthony Grine (Van Buren) 4. Jake Elling (Liberty Center) 5. Jared Leininger (Archbold)

6. Dakota Sheets (Edgerton) 7. T.J. Keathley (New London) 8. John Kenny (Bucyrus) 9. Mitchell Gross (Norwalk St. Paul) 10. Aaron Roach (Gibsonburg) 11. Shane Glenn (Otsego) 12. Rich Harris (Port Clinton)

Kyle Kwiat has been rolling at 160 pounds. A returning state placer everything I’ve seen tells me he’s the

one to beat at the 160-pound weight class at Owens Community College. He was seventh at the Ironman at 171 pounds to start the season. Since then all he’s done is win

championships at the J.C. Gorman, Van Buren and the GMVWA tournaments all with relative ease. He’ll be wrestling in college somewhere and I know that the University of Findlay has some interest in him. Barring any unfortunate circumstances, I think he’s a comfortably ahead of the rest of the competitors

here. Expect the competition for the three remaining state spots here to be quite entertaining. Van Buren’s Anthony Grine, Archbold’s Jared Leininger and Edgerton’s Dakota Sheets are all returning

district place winners but I really like what I’ve seen from Kwiat’s first cousin, Hopewell-Loudon junior Aaron Kapelka this season. Kapelka beat Grine in the Van Buren Invitational semifinals before running out of steam in a loss to Kwiat

in the finals. He’s won at Edison and Tiffin Columbian and completed an unbeaten run at Hopewell-Loudon’s duals. He often competes against some of the bigger boys at 171 pounds. With Kuzma, Dandurand and Chapman as possible state tournament qualifiers, add in Kapelka and the

Chieftains could score a lot of points as a team at Owens. Grine, Leininger and Sheets have also all been very good for their respective schools. Grine was fourth at Van Buren behind Kwiat, Kapelka and Bluffton’s Tyler Rayl (a very tough weight class)

and third at Woodmore and Tiffin Columbian. Leininger lost to Grine 5-4 in the fifth place match at districts last year and has had a solid season for the

Blue Streaks, although he has lost to Liberty Center’s Jake Elling 8-1 already this season.

Sheets was sixth at districts last season at 152 pounds. He just finished fourth at the LCC Invite and was unbeaten at the Archbold Duals. Certainly all are excellent candidates to qualify for state but someone in that group of five or six wrestlers

will be disappointed as they won’t be heading to Columbus. Unlike many of the other weight classes at Carey, the 160-pound class appears loaded. There’s Kwiat, Kapelka and Grine here and there’s a fourth wrestler here who’s quite good in Bucyrus’

John Kenny, a district quarterfinalist last season at 171 pounds. There appears no room for anyone else to qualify here. There are plenty of solid competitors at the Archbold Sectional too where Elling, Leininger and Sheets will

all compete. It looks like Elling is the one to beat here as he’s already beaten most of the top kids at this sectional. He suffered a narrow 8-6 loss to Patrick Henry’s Xavier Dye and scored a 4-3 win over Elmwood’s Jordan Ackley, one of the better 171-pound competitors, when the Tigers and Royals tangled in a dual match. He finished second at Marion Pleasant and fourth at Toledo Waite. Not sure who ends up fourth here. At the Plymouth Sectional, I’m thinking New London’s T.J. Keathley and Norwalk St. Paul’s Mitchell Gross

are the best of the bunch. Keathley, a returning district qualifier, was third at the J.C. Gorman and second at the LCC Invitational and

owns a 9-8 win over Gross in a dual meet between the Wildcats and Flyers. Gross also wrestled at Owens last season. He was second at Willard, fifth at the J.C. Gorman and fourth at Lorain Southview. That’s a good indicator of sectional success. I’m guessing whomever else qualifies for districts here won’t have much success the following week. I don’t think any of the 160 pounders will be in line for a chance at a state berth. Port Clinton’s Rich Harris won at Cardinal Stritch and may be the best of a pedestrian group here at the

Elmwood Sectional. Gibsonburg’s Aaron Roach was district qualifier last season and was second to Harris at Stritch while also grabbing a low placement at the Woodmore Classic. Pencil in Otsego’s Shane Glenn for the No.4 spot with final district spot at Elmwood wide open.

