In review of 2009, it is once again with admiration that I look at the progress that has been made over the year and the dedication of so many to make things happen. The focus and depth of our Board of Directors in reviewing, discussing, and approving the plans and dreams of this administration has truly been in keeping with the policies set out under Board Governance. In May, to ensure that the Board is governing through policies and that the policies are fair and manageable, the Board participated in a very active, educational, and fun session under the leadership of Nowshad Ali * On Purpose Leadership Inc. The results clearly confi rmed that through diligence and team work Prairieland has and will continue to make a diff erence and provide continued growth to our community.
The second year for our Prairieland Park Community Partnership Program was awarded to Interval House. Their participation at Prairieland events throughout the year provided them with the opportunity to create awareness of their programs and needs. Through administration, I’m sure the highlight was the complimentary admissions, transportation, midway rides and food vouchers for moms and their children to have a fun day at the Ex. You should have seen the smiles on those young faces!
Through our Community Relations Committee, chaired by Trevor Forrest, great strides have been made in communicating to the business community and to all levels of government the many programs, events and extra involvement Prairieland commits to each year. Special luncheons are planned throughout the year to convey these messages plus an invitation to see our events fi rst-hand is extended.
The committed work of the Audit / Finance Committee, chaired by Jack Brodsky, provides the members of the corporation with the assurance that the audit is being conducted and that the fi nancial performance is being monitored. It has been a challenging time with the many capital projects taking place and the fi nancial commitment the corporation has invested. Credit goes to the meticulous work of the fi nance department under the leadership of Chief Financial Offi cer – Dan Kemppainen.
As has been the case for a number of years now, the Site Development Committee, chaired by Adele Buettner, has been on the tear – demolishing and cleaning up, building new facilities and redesigning the old, plus beautifying the site with new fencing, paving, signage and planting a variety of trees and shrubs. With the assistance that has been received from all levels of government over the past four years many of these projects have been realized and it has been fun seeing them come to fruition. During the past two years of my Presidency, I have heard many comments
about the noticeable visual upgrades to Prairieland Park that makes it, in the minds of the public, a more attractive place to attend various events throughout the year. At this time I would like to recognize one of the members of this committee. This person has been very dedicated to the projects over the nine years he has served on the Board – and was always the one to say - “let’s make sure that we build it right the fi rst time.” Thank you Ron Lee for your input and determination - together we have come a long way.
In conclusion on my fi nal year as President, I would like to commend Chief Executive Offi cer – Mark Regier and his team of professionals for their commitment to continued growth and development, their dedication to customer service, and their enthusiasm to keep the programs interesting, fresh, and fun. Also a special thank you to all of the Board members for the support, understanding, and the camaraderie we have enjoyed.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, VOLUNTEER BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT
When the Long-Term Site Development Concept Plan was approved by City Council in 1999, it was the promise and belief of the Board of Directors and management that the redevelopment of Prairieland Park was a priority even if it meant starting with the sewer systems. No one at that time could have envisioned the wonderful developments that would make Prairieland Park what it is today. This year we were extremely pleased with the announcement of $3 million from the Community Adjustment Fund, Government of Canada, for the renovation of Halls A & B. Once completed in June of 2010, Hall A will provide conferencing technology and products in specially designed break-out rooms that will compliment any trade show, while Hall B will provide clients with exceptional banquet and food service requirements. Since 1999 and in particular since 2006 when the construction of new buildings was started, the goal has been to increase business both for Prairieland and the City of Saskatoon and develop a complex that the members of this corporation and our city could be proud of – that goal continues to hold strong.
As is documented in the upcoming pages, the programs produced by Prairieland continue to grow through careful review of each show to keep them fresh, informative and entertaining. This year, The Ex received funding from the Marquee Tourism Event Fund, through the Government of Canada, which provided us the opportunity to expand our market into international locations plus the development of a new performance area. This added support along with a tremendous entertainment package and fantastic weather resulted in all time records being set in attendance (215,476) and midway sales.
There is tremendous enthusiasm and excitement from both the race fans and the thoroughbred horse owners and trainers about the future of this industry in our province. Statistics show that increases in all segments of the program were up from 2008 which mirrors the positive performance of the live meet. Results show that 178 of 235 races contained 8 horses or more which resulted in a handle of $882,440. The teletheatre program was also up with wagering at $10.3 million. The challenges and opportunities go hand in hand as eff orts to increase the handle both in the live and simulcast programs continue.
As management strives to fulfi ll the VISION, MISSION and VALUES of this corporation, the SERVICE BEST program, produced and administered through STEC – SK Tourism Education Council, was introduced to carry out these goals. SERVICE BEST is based on the belief that each one of us can and must make a diff erence to the customer’s experience. This philosophy is extremely important
as we strive to be world-class. Employment standards have now been developed that clearly defi nes the expected professional and customer service level. Administering and monitoring SERVICE BEST will now be an ongoing initiative of this corporation.
