“I basically put my helmet on when I did,because it had fallen on the floor of therescue truck. I wanted to keep it fromrolling around,” Ashland Volunteer FireCompany veteran Mat Blankenship says.

The evening shift of June 20 (2002) wasfar from textbook in many ways.Blankenship was not scheduled to work,but agreed to substitute for another vol-unteer.

A call comes inAn emergency rescue call came into thestation around 10:30 p.m., concerning a“car in the woods.” The location wasInterstate 95, Hanover County, Virginia,known for its frequent and often fatalmotor vehicle accidents.

“I was assigned to a heavy rescue extrica-tion unit,” says Blankenship. “We fol-lowed the primary fire engine to the

Blankenship and another firefightershared a rear bench seat in their truck’scab. Both were wearing seat (lap) belts.Blankenship was seated on the passen-ger side, wearing his Cairns 1010 Helmetthat he donned prematurely less than aminute before his vehicle came to a stop.

The fully loaded lumber truck followingthem did not stop. “Troopers estimatedthat we were hit at 65 to 70 miles perhour,” Blankenship says. “Our truck rico-cheted off the fire engine. The front endlifted up, and we flipped over, landing onthe rear passenger side.”

“My Cairns 1010 and right shoulder wereoutside of the truck and went slidingalong the pavement for about 150 feet,”he says.

The rescue truck finally came to a stop,with Blankenship’s helmet intact and hishead unharmed.“There was nothingwrong with my head – not a scratch on it.”

His Cairns 1010 Helmet told another story“It was still in one piece, but it was reallyworn away and glass shards wereembedded in it,” Blankenship says.

Although he walked away from the acci-dent, Blankenship’s shoulder remains aproblem. He is limited to light duty as aprofessional firefighter (for Henrico FireCompany of Hanover County) followingthree reconstructive surgeries and ongo-ing therapy.

“Because of the injury, I’m notresponding to volunteer calls, either.But, I’m still very active in otheraspects of Ashland Volunteer FireCompany,” he says.

Blankenship’s helmet traveled as ateaching tool with area fire train-ing units before returning to itsowner.

“It was a helmet that I had pur-chased for myself because Iliked the style of the Cairns 1010,”

Blankenship says. “Standard issue in mycounty at that time was an older model,but they have since changed to theCairns 1010.”

As for the “car in the woods”? “It was a V-DOT lawnmower,” he says. “Acrew was cutting grass that day, andsomeone forgot to turn off the lights.”

Fortunately, Mat Blankenship didn’t for-get to put on his helmet.

The PlanWhen Chief Jay Reardon, president ofMABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System), amutual aid system that unites most ofthe 1200 fire departments in Illinois, sethis sights on equipping every firefighterin the state of Illinois with a CBRN GasMask, many said it “won’t happen.”

They didn’t count on MSA’s diversifiedand reliable team of sales, marketing,and distributor experts.

MABAS is an entirely volunteer organiza-tion, and about 40,000 firefighters arescattered across Illinois. Reardon realizedthat he needed a “turnkey solution,” aplan to not only distribute the gas masksbut also provide certification training,medical testing, and accountability.

On May 8, 2001, instructor Rich Wagnerwas training a group at the AlleghenyCounty Police and Fire Academy, when heinadvertently demonstrated how well aCairns helmet can do its job.

“We were teaching firefighter survivaland safety. Everything was set up. Wewere all set to rock and roll with fourengines and about 40 people. I waswearing my Cairns 1010 traditional firehelmet, “ Wagner remembered.

“I broke them into groups, took onegroup into the first floor, told them to doa right-hand search, and then, after a fewminutes, simulate a ceiling or floor col-lapse. I wanted them to go through steeldoors, wooden doors, solid-core doors,block walls—whatever it would take toget out if the building, because theycould not go out through the same doorthey came in.”

Suddenly, a three-inch supply hose pres-surized, sending the heavy brass “Y” fit-ting at its end on a collision course withWagner’s head.

“The next thing I remember, I woke upoutside. I could not see out of my lefteye, and I saw a massive starburst in myright eye. There were shooting pains allover my head. My wrist hurt, my ankle,

my knees . . . I heard people call myname, and that’s when I came to. I wasout for about 20 seconds.

“Basically, I got hit in the left rear quad-rant, the occipital area. An engineer esti-mated that the helmet was hit bybetween 350 and 400 pounds of pres-sure. I had 80-some pounds of gear on,plus my body weight. For the hose to pickme up two feet off the ground and blowme 25 feet out of the building, it had tobe a massive force. My Cairns helmettook the brunt of the force, and I’m hereto talk about it today.”

we purchased from you was instrumen-tal in locating a suspect involved in theshooting of the Pott. Co. deputy lastmonth.

“About 2 1/2 hours after the shooting, ashort-lived pursuit started in Plattsmouth.The driver went down a dead-end roadand crashed the stolen vehicle into anattached garage. The suspect then fledon foot into a heavily wooded area. TheFire Department-owned TIC was given toa Plattsmouth Police officer, who teamedup with two Cass County Deputies with aK9 and another Plattsmouth Officer.

“The K9 led them about 45 yards east ofthe house to an area about 35 feet over-looking BNSF railroad tracks. The policeofficer scanned the area with the TIC andlocated the suspect lying prone inside acoal car. The officer near the tracks thenapproached the car, made contact withthe suspect, and took him into custody[about an hour after pursuit began].

Although the functions of the Galaxy arecomplex, its operation is very user-friend-ly. The Galaxy system stands alone,requiring no computer controller or net-work interface. Electrical connections andgas tubing are pre-connected, so that

once the portable gas detection instru-ment is placed in a stand, either a “bumptest” or full calibration is automaticallyperformed. The Galaxy Automated TestSystem operates without the touch of asingle button.

The Galaxy System is also a completetest record keeper, and its interface fordata retrieval and reporting is extremelyeasy to use. Any web browser can beused to access the data of a network-enabled Galaxy System.
