NDSU AT A GLANCE

North Dakota State University has been in-strumental in North Dakota’s development for more than a century.

As the state’s fi rst land-grant university, it has a strong heritage of providing instruc on, research and public service to North Dakota, the region, the na on, and the interna onal commu-nity. With about 74,000 living alumni, NDSU has a well-de-served na onal reputa on for a commitment to excellence.

With humble beginnings, NDSU was estab-lished in 1890. President Horace E. Stockbridge and fi ve faculty members welcomed the fi rst class of 30 students who a ended a winter agricultural course. The construc on of historic Old Main was completed in 1892.

Today, the university educates more than 13,200 students and has 740 professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors and lecturers. NDSU off ers more than 100 baccalaureate majors, 44 doctoral programs, 59 master’s programs, an educa onal specialist degree and eight cer fi cate programs.

Instruc on is off ered through these academic units: College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources; College of Arts, Humani es

and Social Sciences; College of Business; College of Engineering and Architecture; College of Human Development and Educa on; College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Sciences; College of Science and Mathema cs; College of University Studies; and Col-

lege of Graduate and Interdisciplin-ary Studies.

The school’s educa onal op-portuni es a ract students from across the na on and around the world. During the fall of 2008, stu-dents and graduate students came

to NDSU from all 53 North Dakota coun es and 46 other states. NDSU’s more than 960 interna onal students are from 81 foreign countries.

The NDSU’s primary academic campus includes 42 square blocks and 102 university buildings, 11 non-NDSU buildings, nine leased buildings and seven leased spaces, with building, personal and outdoor property insured for a total value of $834 million. In all, NDSU is located on 18,746 acres of North Dakota land, which includes the main Agricultural Experi-ment Sta on at Fargo. There are 268 Agricultural Experiment Sta on buildings and storage facili es at the main sta on and eight research extension centers across the state, and 18,488 acres dedicated to agricultural research.

Dedicated to outreach eff orts, the NDSU Exten-sion Service conducts a rigorous educa on program in agriculture, human development, nutri on and youth and community development through its county, area and state staff . During the fi scal year ending September 2008, the Extension Service’s am-bi ous 4-H Club ac vi es, day camp and a er school programs involved more than 27,170 face-to-face contacts with North Dakota young people. A total of 7,086 youth are ac ve in organized 4-H Clubs. During the same period, the Extension Service had 536,614 face-to-face contacts with adult learners across the state.

Why the Bison?North Dakota State University’s athle c

teams have progressed from the “Farmers” in the 1890s to the “Aggies”

in the early 1900s, to “Bison,” North Dakota State’s current athle c symbol.

It was developed by head football coach Stan Borleske in 1919 because he and members of the football team didn’t

like being known as the Aggies. Borleske wanted a strong and fi erce mascot. The

Bison was a logical choice. The great animals once roamed the North Dakota

prairie in vast numbers, and over the years Bison athle c teams added an

addi onal name, the “Thundering Herd.”

Before coming to NDSU, Chapman was senior vice president and provost at Montana State University, Bozeman, where he also served as a professor of bi-ology. Among his responsi-bili es were a wide array of statewide ini a ves, includ-ing a system of academic and outreach programs at Montana’s two-year and

four-year campuses. Prior to joining Montana State in 1996, he was dean of the College of Natural Re-sources at Utah State University. From 1969 to 1983, he worked at the University of Maryland, College Park, advancing to head the Appalachian Environ-mental Laboratory. He also was a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1965 to 1967. Chapman earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate from Oregon State University, Corvallis. He lists 11 books and editor-ships, eight monographs, 31 book chapters and symposia proceedings, 67 journal publica ons and more than 100 reports and popular ar cles. He is ac ve in a number of organiza ons in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and is a member of the boards of directors of US Bank, Fargo/Cass County Economic Development Corp., NDSU Alumni As-socia on and the NDSU Research and Technology Park. He also is a trustee of the NDSU Development Founda on. Chapman is a fellow of the Explorer’s Club and the Ins tute of Biology, London. He is a member of the Wildlife Society, American Society of Mammalo-gists and American Philatelic Society. He also is an honorary member of the Species Survival Com-mission, which has headquarters in Switzerland. In 2000, he was invited to join the Cosmos Club, a private social club founded in 1878 in Washington, D.C., and dedicated to science, literature and art. Joseph and Gale Chapman have two daughters, Valerie and Jennifer.

Joseph A. Chapman has led North Dakota State University since June 1999, and under his ener-ge c and visionary leadership, the university has

transformed in a number of important measures. Student enrollment has grown each year of his tenure. Undergraduate students from around the region, the na on and the world have made NDSU their ins tu on of choice. The university also added numerous master’s programs, and the number of doctoral program off erings has more than doubled since 1999. Chapman also has energized the university’s research eff orts, broadening the por olio from less than $50 million in research expenditures to more than $100 million for the past several years. This is an important and recognized indicator of the caliber of work conducted. In fact, NDSU is listed in the top 100 research universi es in the country in several Na onal Science Founda on categories, and when ranked by research and development expenditures among 537 research universi es without a medical school, NDSU is 41st in the Na onal Science Founda- on report. He sought partnerships from the private sector to enable expansion of NDSU’s Research and Tech-nology Park, a catalyst for innova on in science and technology. The NDSU park is considered a model for success by partnering with private sector compa-nies to enhance the educa onal opportuni es and economic ac vity in the state and region. Also under his guidance, the university has transi oned to a Division I NCAA athle c program. The volleyball, men’s basketball and so ball teams all were Summit League champions and competed in their postseason tournaments in 2008-09. On behalf of North Dakota State University, Chapman has traveled extensively in the state and around the world, to enhance the connec ons vital to a successful university. Each summer Chapman leads a tour to various loca ons in the state called Conversa ons Across the Land, to listen to ci zens and share informa on about educa on and research at NDSU.

