Four Essential Systems In OneAdvanceTrac® with RSC – AdvanceTrac® is anelectronic stability enhancement system thatimproves control on slippery surfaces like icy, gravelor rain-soaked roads. RSC, a class-exclusive feature, detects potential rollover-type situations and quicklyengages AdvanceTrac® to help keep your tires firmlyplanted on the ground. There are four majorcomponents of this integrated system: an Anti-lockBrake System, Traction Control, Yaw Control and aVehicle-Roll Motion Sensor. It automatically utilizesthese elements in varying combinations to help giveyou optimum control at all times.

Confident Stopping PowerAnti-lock Brake System (ABS) – This featureregulates brake pressure to help prevent wheel-lockup and skidding when you're stopping thevehicle.

Amazing GripTraction Control – When the system detects a lossof traction, it quickly responds by reducing enginepower when necessary and selectively applyingbrake force to the slipping wheel while transferringpower to the opposite wheel. It helps give you amore seamless and controlled driving experience.

Responsive HandlingYaw Control – This component helps you avoidskidding and fishtailing. When understeer (whichleads to skidding) or oversteer (which leads tofishtailing) is detected, the system selectivelyapplies individual brakes and modifies enginepower to maximize control.

Added StabilityVehicle-Roll Motion Sensor – RSC utilizes agyroscopic sensor to help monitor vehicle rollmotion approximately 150 times per second. If itdetects the possibility of a rollover, the systemautomatically engages AdvanceTrac® to help keepall four wheels safely on the ground.

Freedom Of ChoiceOn/Off Switch – For added security, AdvanceTrac®

with RSC is automatically enabled each time thevehicle is started. However, this instrument panelbutton allows you to turn the system off during low-speed operation, when you may want the wheels tospin freely to help your tires “dig” for traction.

Rear Wheel Sensor Units

RSC Sensing Components• A steering wheel angle sensor is located in the

steering column, and is used to determine driveroversteer or understeer

• Individual Rear Wheel Speed Sensors providewheel speed feedback to the EHCU

• An Inertial Module Unit (IMU) is floor-mounted underthe passenger seat inside the vehicle. A mountinglocator on the unit assures proper positioning. TheIMU senses vehicle motion and electronically controls the EHCU, which is an integral part of thebraking system

• Relocation of the IMU is not recommended

MDPV = Medium Duty Passenger Vehicle

Definition from 40 CFR 86, Subpart A (July 1, 2000):

The MDPV category was created for the Interim Tier 2 and Tier 2 vehicle emissions standards. Thiscategory was specifically designed to help bring passenger vehicles (such as large sport utility vehiclesand passenger vans) over 8,500 pounds GVWR into the Tier 2 program.

MDPVs are defined as any complete heavy-duty vehicles less than 10,000 pounds GVWR designedprimarily for transportation of persons, including conversion vans (i.e., vans which are intended to beconverted to vans used primarily for transporting people).

This does not include vehicles that have 1) a capacity of more than 12 persons total, or 2) are designed toaccommodate more than 9 persons seated rearward of the drivers seat, or 3) have a cargo box (i.e., apickup-bed or box) of six feet or more in interior length. Prior to Tier 2 standards, these vehicles wouldhave been regulated as light heavy-duty trucks.

HEX CHROME ELIMINATIONPRODUCT FEATURES

2006 Model Year Hexavalent Chromium Elimination

Ford Motor Company’s Restricted Substance Management Standard (RSMS) WSS-M99P9999-A1 prohibitsthe use of motor vehicle parts coated with hexavalent chromium (hex chrome) for all vehicles producedbeginning with the 2006 Model Year. This requirement applies worldwide.

Hexavalent chromium had been used as a corrosion resistant coating on many steel, aluminum, zinc andmagnesium motor vehicle parts. These coatings appeared in a number of colors including iridescent yellows, clear, olive green and black. Motor vehicle parts with hexavalent chromium coatings included:

• Approximately 2500 small fasteners (screws, clips, nuts, bolts)

• Approximately 100 medium-sized steel parts (V-belt pulleys, brackets, levers)

• Approximately 50 larger parts (radiators, brake lines, body panels and wheel rims)

Chrome plating, which results in the familiar reflective surface, does not deposit hexavalent chromium.

Since hexavalent chromium is a surface coating, the replacement of hexavalent chromium with another anti-corrosion coating changes the frictional characteristics of the component. This is particularly important forfasteners or surfaces of parts that a fastener contacts. With the replacement of hexavalent chromium, fastener torques have been tested and validated in the Ford Fastener Lab.

NOTE: Revised torque requirements have been released by engineering and are contained in theFord Service Manuals. Not all torques have changed, but many installations require differentfastener torques. It is very important that the specified fastener torque be used to ensure properretention.
