President
It is after yet another season of considerable
achievement that I write my third report to the
Hockey WA membership as your President. After
another season of change on and off the field it gives
me great pleasure to focus on some key positives that
the Association has achieved in the past year.
The progress that has been made by your Board, the
Senior Management and staff of Hockey WA since
I last reported to you has been very pleasing but
it is important to note that it is simply a step in a
continuing period of establishing the Association’s
history.
The changes to the elite competition structure whilst
having the potential to be quite disruptive, were
implemented and managed with a minimum of fuss
and operated effectively through the commitment
and dedication of all involved from the administrators
and officials right through to the players themselves.
The transfer of ownership of our state’s premier hockey facility - The Perth Hockey Stadium to Hockey WA sees a significant change to the operations of your Association.
I would like to thank Steve Wood – Chairman of the
Perth Hockey Stadium Council and his committee
together with Hockey WA staff for managing this
transition with full responsibility being assumed by
Hockey WA on December , 2006.
One of the most significant challenges the Association
has faced this year is the production of a submission
to Hockey Australia for WA to retain the location of
the Hockey Australia High Performance Program (the
AIS). Through a working group under the direction
and guidance of neil McKerracher QC and made up
of representatives from the Hockey WA Board and our
partners the State Government, the Department of
Sport & Recreation and WAIS we have prepared and
submitted a document of a significantly high and
professional standard.
Hockey WA enjoyed yet another solid year financially,
with another significant improvement on the bottom
line. This important financial result would not have
been possible without the diligence of the Finance
Committee led by Tony leeflang, Chief executive
Officer – linda Hamersley and Finance Manager Kim
Rodgers.

Whilst our performances “on the field” have not been
as fruitful as previous years we can still be very proud
of our WA teams across the Board. Pride of place goes
to the SmokeFree WA Diamonds who were once again
AHl Champions for 2006. Given that this showing was
strongly supported by our other under age women’s
teams with the U2’s finishing 2nd, the U8’s taking
out the flag and the U5’s finishing 4th it augers well
for the future of women’s hockey in this State.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the success
of our West Australian representatives at national
level. Congratulations to all who were selected for the
development and senior squads.
It is extremely important for us to maintain our
momentum and we continue to rely heavily on our
resource network – especially our volunteers.
Achieving success and growth will not be possible
without our ability to attract and retain the excellent
range of people we currently are lucky to have – those
who are paid and those who offer their services in a
voluntary capacity.
I continue to be amazed by the commitment of
everyone in hockey to the support and advancement
of our sport. To Hockey WA members and our corporate
partners I would like to extend a sincere thank you.
Your support over the years has been exceptional and
it is with your energy that we will continue to build on
the strong foundation we have laid in recent times.
Special thanks to our new competition sponsors
– Wizard Home loans. The support and enthusiasm
you have shown our sport this year has been terrific
and I look forward to a long, increasing and mutually
beneficial relationship.
Hockey in our state enjoys a strong and distinguished
place in the history books and I would particularly like
to acknowledge our life members (who were joined
this year by a very deserving Mike Kinsella) for your
continued support for not only our sport but of me
personally.
To all our Board Members for your ongoing
commitment and passion through what has been
another challenging year, your efforts in what are
ostensibly volunteer roles are truly inspiring and on
behalf of the sport I sincerely thank you.
On behalf of the Board and Hockey WA, we thank our
very hard working staff, led most progressively by
Hockey WA Chief executive Officer – linda Hamersley
The staff ’s efforts throughout the year have again
been outstanding. We are indeed fortunate that our
sport is managed by such a dedicated, committed and
caring group. I would also like to formally recognize
the long term contribution made by Jean Schonberg and
wish her every success in the future.
From the outset of this report I spoke of the pride we
can have in our achievements. Just as importantly we
can all look forward to the future with confidence.
More importantly Western Australia is recognised by
our sporting peers both within and outside hockey
as the leading hockey state because of what we can
achieve on the field but also because of the way in
which we conduct our business.
In closing, I would like to take the opportunity to wish
all those connected to our hockey community a safe
and prosperous “off season” and I look with eagerness
to 2007.
Yours in hockey