171 Pounds Projected Champion Chris Phillips (Monroeville) Other Contenders 2. Jordan Ackley (Elmwood) 3. Geoff Hainline (Norwalk St. Paul) 4. J.J. Hrabak (Fostoria St. Wendelin) 5. Dillon Kwiat (Tiffin Calvert) 6. Eric Puehler (Delta)

7. Nate Rader (Ontario) 8. Eric Boyce (Edison) 9. Eric Sowers (Mohawk) 10. Chris Kleman (Lakota) 11. Brandon Stacey (Liberty Center) 12. Kyle McCarty (Montpelier) 13. Austin Reiner (Swanton) 14. Joe Whisler (Ashland Crestview) 15. Jacob Fidler (Archbold)

I can’t even image the pressure on a kid like Chris Phillips. Last year he was being mentioned in the same

breath as legendary Iowa State college star Cael Sanderson. He lost his first career match the first weekend of the season at the Ironman. He was the best wrestler in

his weight class regardless of division last year and he probably is the best at 171 again this season. Plus, I’d imagine he’ll be at his best at both districts and state putting on a pinning display as Monroeville

tries to roll up as many points as possible trying to secure the team titles in both tourneys. He’s one of the most dominant wrestlers in the state…enough said. There should be some interesting competition for the remaining three state bids here.

It makes things difficult because none of the remaining field has any previous state tournament experience. Elmwood’s Jordan Ackley has been excellent this season for the Royals. He knocked off two of the top

contenders here, Fostoria St. Wendelin’s J.J. Hrabak (3-1) and Tiffin Calvert’s Dillon Kwiat (by default) on his way to winning at Van Buren. He was also seventh at Medina but has never seemed to be at his best when he’s wrestled at Owens in the past. I anticipate that will change this season. Hrabak and Kwiat might be in line for the other two spots but certainly nothing is guaranteed here. Hrabak won at Cardinal Stritch, Norwalk and Tippecanoe and ended up fifth at the CIT. All solid

performances. Kwiat’s optimum weight would be 160 pounds where his brother Kyle currently wrestles. Still he’s placed fifth at the Gorman and placed at the GMVWA tournament while essentially wrestling up a weight each week. He is a returning district placer, albeit a sixth place showing last year at 140 pounds. Another wrestler I really like to qualify is Norwalk St. Paul’s Geoff Hainline. The Flyers seem to be peaking

at the right time. Hainline won at Willard, the J.C. Gorman and Lorain Southview. Since he’ll likely be paired away from Phillips at Owens, he might be the best bet to be a district finalist at 171. There are others too here who could wrestle their way into the top four at this weight. I’m anticipating a real

shoot-out. Looking at the sectionals, the strongest appears to be at Plymouth. There’s Phillips and Hainline but there are also three others who could make some noise at Owens if they

qualify.

Eric Boyce has put a good season together at Edison. He won at Bellevue, was second at Plymouth and third at Edison. By comparison he dropped a 3-1 decision to Hainline. Ontario’s Nate Rader was fourth at the J.C. Gorman, third at Norwalk and was voted the MVW at the Bucyrus Duals. Both have excellent chances to score at the district level. Add in Crestview’s Joe Whisler, who dropped a 10-8 decsion to Rader and that adds up to five solid wrestlers for four district bids at Plymouth. At Elmwood, it’s Ackley’s weight to win, although Lakota’s Chris Kleman has had a pretty good season for

the Raiders. He won early in the season at Stryker, was third at Lima Central Catholic and ended up sixth behind a number of boys from this district at the Van Buren Invitational. He did fall to Ackley in a tight 3-2 bout at the SLL Duals. Not sure anyone else here will be much of a factor at Owens. Maybe guys like Port Clinton’s Ray Hopfinger or Genoa’s Jake Winters will qualify in the final two spots here. At Archbold, I’ve admittedly had trouble figuring out where the top boys here fit in district wide. I have a

feeling the sectional finalists here will play a key role in who qualifies for state at Owens. Liberty Center’s Brandon Stacey has had pretty good success at 189 pounds going unbeaten at the

