    July 2006

    Introduction

It is the Korean people's struggle to realize freedom from foreign influences and

democracy from military dictatorship that saved the nation in recent history. But, their

ardent wish was met with coldblooded power of the gun and sword by a longterm

dictatorship, and the selfexistence of the nation got ignored by foreign powers.

To resist dictatorship and to restore our true sovereign authority from external powers,

a great number of our sons and daughters had to willingly sacrifice their own lives onto

the altar of our motherland. Families "still alive" who were simple citizens had to come

out from their schools, factories, and streets cherishing empty echoes of their lost ones.

To continue the fight of their beloved for the independence of this land,

democratization, reunification of two Koreas, and labor equality, they stood against

    harsh dictatorship and cruel suppression.

Now, efforts to do so became our lives because we couldn't simply bury our beloved

(own flesh and blood) deep in our hearts. We had to live such a life to revive them to

life, in the form of struggles to reach the great cause. Therefore, our lost flesh and blood

    still existed inside us.

It results in adding a little help to the gradual development of social democracy, whichconfirms the justice of their sublime death that we wish to fulfill.

We will continue to make our best efforts, as we have demonstrated resolute volition of

holding fights during the 422 days onthestreet demonstration in 1988 as well as the 422

days fight of 1998, to realize the society our flesh and blood pictured lastly in which

    true democracy prevails.

We know that this is the only way we must go.

We, the bereaved families, declare our new departure to restore the honorable

reputation of the deceased and hereby establish justice of their democratization

    movements in front of history.

    Yugahyeop's Background and History

early 80's with those families whose members were incarcerated and tortured by the

authorities in the process of the democratization movement, resulting thus to the

    History

The place where the truce talks were held during the Korean War was originally

located at 1km north of the present place. It consisted of four straw roofed houses, two

temporary buildings used as the meeting place, and three temporary barracks at that

    time.

The name, Panmunjom, originated from the story that when a place for the truce talks

was moved to this place, they marked the name of Panmunjom which was a small

store(Jom) located near the place for the truce talks in order for the representatives of

China to find the place easily. After the 1,076 times of the truce talks for 2 years and 19

days since a preparation meeting started, at last the agreement was signed among U.N.

forces, North Korean Army, and Chinese Army on 27 July 1953.

The Panmunjom is located at the west end from the 155 miles truce line and has

proved the partition of a nation. This area is located away from 62km northwest of

Seoul and 215km south of Pyongyang that is capital city of North Korea. Officially this

area is called as the 'Joint Security Area', and is a special area that is out of

administrative control of South and North Korea

    Introduction

Panmunjom is only the heritage of the Cold War. But it is the place based on the co-

existence of one Korea by cooperation with South and North Korea. It would be the

center of the world if the internet of South and North Korea worked together in every

fields till there were no limits of the Korean peninsula. If, by Panmunjom were a web

site, and South Korea frequently trades with North Korea in the fields of man power and

products, it is possible to recover national same quality on the bases of it. South and

North Korea are not two but one. They are one nation. If they met many times, they

could establish a security blanket over themselves. And then, the mind set of"Unification" could take effect.

The Farmers revolution sparked by the Gobu Farmers' uprising in January 1894

The Farmers revolution sparked by the Gobu Farmers' uprising in January 1894 was

the first ever farmers' revolution on a nationwide scale in Korea's history, started by the

    5

waking up of the public awareness. It was an opportunity to open a modern society in

    Korea.

The first farmers' uprising was an antifeudal resistance movement searching for the

freedom and people's rights while the second one was an antiforeign movement for the

national independence and selfreliance to drive the Japanese army out of the Korean

Peninsular. The Farmers' Revolution was launched to overturn the feudal system of the

society, which was based on the domination and subordination relationship and to build

a new social and economic system based on the principles of equality, freedom and self-

rule. Even though the revolution failed by the combined power of the conservative

noblemen class and the foreign force, its spirit has handed down to SavethePoor

movement and Yeonghakdang movement, farther down to the loyal troop

uprising/March 1 demonstration against the Japanese rule.

The Farmers' riot which started in Gobu sparked by the despotic ruling by the Gobu

governor Jo ByeongGap, escalated into the Farmers' Uprising under the slogan of

rescuing people from oppression and protecting the country. The movement was led by

Jeon BongJun and Son WhaJung in 1894. Gobu was a place of the largest rice

production and a concentration center for agricultural products.

