NSCS OverviewThe National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit honor society for first- and second-year college students who are in the top 20 percent of their class and have a minimum GPA of 3.4. NSCS has 625,000 members in 233 chapters across all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

NSCS provides more undergraduate scholarship dollars than any other honor society nationwide.

NSCS values scholarship, leadership and service. These values form the three pillars of the Society. Integrity is the base for these pillars because it is the foundation of all academic and professional excellence, and is crucial for NSCS as an organization and for its members.

Below are the five ways in which NSCS seeks to improve members’ lives:

Rewarding Members’ Academic Success: NSCS values academic excellence. That’s why the organization helps students bear the financial burden of education through more than $250,000 in scholarships every year. These range from $1,000 Merit Awards awarded to 50 new members every year, to two $5,000 Scholar Abroad scholarships for study abroad, as well as scholarships for graduate school and textbooks.

Fulfilling members’ Leadership Potential: NSCS offers members the opportunities to take on leadership roles within the NSCS chapter at their university. These leadership roles include chapter President, Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Vice President of Public Relations. Members can also gain leadership experience through the National Leadership Council, a group of NSCS members who represent members’ needs to the national office. Finally, NSCS provides its members with leadership training at the NSCS Leadership Summit.

Promoting a Culture of Service: NSCS’ regional managers work with chapters to plan service initiatives on their campuses. On a national level NSCS has created the Planning for College Success Program (PFCS). PFCS is NSCS’ signature mentoring program for middle school students, wherein chapters mentor local middle school students and encourage them to plan for college.

Upholding Integrity: Integrity is the foundation of NSCS’ values. That’s why in 2007, NSCS launched the Integrity initiative to reinforce the importance of academic and personal integrity in every NSCS member’s life. The initiative culminated in I Stand for Integrity Day on April 9, when NSCS chapters across the country commemorated the importance of integrity with panel discussions, banner signings and social events.

Helping Members to Find a Fulfilling Career: NSCS also provides members with career and graduate school opportunities. NSCS’ corporate and graduate scholar partners, whose fields range from finance to education and international service, regularly reach out to members for internships, jobs and graduate school. In addition, NSCS holds an annual Convention, where members can learn about major-specific careers, general job-seeking skills, and practice networking with dozens of employers and graduate schools at an Exhibitor Fair and receptions.

“NSCS gives you a chance to become the best you. Through local and national opportunities, you can challenge yourself to become a leader, scholar or public servant - or all three.” - Sarah Keller, Founding NSCS President, The George Washington

NSCS Summit 2008

NSCS Summit 2008 in Orlando, Florida, included several workshops to help NSCS officers improve their chapter and develop their leadership potential. Workshops included:

Officer 101: This workshop focused on helping officers learn more about their role and the potential for the role.

Running Successful Meetings: This workshop was designed to help officers increase member participation on campus and educate them on successful meeting management.

How to Be an Effective Leader: This workshop included a keynote speech by Brenda Bertrand as well as a break-out session for officers to take a leadership evaluation test and assess their strengths and weaknesses.

Planning for College Success: This workshop focused on how to run this mentoring program successfully on campus (more on this initiative in the next section). The workshop was designed for both chapters with up-and-coming programs and those with established programs.

Page 24: 2007-2008 Annual Report

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars - p. 24

Promoting a Culture of ServicePlanning for College Success:Statistically, nearly one in five high school sophomores has not started to explore their post-secondary options. Moreover, while 84% of high school students consider a college degree to be important, less than half feel that high school has prepared them for college.

To combat this issue, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) developed the Planning for College Success (PFCS) program – now the Society’s signature service initiative – in 1995. The reasoning behind PFCS was that academically successful college students are ideally suited to prepare other students for college success.

Partnering with juniors and seniors in high school, NSCS chapters in the greater Washington, D.C. area held one-on-one mentoring sessions on preparing academically, financially, and mentally for their college experience.

Since its inception, PFCS mentoring programs have quickly gained popularity, with 90 chapters holding over 800 mentoring visits during the 2006-2007 academic year. One of the most successful PFCS programs is run by the NSCS chapter at The University of Kansas, where an

average of 125 members mentor students at 19 local K-12 schools. There, PFCS has even become its own registered student organization, with financial support from the student government.

Since the Society’s partnership with America’s Promise in 1997, the focus of Planning for College Success was shifted from high school to middle school. Studies at the time showed that children are unlikely to attend college if they are not committed to doing so by the ninth grade, leading NSCS to further focus the program on seventh-grade students. While PFCS has since expanded to high school and even elementary school students, over a third of partnerships are with middle schools. Moreover, many chapters partner with nonprofits such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Boys and Girls Club, where they work primarily with students in grades 6-8.

In 1999, NSCS added March to College Day to the PFCS program as a way of inspiring students to attend college by letting them experience it firsthand. On March to College Day, middle school students go on campus tours, eat lunch with their NSCS hosts, and attend presentations on how to prepare for college. Originally designated as March 1, NSCS chapters now hold March to College Days throughout the month of March, and in some cases throughout the year: in 2007, Montana State University held four March to College Days, at which over 70 volunteers and 40 professors brought the college experience to over 500 students total.