Springfield Duals, placing sixth at Toledo Waite and eighth at the Marion Harding Classic. I think he’s down to 171 now but he didn’t place at Marion Pleasant. Delta’s Eric Puehler was fifth at Perrysburg and had a solid effort at the SMCC Duals pinning Boyce in the

process. He’ll certainly be on the district bracket. There are a couple of wrestlers with previous district experience at Archbold in Montpelier’s Kyle McCarty

and Swanton’s Austin Reiner. McCarty won at Arcadia, was second at Stryker and pinned Reiner when they met so pencil him in third here. Reiner has placed in a number of events including a fifth at Van Buren, fourth at Toledo St. John’s and second at Woodmore. Archbold’s Jacob Fidler is another thought. It should be a pretty good field at the Carey Sectional. Hrabak and Kwiat lead the way but there are some

other candidates to advance to districts here. Mohawk’s Eric Sowers looks good for at least the No.3 spot at Carey. He was fifth at Marion Pleasant and

Perry and fourth at Tiffin Columbian. Arcadia’s Dylan True was a district qualifier last season but I think has had trouble adjusting to a higher weight class. If I had to pick a the No.4 qualifier here, I’d say maybe Carey’s Jeff Hunter or Bucyrus’ Adam Rice.

189 Pounds Projected Champion Justin Cheesman (Ashland Crestview) Other Contenders 2. Michael Kleman (Lakota) 3. Isaac Livengood (Norwalk St. Paul) 4. Josh Stockmaster (Buckeye Central) 5. Brandon Tantari (Lake) 6. Oliver Williams (Ontario)

7. Robert Blake (Tinora) 8. Shem Neuenschwander (Archbold) 9. Mike Mullen (Tiffin Calvert) 10. Jake Baker (Elmwood) 11. Rob Steel (Margaretta) 12. Jake Baldwin (Liberty Center) 13. Nick Hineline (Cardinal Stritch) 14. Mike Grobogge (Patrick Henry) 15. Dillon Rickard (Fostoria St. Wendelin)

This might be one of the tougher weight classes for me to get a handle on at Owens. It may be the

weakest overall weight class at the district. Brian Brakeman was so unimpressed that he wrote just three sentences breaking down the entire district. Ashland Crestview’s Justin Cheesman has been dominant this season and I think he’s the odds on

champion here. He was the state alternate last season at 189 pounds and has won at Marion Elgin and was the MVP at the Crestview Duals in Week I. I really think he rolls here, barring illness or injury. Since I think a lot of the other wrestlers here are pretty closely matched, we’ll break down each sectional

and maybe that will help me get the wrestlers ranked. There’s Cheesman at the Plymouth Sectional, but I also like Ontario’s returning district qualifier Oliver

Williams and Norwalk St. Paul freshman Isaac Livengood. Williams is a returning district qualifier but hasn’t fared well against top men at this weight like Kleman and Cheesman. Livengood lost to Buckeye Central’s Stockmaster 8-3 but that was very early in the season. He’s just a freshman so I’d imagine he’s gotten much better since then as is indicated by his championship performance at Willard’s East of Chicago Invitational. He was also fourth at Lorain Southview. Who’s fourth here? Maybe Margaretta’s Rob Steel, who was second at Edison and fourth at Tiffin Columbian. Kleman has been a very good wrestler ever since he was a freshman and recently won his 100th career

match. I think it's time he punches his ticket to Columbus. He should lead the way at the Elmwood Sectional. He was second at Van Buren and fifth in a tough weight

class at the LCC Invitational. Lake’s Brandon Tantari is, like Kleman, a returning district qualifier. He was second at Northwood and third at Woodmore and dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Kleman at the SLL Duals. I think he’s a wildcard at this weight class at districts. Cardinal Stritch’s Nick Hineline was second at the Cardinal Stritch Invitational and is also a returning

district qualifier. He’s, at best, No.3 here. I also like Elmwood freshman Jake Baker, who seems to be coming on as of late. He’ll certainly be one to watch over the next few years.

There are a pair of district qualifiers back at the Archbold Sectional in Archbold’s Shem Neuenschwander and Tinora’s Rob Blake. Neither won a district match last season. Blake has finished fourth at Perrysburg and was unbeaten at the Archbold Duals. He’s probably a prohibitive favorite at Archbold. I’m having a hard time wading through the rest of the competitors at Archbold. I was going to add Patrick

Henry’s Mike Grobogge as a possible qualifier here but I haven’t seen his name in the Patriot lineup recently. I’m thinking someone from Delta (Jake Wilson?), Liberty Center (Jake Baldwin?) or Montpelier (Ben Saddoris?) will also advance here. It isn’t a strong 189-pound field at Carey. Buckeye Central’s Josh Stockmaster is best here. Stockmaster

won at Arcadia, was second at Plymouth and third at Van Buren. He’s seeking to become the Bucks’ first state qualifier since they reinstituted their program. Maybe some old timer out there can tell me if Buckeye Central had a state qualifier when they previously had a team in the 1970s and early ‘80s. The rest of the competitors here won’t be a factor at Owens. Fostoria St. Wendelin’s Dillon Rickard has

placed in several tourneys for the Mohawks. Calvert’s Mike Mullen has also fared well but there is some question as to whether or not he will compete since he is also a member of Calvert’s swim team. Not sure who to pencil in at No.4 here.

