THE 2007 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

2008 LMU Softball www.lmunet.edu/athletics/softball

2008 brings a new look to the LMU softball team. Losing 4foursenior starters and one All-American, the LadyRailsplitters look to reload with young freshmen. Even though most of the squad will be young there is strong experi-ence returning at key positions. Jessica Locker, Sara Henn and Amanda Wampler have all pitched and been successfulin the circle. Devin Sponseller has good experience behind the plate. With Sponseller at the plate, Alisa Burk atshortstop, Henn at third, Wampler at second and Locker at first the infield should be real solid this season. This is the first season that LMU will compete for the SAC title, and it won’t be easy. “There are great teams in this conference and it won’t be easy,” said LMU Head Coach Dan Burns. “Lenoir-Rhyneand Wingate will be the teams to beat. But I have great respect for all the others as well. There is not a weak team inthis conference.” LMU will play a 50-game schedule beginning with region games in early February and hopefully finishing with a SACChampionship in late April.

2008 LMU Softball www.lmunet.edu/athletics/softball

DOROTHY NEELY FIELDThe Dorothy Neely field has been thehome of the Lady Railsplitters since the1990 season.

The field complex seats approximately 350people in bleacher seats, sideline benchesand open areas for lawn chairs. The di-mensions are 200 feet down the lines and215 to center field. The playing surfaceis Bermuda grass. Batting cages and abullpen are adjacent to the field, andteams can also use the baseball fieldcages and bullpen if needed.

There is also a press box / storage facil-ity along the right infield base path whichincludes space for scoreboard and sta-tistical operations as well as equipmentstorage and a changing room.

The dugouts are enclosed, and there are safety fences in the front to help protect players, coaches andstaff from stray balls.Lights were installed in 2003, and several night games are scheduled each year.

The Lady Railsplitters first played on the field on March 28, 1990, when they hosted former TVAC foe MilliganCollege. LMU won both games by scores of 4-3 and 8-5. Prior to that, home games were played on a part ofthe old LMU farm (the playing site is now included in the Harrogate City Park.) The field was officiallydedicated on May 12, 1990.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 asa living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophyand ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in thefall of 1863 when the President was meeting withGeneral Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operationsin and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennesseearea. The President expressed his appreciation for theloyalty that the people of the region had shown to theUnion during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the areaon the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if youcome out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hopethat you may, I want you to do something for thesepeople who have been shut out from the world all theseyears. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and betweenus we may do them the justice they deserve. Pleaseremember, and if God is good to us we may be able tospeak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, butO.O. Howard (who also was a founder of HowardUniversity) never forgot those words. In 1895, hetraveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small

academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wifeEllen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myersand several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of AbrahamLincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs andcurriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of AbrahamLincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; loveand respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; anappreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university offeringover 30 undergraduate areas of study and five graduate degrees and programs. It is also hometo Tennessee’s newest medical school, the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, whichadmitted its first class in Fall 2007. LMU had a Fall 2007 enrollment of 3,254 students andemployed 96 faculty members at the main campus and 11 extended-campus sites. The maincampus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of thelargest Lincoln collections in the country.
