ASEBA®

The Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment(ASEBA®) includes an integrated set of rating forms for ages1½–90+. ASEBA forms are used and researched worldwide,as reported in some 5,500 studies from 62 countries.

The ASEBA offers a comprehensive approach to assessingadaptive and maladaptive functioning. Developed throughdecades of research and practical experience to identifyactual patterns of functioning, the ASEBA provides thought-ful professionals with user-friendly tools. ASEBA instru-ments clearly document clients’ functioning in terms of bothquantitative scores and individualized descriptions in re-spondents’ own words.

Descriptions include what concerns respondents most aboutthe clients; the best things about clients; and details of com-petencies and problems that are not captured by quantita-tive scores alone. The individualized descriptive data, pluscompetence, adaptive, and problem scores, facilitate com-prehensive, in-depth assessment.

Numerous studies demonstrate significant associations be-tween ASEBA scores and both diagnostic and special edu-cation categories. You can relate ASEBA directly to DSM-IV diagnostic categories by using the normed DSM-orientedscales that are available for scoring ASEBA forms.

Preschool Forms & Profiles

Normed on a U.S. national sample, the preschool formsand profiles span ages 1½-5 years. The empiricallybased syndromes scored from the CBCL/1½-5 andC-TRF are based on factor analyses that were coordi-nated between the two instruments. The profiles forthe two instruments have the following 6 cross-infor-mant syndromes:

◆ Emotionally Reactive◆ Anxious/Depressed◆ Somatic Complaints◆ Withdrawn◆ Attention Problems◆ Aggressive Behavior

The CBCL/1½-5 also has a Sleep Problems syndrome. Bothforms have parallel Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Prob-lems scales.

Language Development Survey (LDS)An important feature of the CBCL/1½-5 is the LDS, which usesparents’ reports to assess children’s expressive vocabularies andword combinations, as well as risk factors for language delays.Developed by Dr. Leslie Rescorla, the LDS has been used innumerous studies of language problems. (For references, seeBérubé and Achenbach, Bibliography of Published Studies Us-ing ASEBA Instruments: 2005 Edition.) Based on our na-tional normative sample, the LDS indicates whether achild’s vocabulary and word combinations are delayed rela-tive to norms for ages 18-35 months. The LDS can be com-pleted for language-delayed older children for comparisonwith norms up to 35 months.

School-Age Forms & Profiles

Child Behavior Checklist/6-18 (CBCL/6-18)Teacher’s Report Form/6-18 (TRF)

Youth Self-Report/11-18 (YSR)

The CBCL/6-18, TRF, and YSR were revised in 2001with a few new items replacing items that were eitherunscored or that were rare and did not load on anysyndromes. The forms have new national norms forproblem, competence, and adaptive scales. The re-vised school-age profiles feature DSM-oriented scalesin addition to empirically based scales. All three formsare documented in a single user-friendly Manual.

Cross-Informant SyndromesThe following empirically based cross-informant syndromeswere derived from factor analyses of the three forms:

◆ Anxious/Depressed◆ Withdrawn/Depressed◆ Somatic Complaints◆ Social Problems◆ Thought Problems◆ Attention Problems◆ Rule-Breaking Behavior◆ Aggressive Behavior

Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity subscales are scoredfrom the TRF Attention Problems syndrome. All forms haveparallel Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scales.Hand-scored profiles are available. Latino Spanish CBCL/6-18 and YSR forms are also available.

DSM-Oriented ScalesThe DSM-oriented scales were constructed by having experi-enced child psychiatrists and psychologists from 16 culturesidentify ASEBA school-age items that are very consistent withDSM-IV categories. The scales are:

◆ Affective Problems◆ Anxiety Problems◆ Somatic Problems◆ Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Problems◆ Oppositional Defiant Problems◆ Conduct Problems

Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity subscales are alsoscored from the TRF Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Problemsscale.

Observational Assessment of Children & Youth

Test Observation Form (TOF/2-18)Ability & achievement tests pose significant challenges forchildren & youth. The TOF enhances the value of stan-dardized testing in the following ways:

◆ The TOF capitalizes on standardized testing & onexaminers’ experience to obtain samples of behaviorthat can be compared across children & for the samechild on different occasions.

