Grounding

ODU Grounding

The system uses a Shielded CAT-5 cable to interconnect the ODU/IDU.

However, this shielding does not provide a good Lightning Discharge path, since it can not tolerate the high Lightning

Current surges.

In order to provide an alternate Lightning Discharge path, the ODU/Antenna Grounding posts should be connected to a

Ground Point by a 10 AWG short copper wire, as per NEC 810-21

IDU Grounding

The IDU’s grounding post should be connected to the internal Ground point, merely for Safety and ESD protection

reasons.

External Lightning Surge Suppressors

In order to minimize direct Lightning damages, an external well grounded CAT-5 Lightning Protector should be mounted

outside the building, located as near as possible to the entrance of the CAT-5 ODU-IDU interconnection cable.

3-rd party protectors may be used, e.g. Motorola’s 300SS, Hyperlink’s HGLN-CAT5 or Sixnet’s SP-ETH-2

Internal ESD Protection circuits

The system is designed to meet the ETSI / FCC /Aus/NZ / CSA EMC and Safety requirements

In order to fulfill these requirements, the system’s Telecom lines at the ODU/IDU are Transformer-isolated and include

internal ESD (Electro-Static-Discharge) Protection circuits

 Proper lightning discharge path

One of the major factors for RMAs is lack of grounding!

Tower Collocation (ODUs are installed in crowded tower):

Use alternate/adjacent channels

At least 3 meters separation between co-located units

Use alternate polarization for adjacent channel units

Reduce Tx Power to the minimum based on LBC

Alternate frequency bands

Installing the LP on the Tower (ODU End)

Before commencing with the installation, please read carefully the

following instructions:

Basic installation requires mounting and grounding 2 Lightening

Protection Units; One on the tower very close to the ODU and

another outside of the site/facility where the IDU is installed.

Instructions:

1. Mount the LP on the tower as close as possible to the ODU using the mounting ring

2. Ground the LP Unit using the GND screw

3. Connect the short CAT5e cable to the IDU connector on the ODU

4. Connect the other side of the cable to the LP Unit

5. Tighten the cable gland cap firmly

6. Connect the CAT-5e cable that goes to the IDU to the other side of the LP Unit.

7. Tighten the cable gland cap firmly8. Run the CAT-5e cable towards the IDU

Installing the LP next to the IDU/PoE

Instructions:

9. Mount the 2nd LP Unit as close as possible to the inlet hole of the site/facility where the IDU/PoE is installed10. Use the Wall Mounting Unit to firmly secure the LP Unit on the site/facility wall

11. Ground the LP Unit using the GND screw

12. Remove the cap of the cable gland that is facing the ODU, make sure you remove the rubber sealing tube as

well

13. Plug into the half open cable gland the CAT-5e cable coming from the ODU

14. Tighten the cable gland cap firmly

15. Connect the short CAT-5e cable (provided in kit) to the half open cable gland of the LP and the other end

16. Connect the other end of the short CAT-5e cable to the IDU/PoE