Page 25: 2007-2008 Annual Report

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars - p. 24 The National Society of Collegiate Scholars - p. 25

PFCS has seen significant growth in recent years: in 2006, 130 chapters participated in the initiative, which has since expanded to include assemblies, in addition to mentoring and March to College Day. Additionally, 80% of chapters began the spring 2008 semester with a Vice President of PFCS.

Here are some highlights of chapter programs:

The University of California, Los Angeles held a March to College Day in 2008 that included 12 students from a local middle school. The middle-schoolers got a tour of the UCLA dorms, attended lectures and ate in the cafeteria.

Spelman College had a March to College Day Event that included nearly 100 high-school students from Douglass High School and a dozen NSCS members.

Ball State University’s NSCS chapter partnered with College Mentors for Kids, a local organization that provides mentorship to first-to-fourth grade students. NSCS members were partnered with students and guided them on studying hard, and aiming high.

Chapter highlights:

Truman State University held a Princess Project event in October 2007. They invited members and the campus community to donate gently-used formal dresses, which were then sold at reduced prices (from $5-$20) to girls at the local high school. This event was well-supported by the school administration because many girls in Kirksville cannot afford to purchase expensive prom dresses. The chapter raised $120 for Victim Support Services, a local shelter for battered women.

Southern California NSCS Chapters participated in the AIDS Walk in Los Angeles on October 21, 2007. They raised $600 and donated it in NSCS’ name. Participating chapters included the University of California—Riverside, Irvine and Los Angeles as well as University of Southern California.

University of Iowa’s NSCS chapter collaborated with the Preemie Project on its holiday bake sale and helped the organization raise nearly $4,000. The Project comforts premature infants and their families at The University of Iowa Children’s Hospital by giving gifts of hats, booties and blankets that have been handcrafted by a group of local and national volunteers.

Georgetown Chapter Held Panel Discussion on Academic, Personal and Professional Integrity The NSCS chapter at Georgetown University held its first Integrity panel in honor of “I Stand for Integrity Day.” The chapter hosted the event in coordination with the University Honor Council and registered 214 guests. In addition to students, Georgetown’s President, Provost of Academic Affairs and Chair of the Honor Council were present. The collaboration with the University Honor Council provided unique perspectives on integrity-related issues at Georgetown.

DePauw University’s chapter “adopted” a local family in need. The family lost its home in a fire. The chapter raised more than $655 for gift cards to Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Pizza Hut.

“NSCS is an organization that creates a lifetime of opportunities.” - Ciara Ginyard, Peace Corps volunteer, NSCS alum

“NSCS forms an instant springboard that helps connect you with other interesting people on campus.” - Andrew Hamilton, NSCS alum,The George Washington University

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars - p. 27

Upholding IntegrityNSCS’ Integrity Initiative:

NSCS’ integrity initiative was inspired by a national ethics project created by The Association of College Honor Societies, which serves as an accrediting agency for honor societies. NSCS decided to honor this initiative by creating:

I Stand for Integrity Day: April 9. On this day, NSCS chapters across the country held banner signings and panel discussions on integrity, among other events.

The Inspire Integrity Awards: The Awards are the only student-nominated faculty awards program in the nation that recognize professors who instill integrity in their students. These awards are presented to full-time university faculty who have, through their lessons and actions, made a significant impact on the lives of their students and instilled a high degree of personal and academic integrity.

The national recipient of the 2007-2008 Awards was Dr. Linda Bolton, associate professor of English at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Bolton’s classes focus on writers of “difference”, including but not limited to race, culture, language, disability and illness. In her classes she incorporates community service and volunteering as a way to help students better identify with the subjects they read about. As the national recipient, she will receive a $3,000 award, as well as a $2,500 donation toward the University of Iowa’s general scholarship fund.

Integrity Scholarships: These $1,000 scholarships were awarded to three students who confronted a challenge to their integrity and chose to respond in an ethical manner.

The 2008 recipients were:

Natasha LaBelle, University of California, Berkeley Lauren Hunt, Rice University Jozef Zelenak, The University of Kansas

Princeton University and several others. In addition to recruiting, several of them sponsor scholarships - GEICO, for example, sponsors four $5,000 graduate school scholarships.

Helping Students Find a Fulfilling CareerNSCS has developed many partnerships with potential employers and graduate schools to facilitate connections between these partners and NSCS members. These partnerships help members create networks and help members to achieve their career goals.

Partners want to get in touch with the best students in America—and they do so through NSCS.

NSCS’ recruitment partners, include Deloitte & Touche, Teach For America, Ernst & Young Princeton University and several others. In addition to recruiting, several of them sponsor scholarships - GEICO, for example, sponsors four $5,000 graduate school scholarships.

Online members also have exclusive access to both The National Society of Collegiate Scholars’ Job Guide and the Salary Wizard. The NSCS Job Guide contains the latest techniques and tips for resumes, cover letters, networking, interviews and more. Once members have landed the job, they may also find information about business etiquette, time management, and teamwork styles.

The Salary Wizard is the ultimate salary negotiation tool. By tapping into Salary Wizard, members will learn the national average salaries, adjusted by location, for positions to which they are applying. They may also obtain a Personal Salary Preview and Report, which includes a detailed analysis of how their personal traits canaffect income prospects.
