Solution Manager at Pick n Pay
Solution Manager History
• Probably quite typical of most customers:
– Installed the base system
– Used primarily for patches and software downloads
– Setup Earlywatch reports
– Upgraded several times and tinkered with different functions unsuccessfully
Adoption Difficulties
• Solution Manager was seen as a Jack of all trades but master of none – A helpdesk but not a helpdesk
– Good for Projects but not a Project Management tool
– Great for monitoring SAP but limited otherwise
– etc.
• A difficult business case in a challenging business environment
• A lot of information available but not that easy to access
• Requires focussed effort and goals to unlock the value
What Changed?
• Large growth in SAP systems – 109 LPARs and instances to manage
– Landscape is far more complex and includes MI, EWM, IDW, SCM, CRM, Business Objects, BPC
• Large growth in data volumes – ERP is 20 Tb
– BI is 18 Tb
• Functionality in 7.1 is a step change improvement and provides several key benefits – End user experience monitoring
– CIO Dashboard and much greater visibility of information
– Extension of monitoring of the non-sap systems
Approach
• Used the Run SAP Assessment Service to determine the scope and priorities
• Engaged with a specialist implementation partner
• Focussed work packages that could deliver immediate value – Technical Monitoring and CIO Cockpit
– End User Experience Monitoring
– Business Process Monitoring
– Data Volume Management
– Custom Development Management Cockpit
• Identified future opportunities – Test Management
– CHARM
Approach Cont.
• Chose to do a fresh installation of 7.1 – Large amount of experimentation in the previous installations
– The SLD was running on the existing Solman installation
– Did not have confidence in the existing system
• Worked on the basis of a ‘First Output’ for each work package – Proved the functionality to our needs
– Further rollout would be done by the PnP team

In Conclusion
• 7.1 is a vast improvement on previous versions
• Standard functionality is and content is rich and useful
• The system is much easier to use and access to information is greatly improved
• New functionality and monitoring of non-sap systems is very promising
• It still takes focus, work and effort to achieve
success (as do all things)