In addition, it had rich seafood since it was located near the western coast.

This means that feudal exploitation and economic evasion by Japan was more severehere than any other place in Joseon.

Jo ByeongGap, Gobu Governor at that time, exploited people using various methods in

addition to the widespread corrupt practices of utilizing three basic systems. One

example was the water tax that he collected on the excuse of building a Manseokbo. But

as the crop harvest was bad in 1893, over 40 farmers went to the Gobu Office to ask for

the reduction of water tax, Jo ByeongGap arrested some of the leaders for the reason

that they triggered goodnatured people to rise in an uprising.

People were just panicstricken by this and 20 or more including Jeon BongJun

gathered at the house of Song JunHo(Juksan Village at Singjunri, Gobu) and drew up a

plan to execute the corrupt officials including the Gobu Governor, Jo ByeongGap,

occupy Jeonju Castle and then move forward to Hanyang. But this plan was not

executed as planned because Jo ByeongGap, the first target of their attack, was

transferred to Iksan on November 30.

Then about five people in a row were appointed as the next Gobu Governor but all of

them failed to take the position due to the manipulation by Jo ByeongGap who wanted

to be transferred back to Gobu.

    July 2006

At last on January 9, 1894, Jo ByeongGap was appointed to Gogu Governor again to

bring misfortune himself. GAT night of January 10, 1894, farmers gathered at Yedong

Village led by the farmer's folk bands. After a long speech, ordered advance to the

Gobu Office by dividing the farmers into two groups. With the bamboo spears that they

made, farmers occupied Gobu Office on January 11. But it was after Jo ByeongGap

disappeared already. Thousands of angry farmers broke the prison to set innocent people

free and opened the warehouse to get all the grain distributed to the nearby residents.

They demolished Manseokbo and took up a position around the Yedong Village,

building mud walls at Baeksan and appointing a newly governor, Park WonMyeong,

who took an aggressive appeasement policy and asked the farmers to disband promising

to correct the wrongdoings. Since farmers felt uneasy about the escalating uprisings,

Jeon BongJun was forced to order disbanding even though he also wanted to occupy the

    rice warehouse at Hamyeol.

It was at that time that An YongTae, a government official, came into Gobu with over

800 policemen, arrested innocent farmers and plundered everything. This earned bitter

grudge from the farmers and jeon BongJun who went to Mujang to organize his groups

again by persuading Son WhaJung who had the greatest force of Donghak at that time.

But the uprising was crushed by the intervention of the Japanese force. This area was

promoted to Jeongeupgun in 1897 and consolidated as part of Gobugun and Taeingun. When the independent movement started on March 1, 1919, demonstration calling for

liberation from the Japanese rule continued to spread into every corner of the country.

So by May of that year, 13 demonstrations were held in total.

    TIMF's Background

Tongyeong has the honor of providing a warm, beautiful and cheerful home for

festivities held in the honor of its extraordinarily talented son, a worldrenowned

composer Isang Yun. The city, however, is not only a proud homeland to Isang Yun, but

also a paradise its dwellers can take pride in. For one thing, its worldclass marina

attracts more boat enthusiasts than any other cities in Korea. With a big lodging

capacity, it is a busy destination for many vacationers during the summer. The

Tongyeong International Music Festival takes Tongyeong to greater heights as a world-

class music city. The music of Isang Yun was sadly confined to some chorus before May1999 when private groups put up the Tongyeong Cultural Foundation and the

    International Isang Yun Society.

The projects stirred interest waves in the region so great that news about them soon

spread nationwide, and as a result, even the Kumho Cultural Foundation and The

Korean Culture and Arts Foundation started receiving support for its cultural exchange

programs. In addition to the endorsement of the local and central governments, the

GoetheInstitut of Germany now shows enthusiasm for the Tongyeong International

Music Festival, while the Masan MBC has always pledged its support by providing

media promotion and assisting in the production of musical contents. With all these

financial and administrative elements in place, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and

the Gyeongsangnamdo Province join hands in offering the event to Korea and the

world. This year, the Festival will have a grand opening with a concert opera,

Geisterliebe composed by Isang Yun. Other major artists appearing in the program

include the New York Philharmonic, the State Symphony Capella of Russia, Mischa

Maisky & Haesun Paik, Chung Trio, Ahn Trio and many others. A number of Korean

and foreign public figures, journalists and media coverage teams also plan to visit

Tongyeong to witness this year's event.

