JA Financial Responsibility

Early on, students are taught the fundamental tenets of sound economics. Basic lessons on savings and Needs vs. Wants set the foundation for a fiscally responsible future!

EntrepreneurshipJA curriculum instills the entrepreneurial spirit in students. At all levels, they learn the skills and principles of owning their own business.

Workforce ReadinessThe third and final pillar of JA is workforce readiness. Students are taught resume writing, interview skills, business ethics and the economics of success.

enWe would like to convey our sincerest appreciation to you, our JA friends: our board of directors, teachers, volunteers, businesses, principals, superintendents, and donors, who have brought JA into the lives and classrooms of the 39,710 kindergarten to twelfth grade students we served during the 2008-2009 school year.

Junior Achievement’s lessons of financial responsibility, entrepreneurship and workforce readiness have been given a renewed relevance as the nation evaluates its own economic challenges. Now more than ever, the value of these lessons is glaring!

The wealth of knowledge and experience being shared in classrooms across San Diego & Imperial Counties will also bring great rewards to our community, as students are more prepared to enter the world of work.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to get involved, we invite you to join over 2,000 community and business volunteers, 50 board members and hundreds of donors, foundations and individuals who support us each year!

JA curriculum is taught by volunteers from the business community who use their own experiences to supplement the curriculum, making the world of work come alive for each and every class!

Middle School

Junior Achievement Middle School programs delve deeper into business and the global economy. Students are taught the critical connections between education and their eventual career choices.

High School

In High School, students explore more complicated concepts such as business ethics and macro & micro-economics. They are given the opportunity to start and manage actual companies and experience a real taste of the competitive nature of the business world.

Elementary

JA Elementary programs lay the foundation for a fiscally responsible future. Lessons build on each other as students progress through elementary school,giving a well-rounded understanding of their roles within their community, city, state and nation.

JA BizTown

The McGrath Family JA BizTown at Junior Achievement’s Frontier Trading Free Enterprise Center is the capstone to our Elementary curriculum. Following five weeks of in-class curriculum, fifth graders visit JA BizTown and experience the world of work as they run a 10,000 square foot mini-San Diego built just for them.

JA Titan is an exciting new program that places high school students in the CEO’s seat as they operate a virtual business. The program culminates with the JA Titans of Industry Business Challenge in which the top performing high schools compete to see who will come out on top as they wrestle with decisions on profit, sales, market share and learn the nuances of running a global business in a competitive, high-tech marketplace.

Junior Achievement has partnered with Point Loma Nazarene University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) business club to bring The JA Company Program to almost 300 high school students. Under the guidance of PLNU SIFE business students, JA Company Program participants start and manage their own companies while learning about the economic principles that influence business decisions, career opportunities and work readiness skills. They also develop entrepreneurial skills and hone the ability to work productively on a team.

officers half way through the program, and the Entrepreneurial Competition at the culmination of their in-class lessons. From these events, students hear from San Diego business leaders and learn valuable concepts to improve their class business and compete against each other in the areas of Product Originality, Overall Profit-ability and Social Responsibility.

Program

SpotlightIn addition to our traditional in-class programs, JA San Diego is proud to shine the spotlight on programs and partnerships that are allowing us to reach thousands of students.

EthiCAL is a partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education and Junior Achievement to help students navigate important ethical decisions.

This televised, town-hall meeting provides middle and high school students with an open forum to discuss ethics with local San Diego leaders on chosen topics, including the environment, advertising, business and education.

JA Student Ambassadors is a customized leadership program for selected students and provides extended enrichment to JA programs. All JA Ambassadors are engaged in Toastmasters, as well as networking and etiquette classes to obtain skills that will last a lifetime.

JA Ambassadors are nominated by their teachers and/or principals; a new class is selected each year to serve as the face of JA at all our events.

The City of Carlsbad uses JA’s third grade curriculum to help students establish a sense of pride in the city where they live. City Stuff students attend a city council meeting and finish the program with a greater understanding of how a city works.

JASD is one of the select non-profits chosen as recipients of the annual Billy Casper Golf Tournament and we are grateful to have been chosen the past 18 years! The Billy Casper Youth Foundation does so much for the youth of America and we are honored to be affiliated with such a worthy organization. 14

San Diego Business Hall of Fame is a special evening that celebrates the accomplishments of remarkable members of the San Diego Business Community. At the 2009 event, JA Student Ambassadors placed leaves on the JA tree to symbolize past

and present laureates.

JA Bowl-A-Thon is an exciting event that gives companies the opportunity to give back to the community in a fun, unique way. As JA San Diego’s largest fundraiser, participants raise pledges and bowl together as a team to support our programs.

Despite these tumultuous economic times, 2009’s Bowl-A-Thon, “Big Top Bowl,” had 20 new companies join in on the fun and help us raise over $318,000 to support JA programming! With over 3,000 bowlers from more than 50 companies, we are so thankful to everyone that helped make this event a big success!