As 2006 draws to a close and I reflect on the business
of the year, I provide the following report to the
Hockey WA membership.
Strategic Plan: At the January Board Retreat a review
of our plan took place with new objectives included
for 2006. Our advisory committees and staff have
worked together to achieve those objectives; the
second year of our three year plan.
Changes to the first grade competition, management
of the Perth Hockey Stadium and the submission
to retain the Hockey Australia High Performance
Program are three of the “big ticket” projects that
were successfully undertaken this year and are
reported separately in this and the elite Competitions
Committee report.
Partnerships: Hockey WA is committed to ensuring
relationships with our partners are operating at
an optimum level. The state government, through
Healthway and the Department of Sport and
Recreation, remains our major partner and we
continue to prosper as a State Sporting Association
through their ongoing support and commitment to
hockey in Western Australia.
During 2006 we worked closely with WAIS as they were a key contributor for our submission to retain the Hockey Australia High Performance Program.
Our WAIS nTC coaches have continued to provide
support to our state teams and have worked closely
with the national teams with both coaches seconded
by Hockey Australia for various international team
tours as support or assistant coaches.
Our relationship with the other State Hockey
Associations and Hockey Australia is strong and we
continue to look for opportunities to work together
on collective purchasing, information sharing and
providing support as required.
Finance: A full set of audited financial statements
will be presented to Council at the Reconvened AGM.
The statements will again reflect that we continue to
improve our cash reserves with a slightly larger than
budgeted surplus, thanks mainly to our increased
sponsorship and the close scrutiny provided to our
accounts by both the Finance Manager and Finance
Officer. Tony leeflang commenced in the role of
Convenor of the Finance Committee this year and
provided great support to the Finance Department.
Sponsorship: We are fortunate to have successful
partnerships with both continuing and new sponsors.
Through our Profile & Branding Manager we increased
our sponsorship income by 60% from 2005. The
metropolitan competition welcomed Wizard Home
loans to our sponsorship portfolio and enjoyed a
wonderful year with them, resulting in a commitment
to continue the relationship into 2007. Thanks go to
all our other sponsors being CBH Group, Gryphon,
Hockey Action, Chestnut Grove Wines, Cadbury
Schweppes, Kombat Clothing, Rising Stars and
Underwater Contracting services.
Perth Hockey Stadium: Hockey WA took over the
operational management of the stadium in anticipation
of the transfer of ownership on December 2006.
We managed this change by implementing a new
organisational structure and created an Operations
Department that oversees the activities of the Stadium,
our events and competition. During this transitional
year the Operations staff have been updating
processes and implementing policies. A strategic plan
initiative to conduct a facility management forum
was undertaken providing information to a range of
hockey facility owners. I believe we are in a strong
position to maximise the ownership of the stadium
upon the transfer in December.
Hockey Australia High Performance Program: All
states were given the opportunity to tender to host
the Hockey Australia High Performance Program from
January 2009. A Working Group was formed and
spent a considerable amount of time researching the
performance of the program and why it had been
so successful whilst housed in Perth. With the full
support of the State Government, in particular the
Annual Report 2006.indd 5 20/11/2006 4:48:22 PM

Premier and Minister for Sport and Recreation,
Hockey WA tendered to retain the program in
Perth. Our submission offers innovative initiatives
to ensure that while the program remains in Perth
it has the best opportunity to remain successful; to
stay ahead of the international hockey world and
is provided with the best sport science. I believe
we are in a strong position to retain the program
and I would like to acknowledge the work that
neil McKerracher QC provided as Chairman of the
Working Group.
Staff: From a budgeting perspective, staff are our
biggest single line item, and equally our biggest
asset. The staff have again strived to provide the
quality of customer service to our stake holders
that is expected and to provide the administrative
support to the advisory committees to allow access
to competitions and championships for the hockey
community, both metropolitan and regional.
With the organisational restructure three new staff
joined the association: Barb Jenkins – Operations
Manager, Janelle leiper – Operations Assistant and
Kate Main – Profile & Branding Manager. After more
than 4 years with the association, Jean Schonberg
– executive Assistant is leaving and I would like to
take this opportunity to acknowledge the role Jean
has played in those years and the support she has
provided to both myself, the Board, committees she
has worked with and the staff.
Thank You: On behalf of the administration, our
thanks go to all the volunteers who work together
to make hockey the great sport it is. Without the
support of the volunteers in the clubs, working
with our state teams, involved on committees and
the board our job would be difficult and we truly
appreciate the time, effort and dedication that they
provide to the administration.
In closing, I would like to single out and thank
our President, Ceri Writer for her leadership of the
organisation and the support she provides me, and
to the seven board members that work in unison
to ensure our sport is provided with best practice
governance and strategic direction. It is a pleasure
to work with such a positive and hard-working
board of directors.
I look forward to the commencement of the 2007
season and all the challenges the year will bring.
Linda HamersleyChief Executive Officer
develoPment
I would like to thank the
elite Programs Coordinator
Alison Burge, Officiating and
Development Officer Sam
Calder, and Hook in2 Hockey
Community Officer Alistair Park
for their contribution and effort
throughout the year. Also thanks to the large group
of volunteers whether on committees or individuals
involved in a specific project. Volunteers remain this
department’s most valuable resource.
The Hockey WA Metropolitan Junior Recruitment
Program, in its second full year of operation, was run
jointly by Alistair and Sam, and again proved very
successful for those clubs choosing to be involved.
There are now 4 clubs (up from 8 in 2005) involved
and participation in the program grew by 75%. This
helped deliver growth in Minkey numbers for the
second consecutive year in the metropolitan area
with continued scope for improvement.
The Hook in2 Hockey component of the program
was also conducted by most major country centres.
Hockey WA provided support so that clubs could
provide further clinics to attract children involved
in the schools program. It attracted 487 country
participants, with Kalgoorlie the biggest single
program with about 200 participants.

