FY2003Annual Report

An annual report provides the opportunity to reflect on the previous year, to measurethe ongoing progress, to review the Fraternity’s financial status, to celebrate accom-plishments, and to thank those many members who continue to support the organiza-tion. After several years of informal discussion, as well as encouragement from yourMarketing Program Director and input from your Editor, we present you with AlphaPhi Omega’s first Annual Report.

We feel honored and proud of the successful service goals we accomplished duringthe fiscal year of 2003, including the completion of 23,126 service hours duringNational Service Week. We had more than 2,000 participants in our APO LEADSprogram, and we have begun to focus on the needs of our alumni members. We con-tinue to grow and prosper with more than 350 active chapters, while embracing part-nerships with several national organizations, many of which view us as the leader incommunity service on college campuses.

I continue to be impressed with the generosity of our members as we recognizethe 2003 Torchbearers in this special summer edition. While I would like to see moremembers donating to our Fraternity, I’m glad to see an increase in the amount of theaverage gift. Travel to any college campus across the nation in which there is an activeAlpha Phi Omega chapter and you willfind members actively engaged in ser-vice, making their campuses and theircommunities better places in which tolive. Commitment to fostering a life-time of service to all people – that’s theAPO way!

Ask most any Alpha Phi Omegamember to name the first thing

that comes to mind when he or shehears the word “leadership” and you’llhear, “APO LEADS!” One might thinkthat this refers to the portion of theFraternity’s mission statement thatreads, “To provide opportunities for itsmembers and college students to devel-op effective leadership skills.” Andthat is correct, but there is more.

The phrase is actually the name ofthe leadership development program ofthe Fraternity, APO LEADS – APersonal Odyssey of Learning, Leadingand Serving. The APO LEADS pro-gram consists of five individual modu-lar components of leadershipdevelopment. Each component focuseson skills that will help participants tobe successful leaders and team mem-bers in Alpha Phi Omega and in life.At the completion of the series ofcourses, participants will have a set oftransferable skills that are applicable toAlpha Phi Omega, other campus orga-nizations, the working world, and thecommunity.

The five components of the APOLEADS program are:

■ LAUNCH: Launching your leadership development.

■ EXPLORE: Exploring your leadership strengths and potentials.

■ ACHIEVE: Achieving successthrough teams.

■ DISCOVER: Discovering yourmanagement strengths and skills.

■ SERVE: Serving the Fraternity and the world as a Leader.

Alpha Phi Omega members whocomplete the APO LEADS programare recognized for the dedication totheir own leadership development andfurthering the principles of theFraternity.

has been wellreceived throughout the Fraternity. Thus far, the program has included thefollowing participants:

LAUNCH – 1,451EXPLORE – 226

ACHIEVE – 343The fourth course of the program,

DISCOVER, was launched in January2004. This three-hour session focuseson strategies, including time and stressmanagement, assertive communica-tion, and self-motivation techniques. The final course, SERVE, will be avail-able in late July 2004.

FY2002-2003 Financial Summary

Alpha Phi Omega ended the fiscal year on a positive note.A number of factors contributed to this success: greater

than expected attendance at the New Orleans NationalConvention; a tremendous effort by our National Board,Section Chairs, and other volunteers to clean up our mem-bership reporting; the fortitude shown by the NationalConvention to make tough, sound decisions regarding ourstill incredibly low membership fees; and the most generousgiving ever by Fraternity alumni, students, and friends, which allowed the Fraternity to exceed its FY2002-2003Annual Fund goal of $130,000. Additionally, theEndowment was most fortunate to receive a $250,000 gift in the form of a Charitable Gift Annuity.

Eighteen $500 scholarships were given from the MackScholarship Fund, while 11 youth service projects were fund-ed from the Jadel Youth Service Program.

The charts below provide a graphic picture of theFraternity’s revenue sources and expenses. You will see thatour membership fees make up the largest portion of our rev-enue (45% of the total). Program Services (services to chap-ters, petitioning and interest groups) command the largest

relative proportion (59%) of our expenses. We should takepride in the fact that we are not balancing the Fraternity’sbudget on the backs of our student members. Alpha PhiOmega’s general administrative expenses remain at 9%, anexcellent figure in the world of not-for-profit organizations.

This is wonderful news and we should be proud of ouraccomplishments in FY2002-2003. However, we cannot reston last year’s laurels. The Fraternity must continue to pushforward with generous giving, accurate and timely reporting, and prompt submission of membership dues (AAMD).

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone whoplayed a role in the Fraternity’s success this past year, particu-larly to Brother Bob London and the staff of the NationalOffice.

