THE COMPANYThe company

Continuous operation is the key word for AROS. It is thecompany’s field of activity, a sophisticated technology uponwhich the efficiency of every electrical system depends.AROS has over 70 years of experience in this highlyspecialized sector and is currently a leading company in thefield. But continuity is also AROS “trademark” asacknowledged by design and installation engineers: the will tostrive constantly to achieve the highest production standardsand to anticipate market demands. Thinking in this waybrought AROS to set up the Research and Development teamof about forty persons to better respond to the marketrequirements. The result is that today whoever thinks aboutemergency power supplies thinks AROS.

AROS was set up in 1935 and after just a few years established itself asthe leading Italian manufacturer of voltage regulators, transformers andpower supplies. In the fifties AROS was the first company in Italy tomanufacture ballasts for fluorescent neon lamps and became the Italianleader in the field of components for lighting. In the eighties it designed, developed and produced switching power supplies for IBM computers. The company thus acquired know-how in PWM (Pulse-Width-Modulation) technology that enabled it to enter the UPS sector. This isnow the most important field of activity for AROS, which has maintainedits leadership in voltage regulators and components.

AROS, a history of research and continuity.

RESEARCH Entering the Research and Development department meansentering the heart of AROS. Here users’ real problems are“filtered” by means of the latest technologies andtransformed into successful products. Environmentalsimulators, sophisticated analysis tools, CAD systems: superspecialized devices for super specialized design engineers topredict tomorrow’s needs today, needs arising fromdevelopments in electronics and market trends. AROSdedicates its greatest resources to this team and hasrecently boosted the power area. This both consolidates thestrength of its core business of Uninterruptible PowerSupplies (UPS), components and voltage regulators, whilemapping out its future course.

To understand the work carried out by the research team, just think ofthe technological “nodes” that are hidden behind the apparent functionallinearity of a UPS system. To provide a high level of efficiency, withstandstrong line interference, interact with surrounding systems that may notbe homogeneous, comply with complex international safety standards, minimize the level of interference emitted towards the mains and towardsthe environment and finally, offer a degree of reliability that is increasinglydemanded by new electronic systems.

Highly trained personnel and state of the arttechnologies lie behind every project.

NEWtechnologyAROS products are intended for sophisticated devices -delicate electronic systems needing protection - andsophisticated devices are required to design, develop andproduce them. AROS Research Centre is at the cutting edgewhen it comes to the synthesis and analysis of coolingsystems through the use of software for thermal analysisbased on computational fluid dynamics and infrared cameras. This is just one example of how AROS engineers andtechnicians use state of the art computer-aided technologiesto make AROS solutions increasingly competitive, not only interms of performance and respect for the environment, butalso as regards reducing operational costs.

AROS uses thermal analysis to study how the cooling properties inside adevice change by modifying parameters such as the size and footprint ofheat dissipators, the type and position of the fans, deflectors andventilation grids, and by eliminating the critical areas (caused by therecirculation or stagnation of air at high temperatures within the UPS). Allthis to achieve uniform ventilation, significantly increasing the safety andperformance of the system while retaining its compact size.

Intelligent devices. Intelligent men.

Why an Uninterruptible Power Supply?

Data centres, servers, LAN nodes and telecommunication systemsmust always be protected against possible problems in the powersupply. Sudden blackouts and variations in the mains supply may leadto system malfunctions and severe data losses. But even otherelectrical equipment can cause damage or inconvenience if there is abreakdown in the mains. Just think of the check-out systems in asupermarket, lighting systems and industrial production units, not tomention safety systems, pumping systems and automatic devices ingeneral.

The simplest and most effective way of coping with thesedisturbances is to install a UPS unit (UPS stands for UninterruptiblePower Supply). Acting as an interface between the mains and theloads, the UPS guarantees the continuity and the quality of theelectrical power supplied to the loads, whatever the condition of themains may be. In fact these systems stabilise the voltage perfectly, eliminating all disturbances. They even supply voltage when the mains fails, by means of a seriesof batteries which give a back up time that is generally sufficient toguarantee the safety of persons and of the system.