◆ The TOF efficiently documents examiners’ observa-tions without requiring written reports.

◆ Based on TOFs for 3,943 children, gender-specificnorms for ages 2-5, 6-11, & 12-18 measure devianceon multiple scales.

◆ The TOF enables examiners to evaluate test perfor-mance in relation to problems documented duringtesting.

◆ The TOF is scored on empirically based syndromes,DSM-oriented ADH Problems, Inattentive, & Hyper-activity-Impulsivity scales, Internalizing, Externaliz-ing, & Total Problems.

◆ A child’s TOF profile can be compared with CBCL,C-TRF, TRF, YSR, SCICA, & DOF profiles.

TOF SyndromesFive empirically based syndromes were derived from fac-tor analyses of TOFs for 3,400 children:

◆ Withdrawn/Depressed◆ Language/Thought Problems◆ Anxious◆ Oppositional◆ Attention Problems

DSM-oriented ADH Problems ScaleThe TOF’s ADH Problems scale includes normedsubscales for Inattention & Hyperactivity/Impulsivity.

TOF Starter kits are available (see page 19).

The TOF/2-18, SCICA 6-18, & DOF/5-14Three ASEBA forms enable you to make direct observational

assessments of children & youth in different contexts

Semistructured Clinical Interview for Chil-dren & Adolescents (SCICA/6-18)The SCICA maximizes the value of interviews with a flex-ible user-friendly protocol, plus self-report & observationalitems rated by the interviewer.

◆ Items are scored on empirically based syndromes,DSM-oriented scales, Internalizing, Externalizing, &separate scales for total observed & self-reported prob-lems.

◆ Training video enables trainees to learn by rating in-terview segments & entering their ratings into a com-puter program for comparison with experienced rat-ers’ scores.

◆ DSM-oriented ADH Problems scale with Inattention& Hyperactivity-Impulsivity subscales.

SCICA Starter kits are available (see page 20).

Direct Observation Form (DOF/5-14)The DOF documents behavior in group settings such asclassrooms.

◆ Can be completed by teacher aides and other para-professionals.

◆ Obtains narrative descriptions & ratings of problems& on-task behavior in 10-minute intervals.

◆ Compares target child’s behavior with behavior ofcontrol children in the same setting.

◆ Scored on empirically based syndromes, on-task scale,Internalizing, Externalizing, & Total Problems.

◆ Scoring program averages scores separately for tar-get child & control children over multiple intervals.

Adult Forms & Profiles

Adult Self-Report/18-59 (ASR)Adult Behavior Checklist/18-59 (ABCL)

Available on Web-Link!

The ASR obtains adults’ self-reports of diverse aspectsof adaptive functioning and problems. The ABCL is aparallel form for obtaining reports from people whoknow the adult well. Both forms are valuable for as-sessing adults in mental health, forensic, counseling, medical, substance abuse, and other settings. They arealso especially valuable for assessing parents of chil-dren seen for mental health services. By having par-ents complete ASRs to describe themselves and ABCLsto describe their spouse or partner, practitioners can ob-tain profiles that highlight crucial agreements and dis-agreements between parents’ self-descriptions and otherpeople’s descriptions of their behavior.

The profiles for scoring the ASR and ABCL includenormed scales for adaptive functioning, empirically basedsyndromes, substance use, Internalizing, Externalizing, andTotal Problems. In addition, the ASR and ABCL profilesfeature new DSM-oriented scales consisting of items thatexperts from 10 cultures identified as being very consis-tent with DSM-IV diagnostic categories.

The profiles also include a Critical Items scale consistingof items of particular concern to clinicians. The profilesdisplay scale scores in relation to norms for each gender atages 18-35 and 36-59, based on national probabilitysamples. The Manual for the ASEBA Adult Forms & Pro-files fully documents the scales, their reliability, and theirvalidity. The Manual also illustrates numerous clinical andresearch applications of the ASR and ABCL.

Cross-Informant SyndromesThe following cross-informant syndromes were derivedfrom factor analyses of the adult forms:

◆ Anxious/Depressed◆ Withdrawn◆ Somatic Complaints◆ Thought Problems◆ Attention Problems◆ Aggressive Behavior◆ Rule-Breaking Behavior◆ Intrusive

Both forms have parallel Substance Use, Critical Items,Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scales.Hand-scored and computer-scored profiles are available.