Although Tongyeong is already a favored tourist attraction in the southern rim of the

Korean peninsula, the TIMF provides the city with a terrific opportunity to grow as the

center for musical activities in the East Asia in the twentyfirst century, just as movie

festivals have done for the city of Pusan and art festivals for Gwangju. Through the

festival the city will further benefit from cultural exchange with other regions of the

world and at the same time promote its tourist attractions, and ultimately make itself a

    worldclass music city.

    Tongyeong

    1. Tongyeong City is a suburban area in the southeast of Gyeongsangnamdo. It covers

the central and the southern parts of the Goseong peninsula with its 151 islands, 43 of

which are inhabited and 108 are uninhabited. The towns of Dosan and Gwangdo in the

north adjoin the mainland while Geoje City and the sea border the eastern side. The

west of the city faces Namhae County and the sea as the south looks out to the open sea.

    2. Mathematical position

Some of the major cities in the world on the same latitude as Tongyeong are Osaka in

Japan, Kaipeng in China, Los Angeles in America, and Tripoli in Lebanon.

    3. Geographical position

The isletdotted city of Tongyeong lies in the southwestern end of the Goseong

peninsula. Most of its land is covered with hills and mountains, making agriculture an unattractive

industry. In spite of this, Tongyeong tries to produce its own share of crops by practicing

dry field farming in the sloping hills.

Fishing, on the other hand, is a more lucrative business. The warm current of the East

Sea lends moderate temperature to the clean waters of its jagged coast where bountiful

harvests of fish and other marine products bless local fishermen. Tongyeong's fishing

industry, developed and improved over hundreds of years, is one of the most

progressive in Korea. The city is in fact called the center of the Korean fishing industry.

    4. Climate

All throughout the year, Tongyeong has an oceanic climate that is largely affected by

the warm current of the East Sea. A part of the black current, one of the biggest streams

of warm current in the world, runs through the Tongyeong seas and flows towards the

East sea. Thanks to the black current, Tongyeong has the highest temperature in the

inland of Korea which has an annual average temperature of 14 . The city also enjoys

the lowest annual average temperature difference between the hottest and the coldest

months. The average temperature in the coldest month of January is about 2.5 while

    ISANG YUN

A composer cannot view the world in which he lives with indifference. Human

suffering, oppression, injustice... all that comes to me in my thoughts. Where there is

pain, where there is injustice, I want to have a say in it through my music." Isang Yun,

    1983

Isang Yun's oeuvre rests upon the flexible, vibrant tone of his native country's

traditional music. Yet in the integration of dodecaphony and "developing variation" into

his own "maintone technique", Yun's music is also rooted in the European tradition. His

composing manner blends eastern and western elements into a unique personal style,

into the art of gliding transition in the spirit of Tao.

Isang Yun was born on September 17, 1917 near the southeastern seaport Tongyeong,

at a time when the Korean peninsula was under Japanese occupation. Yun took part in

the resistance against Japan, and in 1943, he was imprisoned and tortured. After

receiving the Seoul City Culture Award in 1955, he was able to study in Paris and Berlin

from 1956 to 1959. In Berlin he studied with former Schonbergdisciple Josef Rufer,

learning how to compose 'with twelve tones related only to one another'. From

Germany, Yun was able to establish contact with and was a part of the international

    avantgarde.

His Buddhistic oratorio Om mani padme hum met with broad resonance in 1965; the

premiere of the orchestral Reak at the Donaueschingen Festival in 1966 lead to his

international breakthrough. In 1967 Yun was abducted form Berlin to Seoul by the

Korean secret police, and was tortured and charged with high treason. In a political

show trial he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance, but released in

1969 after international protests. In 1971 he became a German citizen. Yun taught

composition at the Hochschule der Kunste Berlin from 1970 to 1985, from 1974 on as a

full professor. His oeuvre includes more than a hundred works, among them four operas

and a number of instrumental concertos. In the 1980s he composed a series of five

major, interrelated symphonies; during that period Yun also developed a new tone in his

chamber works, which are characterized by the striving for harmony and peace. At the

same time, reconciliation on the Korean peninsula was his political goal.