In order to decide which type of appliance is able to guarantee thebest level of protection, you must know the types of mains problemsthat can disturb your systems.

Power problems are causedby various sources such asdistribution network faults, system switching, weatherand environmentalconditions, heavy equipmentor simply just faultymaintenance.

CEI, CENELEC and IEC arethe recognizedstandardization bodiesrespectively at national,European and internationallevel. Such standardizationguarantees the compliancewith CE Directives.

Technical Standards

SafetyEN IEC 62040-1-1, EN 50091-1-1 are the reference standardsregulating the basic safety requirements which UPS equipment mustfulfil to grant users safety in restricted areas.EN IEC 62040-1-2, EN 50091-1-2 are the reference standardsregulating general and safety requirements for UPS used in locationswith limited access.

Electromagnetic CompatibilityThis is the capacity of equipment to work without being disturbed(immunity) and without disturbing (emisssion) other equipment due toelectromagnetic disturbances on electric wires and irradiated.EN 50091-2 is the reference standard which also defines the testingprocedures.

PerformancesThe reference document is the Performance Requirements EN 62040-3. It is a guide for a better understanding betweenmanufacturer and user since it defines which performance must bedeclared as well as the relevant testing methods. All AROS UPS’s have been designed and built in accordance with allthe above standards and therefore bear the mark.

Types of Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS)

On-Line Uninterruptible Power Supply (VFI)On this type of UPS, also known asa double conversion UPS, theinverter draws its power continuouslyfrom the rectifier (converter). Thecurrent is completely regenerated byits transformation from AC to DC andback to AC, guaranteeing a constantlevel of quality, regardless ofdisturbance on the mains powersource. By carrying out continuous doubleconversion, an On-Line UPSsignificantly attenuates electricalnoise, which might otherwisedamage a computer. When the ACinput supply is not within the voltageand frequency tolerances, the batteryis used to power the inverter. Theinverter continually supplies thecritical load with a true sinewavecurrent. If a converter/inverter failure occurs, the continuity of the load power canbe improved by activating the bypasssource using a transfer switch.

Types of Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS)

Line InteractiveUninterruptible Power Supply (VI)On this type of UPS the inverter isconnected in parallel to the AC inputand also charges the battery (interactiveoperation in reversible mode). When the AC input supply is not withinstrict amplitude and frequencytolerances, the load is powered by theinverter through the battery. The normal inverter output waveform isa stepwave or squarewave. This technique is rarely used for highpower ratings as frequency regulation isnot possible. Active Standby (or LineInteractive) technology is a recentdevelopment made possible by theadvent of microprocessors. The UPS isfully controlled by a microprocessorwhich monitors the quality of the mainspower supply and reacts to anyvariations. In the event of a powerproblem, the UPS transfers the load tothe batteries to supply stabilised power. It is increasingly frequent to add avoltage compensation circuit, called a“booster”, that is enabled in the event ofprolonged voltage drops.

Passive StandbyUninterruptible Power Supply (Off-line) (VFD)This type of UPS, also called Off-lineUPS, is connected in parallel to thenormal AC source. The current is filteredin order to attenuate the most frequentforms of disturbance. In the event of apower problem the UPS transfers theload to the batteries to supply stabilisedpower: the inverter only switches onwhen the mains fails or fluctuatesoutside the input voltage tolerances ofthe EMI filter or if it is fitted withAutomatic Voltage Stabiliser (AVS).

Apparent power (in VA or kVA)It is defined as:

PAPP =VX Ifor single-phase load

PAPP = V x I x √3

for three-phase loads

where V is the load voltage supplyand I is the current absorbed by theload in normal load conditions. This information is normally shown ondocuments and/or load nameplatesthough it may be shown as anoversized value.

Active power (in W or kW)It is defined as:

kW = kVA x cosϕ(where cosϕ means power factor PF).