215 Pounds Projected Champion Craig Ritz (Edison) Other Contenders 2. Carl Sousa (Ashland Crestview) 3. Andrew Schwab (Liberty Center) 4. Matt DeAngelo (Tinora) 5. Kole Young (Seneca East) 6. Jacob Rhoad (Norwalk St. Paul) 7. Mark Castillo (Ayersville)

8. Kody Bellamy (Sandusky St. Mary’s) 9. Derek Johnson (Swanton) 10. Stephan Klotz (lakota) 11. Trae Cusac (Carey) 12. Jared Heidelbrink (Cardinal Stritch) 13. Jordan Hoyer (Fostoria St. Wendelin) 14. Matt Wells (Montpelier) 15. Jordan Romick (Huron) 16. Travis Tahy (Elmwood) 17. Chris Repp Gibsonburg)

I’ve said all season, “Where are all the good 215-pounders?” I’m still looking for them. There are some good wrestlers here like Edison’s Craig Ritz, a returning state qualifier, and Ashland

Crestview’s Carl Sousa. There are some heavyweights with options that may end up in this weight class. But I see few wrestlers here that are going to be able to compete at a state tournament level should they qualify. Although it should be noted that there are a couple of good heavyweights that are really 215 pounds that

may drop down to compete here which would make things interesting. It may happen because I see the 285-pound division at Owens a much tougher weight class. Ritz won at Bellevue and was second at Edison and Plymouth. At Plymouth he was rocked by Delphos

Jefferson’s Stuart Miller, a NW District wrestler headed to the Kettering District, that Brakeman picked to win state. He’s the most experienced wrestler here certainly and probably No.1. Sousa won a couple of district matches last season and is improved greatly. There were some questions

whather or not he would even compete in the postseason, but I have been given the word that he will. I like him to qualify too as possibly a district fnalist. The rest of the field may be a step below these two. But if Bucyrus’ Kody Charlton, a state qualifier at 285

last season, and Liberty Center’s Andrew Schwab, another heavyweight, compete here, all bets are off and they’ll both almost certainly be in the mix for a state bid. The toughest sectional here is undoubtedly the Plymouth Sectional. Ritz and Sousa are here but so are three or four other wrestlers that have had good seasons. Seneca East’s Kole Young is a returning district qualifier and has had some success for the Tigers finishing

third at Van Buren and fourth at Plymouth. There’s also Norwalk St. Paul’s Jacob Rhoad, who won recently at Willard and was fourth at Lorain Southview. Huron’s Jordan Romick has beaten a couple of district qualifiers while Kody Bellamy finished fifth at Perry for Sandusky St. Mary’s. I think those three wrestlers battle it out for the final two district bids here. There are a lot of good wrestlers to choose from at the Archbold Sectional. At 215 pounds, Schwab, a sixth place district finisher at 285 pounds last season, has been fifth at Marion

Pleasant and fifth at Toledo Waite. Ayersville’s Mark Castillo and Montpelier’s Matt Wells, both district qualifiers, will also likely vie for return trips to Owens. Castillo finished third at Woodmore at 215 pounds and has picked his spots at times moving up to heavyweight to get some wins. Wells was second at Arcadia and Stryker but it looks like he’s been surpassed by wrestlers like Tinora’s Matt D’Angelo and Swanton’s Derek Johnson. D’Angelo had an excellent tournament at the SMCC Duals wih several wins over wrestlers that will be listed on the 215-pound bracket at Owens. I’m not particularly enamored with the group of 215-pounders at Elmwood. Elmwood’s Travis Tahy and Gibsonburg’s Chris Repp are both returning district qualifiers but neither is

likely going to strike fear into the hearts of the top boys in this weight class at Owens.

