Foundation Licence-The Tiree Trip

Although the actual delivering of the

Foundation Licence Course and sub-

sequent exam took place on the

weekend of the 17,h & 18,4 April

2004 the story behind it all actually

originates back to the 21" March

1997 when Tom lfylie GM4FDM

delivered a taik to the Cockenzie &

Port Seton Amateur Radio Club

about activating St l(lda, an island

which [es to the west of the Scottish

Outer Hebrides, for IOTA and

IOSA. It was this that sparked off a

few members of the radio club to do

something similar for the RSGB

IOTA contest that year. After lots of

deliberation the island of Tiree was

chosen and since then the Cockenzie

& Port Seton Amateur Radio Club

has gone back each year to take part

in the same contest and will be there

this year, all being wel,[ as they say.

For the IOTA people Tiree is EU008

and for those interested in IOSA it is

NH04.

\X4ry keep going back it is very sim-

pie, hospitaliry andagreat place to

run a contest from. The first two

years I was unable to go due to both

family and work commitments but I

certainly made my mind up I was

going the next year this was due to all

the stories that kept on being related,

not iust once but time and time

again. So annual leave was booked as

soon as I possibility could to ensure

it would happen. I remember coming

of the ferry on the Friday morning to

be met by some of the islanders say-

ing "Hi lads it must be radio time of

year","good luck for your contest",

"we'il catch up later on to see how

your doing", etc, etc. all this before

rve had even got off the pier. A cou-

ple of stories, as I see that I have

diverged well away from the original

story but I think they illustrate the

words of hospitaliry. On the first year

the contest station rvas erected about

100 yards away from the Tiree I-odge

Hotel in the sand dunes next to the

huge beach at Gott Bay. The contest

was in full swing and about22:30 in

the evening the then proprietor of

the hotel, sadly no longer with us,

carre across to the opefating tents.

Hi lads! he said, "are these botdes of

beer any good to you they are just

out ofdate by a couple ofdays and I

can't sell them", now that's a si-[y

question to ask our Iot and they were

subsequendy handed over. About an

hour later, the proprietor's daughter,

Elaine (now our host on the island)

came across with a huge tray of

chips, sausages, etc for everyone as

she thought we would be hungtl', as

we had missed the evening meal. The

cost? - absolutely nothing and no

matter what, no money would be

accepted. The same Elaine another

year about 04:00 in the morning de-

livered a full breakfast to the night-

shift operators and her comments

were, "I had to get up and make

Callum, her eldest son, his breakfast

before he \vent out to sea so I

thought I would make some extra for

you". There are m ny, many stories

to teU in fact too many to mention,

so you can see why we keep going

back vear after year.

So how did rve end up going this year

to teach the Foundation Licence,

well last year some of the group went

out a few days eady and set up the

stations for the IOTA contest and as

part of that a demonstration station

was set up using the callsign

GB2IOT to allow any of the island-

ers to come along and see rvhat ama-

teur radio is all about. other than

under the contesting banner. This

turned out to be a success as from

that our host Elaine asked about how

does one get a licence. This was duly

explained and the question then

came how do 'uve go about it. I then

made an offer that I was quite pre-

pared to come out to the island and

teach them. 'qWould you", she asked

and "yes" was my answer. I did ex-

plain though it would be early 2004

before I would manage but Elaine

said that would be ok.

I then contacted Elaine at the begin-

ning ofJanuary to see horv many

were interested and she eventually

responded that the total was eight.

All the necessary forms were filled

out, books for the course obtained

and then sent across to the island.

The duly signed forms that needed to

be signed were returned and with

them and all the subsequent required

paperwork sent to the RSGB. I must

admit the RSGB were very helpful

and prompt in returning the exam

papers as I had explained that I

needed them before leaving to go to

the island.