The metropolitan senior competition review continued
during the year with a number of new initiatives
ready for implementation in the 2007 season. These
include aligning the women’s structure with the
men’s, a more flexible promotion and relegation
system, merging of the C and 2B competitions, and
more stringent alignment of elite turf teams in the
elite turf competition. Ongoing review will determine
if the original objectives are being met through these
changes.
There were thirty state teams representing WA in
national championships throughout Australia during
2006. This required approximately sixty volunteer
coaches and managers, 00 volunteer selectors, and
almost 500 players requiring selection, uniforms,
flights and accommodation. Alison had the daunting
task of coordinating all these activities and tasks
with support from the Indoor, Veterans and High
Performance and Coaching Committee.
It was a ground breaking year for officiating with the State Officiating Program implemented for the first time state wide.
Developed by international umpire and umpire coach
Don Prior, this program now provides a pathway and
resource with convenient accessibility for dedicated
umpires and player umpires alike to improve their
knowledge and competency. The challenge remains
to promote this program effectively to motivate more
clubs and individuals to take part.
Umpiring appointments were allocated on-line by
panel umpires this year in all but Wizard Home loans
division games and the method was a great success.
Hockey WA has been actively working with Hockey
Australia for a number of years to develop a new
junior recruitment game that is safe, and appealing
to a broader cross-section of young people of varying
sporting ability. The result has been the introduction
of Rookey which has been show cased at a number of
events in WA throughout the year, generating strong
interest. The game will be formally incorporated into
the metropolitan junior recruitment program next
year, and will be expanded into country regions in
the near future when the modified equipment is more
readily available.
A new resource for juniors playing full field hockey for
the first time was developed and titled “How to Play
Hockey”. It was distributed free to all junior players
within our coordinated development programs state
wide, with additional copies available for purchase.
Sponsorship has been secured to continue this free
distribution in future years.
Coordinated programs supported by Development
Officers were again conducted in Geraldton, narrogin,
Peel, South West, and Albany focusing on the
development of players, coaches and officials, and
promotion of the Smarter than Smoking message. In
addition to this, efforts continued to establish junior
hockey in Broome, and the Development Manager
also visited Kalgoorlie to promote and assist with
their Hook in2 Hockey program.
Knowledge of metropolitan participation trends
continued to improve in 2006 with more accurate data
entry into Hockeynet by clubs and this department’s
use of the research capabilities available within it.
Our Hockeynet member database research was
supplemented by several member surveys and
also involvement in the Hockey Australia annual
census. efforts were also made to get regional
associations to use the Hockeynet database
and this focus needs to continue in 2007.

oPerAtions
With several staffing changes and
some re-structuring to create an
Operations Department, responsible
for all competitions and events,
and the management of the Perth
Hockey Stadium, it was a busy start
to the season - there were several
learning curves being mastered at once by new and
existing staff.
nonetheless, staff members took to their respective
tasks with vigour, and managed to have an international
event (Canadian Women’s team v Hockeyroos), a WAIS
v Malaysian Women’s series and a couple of AHl home
game weekends under their belt before the start of
the winter season.
The 2006 season presented some interesting early
challenges, such as the time frames for nominations,
fixtures, and umpire allocations, the equitable
distribution of training time at the stadium and
management of the software system for booking
and invoicing turf time (the latter two tasks being
incorporated into the Operations Department after
previously being part of the Perth Hockey Stadium
organisation).
This season was four weeks shorter than 2005, with
only 8 weeks of competition. For the Wizard Home
loans Cup teams, this meant that they did not play
two full rounds before the finals. However, it appears
that in all grades, players and coaches alike valued the
shorter season and went into the finals weeks fresh
and ready for battle. The senior competition this year
focused on trying to achieve a home and away style
of fixturing and this seems to have been well-received
at the club level. efforts continue to move all grades
towards nine teams, to allow a bye weekend and make
the umpiring equation a little more manageable. The
senior grades commenced in late April, with junior
games starting three weeks later. It is anticipated that
the 2007 season will commence in mid-April, after the
AHl Men’s Final Week, which Hockey WA will host in
late March.
Hockeynet was again used this year to fixture all
grades and to upload results to the Hockeynet
website which has a direct link on the Hockey WA
home page. It was also used by all clubs this year to
input team lists and record results. While there were
some clubs which diligently entered results, others
needed a bit of prompting to ensure the data was up
to date. Training was provided for those that required
it, and there was always helpful advice available for
new or novice users. Hopefully, as more users become
proficient with the process, Hockeynet will prove to
be an accurate and helpful tool for all members of the
Annual Report 2006.indd 8 20/11/2006 4:48:38 PM
Page 9
hockey community. When used effectively, it can
certainly provide efficient and timely advice on
results, protests and disputes as well as providing
valuable statistical information to teams and
clubs. Particularly heading into finals weeks, team
managers and coaches have found the information
on the number of games played by each player to
be a lot easier to manage than a manual system.
The 2006 season incorporated a general bye
weekend, and juniors had a break over the July
school holidays which allowed us to run the Smarter
than Smoking U/5 Regional Championship and
the U/3 and U/5 State Championships.
Along with the regular season games, the
customary State Championships from U/3s
through to U/7s, Country Championships for men
and women and a two-week international series
against China’s Women’s team were conducted. A
very successful Minkey Carnival was also held at Perth
Hockey Stadium and the number of teams involved
was nearly double previous nominations. To cap off
the year, Hockey WA hosted the SmokeFree Men’s
Australian Veteran’s Championship with 62 teams in
age groups from Over 40 to Over 65 and WA pleasingly
finished with excellent results across the board.
On the facility front, an audit by Operations
Department staff of the grounds being used for
fixtures helped to develop a better picture of the
standard of grounds throughout the metropolitan
area. Of particular concern was the standard of field
marking, the safety of goals and some inconsistency
of the facilities available at grounds (toilets, canteen,
first aid support) and these should be a focus for clubs
wishing to host games in 2007.
Also, at the end of 2006, Perth Hockey Stadium Council
formally dissolved, and Hockey WA has taken on the
management of the Perth Hockey Stadium, with a
PHS Committee reporting to Hockey WA Board from
December 2006.
The stadium underwent some interesting changes
during the year, with the laying of the new nylon turf
on Turf in December 2005, and re-decorating of the
bar area and the re-naming to the “Champions’ Bar”.
The new bar was officially opened on 22 April and
the 2006 inductees were welcomed and their photos
added to the many who grace the wall above the bar.
Above and beyond the general maintenance required
such as repair and replacement of field lighting
systems and sprinklers, servicing of equipment and
upkeep of the facility, we have changed the watering
system to improve water supply, upgraded some
electrical distribution boards, and upgraded security.
The Operations Department wishes to thank all of the
casual staff, committee members and event volunteers
who worked so hard throughout the year to help us
achieve our goals. We really appreciate the effort of
the volunteers who make our lives a little easier, and
who provide us with a strong and vital connection
to the hockey community to receive feedback and
advice.
The number of participants in hockey remained steady
this year, despite the extra competition from sports
such as soccer and AFl, which had bumper years on
the back of the Socceroos’ World Cup success and that
of the WA-based teams in the AFl competition.
In the face of these challenges and the added pressures of busier lifestyles and changing attitudes to organised sport, we are proud to have maintained our participant base.
All in all, there have been a number of significant
changes in 2006 and we look forward to more in
the new Year, with the implementation of work
commenced in 2006 on the competition re-structure,
rules review and refinements to the home and away
fixture model. We also look forward to hosting two
home rounds of the AHl in 2007 as well as the AHl
Men’s Final Week in March.