The cosϕ value of loads is veryseldom indicated, therefore a correctUPS sizing requires measurementsof kVA absorbed by loads.Experience, anyway, shows thattypical loads of computer feature aPF between 0,65 and 0,8.

Considerations on themisleading concept of“computer power”In the definition of the UPS ratedpower, the parameter values, definedas “computer power”, “switchingpower”, “actual power”, power aparticular temperature value, etc. aresometimes indicated.Such arbitrary parameter values haveno relation with apparent power andactive power; they can be neitherquantified nor defined and thereforemust not be used for the correctsizing of the UPS.

Crest FactorA linear load absorbs a sinewavecurrent that shows an effective value(IEFF usually measured and declared)and a peak value (IPK). The CrestFactor value is defined as:

IPKCF = IEFF

The nominal value for a linear load isCF = 1,41. Most loads applied toUPS’s are non- linear load: theyabsorb distorted current with a CFvalue greater than 1,41 and requiretherefore higher peak currents thusresulting in an increased distortion ofthe output voltage than equivalentlinear loads. Directive EN62040-3,indicates a typical non-linear load asCF=3, used for UPS testing, whichmay be used in the absence of otherdata.

OverloadOverloads are temporary requestsfrom electrical equipment whichexceed regular operation absorption. They are caused by current peakswhich may occur when one or moreusers are switched on. In case theoverload exceeds the admissiblelimits the UPS guarantees the energysupply via the automatic bypass line. For “On line” UPS’s the transfer iseffected without any break in power(transfer time = 0 ms). The “bypass”is a safety device with independentprotection and auxiliary supply ableto supply the load independentlyfrom the UPS also when the UPS isswitched off or broken.

Input current harmonicsThe UPS battery charger rectifierabsorbs a distorted current containingharmonics that are multiples to thereference 50Hz frequency. Theseharmonics may cause voltage distortionwhich may affect the normal operationof non privileged user’s.

The harmonics level of AROS UPS'scomplies with the present directive.Howerver, in order to further reduce thepresence of these harmonics variuossolutions are available such as theinstallation of Active Filetrs (PowerFactor Controlled) or different Rectifierdesigns.

RuntimeThe batteries supplied with the UPS’sare valve regulated batteries (VRLA)known as sealed batteries with noelectrolyte top-up, very low gasemission, suitable for installations inoffices and public places with no needfor special precautions. Batteries arenormally supplied with the UPS andcan either be installed in the samecabinet or in additional ones. AROSguarantees the power supply runtimesspecifying the apparent load power andthe power factor.

Remarks about the misleadingconcept of “typycal autonomy”In defing the runtime it is often used theconcept “typical autonomy (or runtime)”which has nothing to do with the realruntime based on the 100% load valueexpressed in W or kW (active power). The runtime that AROS shows on all itsdocumentation have been calculaterdat 100% of the load.

Sag and SwellAny short term voltage decrease(sags) or increase (swell) for a timefrom half cycle to 3 seconds. It isnormally caused by the equipmentshutdown, circuit breaker operations, high peak current absorbed by theequipments, or short-circuit.

Consequences:The major effects may be the loss ofdata or the lights flicker, veryunpleasant for the people exposed tothese effects.

TransientsTransients are rapid, very highovervoltages of up to 20 kV. Theyare caused mainly by lightning (whichis random in its location, durationand amplitude) but also by faults onthe high-voltage network, theswitching of inductive loads or thepowering of highly capacitive loads.

Consequences:Transients destroy inadequatelyprotected equipment (melting ofwires, perforation of isolation inmotors, badly-timed release ofprotection devices, etc.).

Power quality and mains disturbance

Electronic equipment functionsproperly as long as the utility isavailable and with high quality.Unfortunately not always this ispossible because most of the powerquality events are caused by factorsbeyond the control of the DistributionCompany. These factors may occureither externally (in the networkdistribution system) or internally (inthe facility when the system islocated). External causes may be forexample storm, lightning, high wind, tree limb contact, constructionactivities etc, while the internalcauses may be switching of themachine, capacitor banks, fault ormaintenance activities.