Tahy has been good in dual meet tournaments but he hasn’t beaten any of the top contenders here. Repp was fourth at Woodmore and fifth at Cardinal Stritch, which doesn’t make me confident he’ll qualify again. Actually I think Lakota’s Stephan Klotz, a runner-up at Van Buren and 7-3 winner over Tahy at the SLL

Duals, and Cardinal Stritch’s Jared Heidelbrink might just end up in the finals here. At the Carey Sectional, unless Charlton drops down, I don’t see anyone from here advancing to Columbus.

Carey’s Trae Cusac looks like he is starting to put it together for the Blue Devils and he may have risen to most favored status. St. Wendelin returning district qualifier Jordan Hoyer or Tiffin Calvert’s Kyle Garrison should be in the mix to earn a district bid.

285 Pounds Projected Champion Nick Hamilton (South Central) Other Contenders 2. Chris Doughty (Norwalk St. Paul) 3. Kody Charlton (Bucyrus) 4. Mimmo Lytle (Swanton) 5. Ben St. John (Woodmore) 6. Michael Galvan (Fostoria St. Wendelin)

7. Clint Endicott (Ashland Crestview) 8. Nino Majoy (Huron) 9. Charlie Chesser (Margaretta) 10. Sean Slee (Liberty Center) 11. Marc Moser (Tinora) 13. Chase Howard (Montpelier) 14. Kyle Niederkohr (Carey) 15. Scott Borer (Tiffin Calvert)

There are plenty of excellent heavyweights in the Northwest District this season and that should make

the 285-pound division fun to watch this year at Owens. Three state qualifiers return here so that doesn’t leave much margin for error for others in this class. To

qualify you’ll likely have to pull off an upset of some sorts. It looks like yet another Firelands Conference wrestler will be on the top step of the awards stand when

the district tournament wraps up Saturday evening. South Central’s Nick Hamilton, Norwalk St. Paul’s Chris Doughty and Bucyrus’ Kody Charlton are all

returning state qualifiers, although between them, they won just one bout in Columbus last season. I’ll put the favorite tag on Hamilton. He was second at districts last season. He also won at Black River

and took the Willard invite by fall against Doughty in the finals. He lost two tournaments by 2-1 margins in the finals losing to Sandusky Division I state runner-up Delonne Baker of Sandusky at Clyde and to Versailles Mike Treon at Plymouth. He also wrestled Doughty again in a tight 4-3 bout in a dual meet. Doughty is next best here I’d imagine. He was second at Lorain Southview and fourth at the J.C.

Gorman and certainly could win this weight. There’s also Bucyrus’ Kody Charlton, another returning state qualifier. He’s weighing his options and

could end up competing at 215. I think he’d qualify at either weight. He did lose by fall to Hamilton in the finals at Mansfield Madison, but won at Marion Pleasant and was second at the Gorman. With those three here that leaves but one state tournament spot open unless there’s an upset

somewhere on the bracket. It’s an extremely crowded field at the Plymouth Sectional with Hamilton and Doughty both competing

there. There are a couple of excellent youngsters here in Ashland Crestview’s Clint Endicott and Huron’s Nino

Majoy. Endicott won 1-0 when they met earlier in the season. They still may be a year away from qualifying but they can win matches at the district level. Another wrestler to watch here is Margaretta’s Charlie Chesser. He was second at Cardinal Stritch and

Fremont Ross at third at Tiffin Columbian. There are some other pretty decent wrestlers here but they won’t get an opportunity to wrestle at Owens. With Schwab and Castillo likely to be down at 215 pounds. The two wrestlers I like at the Archbold

Sectional are Swanton freshman Mimmo Lytle and Tinora returning district qualifier Marc Moser. Lytle is quite good. Winning tournaments at Van Buren and Toledo St. John’s, he also finished fourth at LCC and second at Elyria Catholic. Like Endicott, and Majoy, you just don’t know how a freshman, especially at heavyweight is going to do at districts, where you have to string three or four tough wins together just to qualify. Moser hasn’t beaten any of the top kids here. He may advance but probably won’t be a player at Owens. Fairview’s Jared Pendleton pinned Moser and has finished second at Carey and third at Cardinal Stritch he could advance. Two other wrestlers to watch may be Sean Slee, a third place heavyweight finisher at Marion Pleasant and maybe Montpelier’s Chase Howard. One wrestler that hasn’t created that much buzz but certainly may be at the mix at Owens is