The day arrived to head off to Tiree,

this in itself is a journey as we live

150 miles from Oban the ferry port

and the ferry leaves at 06:00 in the

morning, so it mcans overnight trav-

elling. The group of us, Brian

MORNR (only going for the beer),

Cambell MM0DXC (main exam in-

vigilator), Ron GM4II(U (assistant

invigi-lator) and myself, Bob

GM4UYZ (the teacher) Ieft at 01 :00

and headed through to Oban. \)fle

arrived just after 04:00 at the ferry

terminal and waited in the car until

the terminal opened at04:45. Once it

opened ail our bags and a case with

all the course material were taken out

of the car and taken in. Cambell and

myself then left the others and then

parked up the car approximately 10

minutes away from the terminal away

from the "yellow lines". On return

we all bought our tickets and headed

off onto the ferry. The ferry departed

(Cantiaued on page 3)

(Continaedfnnpage )

at 06:00 from Oban, heads across the

Firth of Lome and then sails up the

Sound of Mull past Tobermory, now

made famous on BBC3 as Balamory,

then out into the Adantic Ocean

sailing past Coll and eventually affiv-

ing at Tiree at 09:30. The voyage

itselfis a very picturesque one and

one well worth doing if you have

time to spare.

On arriving at the island we were met

by one of the pupils, Eirwyn Grif-

fiths who took us to our host, Elaine

Wiliams, house where we stayed for

the duration. Typical Elaine, "you

must be starving so there are bacon

and sausage rolls ready", we tried to

tell her that we had already had a full

breakfast on tlre ferry, but it was just

a v/aste of time.

As we had arrived on the Friday and

the course not starting until the Sat-

urday moming, and after our

"second" breakfast we erected a 40M

dipole at Elaine's house and set up a

radio station in her lounge using an

FT100 and a tuner. This took us up

to just after 13:00 to compl€te, and

then we made z few contacts before

we headed of rvith Elaine to the

Tiree Learning Centre, where the

course was being held over the Satur-

dav and Sunday.

It certainly was worth the visit as the

room that Elaine thought we could

use turned out to be too small. Al-

though it seemed to be a major prob-

lem it really wasn't as we were able to

negotiate the Resources Rooms next

door, which were absolutely ideal.

The rest of the Friday was spent after

having an enor(nous meal and social-

ising in the local hotel. It w^s am^z-

ing the interest that was shown with

many people saying, "they hoped it

would all go well", "well done lads

for making the effort to come and do

this", etc.

On the Saturday moming we headed

off to the course venue to discover

that when we arrived we had only

one set ofkeys so Elaine h*d to go

back home and collect the other set.

Meanwhile we were at least able to

make a start on some of the setting

up. Elaine returned back within 15

minutes, I would make no comments

on the driving, especially on single-

ffack roads with passing places!!l!!!

I eventually got started at 09:30 with

one pupil down, as he was unable to

get across the day before from Coll.

\X/e really take things for granted on

the mainland on how easy it is get-

ting from A to B. You miss a ferry

on the islands and you have to wait

another day to get another. Eventu-

allyJohn arived when the ferry from

Coll came in about 1.5 hours late.

I spent some time later on going

through what he had missed which

allowed him to catch up. In the mid

afternoon it was the turn of the prac-

tical on-the-air sessions. This we did

with Ron GM4IKU and Brian

M0RNR using a VHF handheld back

at Elaine's whilst we used an FT100

connected to an aeial mounted on a

car outside. Glad to say that the ses-

sion went well in deed.

The next session was HF. Using

again the FT100 to an ATAS aerial

mounted on the car outside where

we made contact again with Ron and

Brian.

For this part of the exercise we were

hoping to contact some of the club

members back home but it turned

out to be unsuccessful although at

one time I did hear Landles

GM4XZZ just come out of the

noise. The band must have changed

as about an hour Ron and Brian had

ear[er contacted Willie MMjWZZ

who was with Landles. From our

perspective stations from England

were coming in at 59+ but sadly not

open to home.

Overall I was very pleased on how

they all conducted themselves on the

air. The on the air session was the

last for the day so after tidying up it

was back to our "mine hosts" where

we relaxed for a while before once

again being plied with an enonnous

meal. Finally it was once again up to

the local hotel to enjoy some local

hospital-ity, need I say more?