Depending on the events the powerquality disturbances may vary intype, duration and intensity.

Typical power supply disturbancesthat cause major bad effects on yourload are listen below.

Power outagePower interruption for a time of morethan 3s is called an outage orcommonly “blackout”. This isnormally caused by atmosphericaccidents to the high voltagedistribution network or a failure in thepower supply equipment.

Consequences: - Computer applications

Complete system shutdown withloss of data, possible hardwaredamage and long periods ofemployee inactivity.

- Industrial applicationsHuge impact in the productionactivity with consequentproduction loss and/or unexpectedsafety consequence.

Blackout

Undervoltage It is a voltage reduction in amplitudefor a time between 10 ms to 1 s.expressed as a percentage from 10and 100% of the rated voltage. Thisis caused for example by shortcircuits in the resident distributionsystems or the large inrush current ofthe transformers.

Consequences:- Computer applications

Overheating of the electroniccomponents with consequentoperational breakdown.

- Industrial applicationsInstability of asynchronous motorsand loss of synchronization ofsynchronous motors, opening ofcontactors (voltage drop > 30%),power-off discharge lamps (voltagedrop > 50% for 20-40 ms) withsubsequent return of power afterseveral minutes and consequentoperational breakdown.

OvervoltagesOvervoltage is an increase in voltagefor a time of more than 10 ms.Overvoltages may be caused by thedisconnection of major loads(interruption in manufacturingprocesses of industrial companies, reduction in the speed of electricmotors, arc furnaces, rolling mills, etc.) or natural events such aslightning.

Consequences:Faults in all electric/electronicequipment (100%<overvoltage<150%);e.g. damage to boards, powersupplies, computers/servers, faults inlighting systems, etc.

Undervoltage

Sentry Multistandard

Quality power supplyON-LINE double conversion VFItechnology guarantees a filtered, stabilized and reliable voltage that is freefrom all mains interference(overvoltages, frequency variations, voltage drops).

Low consumptionAs well as the on-line operating mode,Sentry Multistandard can operate in:• Economy Mode

The UPS uses Line Interactivetechnology: the load is powered fromthe mains; the energy consumption isreduced with a subsequentimprovement in efficiency (98%).

• Smart Active ModeThe UPS automatically selects OnLine or Line Interactive operatingmode according to the quality of themains supply, by monitoring thenumber, frequency and type ofdisturbances at the mains powerinput.

• Stand-by-Off (back-up unit)With the mains available the UPS isnormally not powered andconsequently the power consumptionis almost zero. Only when the mainsfails or falls outside a preset range, does the inverter take over in 200 msusing power from the batteries. Thisoperating mode is suitable forEmergency Escape Lighting (CPSS -Central Power Supply System) as perstandard EN 50171. These modescan be programmed to suit therequirements of the user and the loadto be powered.

ExpandabilityThe units can be connected in parallelup to 8 units to increase poweravailability or redundancy. The single module or the system canbe expanded at any time following thepower demand without any influenceon the initial investment. Thanks to the peculiarity of the “HotSystem Expansion” feature, theadditional unit can be connected inparallel while the other units are on-lineand supplying regular power to theload. The new UPS is on-line and willreceive the updated informationautomatically.

High reliability The digital control of the applianceconsiderably improves its reliability, since a reduction in electroniccomponents lowers the likelihood ofbreakdowns. The parallel connection ofthe UPS up to 8 units exponentiallyincreases the reliability of the system. The parallel connection system has 2levels of redundancy: in the event bothredundant cables are lost only therelevant module will be disconnectedfrom the output bus bar, while the othermodules supply power to the load.

Operating flexibilitySentry Multistandard is a UPS with On-Line double conversion technology thatcan also operate in Line Interactivemode (Economy Mode). It can handlethe two architectures autonomouslythrough the Smart Active function. The Stand-By-Off function can be usedto transform the UPS into a back-upunit to supply power for emergencylighting.Sentry Multistandard can also be usedas a Frequency Converter, 50/60Hz orvice versa.

