FFrroomm tthhee EEddiittoorr’’ss DDeesskk Can you believe it? The holidays are over and it is now 2006! Wow!

The Chapter held its Annual Holiday Awards Banquet/General Meeting on December 1 at the Turnip Rose in Orange. The evening included entertainment, socializing, great food, voting for the 2006 Board of Directors, and, of course, the presentation of the Chapter’s Year-End Awards. Almost 100 awards were given out! It was a great evening! You will find a report with photos in this issue.

Congratulations again to all those Pomona Chapter members that received year-end awards. You worked very hard this year! A full listing of winners can be found in this newsletter.

The general membership voted in a new Board of Directors at the December 1 Awards Banquet/General Meeting. The 2006 Board of Directors includes incumbents Jack Andrzejewski, Anna Beal, Julie A. Haefner, Kimberly Hudson-Watts, Amy Miller and S. Kirsten Rehfeld. New to the board are Kenny Piguee and Janet Turgetto. The new board has chosen Julie A. Haefner to serve as Chapter Chair for 2006.

A big thank you goes to Carol Tice and Anna Beal for being master bidders at the CDS Silent Auction. They made sure that our Chapter’s bid for the new dressage court and letters was the winning bid. The Chapter now has two full courts with letters to use at our shows. And we got a great price too!

The USPS is at it again! Postage rates will increase on January 8, 2006. Please see notice in this issue regarding how you can receive Free Rein.

This issue also includes results and photos from the All Hallow’s Eve Dressage Show held November 6, 2005, a report on the USDF Symposium, an application for the CDS Amateur Clinic, and much more.

As the show season is getting into full swing, don’t forget that any member that wants to be considered for the Chapter’s Year-End Award program must have at least four volunteer hours on the books. You can volunteer to help at one of this year’s shows. No experience is required.

Have a safe and Happy New Year!

Let’s face it, if we wanted to participate in an easy sport, we would not have chosen dressage. Our Chapter is filled with equestrians that consistently rise to meet the demanding challenges of our sport. As challenging as dressage is on its own, it can be made more difficult by riding a horse with unique characteristics. Pomona Chapter JR/YR member Rebekkah Hultgren rides a beautiful bay Thoroughbred gelding with lots of chrome. His barn name is “Nexta” but he is shown as “Blind Ambition.” He is aptly named because he is blind. In 2005 Rebekkah showed Nexta at the Chapter’s two triple rated shows in July at Fairplex. They rode in training and first levels as well as dressage seat equitation. The duo earned a qualifying score for the CDS Junior/Young Rider Championships at Training Level and earned the score that won them a CDS-Pomona Chapter Year End Top Five Score in First Level JR/YR. Rebekkah also became a CDS Qualified Riding member at that show. When people learned that there was a blind horse showing at Fairplex, they came to see for themselves. Larry, Rebekkah's dad, answered a lot of questions about Nexta. Rebekkah just stood there wondering why they were so interested in her horse. To her, his being blind is no big deal. It is normal for her. She is used to it. She does not realize the significance of what it means for her to successfully show Nexta, let alone just to ride him. Her trainer, Janet Turgetto, says, “Rebekkah rides because she believes in herself and her horse. She set aside her love of jumping horses when he started loosing his sight and began riding him in dressage. They both have had their ups and downs, but I believe that it says something when a rider doesn't discard a horse just because he can't do some things anymore. They are both adapting and it looks as if they may be around a while too.” Rebekkah received the Kingdom Video Sportsmanship Award this year. Rebekkah is an upbeat competitor, always with a smile on her face, encouraging her barn mates, joining in on the laughter, and most importantly, believes in her partner and continues to ride,

compete and improve. Despite the complex challenges, Rebekkah plans on showing Nexta again in 2006. If you see them at a show, ask Nexta if he is happy. He may just give you a smile.