senior Committee
The 2006 Senior Committee welcomed several new
members who came with a broad understanding
of grass roots hockey played by the great hockey
community. Peter Churack, Kim Jones, Adam Scott
with the continued service of Bev ewen and the end
of the season induction of Peter McGough formed
the Committee. These new faces injected greater
enthusiasm than in the past and it was also refreshing
to see Hockey WA Board Member, Ann Prior actively
participate and provide great guidance.
This positive tone allowed for effective decision
making from the outset when we were required to
assist Hockey WA staff deal with team nominations
for the 2006 season.
With the season under way, the primary focus shifted
to finalising the new competition model for the 2007
season. The guiding principles were based on recent
surveyed research and were designed to shape a new
competition model with the following features:
A three-tier model with the options of 00% turf,
turf/grass combination, and 00% grass thus
catering for the three types of players identified
in the research – elite competition players, regular
social players and irregular social players.

nine team grades for both men and women’s
competition (excluding ‘elite’ grades).
Identical competition structures for men and
women.
Ability to provide opportunities for players to
participate in european carnival style events on
the ‘hockey free’ weekends.
Capacity to develop a promotion and relegation
system that has greater flexibility to ensure the
quality of the grades is maintained in the future
This process required a great deal of consultation
with all committee members throughout the season
beyond the attendance of monthly meetings. I can
only commend all members for being able to digest
the wealth of information and provide varying views
and opinion that assisted Development Manager,
Grant Mitton, to develop a model from a broader
perspective.
looking forward to 2007 we envisage there will
be more challenges ahead as the new competition
model will take some time to bed down, especially
with greater radical change occurring in the women’s
competition. Additionally, an overhaul of the rules
governing competitions is required and there is
still the ongoing desire to improve the standard
and attendance of umpiring and the amendment of
unsociable playing times.
I would like to thank all of the Senior Committee
members for volunteering their time and hope that
all the current members will return in 2007 with the
addition of new members from other clubs.
The highest accolade goes to Staff liaison Damien
Todorovic for his energy which was never questioned,
faultless preparation and clear direction. The efforts
of Grant Mitton must also be highlighted. The task
of formulating the foundations of the competitions
model has been an exhaustive process. It has been
difficult to present the most ideal model with so many
stake holders to consider.
I am confident we have developed a model for a competition that will see playing numbers return to hockey, promote a positive inter club culture and allow for all clubs to provide the opportunity for players to enjoy their hockey on a variety of different playing levels.

Junior Committee
The 2006 Junior Committee worked with a great deal of resolve and purpose to ensure that junior boys and girls grades offered fun, appropriate competition and development to hockey players of all ages and levels.
Some outstanding hockey was on show with many
of the more talented and committed junior hockey
players gaining selection in regional and/or State
Teams.
Grading and ground allocation continue to draw
a lot of feedback from Clubs. This is not surprising,
however, as the pressure mounts by more and more
Clubs to acquire A grade junior status the Committee
asks that Clubs adopt a realistic assessment of how
the relative strengths of Clubs has and is changing.
The grading process concentrated in setting up 8
team competitions in all A grades for Under 3, 5
and 7 age divisions. The rationale behind this is that
it encourages a stronger division and it allows all
teams in A grade to play each other twice. Clearly it
is often quite hard to separate bottom ranked teams
in A grade from the top A Reserve grade or B grade
sides.
In 2006 the committee endorsed a Hockey WA position
with turf allocation for juniors which saw more turf
games being allocated to grades other than A grade
– particularly at Under 3, 5 and 7 levels. This was
aided enormously with the Joondalup turf coming
back on line and the addition of the Melville turf for
junior fixturing.
Feedback from two junior coordinators meetings
during the season continues to be extremely
important and will focus the committee on:
• further strengthening the grading process
maintaining a fixturing process which provides
turf access to as many grades as possible.
To assist Clubs in planning for 2007 – the relative
strength of Club teams and the 2006 finish of
Club teams above and/or below a team within an
age division will continue to be a very important
consideration.
I wish to acknowledge the excellent work of so many
people involved in junior hockey at Club level – junior
coordinators, coaches, managers and Club officials.
Your work is extremely important. Finally, to the
staff at Hockey WA led by linda Hamersley, including
Janelle leiper, Damien Todorovic and Grant Mitton a
very sincere thank you.