Maximum battery careTemperature is the greatest threat tobatteries; for this reason, SentryMultistandard monitors the temperatureof the battery and thereby controls thebattery charging voltage. An automatic battery test periodicallychecks the efficiency of the batteries. The batteries are not used duringmicro-interruptions (40 ms), since therequired energy is drawn from a groupof capacitors (BATTERY SAVING).This system extends the life of thebatteries. The Sentry Multistandard range alsoincludes deep discharge protectionfeature.

Maximum safety for personnelThe back feed protection deviceprevents any voltage back feed in theupstream distribution board, thusensuring the safety of the maintenancepersonnel.

Advanced communicationThe unit comes with Aros Watch &Save software as a standard feature. The software displays the mostimportant information such as the inputand output voltage, the load applied, the remaining back-up time, etc., in theform of bar graphs. It is able to provideinformation even in the event of afailure, to support the fault diagnostics.Watch & Save software can be used toprogram the automatic shutdown of allopen systems in the event of aprolonged black out.The UPS also contains the followinghardware interfaces:• RS232 serial port,• Dry contacts,• EPO (Emergency Power Off) contact

for UPS shutdown using the remoteemergency button.

Mimic panelThe mimic panel allows easy andintuitive operation of the UPS. It givesaccess to the most importantparameters: status and alarms, controlcommands, input, output, batterymeasurements (power, current, voltage, frequency and temperature) andsettings. The Sentry Multistandarddiagnostics system includes up to 128alarms or messages allowing preciseand detailed identification of any event.

Low Input Harmonic DistortionThe Power Factor Correction (PFC),standard on all models, guarantees theinput power factor level to 0,95 for anyload percentages so that it is ideal inconjunction with Motor Generator or ininstallations with other sensitive loads.

Sentry Multistandard is also availablewith built-in Active Filter designed toreduce the level of THDi to less than4% and to increase the input powerfactor up to 0,99.

Other benefits• Advanced technologies: Active Filter

is based on the IGBT’s Technologiescontrolled by the Digital SignalProcessor (DSP). DSP instantlymonitors and controls the inputcurrent absorbed by the UPS inorder to eliminate the unlikeharmonics and maintain the THDiless than 4 %.

• Maximum efficiency: thanks to theActive Filter, Multistandard has lowinput harmonics even at low loadsconnected at the output.

• Compact size: no addition footprint isrequired because the Active Filter isfitted inside the base Multistandardunit.

• Reduction of the neutral current: lessharmonics at the Multistandard inputreduces the neutral cable size andconsequently the installation costs.

• Maximum reliability: thanks to thisdesign solution any failure of theoptional Active Filter has no influenceon the power supplied to the load;the only consequence is the increaseof current harmonics level rejected tothe mains. MAXIMUM RELIABILTYFOR THE LOAD.

Sentry HPS

Quality power supplySentry HPS is an On-Line doubleconversion (VFI) UPS with filtered andstabilized sinusoidal output voltage.Sentry HPS is immune to theinterferences on the electric powersupply line as it has special input andoutput filters.

Maximum reliability and poweravailabilityThe digital control of the applianceconsiderably improves reliability, since areduction in electronic componentslowers the likelihood of breakdowns.Digital control is provided by themicroprocessor that, in the HPS series, controls all the internal parameters, thusincreasing reliability and performance. In parallel connections, digital controlensures balance of the currents, whichgenerally change over time due tophenomena such as vibrations andtemperature, between the UPS unitsand the exchange of information withno need for manual tuning. Sentry HPS has been designed so thatit can be connected in parallel evenafter the installation of the first unit. The power availability can be increasedthanks to various configurationsavailable such as the parallelconfiguration, the Dual Bus functionand the Dynamic Dual Bus system.