For a wonderful day of learning, I bundled up in my wool jacket, took along my wool blanket and headed into Burbank, on Saturday December 3rd, to listen to Klaus Balkenhol teach top riders on their young horses at the USDF Symposium. The clinic was full of amazing riders. Steffen Peters, Guenter Seidel, Hilda Gurney, Sue Blinks, David Wightman and Laurie Doyle topped the list of riders on Saturday. Saturday started with a demonstration by Willie Arts with his horse Prince. Prince looked ready for Halloween because his internal skeleton had been painted on the outside for all to see. What a wonderful effect! As Klaus had Willie lengthen and shorten the side reins, we could see the change in the neck; not just in the outward shape but in the cervical spine itself. This strongly illustrated the necessity of keeping the horse’s neck telescoping outward. The hind leg skeletal structure had also been painted on Prince. As the side reins shortened, interestingly, so did the movement of the hind leg! Following this, two 2 year old horses (a filly and a colt) from DG Bar ranch, came in for a lunge line demonstration. Both were exceedingly brave and it was nice to compare two different types! The filly had longer, more elegant lines; the colt exuded power and strength. Then the riding began in earnest. On Saturday, the riders presented their young horses. Ranging in age from 5 to 7 years old, the young horses’ eyes opened wide at the sight of the crowds in the stands. This then, became a theme for the day. A young horse entered the arena, worried at the surroundings. Klaus gave the rider plenty of time to warm up, ride around and allow the young horse time to adjust to the surroundings before asking for harder work. Klaus would often use this time to talk to the audience about different subjects. These included the amount of distance a horse walks when in the pasture, 6 to 8 kilometers compared to the amount of distance covered in the stall, 0.17 kilometers. Klaus also discussed the importance of allowing the young horses enough time to develop and not pressuring them too quickly. He was in particular concerned about 3 year old auction horses that appeared to be doing the work of the 5 year olds. He stated that these horses often end up in the veterinary clinic with injuries.

After enough time had passed, Klaus masterfully went about teasing out the best work each young horse had to offer that day. Klaus approached each horse individually, yet some themes for the day emerged. Klaus encouraged the riders to take frequent short walk breaks. The riders were to use the breaks as rewards for a job well done but equally as important, the breaks gave the horse’s muscles a chance to rest, re-oxygenate and prevent mistakes borne out of fatigue instead of misunderstandings. Klaus frequently presented the young horses with complicated work. Steffen Peters rode a 5 year old stallion. Included in his training exercises were canter half passes, single flying changes and counter canter. Klaus sequentially built the work and exercises in complication. He took the horse and rider exactly to the brink of their abilities, increasing collection, suppleness and connection. Riding became art and then, quickly, before the art melted, Klaus quieted the work down, used stretching circles and released the “positive tension.” This technique of compressing the horse and then easing the work also benefited Guenter Seidel’s young horse, a seven year old. The tension in Guenter’s horse showed it self as tightness in the neck and in the back, although the gaits continued to be brilliant. Klaus asked Guenter to repeatedly half-halt and slow the horse down, at times nearly to a halt. This helped prevent shorter, rushing strides. However, Klaus’ emphasis remained on the giving of the reins AFTER the half-halt. He said that the secret of the half-halt is in the giving of the reins after taking them. Guenter’s horse began to lengthen his neck and to become more elastic in his body. The brilliance of his gaits increased with this relaxation.

Klaus Balkenhol Emphasizes the Horse Continued on Page 7 There were also young horses that needed to be encouraged to take bigger, more active steps. Klaus frequently called for more forward active steps after the half halt. He quickly identified for the rider the best rhythm for the horse and could accurately instruct the rider on whether to increase or decrease the activity level. There were too many amazing horses and riders to mention details about each ride. The skill of Klaus Balkenhol as an instructor however, was apparent in the improvement of each horse and rider team at the end of each ride.

CDS-Pomona Chapter members were recently spotted all dressed up and looking dapper. Why you ask? The annual Year-End Awards Banquet and general meeting of course! This year's banquet was held December 1, 2005, at the Turnip Rose in Orange. The facility was nicely decorated for the holidays. The food was in abundance and the desserts were flying off the table as fast as the servers could replenish them. After dinner, awards were handed out. Year-end awards were handed out to the winners - grand champions, reserve grand champions, top five scorers and perpetual trophies. Each grand champion received a navy blue embroidered show bag, a grand champion rosette and a certificate. Reserve grand champions received an engraved silver presentation tray, a reserve grand champion rosette and a certificate. Top five winners received a top five rosette of the appropriate placing (first through fifth place) and a certificate. Perpetual trophy winners received the appropriate perpetual trophy for a year engraved with their name, their horse’s name and their score plus a certificate. The reserve perpetual trophy winners received a certificate. Equitation champions received an embroidered jacket and a certificate. (A list of winners can be found in this issue.) The recipient of the Kingdom Video sponsored Sportsmanship Award was not revealed until the banquet so it was a surprise to all. The winner was Rebekkah Hultgren. Rebekkah shows her horse, Blind Ambition, in training and first level as well as dressage seat equitation. Rebekkah’s horse is aptly named because he is blind. Rebekkah is an upbeat competitor, always with a smile on her face. She encourages her barn mates, joins in on the laughter, and most importantly, believes in her partner and continues to ride, compete and improve. She earned her CDS Qualified Rider Award, earned a qualifying score for CDS Junior Championships and earned the score that won her a Pomona Chapter First Level JR/YR Top 5 Score. Janet Turgetto, Rebekkah’s trainer, says, “She rides because she believes in herself and her horse. She set aside her love of jumping horses when he started loosing his sight and Pomona Chapter Sponsor began riding him in dressage. They both have had their ups and downs, but I believe that it says

