ProjectDevelop a logo for Cal Poly’s Zero Waste campaign.
DescriptionThe development of the logo required the design to incorporate sustainability and a mention of Cal Poly. The two logos provide two representations of sustainability in the leaf iconography as well as the four colored circles signifying four elements: earth, wind, fire, and water.

DescriptionFor the limited edition book design, I chose to design a book for Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. The concept of my special limited edition three-volume book series of Jane Eyre: An Autobiography was to incorporate details from a 19th century Victorian era book. I wanted to bring in elements of printing during Brontë’s era as well as mixing it with modern printing and publishing tech-nologies, and bring a sense of nostalgia to the final pieces.

Study Habits Worth Picking Up
It’s a new school year, and summer has
just come to a sad end. After the three-
month long hiatus from school, it was
probably hard re-applying yourself once
again to the humdrum life of geeking
it out and getting good grades, and
maybe, it’s your first year in college.
Studying for college isn’t the same
as studying for high school, nor is it as
easy—well, sometimes. It is probably
even harder to really apply yourself
when your parents are on your back
about graduating in four years and it’s
barely your first quarter! Well, here are
several tips that Nook’s special research
team has compiled to help you tackle
and conquer the world of collegiate
academics. Studying for school will
never be the same.
Our thiry study tips are just a start to
help you with actually getting the most
out of the limited time you have during
the day. The best way to excel in your
studies is to discover how you learn best
and apply it to how you study, and even
when you study.
Depending on your schedule, these
tips should be able to help you with

Life as a college student is always full of things to plan for and assign-
ments and projects to complete. There is no end to any task, and some
cases, days don’t seem to end at all. On top of that, being a college student
requires you to be learn how to become independent, in other words,
you’ve been kicked out of the house and you are being forced to grow up
much quicker than you would really want to.
School, projects, work, balancing activities with studying, managing
your fi nances, and even fi nding time to do laundry and cooking meals for
yourself, it’s enough to drive anyone crazy! Life of a college student has
never been more demanding nor time constricted than now.
In this issue, many of the contributing authors have compiled articles
that focus on helping you manage your time better, as well as provide
structure to your life, especially when it comes to fi nances and getting
ready for the right job, making the quick meal, and even maximizing your
living spaces.
Cutting corners in organizing your life won’t help you in the long run,
because in the end, everything needs to be done, and generally there’s
a due date. So with that in mind, hopefully Nook can help get you on
track with the know-how’s of a student life that is simplifi ed for the busy
student, and allow for more structure to balance the chaos of being a
college student.
Independence comes with a price, but it shouldn’t cost you your valu-
able study time and keep you from enjoying your college years. Take a
dive into independent living, and get something worthwhile from it. I’m
sure you won’t regret at least picking up a few choice recipes, or tips on
getting that job, or even living on a budget. There’s plenty of things to do
as a college student, and many more things to spend your hard-earned
money on, but don’t take these years lightly. These years will be your
make-it or break-it moment before you enter the real world, and worries
about good credit and even your future after college. Spend your time
wisely and effi ciently.
Editor’s Note
“Independence comes with a price, but it shouldn’t cost you your valuable
study time, and keep you from enjoying
your college years.”

Appearances Can Be Deceiving...
The shimmering surface of a lake,
glowing in the evening sun, may
inspire us with its beauty. Yet, hidden
beneath its surface may be an ugly
blanket of toxic sludge. On the
other hand, the ocean surface that
is marred by unsightly patches of
oil spilled by a tanker, may conceal
within its depths animal life of
great beauty. Can it be that we often
misjudge what we see because we
merely skim the surface and fail to
penetrate the depth of matters? Yes,
the truth is often hidden from us.
That’s why we are warned by Aesop
(620-560 B.C.) that “Appearances
often are deceiving.” We are also
cautioned by Christ who taught, “Do
not judge by appearances, but judge
with right judgment.” (John 7:24)
Why is it that we often fail to
use right judgment and arrive at
false conclusions? The reasons are
many. First, before any information
arrives at our intellect for analysis
it must pass through our preconcep-
tions, assumptions, beliefs, opin-
ions, prejudices, selective memory,
and feelings. Also, our body not only
collects data, but influences it. For
example, our hormones and blood
sugar levels can affect our moods,
thinking, attitude, and behavior. In
other words, we see what we feel
instead of feeling what we see. Our
mind is also a master of deception.
For instance, we may judge someone
to be intellectually inferior to us
simply because they share another
opinion.
No, things are not always
what they appear to be. The ‘drunk’
sleeping on the sidewalk across the
street may be an exhausted construc-