36

Page 40: 20032 Cormano (MI) - ITALY Ph. +39 02 66327.1 Fax: +39 02 ...tts-telecom.com/PDF/AROS/8kVA-6400KVA.pdf · 1 THE COMPANY The company Continuous operation is the key word for AROS

High EfficiencyIf required, the unit can work in ECOmode to increase efficiency up to 98%and consequently reduce energydissipation and costs. In this operatingmode the mains is the priority sourceand the load is switched over to theInverter only when the mainscharacteristics exceed the preset limits.

UPS for Industrial loadsSentry HPS with its strong overloadcapability, output galvanic isolation andlow harmonic current distortion, is theideal solution for industrial applications. Thanks to the high battery current, HPSSeries is suitable to work with largebattery banks as it can guaranteerecharging in 10 hours asrecommended by the batterymanufacturer.

Operating flexibilitySentry HPS is an uninterruptible powersupply with On-Line double conversiontechnology that can also operate inLine Interactive mode (Economy modefor units over 100 kVA). All powerratings of the HPS series can also beused as Frequency Converters 50 to60 Hz and vice versa .

Mimic panelThe mimic panel allows easy andintuitive operation of the UPS. It givesaccess to the most importantparameters: status and alarms, controlcommands, input, output, batterymeasurements (power, current, voltage, frequency and temperature) andsettings. The Sentry HPS diagnosticssystem includes up to 128 alarms ormessages allowing precise anddetailed identification of any event.

Maximum battery careOptimal battery management includes:• periodic battery test,• protection against deep discharge,• recharge temperature compensated.

Motor Generator friendlyThanks to the range of different UPSversions and to the input filter solutions,Sentry HPS Series modules offer lowharmonic distortion and high powerfactor at the input. This makes themideal for use in conjunction with theMotor Generator at the input. Onrequest, the HPS Series is providedwith a “Motor Generator kit”that will inhibit the battery rechargingand/or synchronization with bypass.

Maximum safety for personnelThe back feed protection deviceprevents any voltage back feed in theupstream distribution board, thusensuring the safety of the maintenancepersonnel.

Front accessSentry HPS has frontal access for allpower and electronic components, even in those configurations withinternal batteries. This reduces the floorspace required and consequentlyreduces the installation costs.

Advanced communicationAros Watch & Save software displaysthe most important information such asthe input and output voltage, the loadapplied, the remaining back-up time, etc., in the form of bar graphs. The software is able to provideinformation even in the event of afailure, in support of the faultdiagnostics. The Watch & Save software can beused to program the automaticshutdown of all open systems in theevent of a prolonged black out. SentryHPS can also operate with a networkagent for applications on LAN or WANnetworks. The UPS contains the followinghardware interfaces:• RS232 serial port,• Dry contacts,• EPO (Emergency Power Off) contact

for UPS shutdown using the remoteemergency button.

Remote Service SupportTELEGUARD is a remote trouble-shooting system that can signal anykind of unexpected event in real time.Any fault is immediately signalled, 24hours a day, 365 days a year, to theservice control centre, which can takeimmediate action either remotely or onsite. Plus, a report is providedperiodically, detailing all the mostimportant events that have taken placeduring the monitored period.

ExpandabilityThe units can be connected in parallelup to 8 units to increase poweravailability or redundancy. The single module or the system canbe expanded any time to suit powerrequirements without influencing theinitial investment. Thanks to the peculiarity of the “HotSystem Expansion” feature, theadditional unit can be connected inparallel while the other units are on-lineand supplying regular power to theload. The new UPS is on-line and willbe set up automatically.

39

Dual Bus SystemThe Dual Bus System powers thepriority loads from two independentsources.

This configuration increases theredundancy and availability level of amulti-module configuration. Each busmay consist of a single module or up to

8 modules in parallel, kept in synchroby the UGS (UPS Group Synchroniser).

Dynamic Dual Bus SystemTwo independent systems set in DualBus Configuration can be merged

together at any time for systemexpansion or maintenance. This provides a lot of flexibility in your

installation in case of maintenance orwhen it is necessary to change theredundancy level of both systems.