The importance of SERVICE BEST can best be appreciated when you consider the number of events and event days that take place at Prairieland Park. In 2009 there were 230 events which equates into 1119 event days considering all facilities and performance areas. The success of these events lies solely on the shoulders of our team and how they carry out their duties and obligations determines the opportunity for new and/or continued business.
The accomplishments of Prairieland Park are directly related to the dedication and vision of the Board of Directors, the support of our valuable corporate partners, the interest and commitment of our committee members, and the solid foundation of our membership / volunteer core.
Thank you to all - for caring about Prairieland.

In addition to an outstanding trade show, additional features include the Seager Wheeler Pedigreed Seed Show and the Bayer CropScience Information Theatre, where a premier line-up of well known and respected speakers will present a variety of topics. The 2009 show welcomed 291 companies from across Canada and the United States in 882 indoor booths which utilized all available space in the trade show complex. Youth Leadership ConferenceMarch 20 - 22, 2009This popular youth program was presented in a new format in 2009. The Prairieland Youth Leadership Conference was held as a stand-alone event in March and attracted 69 of Saskatchewan’s top youth. Participants were required to take part in a variety of activi-ties focusing on leadership and team building, as well as individual interviews. Prairieland Park again awarded $8,000 in scholarships to the top 5 competitors.
Gardenscape March 27 - 29, 2009Gardenscape was another great success in 2009 with an increase in both attendance and exhibitors. The feature this year was a live walk through butterfl y exhibit. More than 10,000 native and exotic butterfl ies were released into a 4,000 square foot butterfl y house which included a professionally designed garden. Both children and adults were fascinated with the experience of becoming a landing site for these delicate, beautiful creatures of the garden. It’s not really spring until Gardenscape arrives to herald in the spring growing season in Saskatchewan.
Western Canadian Livestock ExpoApril 22 & 23, 2009Livestock Expo provides exhibitors and patrons the opportunity to network and learn about the most up-to-date technology in the pork and dairy industries. The 2009 event was held in our new Prairieland Park Ag Center. Show ring competitions included the Na-tional Jersey Show which featured 70 Jerseys from across the country. The Holstein show included 110 animals competing in open, youth and futurity classes.A new format in 2009 saw the trade show and show ring in the same building, with all available trade show space sold out to 45 companies in 66 trade show booths. The annual WCLE Sale was well attended, selling 45 lots for an average of $2308 each.
Prairieland Junior Ag Showcase July 2 – 6, 20094-H members from across the province came together at the new Prairieland Park Ag Center to showcase their current year project and engage in good-natured competition and camaraderie. In excess of 300 animals were on display, plus a record-breaking 236 entries in the homecraft and woodworking competitions. Moving the event into the new Ag Center provided fi rst-rate stabling and showring conditions, giving participants and spectators an outstanding venue despite any inclement weather.

AG-EXperience for StudentsOctober 20 & 21, 2009In an eff ort to off er a more diversifi ed and up-to-date agriculture education pro-gram for students, Prairieland Park partnered with Agriculture in the Classroom to present a new program called AG-EXperience for Students. Students were guided through stations covering a variety of agriculture sectors including dairy, pork, beef, poultry, egg, animal by-products, weather, crops, sheep and goats, bees, soil/water, and were able to watch a live cow milking demonstration. Over 800 Grade 4 students participated in the 2-day program that also included live animal displays and a “cookie” auction. Surveys from teachers and students indicate an extremely successful program was presented and will expand to a three-day program in 2010. Prairieland Park members acted as volunteer tour guides for each class and were wonderful ambassadors for Prairieland.
Saskatchewan InDemandNovember 6 – 8, 2009Now in its third year, Saskatchewan Indemand continues to be a work in progress, expanding in breadth and depth as the network of Saskatchewan producers and in-terested consumers grows. The trade show included 38 companies whose purpose was to showcase and promote local agriculture and agribusiness. Saskatchewan food products were featured in the 2nd Annual Saskatchewan Chef’s Association Competition, and three additional daily cooking demonstrations. The Blue Cross Information Theatre played host to well-known TV personality CJ Katz as well as herbalist, Wanda Wolfe from Lone Wolfe Herbs. Both speakers presented interest-ing, educational information on nutrition, health and wellness. Another highlight of the show was Fibre Indemand, Naturally! showcasing distinctive products from a number of Saskatchewan fi bre sources.
Saskatoon Fall FairNovember 11 – 14, 2009Fall Fair was held in the Prairieland Park Ag Centre again in 2009. There was ample space for all exhibitors and the Commercial and Purebred show rings were both in the heated arena, which was much more comfortable for spectators. Exhibitors and spectators were pleased with the new format and the show was deemed a success by all. In excess of 200 purebred cattle were showcased in breed shows, the Cinder-ella Classic, Senor Challenge Bull Show, Junior Classic and Prospect Steer and Heifer Show & Sale. In the Commercial Cattle division entries were strong and prices remained similar to previous years.