New! The OASR & OABCL for Ages 60-90+

Older Adult Self-Report (OASR)Older Adult Behavior Checklist (OABCL)

Available on Web-Link!Self-administered in 15-20 minutes, the OASR obtains self-reports of diverse aspects of adaptive functioning and prob-lems. The OABCL is a parallel form for obtaining reports frompeople who know the person being assessed, includingspouse, partner, family members, friends, caregivers, homehealth aides, residential staff, and health care providers.

The OASR and OABCL are scored on profiles that make iteasy to see similarities and differences between self-reportsand reports by other people. The profiles display scale scoresin relation to gender- and age-specific norms. Clerical staffcan score profiles by hand in 5-10 minutes or by computerin about 2 minutes. The ADM Computer Module for Ages60-90+ compares OASR and OABCL scores on individualproblem items, personal strengths, and problem scales.

The OASR and OABCL can greatly improve assessment ina variety of contexts, such as: psychiatric and psychologi-cal evaluations; medical care, including routine care andevaluation of functioning following events such as strokes, cardiac problems, falls, and illnesses; following significantlife changes, such as the illness or loss of a loved one, movesto retirement communities, assisted living, and nursinghomes; and evaluations before and after planned changesand interventions. To measure changes in functioning, it isespecially helpful to have the forms completed at intervals, such as 2 months, to determine whether functioning is im-proving, worsening, or remaining stable.

The profiles for scoring the OASR and OABCL includenormed scales for adaptive functioning, empirically basedsyndromes, DSM-oriented scales, critical items, and totalproblems. The Manual for the ASEBA Older Adult Forms &Profiles fully documents the scales, their reliability, and theirvalidity. The Manual also illustrates numerous clinical andresearch applications of the OASR and OABCL.

Empirically Based SyndromesThe following cross-informant syndromes were derivedfrom factor analyses of the OASR and OABCL.

◆ Anxious/Depressed ◆ Worries◆ Somatic Complaints ◆ Functional Impairment◆ Irritable/Disinhibited ◆ Thought Problems◆ Memory/Cognition Problems

DSM-Oriented ScalesThe DSM-oriented scales were constructed by having ex-perienced psychiatrists and psychologists from 7 culturesidentify ASEBA older adult items that are very consistentwith DSM-IV categories. The scales are:

◆ Depressive Problems◆ Anxiety Problems◆ Somatic Problems◆ Dementia Problems◆ Psychotic Problems◆ Antisocial Personality Problems

BibliographyThe Bibliography of Published Studies Using theAchenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment

(ASEBA) lists some 5,500 studies published through De-cember 31, 2004, plus an index of studies grouped by hun-dreds of topics such as medical conditions, abuse, types ofdisorders, and cross-cultural research. The 2005 editionprovides some 500 new references, plus an index of some8,000 authors and 71 languages in which translations havebeen made. Available on CD-ROM in ProCite display for-mat. Enables users to perform sophisticated lookups and toprint as much of the Bibliography as they need. RequiresWindows® 95/98/NT/2000/XP.

Preschool Forms and ProfilesWe revised the preschool forms and profiles in 2000. Thefollowing cross-informant syndromes are scored from bothforms: Emotionally Reactive, Anxious/Depressed, SomaticComplaints, Withdrawn, Attention Problems, and Aggres-sive Behavior. A Sleep Problems syndrome is also scoredfrom the CBCL/1½-5. Internalizing, Externalizing, and To-tal Problems scales are scored from both forms. Our ADMAges 1½-5 module compares up to 8 preschool forms perchild. The similar layouts of the CBCL/1½-5 and C-TRFprofiles help you compare multiple hand-scored profiles.Another feature is a profile of DSM-oriented scales, whichcomprise CBCL/1½-5 and C-TRF items that experts from10 cultures identified as being very consistent with DSMdiagnostic categories. The CBCL/1½-5 includes the Lan-guage Development Survey (LDS) for identifying languagedelays.