Committee
Previously called the elite Performance Committee,
it was restructured at the start of this year to
remove elite competition aspects, to free up
committee time and make better use of committee
member’s expertise to increase the focus on elite
coach development. Information gathering was
a major focus; and a formal planning process was
undertaken to identify our needs and weaknesses to
establish a foundation for a coordinated approach.
All processes surrounding state teams were reviewed in detail with new role descriptions for team officials developed and distributed; these included coach manager, physiotherapist and selector.
The committee also managed the implementation
of the above age state team selection policy with
a number of cases at U8 and U2 level requiring
consideration. There remain ongoing concerns
in respect of the rationale behind this policy,
with the committee believing that an education
process needs to be undertaken to attain greater
understanding, and more “buy in” from coaches
and selectors. This policy is intended to support
our objective to improve management of individual
elite player workloads and increase the size of our
talent pool, while at the same time ensure that
fast-tracking of suitable athletes is not overlooked.
Our efforts to increase support and development of
elite coaches were focused in three areas this year:
. Our elite coaches were invited to
attend international matches and post game
debriefs with Hockeyroos and Kookaburras
coaches Frank Murray and Barry Dancer. This
was a successful initiative, well supported by
coaches, and will be continued in the future.
2. A post-AHl debrief was also offered to our elite
coaches by Diamonds and Thundersticks coaches Colin
Brandis and Jason Duff. While it was not well supported,
we maintain that this initiative can be successful and
beneficial to elite coaches, and the lack of numbers may
have been caused by poor scheduling and promotion.
3. This committee also facilitated the process of
support and endorsement of DSR High Performance
Scholarship applicants Melissa Hall, Katrina Powell,
and Colin Brandis.
Tricia HeberleCommittee Convener
elite ComPetitions Committee
The elite Competitions Committee formed in late
2005 to provide direction in the overall planning and
management of the Wizard Home loans competitions
and their supporting and promoting grades – Men’s
State B, Men’s State 2A and Women’s State league
2. The Committee, chaired until early 2006 by Craig
Boyce and later by Colin Howell, trialled a number
of initiatives during the season each with varying
degrees of success.
The fixturing process began in late 2005 with meetings
between club presidents, committee representatives
and Hockey WA staff designed to ascertain the
varying preferences each club had. The result of these
meetings was a home and away system for clubs with
a home turf, and the majority of games played at a
time favoured by home teams to attract the most
support from their club based spectators.
Another fixturing initiative, an eighteen round men’s
season commencing after easter, was brought about
by the scheduling of the Commonwealth Games in
March and the Australian Hockey league in April and
May. This allowed all senior grades to commence on
the same weekend – something that has not occurred
in Western Australian hockey for some time.
The only drawback was that it was not until Round
Six that all national league players finally took to the
field – almost one third through the season. The new
format, however, allowed player friendly byes over
the Foundation Day long weekend and July school
holidays that seemed to be welcomed by players,
especially those with weary bodies and young
families.
The return of the national athletes brought with it
the Hockey Australia High Performance Program
Player Draft. In a first for the draft, national coach
Frank Murray consulted the women’s coaches and
allocated athletes to clubs based on the club’s and
player’s needs. Despite some initial apprehension,
the concept worked surprisingly well with all coaches
satisfied with their allocation.
Three clubs – Curtin Trinity Pirates, Victoria Park and
Wesley South Perth – experimented with ‘club days’
where a number of their teams played in the lead
up to the Wizard Home loans game at Perth Hockey
Stadium. Barblett Oval was used to host grass games
with team members gaining free entry to the Stadium
to watch their top sides in action. Catering facilities

were also available to the club allowing them to host
club functions in conjunction with the main game.
A number of ‘showcase’ games were also scattered
throughout the season. Supported by the Hockey
Australia High Performance Program, the Kookaburras
were on show against the scholarship athletes on two
Friday nights in June and July. The female athletes
also pitted their skills in a two game series against
the best the Wizard Home loans league had to offer
with games at Duracraft (Melville) and Perth Hockey
Stadiums. The exposure to top level hockey brought
the spectators out in droves with over 700 people in
attendance at some of the games.
Upon consultation with elite coaches, the Committee
made good progress on a couple of contentious rules
– the asterisk player and residential requirement
rules. With an aim to remove restrictions on players
intending to play for an extended period of time, the
Committee recommended that the latter rule be more
flexible to allow clubs to recruit long term players
from outside of Western Australia. To assist coaches
in selecting starting XI’s, a ‘core’ player rule has been
proposed for future seasons.
The regular season rounded off with a survey to all
players in the elite grades. The response rate was
above average and gave the Committee guidance on
some of the player needs.
The finals brought with it a new promotion and
relegation system in the men’s first division that
pitted the top two State B teams against the bottom
two Wizard Home loans Cup teams in a round robin
series. State B minor premiers, Suburban, gave their
more fancied counterparts a fright but eventually
succumbed in close games against Melville and Curtin
Trinity Pirates. The club support of the teams involved
in the series was tremendous with a buzz across Perth
Hockey Stadium for all of the games.
Finally, acknowledgement must go to all the
Committee Members who braved the cold mornings
for 7am meetings to discuss the issues of elite hockey.
Craig Boyce, Peter Freer, Hans Geers, Colin Howell,
Clover Maitland, Jon Petterson, Mark Pownall and
Kate Starre were ably assisted by nTC Coaches Jason
Duff and neil Hawgood over the last twelve months
to maximise opportunities to promote the elite
competitions.