Woodmore’s Ben St. John. He won at the Woodmore Classic and Tiffin Columbian and was third behind Doughty and Hamilton at Willard. He’ll be one to watch at districts. Not sure who else to mention here as none have been particularly impressive in the tournaments they’ve competed in this season. Maybe Lakota’s Jarrett Smith or Elmwood’s Trevor Tyson will qualify here. Charlton will lead the way at the Carey Sectional with St. Wendelin’s Michael Galvan, a district qualifier in

2007, next. Galvan was the CIT runner-up and has been a top three placer in just about all the

tournament’s the Mohawks have competed in this season. He’s got more than 100 career wins and could spring an upset or two at Owens. Other than that’s there’s really not a lot of depth. Maybe Carey’s Kyle Niederkohr or Calvert’s Scott Borer will advance here.

Let’s take a quick look at the teams in each sectional… CAREY SECTIONAL

ARCADIA REDSKINS -- After a nice run of wrestlers like Mason True and Lee Shumaker, the Redskins are in a bit of a rebuilding mode right now. Junior Anthony Elchert is seeking to get back to Columbus after qualifying for state as a freshman. He’ll probably be shadowed by a couple of teammates at Owens. BUCKEYE CENTRAL BUCKS -- Buckeye Central had more than 20 wrestlers come out for the team this year after having just 4 stick it out the entire season last year. I’d think the Bucks could get three or for to Owens and 189-pounder Josh Stockmaster, could be the school’s first state qualifier. TIFFIN CALVERT SENECAS -- A great job in rebuilding the program by coaches Mike Steyer and Matt Coleman. They started with four wrestlers and have won the last two MAL titles. Kyle Kwiat is an odds-on favorite to win a district title, they’ll advance quite a few to districts but it remains to be seen if any can place at Owens. CAREY BLUE DEVILS -- A good young team, with good numbers too. I’ll imagine they’ll get quite a few district qualifiers, maybe as many as six or seven, but it will be tough for any of them to qualify for state. Certainly a team to watch the next couple of years. FOSTORIA ST. WENDELIN MOHAWKS -- They have a couple of quality district performers in J.J. Hrabak and Michael Galvan. May send a couple of more to Owens like Jordan Hoyer and Dillon Rickard. Graduation will take a heavy toll on the Mohawks with no junior high wrestlers to fill the ranks next season at my alma mater. HOPEWELL-LOUDON CHIEFTAINS -- There are a possible four state qualifiers in the Chieftain lineup in Chapman, Dandurand, Kuzma and Kapelka. If things fall right and they get a little help, they’ll certainly finish among the top five teams, or better, at Owens. McCOMB PANTHERS -- Not sure if the Panthers have any state qualifiers in their lineup this season. If they are healthy and wrestling well they could move four or five wrestlers on to districts though. NORTH BALTIMORE TIGERS -- Coach John DuVall has things going in the right direction at North Baltimore. They’ll advance a few wrestlers to districts and hope to make an even bigger push next season. RIVERDALE FALCONS -- The Falcons are extremely young. With improved numbers at the elementary and middle school levels, Riverdale will be more competitive next season. VAN BUREN BLACK KNIGHTS -- The Black Knights have all the weight classes filled from 103 to 160 but have no upper weights. They have a chance to qualify a pair of wrestlers to state in the same season for the first time since the 1980s as Sonnenberg and Grine have excellent chances to qualify. BUCYRUS REDMEN -- Always a little tough to judge Bucyrus here because they don’t get the chance to compete against many of the schools in the sectional. Charlton, of course, is a returning state qualifier and he’ll lead the way for them at Owens. Dye at 103 and Kenny at 171 are other wrestlers to watch for the Redmen. MOHAWK WARRIORS -- Because of an expensive pay-to-play plan and other money woes the Warriors will head into the sectional with just seven wrestlers. Parker is a returning state qualifier and they’ll advance others to districts, but they just don’t have enough bodies right now.