Child Behavior Checklist/1½-5Parents rate 99 problem items and describe problems, dis-abilities, what concerns parents most about their child, andthe best things about the child. Scales are based on ratingsof 1,728 children and are normed on a national sample of700 children. The Language Development Survey (LDS)obtains parents’ reports of children’s expressive vocabu-laries and word combinations, plus risk factors for

behavior at 1-minute intervals and 96 problem items at theend of the 10-minute interval. Hand-scored and computer-scored profiles enable users to compare an observed targetchild with 2 observed control children for on-task, Inter-nalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems, averaged forup to 6 observation sessions. The computer-scored profilealso includes 6 syndrome scales derived from observationsof 212 problem children aged 5-14. (The 6 syndromes arenot scorable on hand-scored profiles.) The DOF scales havenorms based on 287 children observed as classroom con-trols for problem children. The ASEBA School-Age Manualreports reliability, validity, and mean DOF scale scores forreferred and control children.

School-Age Forms and ProfilesWe revised the CBCL/6-18, TRF, and YSR and their pro-files in 2001. Factor analyses showed that new items con-cerning alcohol, tobacco, and breaking rules load on theRule-Breaking Behavior syndrome, which is a revision ofthe Delinquent Behavior syndrome. A new item concern-ing lack of enjoyment loads on the Withdrawn/Depressedsyndrome, a revision of the Withdrawn syndrome. Newitems concerning failure to finish tasks and distractibilityload on the Attention Problems syndrome. The other 5 syn-dromes common to the 3 forms are: Anxious/Depressed,Somatic Complaints, Social Problems, Thought Problems, and Aggressive Behavior. Six DSM-oriented scales are alsoscored from all 3 forms. The ADM Ages 6-18 module com-pares up to 8 school-age forms per child. As detailed in theSchool-Age Manual, the continuity between pre-2001 and2001 scales facilitates longitudinal analyses of pre-2001editions in relation to the 2001 editions.

Child Behavior Checklist/6-18The CBCL/6-18 obtains parents’ reports of children’s com-petencies and problems. Profiles for scoring the CBCL/6-18 include 6 DSM-oriented scales, 3 competence scales,Total Competence, 8 cross-informant syndromes, Internal-izing, Externalizing, and Total Problems. Scales are basedon parents’ ratings of 4,994 high-scoring children and arenormed on 1,753 nonreferred children. Hand-scored andcomputer-scored profiles are available. Latino SpanishCBCL/6-18 available.

language delays. For ages 18-35 months, the LDS is scoredto indicate whether vocabulary and word combinations aredelayed. For language-delayed older children, the LDS pro-vides comparisons with norms up to 35 months. Hand-scored and computer-scored profiles are available. LatinoSpanish CBCL/1½-5-LDS forms available.

Caregiver-Teacher Report Form/1½-5Daycare providers and teachers rate 99 items and describeproblems, disabilities, what concerns the respondent mostabout the child, and the best things about the child. Scalesare based on ratings of 1,113 children and are normed on1,192 children. Hand-scored and computer-scored profilesare available.

Test Observation Form (TOF/2-18)The TOF includes 125 items for assessing characteristicsobserved during individual ability and achievement tests.Examples include Acts too young for age; Defiant, talksback, or sarcastic; Difficulty following directions; Doesn’tsit still, restless, or hyperactive; and Sudden changes inmood or feelings. Each item is scored on a 4-step scale.Factor analyses of TOFs completed for 3,400 high-scor-ing children yielded syndromes designated as Withdrawn/Depressed, Language/Thought Problems, Anxious, Oppo-sitional, and Attention Problems. The first 2 syndromesform an Internalizing grouping, while the last 2 syndromesform an Externalizing grouping. TOF items are also scoredon a DSM-oriented Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Prob-lems scale and Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivitysubscales comprising items identified by experts as beingvery consistent with DSM-IV diagnoses of ADHD.

The TOF scales are normed on a diverse sample of 3,943nonreferred children from across the USA. Separate normsare provided for each gender at ages 2-5, 6-11, and 12-18.The TOF Manual provides details of the development ofthe TOF and its scales, its relations to other instruments, and guidelines for practical applications.