something when a rider doesn't discard a horse just because he can't do some things anymore. They are both adapting and it looks as if they may be around a while too.” Once again raffles abounded. Two raffles were held for chapter members that donated extra volunteer hours. The raffle for the general membership was won by Lauren Palmquist. She received a certificate for a free 2006 CDS membership. The raffle for the board was for a free ride at a CDS recognized Pomona Chapter show and was won by Rachel Bingle. The last raffle was a fundraiser and tickets had been sold earlier in the evening. There were two prizes for this raffle. The first winner drawn received a free 2006 CDS membership and was won by Janet Turgetto. The second winner drawn received a custom wood burned box and was won by Melody Hicks. If you missed the 2005 Year-End Awards Banquet and general meeting, I strongly encourage you to attend in 2006. Every member is invited and is encouraged to join the chapter in fun, friendship, awards and, of course, great desserts!

Each member that wants to via for Chapter Year-End Awards must volunteer at least 4 hours of service to the chapter. Members can earn hours by attending chapter meetings, working at chapter events such as shows and clinics, or by brining in $100.00 cash in sponsorships. In order to keep accurate records, a volunteer log will be available at all meetings and events for members to fill out. If a member does not mark their time on the volunteer log, he/she will not receive credit for any time worked. We cannot record volunteer hours we know nothing about.

Please also keep in mind that when you volunteer at shows, you cannot claim volunteer hours for the time you are riding. This may seem obvious, but some people work before they show and forget to sign out when they ride and re-sign in after they come back to work. And volunteers can only claim the lunch break if they actually work. Although it is sometimes hard work, eating does not count as a volunteer service. The Chapter appreciates all of time and effort that the volunteers donate. Please help us to make sure that you get the credit you deserve!

VOLUNTEER HONOR ROUNDS

Our 2006 show season has just begun! The following horse and rider combinations have qualified for Year-End Top 5 Scores and Perpetual Trophies. As we have only had one show thus far, no one has qualified for Year-End Championships and Reserves that require scores from at least two shows. Each rider must have volunteered four hours of service to the chapter.

Currently the Chapter’s newsletter, Free Rein, is available in two versions: in print (by USPS) and Adobe Acrobat Reader - .pdf files (online). Both versions are exactly the same. The only difference is how it is delivered.

CDS Amateur Clinic Series

For the tenth year, CDS will offer three amateur clinics. The clinic selection process is through the local chapters.

The present clinic format starts with a required introductory lecture session the evening prior to the first day of the clinic and three days of riding sessions.

This year's CDS Southern Amateur Clinic will be held at Kathy Pavlich’s Shadow Ridge. Lilo Fore has been selected as the clinician. The clinic will take place April 6 - 9, 2006. This year’s coordinator is Carol Tice.

If you would like to be nominated, CDS selection protocol requires that any interested Amateur (who can be a junior) who has not previously participated, submit a written letter of intention to their respective chapter. (See application on page 16.)

For its 10th year, CDS will be hosting the Amateur Clinic Series. This year's southern clinic will be held at Kathy Pavlich’s Shadow Ridge in Highland. Lilo Fore has been selected as the clinician. The clinic will take place April 6 - 9, 2006. Participants will receive three private lessons over the course of the weekend and are required to attend an introductory lecture and welcome session the evening prior to the first day of riding. If you would like to be nominated, CDS selection protocol requires that any interested Amateur (who can be a junior) who has not previously participated, submit a written letter of intention to their respective chapter (see form below).

One rider and one alternate will be selected via a random drawing.

Submissions must be received no later than March 1, 2006.

The drawing will be held at the March Board meeting. If selected, the Chapter will pay the $100 fee to the Amateur Clinic organizer to guarantee participation. The selected chapter member is responsible for his/her own transportation, stabling and incidental fees. If selected, please contact the CDS-Pomona Chapter treasurer to arrange for chapter payment to the clinic organizer.

Dressage is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports as it allows people of all ages and abilities to participate at all levels. The Pomona Chapter membership is currently just under 200 persons. Most of our members either live or work in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Each year we host a multitude of Dressage events. All sponsors receive recognition in each of the show premiums sent to approximately 250 households.