The Sunday was the second day of

t-he course plus the exam so once

again it was a prompt 09:30 start.

This time I was missing another pu-

pil Einryn Griffiths, as he had to

attend a Fire Training exercise up to

10:30. That is another thing about

the islands everyone does a multirude

of iobs and in Eirwyns case he is also

a fteman. It was an exercise that had

been rushed together the week be-

fore as the officer who delivers the

(Continued on page 4)

Foundation License Course

(Coninned.fron page 3)

training could only come across that

day. As I said to Eiruyn being a fire

fighter is far more important that

obtaining an amateur licence so if

you get back I will run through'uvhat

you missed before the exam. As it

turned out the exercise was at the

Aiqport a stones throw arvay and he

was back with us by 10:00. The

course continued and completed

before stoppingfor a quick lunch.

After the lunch there was chance for

evefyone to run thfough a couple of

dummy papers to give them chance

to get a feel for the qpe of questions

that would be asked. The results

',vere mixed with the odd failure by

one question so all rvas looking good.

The time for the exam came and I

handed over to Cambeli MMODXC

and Ron GM4IKU to carry out all

the necessary work.

Now came the tense part the mark-

ing off the papers where the resuits

were from a just pass to an excellent

pass. Those who had just passed

r.vere disappointed but as I said to

them a pass is a pass and it is that

what counts.

So congratulations go to Elaine $fiI-

liams, her sons Aran and Callum

Williams, Eirwyn Griffiths, Teatlach

McDonald, and the boys John Is-

accson, Jamie Beese and lasdyJoseph

!(illiams. This now increases the

island amateur populadon to nine

and I feel as well it isn't going to be

the last.

After the course and everyone had

gone we tidied up and when rve left

Elaine took us on a tour of round

Tiree delivering a very interesting and

informative history lesson of the

island. The evening we all went to

the hotel and had a meal before retir-

ing to the bar for our last night of

hospitality.

Monday came and it rvas time to

leave the island and say our goodbyes

to our host Elaine as she headed off

to work. Eirwyn picked us up and

delivered us to the ferry terminal to

catch the 12:1.5 ferry back to Oban.

After a very relaxing sail we arrived

back in Oban at 16:30, picked up the

car md then made our way home

arriving at20:30, all ready for a ear\

night in bed.

As for the weekend as well as being

enjoyable and a bundle oflaughs it

was successful from an amateur radio

point of view. I can see us going

back ro deliver another training

course, do rve need persuaded well

the short answer is a defrnite no, but

before that we will be back in July for

the RSGB IOTA contest so look out

for GM2T on IOTA EU008 or

IOSA NH04. See you all then on the

air.

Information

The Cockenzie & Port Seton Amateur Radio Club was

formed by Bob Glasgow GI{4AYZ in 1984, to help the

local amateurs get to know each othet.

Numbers have incteased steadilv over the yeafs and

now average about 20.

Far from being iust alocal club we have members com-

ing from the Borders, Dumfries, Strathclyde and Fife.

The Club meets on the {irst Friday of every month

(Second Friday ofJanuary) in the lounge ofthe Thorn-

ttee Inn on the old Cockenzie High Street from 7pm till

late.

The Club is run in a very informal way, there are no

fees, no real committee structure, iust a gtoup of like

minded people doing something they enioy!

This does not mean that we dontt do anything, we en-

tet (and win!) contests, train newcomers, hold talks and

video nights and hold a popular annualJunk Sale. Our

newsletter has won the PW Spotlight competition on

several occasions.

The Club supports the British Heart Foundation in

memory of a member who died ftom heart disease by

donating the profits from events we hold, we have

taised over f,9,436 since 1994.

The Club is affiliated to the Radio Society of Great Brit-

ain and holds the callsigns MM0CPS and GM2T which

are used for out contest and special event entries,

We have our own internet domain wwvr.cpsarc.com

and club members carr get their own

'[email protected]' email addresses. The club also

has a Yahoo! Group which is used to manage a mailing

list.