ARCHBOLD SECTIONAL ARCHBOLD BLUE STREAKS -- Expect the host Blue Streaks to have another terrific showing at sectionals. Plenty of potential state qualifiers here like Weirauch, Rufenacht, Cowell plus plenty of others like Meyer and Leininger who will undoubtedly score points at Owens. A top 10 district team. AYERSVILLE PILOTS -- Pilots seem to have really been coming on of late. Based on their performance at LCC and Celina. Like the looks of maybe Mansfield and Hussey at districts being joined by four or five teammates at Owens. DELTA PANTHERS -- It’s a young Delta team. My apologies to them and coach Wolford because I may just have overlooked some of their young ones when writing this report. They still have Tolson, Smith and Rayfield all back after district appearances last season. A could see four or five other Panthers performing well here too. EDGERTON BULLDOGS -- Goebel is a returning state qualifier and will score well at Owens. Things might be more difficult for returning district placer Dakota Sheets, who seems to be in a very tough weight class. Not sure who else advances for Edgerton, they’ll qualify one or two others though. FAIRVIEW APACHES -- With no returning district qualifiers and no wrestlers likely to make any of the sectional championship matches here, I’m not sure how the Apaches fare. Maybe Meyer, Jacob or Pendleton advance for them but none are sure bets to wrestle at Owens. HICKSVILLE ACES -- Reid, Adams and Schooley all have district experience for Hicksville. Schooley has the most potential of doing damage at the district level of the trio. I’m most interested in watching their 112-pounder Cody Laney, who seems to have flown under the radar for most of the season. LIBERTY CENTER TIGERS -- I would assume the Tigers are the team to beat here. They have a solid lineup just about from top to bottom. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Liberty Center qualify 10 wrestlers to districts and finish in the top 3 teams at Owens. MONTPELIER LOCOMOTIVES -- Fairly solid top to bottom lineup, but there are probably no wrestlers who one could consider a sure bet to qualify for state this season. Still the Locos could have six or seven wrestlers at districts and with that many qualifiers, the chance is that one or more of them will find a place on the awards stand at districts. PATRICK HENRY PATRIOTS -- Numbers are down a bit for the Patriots this season but quality hasn’t taken a holiday. Lopez and Dye are both potential district finalists, not sure who else will escape this tough sectional though for Patrick Henry. PAULDING PANTHERS -- Probably Porter or one of the Rohrs boys will do best for Paulding at sectionals this season. Panthers have made steady improvement throughout the season and may surprise a few teams at Archbold. STRYKER PANTHERS -- Stryker is young and short in numbers this season, even with two boys named Short, in their lineup. Not sure who advances for the Panthers, maybe their heavyweight Flory is the best bet, but he’ll have to have a heckuva tourney. SWANTON BULLDOGS -- How can you not like a kid named Mimmo? It’ll be interesting see how their tough freshman heavyweight holds up at districts. Reiner and Johnson both have shots at advancing too for the Bulldogs. TINORA RAMS -- Strength of the team is at 130 with Bodenbender and with the big boys with Robert Blake at 189, Matt DeAngelo at 215 and Marc Moser at 285. Bodenbender is probably their best chance to qualify but don’t count one of the other three out.

ELMWOOD SECTIONAL CARDINAL STRITCH CARDINALS --The Cardinals have a couple of district finalist candidates in Reindel and Gladieux. Hineline, Heidelbrink and Bacon likely make it out sectionals too. ELMWOOD ROYALS -- I count eight returning district qualifiers in the lineup for Elmwood and there’s three others who I think will probably advance to Owens. If everything goes right the Royals could compete for some district hardware, the question is do they have enough depth to offset four Monroeville champs? EVERGREEN VIKINGS -- The little guys will likely lead the way for the Vikings here. Bettinger, Smith and Heilman have wrestled at Owens before. They could be joined by Fahrer and Lulfs at 103 and 119 respectively. Not sure if any advance past districts though. GENOA COMETS -- Gantka placed at districts last season and Traver was a state qualifier in 2007. Espinoza could do some damage at districts and I’d imagine the Comets will have at least five or six wrestlers in the field at Owens. GIBSONBURG GOLDEN BEARS -- Roach and Repp are district returnees for the Golden Bears. But I also like Escobedo to advance too for the ageless Coach Funk. LAKE FLYERS -- Espinoza and Tantari have wrestled well all season for the Flyers. They advance here and could be dark horses for state qualification in their respective weight classes at Owens. LAKOTA RAIDERS -- The top of the lineup looks strongest for the Raiders with Michael Kleman leading the way at 189 pounds. Could be a nice contingent of Lakota wrestlers at districts. Chris Kleman, Klotz, Lowery and Krotzer could all find their way on the bracket at Owens. NORTHWOOD RANGERS -- Mendoza is seeking a return trip to districts, but it won’t be easy here. Not sure who else advances for the Rangers. One of the Schlicters, Lang at 103? We’ll find out. OTSEGO KNIGHTS -- Kodie Glosser is a returning state qualifier for coach Tom Maidlow’s Knights. Alex Glenn has fared well this season too. The strength of Otsego’s lineup is 112 through about 140. PORT CLINTON REDSKINS -- Lots of different kids have been shuffled in and out of the lineup for the Redskins this season. A few questions need to be answered like where’s state qualifier Derek Johannsen been? He and the Fleming boys will certainly advance to Owens and I’d imagine there will be at least a couple of others. FREMONT ST. JOSEPH CRIMSON STREAKS -- Austin Hilty is a returning district qualifier and the best bet to advance for a young St. Joseph squad. But he may have his work cut out for him in what looks to be a solid field of 112 pounders here. TOLEDO CHRISTIAN EAGLES -- What’s happened to Toledo Christian. They’ve had just one wrestler, district qualifier Spencer Wotring, for most of the season. There hasn’t been a school in the Northwest District drop wrestling since Mansfield St. Peter’s did it in the early 1990s. Let’s hope the school gets it together soon. WOODMORE WILDCATS -- Ben St. John will be one to watch in the 285-pound division at Owens and he could get a good draw coming out of Elmwood with a sectional title. I’d advise other coaches not to get in a scrap with coach Dane Bonningson, I saw him pummel a guy in an MMA match on SportsTime Ohio a couple of months back.