Direct Observation Form (DOF/5-14)Using the DOF, an observer writes a description of a child’sbehavior as it occurs over a 10-minute interval in class-rooms or other group settings. The observer scores on-task

School-Age Forms and Profiles (continued)Teacher’s Report Form/6-18

The TRF obtains teachers’ ratings of most CBCL/6-18problem items, plus other items appropriate for teachers.Profiles include scales for academic performance, adap-tive functioning, the 8 cross-informant syndromes and the6 DSM-oriented scales like those scored from the CBCLand YSR, Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems.TRF profiles yield separate scores for Inattention and Hy-peractivity-Impulsivity. Scales are based on 4,437 high-scor-ing students and are normed on 2,319 nonreferred students.Hand-scored and computer-scored profiles are available.

Youth Self-Report/11-18The YSR can be completed by youths having 5th grade read-ing skills, or administered orally. It has many items like theCBCL/6-18, but 14 CBCL problem items are replaced withsocially desirable items endorsed by most youths. Profiles forscoring the YSR include 2 competence scales, Total Compe-tence, the 8 cross-informant syndromes and 6 DSM-orientedscales like those scored from the CBCL/6-18 and TRF, Inter-nalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problems scales. Scales arebased on 2,581 high-scoring youths and are normed on 1,057nonreferred youths. Hand-scored and computer scored pro-files are available. Latino Spanish YSR available.

Semistructured Clinical Interview forChildren & Adolescents (SCICA)The SCICA is for use by experienced interviewers. SCICAmaterials include a protocol of questions and probes for ages6-18; an observation and self-report form for rating what thechild does and says during the interview; and a profile forscoring ratings. The administration time is 60-90 minutes, de-pending on user options. The forms are scorable by the inter-viewer and observers. Scoring profiles are available for ages6-18. The syndrome scales are: Anxious, Anxious/Depressed,Withdrawn/Depressed, Language/Motor Problems, Aggres-sive/Rule Breaking Behavior, Attention Problems, Self-Con-trol Problems, and Somatic Complaints (ages 12-18 only);plus 6 DSM-oriented scales, Internalizing, Externalizing, andseparate Total Problems scales for Observation and Self-Re-port items. Hand-scored and computer-scored profiles are avail-able. The SCICA Module prints narrative reports and scoresfor critical items.

SCICA Training Video and SoftwareThe 90-minute training video shows 10-15-minute segmentsof 6 SCICA interviews. After watching a segment, traineesscore items on the SCICA Observation and Self-ReportForm. Trainees then use the SCICA computer scoring pro-gram to compare their ratings with ratings by experiencedraters on all items and the 8 syndrome scales. The programcomputes intraclass correlations measuring the agreementbetween the trainees’ ratings and ratings by experienced rat-ers. Trainees can practice rating each segment until theyachieve good reliability, as indicated by the computer pro-gram. A training manual is included with the video. Thetraining video and software come with the SCICA Com-puter-Scoring Starter Kit. Save $70! (See page 20.)

Adult Forms and Profiles (Ages 18-59)Adult Self-Report/18-59

Adult Behavior Checklist/18-59

The ASR and ABCL meet the need for economical, multi-informant, empirically based assessment of adults. They assessadaptive functioning and problems, including substance use.

Syndrome scales were derived from factor analyses of datafrom 4,628 respondents. In addition to syndrome scales, theforms are scored on adaptive functioning scales, substance-use scales, Critical Items scales, Internalizing, Externaliz-ing, and Total Problems. The forms are also scored on theseDSM-oriented scales: Depressive Problems, Anxiety Prob-lems, Somatic Problems, Avoidant Personality Problems,Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Problems, and Antisocial Per-sonality Problems. Separate norms are provided for eachgender at ages 18-35 and 36-59, based on a national prob-ability sample of 1,767 adults who had not received mentalhealth or substance abuse services in the preceding 12months. As illustrated in the Manual for the ASEBA AdultForms & Profiles, the ASR and ABCL can be used in manycontexts. An especially valuable application is to assess par-ents and other adult collaterals of children who receive clinicalservices. Parents who complete the CBCL for their childrencan be requested to complete the ASR to describe them-selves and the ABCL to describe their spouse or partner. You can then compare parents’ views of themselves withtheir views of their children. The ADM Ages 18-59 module