Men’s Country Week in 2006 saw twenty-two grade
teams and eight veteran’s teams enjoy three days of
very good hockey and friendship. Congratulations
to the winners of all divisions and individuals who
won various awards. Thanks to Barry Scott and
Jan McKenzie for their time in the office over the
weekend. The decision by the committee to add the
entry fee to the nomination fee for country week was
very well received by both the women and men and
their Associations.
Thirty-four grade teams and fifteen veteran’s teams
competed for honours at Women’s Country Week.
It was a fantastic weekend with both the hockey
and weather at its best. Also congratulations to the
players who were selected in the All Stars and the
Under 2 teams. Thanks to Bev Blake, Denise Willcock
and Barb Semini for the time they spent managing
official duties.
The Australian Country Championships were held
in Bendigo Victoria from July 29 to August 8. The
women’s team improved one place – to third –on
last year and the men finished fourth. Both teams
played some very good hockey and improved as the
championships progressed. Special thanks to Bev
Blake and Glenn Willmott as team managers and to
Scott Shires as the Men’s coach.
Thanks to the committee members Barb Semini, Bev
Blake, Damian Della, Denise Willcock, Jan McKenzie,
Jenny Pitman, John Ward, Julie French and Marie
Cross for their commitment and support for our great
game of hockey in 2006.
A special thanks to the CBH Group as sponsors of
Country Week as well as thanks to the staff of Hockey
WA who support us in keeping our game alive.

The committee this year comprised Mal Skinner,
Catherine McFarlane, Bill Campbell, Maris Margetts,
Rob lawson, Tracey Hough, Peter Westlund, lorraine
Browning, Johnson Orr, Janelle leiper (staff ) and
myself.
The main focus for the year was the standardisation
of competitions and operations for the state sides for
both the men’s and women’s divisions and I believe we
are now well down the path to achieving this goal.
It was pleasing to see the expansion of the Women’s
midweek competition to 2 teams, which enabled the
competition to be split into three divisions for the
first time.
The men’s division had 7 teams competing in the
Saturday afternoon competition in age groups ranging
from over 40 to over 60. The midweek competition
continued to flourish and I am sure it played a big part
in the State’s success at the national Championships.
The Women held their Championships in Darwin, and
the Over 35 team is to be congratulated in winning
their division. The women were more successful than
at any previous Women’s national Championship.
The Men conducted their National Championship in Perth this year and what a success they were, both on and off the field.
Thanks must be given to those involved in organising
and running the SmokeFree WA Australian Veterans
Championship: Bill Campbell, Peter Westlund, Max
Viner, Shane Knapp, Steve Mcentee, Peter Fogels,
Graham napier, Bob Bowyer and to the numerous
volunteers who helped out each day.
On the field WA were successful in the Over 45, Over
50, Over 55 and Over 65 Divisions and were runners
up in the Over 40 Division
WA was also well represented in the Australian
teams selected at both the men’s and women’s
Championships. Congratulations to all who were
selected. In closing I would like to thank Janelle leiper
for her assistance on the committee this year.

indoor Committee
In any sport the most difficult thing to do is to win back to back titles. This feat clearly demonstrates a team’s commitment, desire and dedication to be the best.
last year the State Men’s Indoor Team did just this,
beating ACT in an exciting Grand Final in Wollongong
to win their second national indoor title in two years
and confirmed Western Australia as a dominant force
in indoor hockey.
While winning the title was reward enough, there was
an even greater reward for the players; eight of the
twelve players were named in the Australian national
Squad in preparation for the second World Cup in
Vienna in 2007.
The State Women have also continued to be a dominant
force; however they stumbled in the final furlong,
losing to Victoria in the semi-final. nevertheless their
continued success at the national Championships
resulted in five players being named in the Australian
national Squad.
This year will see the State Men attempt to win a
historic ‘hat trick’ of wins, when defending their title
in Canberra in December and with a bit of luck will
see the State Women finally shed the monkey and
progress through to their first final in recent years.
While this success is at the elite level it is important to
note the success at the grass roots level. This year will
see Western Australia enter a team in the Under 6s
invitational competition in Victoria. This is testament
to the ongoing commitment of everyone at Hockey
WA and demonstrates the ongoing momentum the
sport is gathering at all levels and age
groups across this State.
The Hockey WA 2005 Indoor
competition was closely contested
all season with University Hockey
Club winning the Men’s Division
and north Coast Raiders Hockey Club
winning the Women’s Division .
All grand finals were close contests
with University beating WASPS Hockey
Club 7-6 and north Coast Raiders
beating Willeton Hockey Club 3-2.
The Men’s First Division fairest and best
winner was Danny Brennan (Melville
Hockey Club) who also won the top goal scorer award.
The Women’s Division fairest and best player award
went to Tate napier (South Perth) who was also the
top goal scorer.
The Division two competition winners were north
Coast Raiders in the men’s competition beating
Fremantle Hockey Club (3-2) whilst Willeton defeated
north Coast Raiders (3-2) in the Women’s.
As Chairman of the Indoor Committee I would
sincerely like to thank the staff at Hockey WA for their
continued support and I wish all teams competing at
the national Championships this year every success.
Finally I would like to pass on my best wishes to the
following players who will be competing for a spot in
the Australian national Team to travel to Vienna for
the 2nd World Indoor Cup:

George Watts – Melville Hockey Club
Graham Watts – Melville Hockey Club
Andrew Hunt – Melville Hockey Club
Jason Black – YMCC Hockey

offiCiAting Committee
At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Officiating
Committee invited representatives from clubs, Hockey
WA umpires and officials, Hockey WA Staff and various
other Hockey WA committees to be involved in a
series of workshops to ascertain the needs and wants
of the hockey community in regards to officiating in
the future.
As a result of these workshops and a number of
follow up meetings, the Officiating Committee have
completed a strategic plan for officiating for the next
20 years. It covers many areas such as club based
umpiring, junior umpiring, recruitment & retention
and coaching to name a few and commences in
2007.
In 2006 the Officiating Committee incorporated club
based umpiring as part of its charter in an effort to
improve the general standard of umpiring and as a
recruiting ground for Hockey WA umpires and officials
in general. numerous State Officiating Program
(SOP) sessions were run at clubs and at Hockey WA
together with seminars to discuss clubs best practices
in relation to club umpire appointments, recruitment
of umpires, junior umpiring, etc.. This program is
designed to reach every player and the aim is for
all players to eventually pass the State Officiating
Program level .This will thus improve the standard
of umpiring across all grades of hockey and the
knowledge of the rules by senior and junior players,
parents, administrators and spectators.
The Officiating Committee has been restructured for
2007 and will include various portfolios including
coaching (2 members), junior umpiring (2 members),
recruitment, club based umpiring,
appointments, country umpiring, technical
and social & recognition. each portfolio
will have at least one elected member with
specific tasks, roles and responsibilities. They
will be supported by our full time Officiating
Officer at Hockey WA, Kelly Colgan, who has
recently taken up her appointment.
Officiating at times is a difficult task and
our many volunteer umpires and officials do
not receive the recognition they deserve;
however, thanks to our new sponsor, Hockey
Action, we were at least able to provide new
shirts and warm jackets to each Hockey WA
official this season. Our sincere thanks to
Hockey Action for their support.
We urge all players, coaches and club administrators to support our officials in the future as we cannot play the game without them. A small thank you after a game goes a long way to encouraging these volunteers to continue to volunteer their time.
Finally, thanks to all the Officiating
Committee for their work in 2006, especially
John nettleton, Cameron Scadding, Graham
napier, Barry O’Sullivan and Frank Brown
for their tireless work and I urge them all to
nominate again in 2007.

Women
The WAIS women’s program is getting closer to some of its proposed targets, with four athletes selected in the World Cup team which won a silver medal at the World Cup in Madrid and seven athletes selected in a national junior team to tour New Zealand in early December.
As well as this two athletes were selected for ‘Australia
A’ which played 3 games against the Chinese national
team in August. The WAIS squad also played three
games against China.
earlier in the year more athletes were exposed to
international competition with Canada and Malaysia
visiting Perth on the way to the Commonwealth
Games. Currently we are playing a series of games
against the Malaysian women’s team in Perth who
are preparing for the Asian games in December and
the Japanese under 8 team who are here playing
a series of four matches against a WA under 9 age
group. Playing against different styles and structures
is invaluable to the development of our athletes and
we have been very fortunate over the last 2 months
with visiting teams.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds were successful in
reaching the grand final of the Ausralian Hockey
league for the third successive time and came away
with a memorable victory in the final against the
Queensland Scorchers.
Our under 2 team again made the final but missed
the final victory hurdle whilst our under 8 State team
won the title in Adelaide.
The positives for our elite program are our ability to
be in the top two in the AHl, under 2s and under
8s and having good numbers selected in nationally
identified squads.
As we move forward with only 22 months until the
Olympics the goal will be to increase our number
of national representatives and thus also have good
odds for representation in the Olympic squad for
2008.

