Most people who were born in the U. S. do not speak a language other than English. So the majority of Americans are like David in the conversation, although their reason for not speaking another language may differ from his.

This monolingual aspect of the U. S. may be changing slightly. Recently multicultural education has become popular in schools and colleges. As a result, more and more students are taking course in languages other than English.