Isang Yun died on November 3, 1995 in Berlin, and was interred in a grave of honor

provided by the City Senate. He was a member of the Hamburg and Berlin Academies

of the Arts and of the European Academy of the Arts and Sciences in Salzburg, an

honorary member of the International Society of Contemporary Music. He also held an

honorary doctorate from the University of Tubingen, and was the recipient of theGoethe Medal of the Goethe Institute in Munich and the Distinguished Service Cross of

the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

At night On October 19, 1948, the 14th foot regiment of the National Defense Guard

the former Korean Army, stationed in Yeosu, disobeyed to the order of the government

until the end of Korean War.

Much evidence demonstrated that U.S. Army was involved in suppressing the riot. The

U.S. Korean Military Advisory Group held actual command of the Korean Army when

the Korean Army put down the riot. It is of no doubt that the insurrection might not be

so quickly repressed without the support and command of U.S. Army.

So many innocent civilians were killed without trial at the school playgrounds or on

the near hills. Almost ten thousand were massacred. Their corpses were abandoned here

and there. Successive military governments have prohibited anyone during the past 50

years even to ask about who died, who killed, and why they have to be killed.

The YosuSuncheon uprising was a disaster to the regional community. When the 14th

regiment came in, the rightwingers, police, and their families were killed by the leftists.

When the government army and police recovered their control of this area and hunted

down the leftists and their collaborators, many people were cruelly executed. People

were torn apart due to suspicion and hatred. The democratic social movement has been

completely cut out. Such barbarous days gave rise to a more serious result on the

national basis. Of all things, the Yeosusuncheon Uprising provided the Lee government

and its military successors with the slogan of antiCommunism, and made it possible for

their brutal dictatorships to be prolonged.

The village was in the territory of Mahan in the Samhan era, and the site of Pajiseong

(Paji Casle) during the Baekje Dynasty. The village site of Nagan-gun in the Joseondynasty still remains just as it was hundreds of years ago. The site has been designated

as the historical site No. 302.

Sand walls were built to guard the village from the Japanese army in 1397, and they

were rebuilt in stone 300 years later. The 1.41km long and 4m high stone wall still

stands firmly today, surrounding three villages. The folk village of 108 households

within the stone walls, is a living guide to the folklore and history of our ancestors.

The village is not just a display as those of Yongin and Jeju, and also is not a noble

village like that in Andong. In this village you can experience the real life of the

    Unju Temple

    Located in 26km southwest of Hwasun-eup. It stands at the east of Cheontaesan;

Gaecheonsa Temple at the west. It is believed that Unjusa and thousand Buddhas and

sarira stupas were built in the end of the Unified Silla Period by monk Doseon.

According to topology, he thought this temple needed a sail and shipmaster because it

shaped like a ship. He, therefore, built thousand Buddhas and sarira stupas. The name of

'Thousand Buddhas and Thousand sarira stupas' originated from it.

Unfortunately, there are no written records proving it but

. We can only know the origin of existing stone

Buddhas and sarira stupas from this book.

A number of stone Buddhas and sarira stupas inside the temple are not elaborate, even

rough. It is estimated that they were created in mid Goryeo Dynasty, 12C, over a long

time. Historic site No. 312. Excavated four times, since 1984. Stone shrine for Buddha

dismantled and was restored, a multi-story round sarira stupa was repaired, and Ilju

Gate and Bojegak were newly constructed. The road to the lying Buddha also was taken

    for in 1997.

21 stone sarira stupas and 93 stone Buddhas are preserved now.

Nine-story Stone sarira stupa : It is said that the shape of the temple was like ship and

nine-story stone sarira stupa played a role of sail. The highest sarira stupa in Unjusa.

The flower pattern on its side is very unique.

Multi-story Round Stone sarira stupa : It is a round-shaped sarira stupa from bottom to

top. It produces some curiosity of how many stories it were first. It is also well-known

as Yeonhwa sarira stupa or Deuk sarira stupa. Treasure No. 789.

Lying Buddha : It is said that the monk Doseon planned to erect thousand Buddhas and

sarira stupas in a day to open the new world, but when work nearly finished a young

monk who did not want to work shouted "cackle" as he was a hen. Because stone

workers who heard it thought it dawned, they went up to the ski and this Buddha,

consequently, became lying. It is believed that if it stands, this place will becomeKorea's capital.