Dr. Joseph A. Chapman, President

When he came to North Dakota State University in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited a department surrounded

by a whirlwind of ques ons. In his fi rst year as the director of athle cs at North Dakota State, Taylor was asked to spearhead a comprehensive study and evalua on of the Bison athle c department. He has guided the athle cs program through the unpredictable waters of reclas-sifi ca on to NCAA Division I from Division II. One of most important pieces of the transi on was securing conference affi lia- ons for all 16 sports. The Bison are currently members of The Summit League, Mis-souri Valley Football Confer-ence and Western Wrestling Conference. Taylor also played an instrumental part of forming the Great West Football Conference in February 2004, an affi lia on that gave the Bison football program an immediate home in Division I. He served as chair of the coaches commi ee. Also on the reclassifi ca on checklist: fundrais-ing. Taylor spearheaded an increase in the Bison athle cs budget, which has more than doubled from $5 million in his fi rst year to almost $12.5 million for the 2008-09 season. He was recognized for his success by the Na onal Associa on of Collegiate Directors of Athlet-ics in June 2008. Taylor was one of 29 recipients of the AstroTurf AD of the Year award as the Football Championship Subdivision Central Region winner. A student assistant to the associate athle c director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, Taylor came to NDSU a er a 15-year s nt at Navy (1986-2001) as an administra ve assistant, assistant cket manager, cket manager, assistant athle c director for ckets and opera ons, and as-sociate athle c director. Taylor is a 1980 business management gradu-ate of Arizona State, and he received his master’s degree in sports administra on in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida. He worked in the cket offi ce at Southern Methodist University in 1985-86 directly before join-ing the Naval Academy and was in the private restau-rant business before that for fi ve years. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the fi ve-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell. Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.

Gene Taylor,Athletic Director

Lynn Dorn, Women’s Athletic Director

Enthusiasm, innova on and hard work are the cornerstones to Lynn Dorn’s remarkable 32-year record at North Dakota State University.

In Dorn’s tenure as the director of women’s athle cs, the Bison women’s teams have seven na onal tles, 62 North Central Conference tles, seven Summit League championships, 112 na onal appearances, fi ve conference All-Sport Trophies and one North Central Conference Cup to their credit. Three Bison compe tors have been named the Honda Broderick Division II Most Outstanding Female Athlete, fi ve received the NCC’s Stan Marshall Award and there have been 132 All-Americans in six sports since 1981. In the classroom, the student-athletes’ academic achievement mirrors their athle c excellence. Twenty-fi ve women have been selected for 40 CoSIDA Academic All-America® awards and 16 have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Dorn was named one of the fi ve most infl uen al people in Division II athle cs by College Sports magazine in 1995. She was one of seven administrators of the year in 2002 by the Na onal Associaton of Collegiate Women Athle c Administrators and was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches

Associa on Administrator of the Year in 1997. She sees her role as a facilitator who empowers coaches to use their individual skills while working within a framework of common goals and themes. Dorn received her bachelor’s degree from Bemidji State in 1972 and her master’s degree in physical educa on from Minnesota in 1977.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE

Now in its 28th year as an NCAA Division I athle cs conference, The Summit League con nues its renaissance and ascent both on the play-ing fi eld and in the classroom. Originally formed in 1982 as the Associa on of Mid-Con nent Universi es and later known as the Mid-Con nent Conference, The Summit League is in its third year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athle c performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the crea on of a new image and the addi on of three member ins tu ons. The 10 Summit League member ins tu ons include Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State Univer-sity, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invita on to join the league with full membership during the 2011-12 academic year and will begin as an associate member for swimming and diving in 2009-10. The league has one other associate member, Eastern Illinois University, which competes in swimming and diving. Centenary College will leave the league a er the 2010-11 season. These member ins tu ons pride themselves on providing quality athle c, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, so ball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automa c bids to the NCAA tournament in all applicable sports. Since its incep on in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the na onal stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the fi rst round of the NCAA men’s basket-

A decade later, Valparaiso captured the na on’s a en on when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA fi rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, the Oral Roberts baseball pro-gram fi nished the 2004 campaign with a na onal ranking and became the fi rst Summit League school to reach the NCAA Super Regionals in 2006. The league has produced four Olympic athletes, four NCAA champi-ons and several All-Americans in the sports of track and fi eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several dra choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball fi rst round picks, a pair of NBA fi rst rounders and one WNBA selec on. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two- me all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athle cs.
