Message from Peter DickeyIn 2005, the GAIA Foundation celebrated the commitment of our donors to expanding opportunities for environmental education and awareness building. The foundation was proud to engage the Pembina Institute on a contract basis to deliver innovative resources to audiences ranging from elementary students to industry leaders on topics such as the impacts of oil and gas development, renewable energy and climate change.

The year 2005 also provided an opportunity for our Board to reflect on the foundation’s structure and objectives, and undertake measures to expand the possibilities for supporting research and education initiatives to advance awareness of environmental issues. Our discussions have led to some exciting changes in 2006 — we welcome you to join us in our continuing discovery of the possibilities for “Earth Education.”

Peter Dickey is the GAIA Board President.

Changes for 2006Introducing The Pembina FoundationIn July 2006, the Pembina Foundation for Environmental Research and Education was officially established as a federal charitable organization. This occurred simultaneously with the dissolution of the GAIA Foundation for Earth Education, closing a chapter in our successful history of building awareness and advancing sustainable solutions for environmental issues. The Pembina Foundation opens a new chapter in

our work, as the foundation will continue to support innovative environmental research and education initiatives under the leadership of the former GAIA Board of Directors. As a charitable organization, the foundation will have increased capacity to engage donors in advancing solutions for a sustainable energy future through innovative research and initiatives that engage students, communities and decision makers. We look forward to continuing to build on the past success of the GAIA Foundation!

Projects and ActivitiesThrough the generous support of donors in 2005, the GAIA Foundation helped to strengthen awareness of environmental and global issues affecting Canadians and deliver resources to help individuals, communities and decision makers adopt more sustainable practices. The foundation’s projects were carried out through service agreements with the Pembina Institute. Using the institute’s expertise, the foundation addressed a range of timely issues and engaged youth and community members in educational activities.

The following projects and activities were undertaken in 2005:Greenlearning.caGreenlearning.ca, an innovative e-education program that puts provincial curriculum requirements first, was fully launched in Alberta in 2005. Since its initial release in 2004, the number of teachers registered to Greenlearning.ca has more than doubled and average monthly visitors to the website increased by 92%.

Greenlearning.ca’s Lights Off program is a strategic conservation action plan with measurable results for schools.

Re-Energy.caPeople visiting Re-energy.ca, a renewable energy and sustainable transportation edu-cation website, downloaded over 70,000 model plans each month—a 75% increase over 2004. Re-energy.ca is part of the Green Street program reaching 100 Canadian teachers and over 3,000 students in the 2005/06 school year.

Ontario Smart Growth and Community SustainabilityReports including Local Implementation of Smart Growth Policies in Ontario and Building Sustainable Urban Communities in Ontario made recommen-dations on how to advance Ontario’s progress in addressing smart growth and urban sustainability issues. The reports highlighted areas of progress such as reducing greenfield development, as well as the continuing gaps between the municipalities’ formal policies and the actual planning and infrastructure investment decisions being made by municipal councils. The recommendations led the provincial government to rewrite its land use planning laws to reduce automobile-dependant urban sprawl.

The Impacts of Oil SandsThe Climate Implications of Canada’s Oil Sands, released during the 2005 UN Climate Change Conference, provides the most comprehensive pro-jections of oil sands’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 2020 publicly available in Canada. It highlights the contradiction between the rush to exploit Alberta’s oil sands and the urgent need to reduce emissions. With over 40,000 downloads in the five weeks following its release, the report Oil Sands Fever: The Environmental Implications of Canada’s Oil Sands Rush also attracted a positive response from members of the pub-lic, media, government and industry. Its supporting multimedia website, www.oilsandswatch.org, provides access to these reports and additional information on the environmental impacts of oil sands development.

Nuclear Life Cycle Impact AssessmentOngoing research into the environmental impacts, risks and sustainability of nuclear energy in Canada will provide a life cycle assessment of nuclear energy production and assess its value as a strategy for mitigating climate change.

Canada’s Role in Addressing Climate ChangeThe Case for Deep Reductions was released before the 2005 UN Climate Change Conference. The report calls attention to Canada’s role in achieving the deep, long-term cuts in GHG emissions required to prevent the most dangerous impacts of climate change. By providing the scientific case outlining why Canada must reduce GHGs to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, as well as strong evidence of the technological and economic feasibility of these cuts, Deep Reductions establishes a basis for discussions on Canada’s path beyond 2012 — the end of the first Kyoto Protocol com-mitment period. Recognizing that Canadian industries will be operating

in an increasingly carbon-conscious environment, the report Future Financial Liability for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from New Large Industrial Facilities in Canada provides an assessment of the long-term business implications of regulated GHG limits. An assessment of the portfolio of policy and technology tools to be used in achieving deep reductions in GHG emissions is also available in the report Carbon Capture and Storage: A Canadian Primer.

Oil and Gas Development: Training and Capacity Building for Northern CommunitiesThe 2005 “Northern Oil and Gas and the Environment” workshop series included sessions for remote communities in the Inuvialuit region and youth-oriented workshops for the Arctic Indigenous Youth Alliance and the “Our Land, Our Future” forum in Yellowknife. The workshops provide participants from northern communities with quality information about the environmental and cumulative effects associated with oil and gas development through participa-tory activities and discussion with land owners, First Nations, oil and gas industry, environmental organizations and government.

Pembina’s workshops have provided northerners with useful information about the envi-ronmental impacts of oil and gas development in their regions.

Northern Oil and Gas Development ScenariosPeak into the Future: Potential Landscape Impacts of Gas Development in Northern Canada provides realis-tic scenarios of the extent and pace of development that could occur if known and potential gas reserves in three fields within northern Canada are developed. The report offers recommendations for reducing the potential environmental impacts.

Youth Environmental Leadership Support through the GAIA Foundation enabled a Master’s student in the Environmental Education and Communication program at Royal Roads University to work with the Pembina Institute in designing a leadership program that enables youth to pursue socially equitable and ecologically sustainable actions in their own lives and communities.

Alberta GPI Centennial UpdateTo celebrate Alberta’s centennial anniversary, the 51 indicators that make up Alberta’s Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) — the province’s first total well-being accounting system — were updated in 2005. The GPI uses social, economic and environmental indicators and a full cost-benefit accounting framework to mea-sure genuine progress. Both The Calgary Herald and QR77 Radio in Alberta ran multi-part series on the GPI covering such issues as crime and resource depletion.

Amy Taylor discusses the Genuine Progress Indicator on QR77 Radio.

Water, Oil and Gas in AlbertaIt is critical that energy development does not compromise watershed health, freshwater availability or groundwater resources in Canada. Yet the current use of water for oil recovery may affect the sustainabil-ity of Canada’s water supply. Ongoing research supported through the foundation is aimed at assessing the implications of the oil industry’s thirst for water and exploring possible solutions for eliminating the use of fresh water in fossil fuel extraction.