PLYMOUTH SECTIONAL ASHLAND CRESTVIEW COUGARS -- Lots to like at Crestview this season with a strong contingent at the top of the lineup like Cheesman, Sousa and Endicott that all have state qualifying potential. Look for a number of their middleweights to qualify too. EDISON CHARGERS -- I’d be surprised not to see the Chargers finish among the top five teams at Owens. With returning state qualifiers Tim Majoy and Ritz and district placer Michel all leading the way, the question is will Neuberger be back and who in the rest of the lineup will be contributors at districts. HURON TIGERS -- Two of the Top Tigers Romick and Majoy compete in a couple of the tougher weights at this sectional. I’ve got a feeling I’ve missed someone here who will advance. MARGARETTA POLAR BEARS -- Smith, Siesel and Ackerman have previous district experience and Chesser has come on of late but is in that brutal 285-pound class. I have a gut feeling one of those guys may end up grabbing a district medal when its said and done. MONROEVILLE EAGLES -- What else needs to be said. They have the Fab Four and Johnson and Clark could score well at the district level too. Sounds to me like it could be the recipe to a district championship for the Eagles. NEW LONDON WILDCATS -- Keathley could be a potential state qualifier for the Wildcats. Amburgy and McGrail could win matches at Owens too. Someone in their middleweights will step forward at sectionals too. ONTARIO WARRIORS -- Rader and Williams at 171 and 189 are the best wrestlers for the Warriors. I readily admit I may have undervalued some of their performers and I’ll be interested in watching for some of the Ontario wrestlers I may have missed on. PLYMOUTH BIG RED -- Plymouth was in a rebuilding mode this season. The Big Red will be represented at districts again with Rinehart likely making the trip. Can McDonald and others qualify too? SENECA EAST TIGERS -- Steve Heal is another coach with a young team this season. The Tigers’ Crapo and Young are looking to advance to Owens again this season but both would have to pull off a few upsets to punch their tickets to Columbus. SANDUSKY ST. MARY’S PANTHERS -- A rebuilding year for the Panthers, who were certainly hurt when state qualifier Max Dahs suffered an injury during football season and wasn’t able to compete. They still have Harrington, who end up wrestling for a state title. Can Pavia get back to Columbus and who among their young guns will step up and qualify? NORWALK ST. PAUL FLYERS -- It appears St. Paul is making a late-season push. The Flyers are stacked with a solid lineup from 152 which features Brakeman state champion pick Cawley to state qualifier Doughty at heavyweight. Looking forward to seeing how well St. Paul freshman Isaac Livengood fares in the postseason. SOUTH CENTRAL TROJANS -- A team of six, all of them solid wrestlers. Oney and Hamilton both could win championships, a little help from Ferber and a few others could vault the Trojans into the top 10 at districts. WESTERN RESERVE ROUGHRIDERS -- My brother lives in Wakeman, my nephew goes to Western and I have never been able to get a good handle on these guys. They shuffle their lineup around quite a bit but Swan and Grys appear to be the best of the bunch here.