Bevan George, Aaron Hopkins and Michael Boyce
have been working hard with the Kookaburras in
the past 2 months. Michael was unlucky to sustain
a career threatening ankle injury in September 2005
that required surgery to rectify the damage to ankle
ligaments. However his comeback was strong and
indicative of his character and determination to
represent Australia. Aaron Hopkins performed well
at international tournaments and along with Bevan
George won a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in
Melbourne.
The big prize for WAIS hockey stars was the opportunity
to play at the World Cup in Monchengladbach
Germany. The three athletes were all selected in an 8
man squad that was set a huge challenge. The team
lost the services of co-captain Matthew Wells on the
eve of the tournament and also Grant Schubert who
damaged a knee ligament. Bevan George headed up
the performance of the WAIS contingent with some
outstanding performances including two goals in a
round match against India. The Kooka’s made it to the
final and took an early lead only to run out of steam
and take Silver.
Other WAIS athletes that have had notable performances
include, Jason Vuletich and Fergus Kavanagh who
were both named in the national development
squad. Ian Burcher and Jono Charlesworth earned
the opportunity to travel with the AIS team and push
for Selection in the Australian squads for 2007. In
addition to this Kiel Brown a former QAS athlete made
the move to WAIS. Kiel is a hard working defensive
mid fielder, who will
add value to the WAIS
environment and is
a current Australian
development squad
member.
The WA U2 team
performed below
standard and the
team produced
only one athlete to
contribute to the
national program.
Tom edwards will earn
the opportunity to
represent Australia at
the Australian Youth
Olympic Festival in
January 2007.
A prep squad has been added to the WAIS program
for well performing younger athletes giving them
the opportunity to train with the senior athletes. The
players are on three month squad memberships that
allow them to access some of the services that are
normally reserved for more senior athletes.
The program is narrowing its focus towards Beijing and the athletes will be undergoing greater individual scrutiny throughout this period to ensure they are all doing what is necessary to maximise their selection potential.
Strength and conditioning coach Geish Hori has
been working tirelessly with the athletes to increase
their strength, power and speed. A lot of testing
and application has seen significant increases in
the athletes overall conditioning and the decreased
incidence in soft tissue injuries. The athletes have
developed a healthy respect for this aspect of training
despite the early morning starts.
David Bell and Paul Gaudoin, both ex-international
Australian captains make up the rest of the coaching
team. David’s expertise in goal keeper coaching is
paramount in the development of the wealth of
goalkeeping talent in WA. Paul’s ability to develop and
recognise individual skill and combine its application
in context make for a very good coaching team at
WAIS.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds, coached by Colin
Brandis, were GOlD medallists in the Australian Hockey
league (AHl) for 2006. With a new and youthful team
due to a number of senior players unavailable due to
injury, the final result was beyond the expected.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds ability to back up from its 2004 win and 2005 second place to again make the Final with a new look team provides great confidence in this team continuing to be a serious contender for some years.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds squad of 3 players was
chosen in September 2005 by selectors Colin Brandis
(Diamonds Coach & Chairperson), neil Hawgood (nTC
Coach), Troy Kelly, Sally Carbon, Scott Goodheart and
noel Morrison. From the squad a team of 20 players
were selected in January 2006 to represent the
Diamonds at the AHl season, which ran for 6 weeks
over April to May.
The pre-AHl program included a training and playing
schedule that commenced in the new year with a
number of practice matches, including three against
the Canadian national Team and games against the
U/6 State Schoolboys team, Presidents XI and the
Hotspurs.
At the completion of the game home and away
series the SmokeFree WA Diamonds were in 3rd place
with 29 points, scoring 46 goals and conceding 22
goals.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds played great, tough
hockey to dispose of the Canberra Strikers in the semi
final which put the Diamonds in good stead for the
Final against the Queensland Scorchers.
In the Final the Queensland Scorchers were on top of
the Diamonds early and it took some time for them to
gather their momentum and be competitive against
the rampant Scorchers. The Scorchers scored first
but the Diamonds hung in to be level at - at half
time. Although the Scorchers started the second half
with an early goal the Diamonds took the game up to
them for the better part of the second half and were
able to break through with three late goals to take the
game in style at 4-2.
The new-look SmokeFree WA Diamonds were well
lead by co-captains Kim Walker and emily Halliday
and the team represented Hockey WA with distinction
and pride on and off the field throughout the AHl
season.
emily Halliday was voted the SmokeFree WA Diamonds
Fairest & Best Player for 2006 and was the team’s
leading goal scorer and runner-up goal scorer for the
AHl. emily was the Most Valuable Player for the Final.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds had individual rewards
in emily Halliday, Kim Walker, Hope Munro and Kobie
McGurk representing the Hockeyroos at the World
Cup.
From the Diamonds team Shelly liddelow was
selected in the AIS and Fiona Boyce, Ashleigh nelson,
Chantelle Ciallella were selected in the national Junior
Youth Squad.
The SmokeFree WA Diamonds officials including the
manager (Jocelyn Henly), assistant coaches (neil
Hawgood & Scott Goodheart) and physiotherapist
(Fiona Chromiak) represented Hockey WA in a
professional and positive way in all activities
associated with the team.
The team was represented by a 5 player team
management group which provided an important
interface with the team officials and coaches. This
method of team management provided a positive
approach to implementing and improving the positive
and professional culture of the team resulting in a
great performance.
The support for the SmokeFree WA Diamonds by
Hockey WA administration and Board was much
appreciated by the team and officials. The positive
approach to the Diamonds AHl effort was evident
and greatly appreciated by the players and team
management. Thanks also to our major sponsor
Healthway.
The team contributed to the funding of the AHl
program by conducting two successful regional
coaching clinics for junior players and a successful
quiz night. This not only provided funding but also
built a positive profile for the players and the team.

Season 2006 for the Thundersticks was mildly
successful. The group was lucky enough to have
many debutantes and renewed energy going into
the season. Judd Dyer, Andrew Smith, Tom edwards,
Daryl McCormick, Ross Meadows and Paul nicholls all
enjoyed the opportunity to wear the Thundersticks
uniform for the first time. Additionally we experienced
the loss of Andrew Jacobs just prior to the season with
a knee injury.
In the early round we were unable to really gain from
the opportunities that we created in each game. We
were awarded numerous corners with little success. A
staggering statistic saw us scoring around ten percent
- a figure that made it difficult to break into the top
four at the end of the minor rounds.
Fergus Kavanagh was having a very good season
capitalising on the experience that he was given in
2005. The defensive unit held firm as well conceding
the least amount of corners, and the second least
goals against for the competition.
With a young group of strikers the learning curve
was reasonably steep and the performances of this
group was pleasing. However as a group we never
really imposed our game on the opposition in this
area. Judd Dyer was the highest goal scorer for the
Thundersticks, a good sign for the 2006 rookie and
something to build on going into the 2007 season.
The final week was a breath of fresh air with the Thundersticks saving their best until the end. A hard earned victory over Queensland was the culmination of the efforts throughout the season.
Another victory against eventual finalist Tasmania
was a sign that the group had matured and was now
playing a better sort of hockey, but not for long.
The semi final showdown against Queensland was a
reminder of how good they can be, with a 5-0 loss
dished our way. The boys tried all game and were
beaten by a team that was worthy to take out the title.
In the last game of the tournament against Victoria
we were inconsistent but inspirational. From a four
goal deficit we managed to take the game to an extra
time (5-5). We had opportunity after opportunity to
take the game but ended up settling for fourth in a
penalty shoot out.
The most prestigious award in the SmokeFree WA
Thundersticks camp is the “Dinga” Bell Award, this is
awarded by the players to the person that contributes
the most to the team environment on and off the
field. The award is in memory of Gordon Bell who
over several decades dedicated all of his spare time
to the WA senior team as a selector and was revered
by the players for his effort and time. This award was
bestowed on Bevan George, a worthy winner. Fergus
Kavanagh was considered to be the Thundersticks
best with a consistent season throughout.
Overall 2006 was a season to build on, with new faces
increasing the depth of talent that is available to play
at AHl level. 2007 will be a test with some players
in their third season of
AHl competition and
required to step up and
make a difference. A win is
possible.