Few things are more compelling intoday’s hectic, bottom-line world

than the immense power of thosewho strive to serve their college cam-puses, their communities andhumanity in the name of Leadership,Friendship and Service. Those whoseek membership in the Fraternity thatis Alpha Phi Omega believe in thispower — the power that evokes a senseof commitment, the power thatembraces the spirit of volunteerism.

Memories of youth live deep withinour souls. The question arises, “Domembers leave Alpha Phi Omega oncethey graduate? Is it only a college expe-rience?” People do move on with lifeexperiences such as careers and family, but the deep sense of commitment to acause, of knowing that volunteering forservice to others helps to make a differ-ence in people’s lives, remains embed-ded in the hearts of APO memberseverywhere. At some point in ourmembers’ lives, these experiences trans-late into fostering better human rela-tionships and more well-roundedcommunities. Alpha Phi Omega mem-bers know that their college experiencewill be magnified a thousand-foldbecause they took the time to partici-pate in activities that made a difference.

There are many Alpha Phi Omegaalumni who still maintain an activeconnection with the Fraternity — byvolunteering as a committee member,Chapter Advisor, Section Staff member,Section Chair, or National Board mem-ber; through monetary gifts to theFraternity or to the Alpha Phi OmegaEndowment Trust; by receiving thequarterly issue of the Torch & Trefoil.Alpha Phi Omega is blessed with alum-ni who donate countless hours of theirtime and talents, and, at the same time, their treasure. Students in Alpha PhiOmega benefit from the guidance andwisdom of alumni who have comebefore them. Being an alumni volun-teer is a wonderful way to provide atangible example of Leadership,

Friendship and Service to students. In addition to volunteering time

and talents, Alpha Phi Omega alumniare generous with gifts of treasure. JackJadel (Zeta Kappa ’50, Bowling GreenUniversity) believes that, “Alpha PhiOmega provides thevehicle during collegeyears that instills instudents a sense ofcommitment to com-munity service that cancontinue long aftergraduation.” Throughstrong alumni giving, the Fraternity can leverage this ability toenable college students to actively seekto continue service to their communi-ties throughout life.

Jack recently gave a $250,000 Two-Life Immediate Charitable GiftAnnuity to the Alpha Phi OmegaEndowment Trust. This type of chari-table gift vehicle is a win-win for theEndowment Trust and for Jack and hiswife, Louise. The Endowment Trustbenefits from the interest earnedthrough the Annuity, and Jack and hiswife receive income during their life-time. Upon the death of Jack and hiswife, the remainder of the Gift Annuitywill pass to the Alpha Phi OmegaEndowment Trust, which provides sup-port to the Fraternity.

In addition to gifts of cash, AlphaPhi Omega donors utilize a variety ofgiving options. Dave O’Leary (Kappa’83, Carnegie MellonUniversity) and LisaCovi, Ph.D. (Kappa ’81,Carnegie MellonUniversity) have madegifts of appreciated secu-rities to the Fraternity.

In doing so, Dave

and Lisa have provided wonderful giftsto the Fraternity by using appreciatedassets. They expressed their thoughtson giving to Alpha Phi Omega thisway, “We choose tocontribute both timeand money to AlphaPhi Omega because theFraternity provides suchan excellent opportuni-ty for college studentsto learn and developkey life skills and thehabit of serving others.”

Beth Tom, M.D. (Iota Phi, ’79,University of California at Davis),Alpha Phi Omega Marketing ProgramDirector and David Overhauser, Ph.D.(Alpha Gamma, ’81, PurdueUniversity), feel thatcontributions to AlphaPhi Omega are criticalto the Fraternity’sfuture growth.

Beth feels that,“Stewardship is theservant leadershipcharacteristic thatimmediately hits home with me. I owemy professional success and my contin-ued personal growth to Alpha PhiOmega. I volunteer my time because Iknow how important personal contactwith alumni was for me. I also knowthat it takes money to increase andimprove support and services to ourchapters and members.”

David sees gifts toAlpha Phi Omega as anopportunity to leverageservice. “As each of usmoves through steps inlife, we need to findoptimal ways to leverageour impact in service

to others. In the past I advised chap-ters, but with a new family and busi-ness, the best way for me to supportAlpha Phi Omega at this time isthrough financial support so thatFraternity officers can focus their time on leadership, programs and initiatives rather than annual budgetfund raising.”

One may ask, “What is the differ-ence between the Annual Fund and theEndowment Trust?” The Annual Fundsupports the day-to-day operatingexpenses of the Fraternity. It providesmuch-needed revenue for things suchas chapter services, membership recordsand operating funds for the NationalOffice. Chapters receive supplies and

materials, program materials are devel-oped and taught, and the NationalOffice ensures communicationthroughout the Fraternity.