From Frogs to PrincesIn a matter of seconds, an opinion
of a stranger, friend, and even foe
could be altered by experiences and

Appearances have been known to
cause people to pre-judge another
person because of their differences,
but what can a person know about
another just based on appearances?
Here we take a look at some simple
steps to look beyond appearances
and into the heart of the matter.

Arthur Golden
Arthur Golden was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was educated at Harvard College, where he received a degree in art history, specializing in Japanese art. In 1980 he earned an m.a. in Japanese history from Columbia University, where he also learned Mandarin Chinese. Following a summer at Beijing University, he worked in Tokyo, and, after returning to the United States, earned an m.a. in English from Boston University. He resides in Brookline, Massachusetts, with his wife and two children.
Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl’s virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. Sayuri’s story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Through her eyes, we see the deca-dent heart of Gion—the geisha district of Kyoto—with its marvelous teahouses and theaters, narrow back alleys, ornate temples, and artists’ streets. And we witness her trans-formation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimo-no, elaborate makeup and hair; competing with a jealous rival for men’s solicitude and the money that goes with it. But as World War II erupts and the geisha houses are forced to close, Sayuri, with little money and even less food, must reinvent herself all over again to find a rare kind of freedom on her own terms. Memoirs of a Geisha is a book of nuance and vivid metaphor, of memo-rable characters rendered with humor and pathos. And though the story is rich with detail and a vast knowledge of history, it is the transparent, seductive voice of Sayuri that the reader remembers.

The New Yorker, John Burnham Schwartz“ There is a particular pleasure to be found in reading a novel that is sui generis and yet is imbued with subtle shadings of its literary predecessors: this is a high-wire act. To protect himself against falling, the author has brought to his task a prodigious trove of research...and an uncanny degree of empathy for...a woman usually regarded in the West as either caricature or museum piece....Rarely has a world so closed and foreign been evoked with such natural assurance.”
Ann Beattie“ Wonderful, involving, intelligent, fascinating, and almost Dickensian in the way the characters inhabit the landscape, and the landscape permeates the characters. It’s a unique, beautifully written book.”
Pico Iyer“ I still can’t quite believe that an American male can so seamlessly enter the soul of a Japanese woman, and catch her world, its textures, its hopes, and its sinuous patter with such perfection. Memoirs of a Geisha evokes all the delicate steel of Kyoto’s geisha culture with such uncanny fidelity that, after you’ve finished, you feel as if you’ve entered not just another world, but an extraordinary and foreign heart.”
Julia Blackburn“ Sayuri tells her story with such gentle courtesy and determination that you are quickly brought under the spell of her character. She takes you by the hand and leads you into a world that is both formal and intimate, a world that I had only before glimpsed in the fleeting and beautiful images of traditional Japanese ink painting...Memoirs of a Geisha is a wonderful achievement.”
Geraldine Brooks“ A haunting tale of a hidden world that could hold an audience spellbound through many an evening in a lantern-lit teahouse.”

The How-To Guide ‹ 1
The How-To Guide ‹ 7
Why the Guide? With the desktop publishing era in full swing, it is essential
for self made designers to understand the processes and work-
flows involved in printing and publishing their work, whether
to make the job run easier and smoother for the prepress staff
and printers handling their work, or in some cases, because the
work must be self published by it’s creator.
However, we feel that many of these self-made designers lack
the basic knowledge necessary for this to happen. Design for
Success: the How-to Guide steers users through the indispens-
able steps for success in printing, web authoring, and packaging
design. Workflows in each category follow a basic, generalized
format that is applicable to most works in that particular media.
Though explanations under the three media forms are broad,
with simple graphics, tips and tricks, the information will en-
able readers to produce a product of professional quality with
relative ease.