Many donors take advantage ofcorporate matching gift programs.Depending on the corporation, employers may match employee chari-table contributions dollar-for-dollar oras a percentage of donations made. Ifdonors to Alpha Phi Omega’s AnnualFund choose to participate in theiremployers’ matching gift programs, those contributions are counted towardTorchbearer status. Many donors havebeen able to double their contributionsto the Annual Fund through corporatematching gift programs.

The purpose of the Alpha PhiOmega Endowment Trust is to providelong-term benefits for the goals andperpetuation of the Fraternity. This isaccomplished by utilizing the interestearned from the principal in theEndowment Trust for appropriatefinancial support, such as new pro-gramming. Donors are asked to con-tinue their Annual Fund gifts inaddition to providing gifts to the

Endowment Trust. Gifts to theEndowment Trust ensure that AlphaPhi Omega’s legacy will burn brightlyacross college campuses throughout thenation long after our life’s work is com-pleted.

A gift of Life Membership is a greatway that students can participate ingrowing the Endowment Trust. A stu-dent’s cost for Life Membership is only$50. Alumni can become Life Membersfor only $100. Life Membership inAlpha Phi Omega is an opportunity formembers to financially support thelong-term stability of the Fraternity. Itshould be noted that student memberswho purchase Life Memberships arestill required to pay Annual Active

Membership Dues (AAMD’s). Incomefrom Life Member investment can beused to provide enhancements to spe-cific Fraternity programs, capitalimprovements and other long-termgoals. Those who invest in LifeMembership receive a Life Memberlapel pin, a Life Member certificatesuitable for framing, a wallet-size LifeMember card, and a lifetime subscrip-tion to the Fraternity’s quarterly publi-cation, Torch & Trefoil.

Why give to Alpha Phi Omega? Alumni have the power to ensure

that Alpha Phi Omega continues toexpand its values of Leadership,Friendship and Service throughout thenation. Our gifts provide solid financialfooting for the Fraternity. Those whocame long before us created the flamethat today burns brightly as our belovedFraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. It is upto us to ensure that the flame continuesto burn for future generations of AlphaPhi Omega members to advance theprinciples of Leadership, Friendship andService for their campuses, their com-munities, and humanity.

One has only to look at APO’sstunning record of service to see theevidence of thousands of college stu-dents who took the time to make a difference. In 2003 alone, Alpha PhiOmega members contributed 23,126hours of service during NationalService Week, performed 4,663 hoursof service during Spring Service Dayand, to date, have had more than 2,000participants in APO LEADS.

Outright GiftsGifts of Cash – the simplest, most frequently used method of providingoutright support for Alpha Phi Omega, whether currency, personal check orcredit card authorization. Donors may use the Giving Envelopes in each issueof the Torch and Trefoil to mail contributions, as well as the Spring AnnualFund pledge card and reply envelope. Note: Look for the fast, easy conve-nience of online giving to be available before the end of 2004!

Corporate Matching Gifts – allow donors to double (or in some caseseven triple) their support to Alpha Phi Omega by using employer matchinggift programs. Donors should check with their employer’s Human Resourcesoffice to request the appropriate forms to begin this program.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities – include such vehicles as marketablestocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, or IRAs. Appreciated securities offer awin-win situation for both Alpha Phi Omega and donors: APO receives a won-derful charitable gift and, in many cases, donors may receive substantial taxbenefits.

Life Memberships – are held and invested by the Endowment Trust. LifeMembership gifts provide a way for both students and alumni to contribute tothe Endowment Trust. Students may purchase Life Memberships for only$50; alumni Life Memberships are $100. A lifetime subscription to the Torchand Trefoil is included as a benefit of Life Membership.

Deferred GiftsLife Insurance – is a great way to make a deferred gift to Alpha PhiOmega. Think you are too young to make a gift to APO? Many organiza-tions now offer life insurance as an employee benefit. Donors, whether just

starting out in first jobs or as seasoned employment veterans, may designateAPO as a beneficiary on these insurance policies. Of course, individuals maypurchase life insurance on their own and designate APO as a beneficiary.

Wills/Bequests – are easy ways to make deferred gifts to Alpha PhiOmega. If donors are considering or have listed Alpha Phi Omega as a bene-ficiary in a will, or are planning to leave a bequest to Alpha Phi Omega, please inform the National Office so that we may include this information asa part of donor giving records. Donors may leave a percentage of theirestate or a specific dollar amount as a charitable gift.

Charitable Gift Annuities – are contracts by which donors give cash ormarketable securities such as stocks or bonds (including mutual funds) toAlpha Phi Omega. In exchange, donors or their designees will receive fixedpayments for life. Gift annuities offer several distinct advantages for thosedonors who qualify to give this type of gift: guaranteed income for life, taxdeduction savings, partial tax-free income, potential capital gains tax savingsand, most important, the personal satisfaction of making a gift of lastingsignificance. Donors should consult with their estate planning advisorswhen considering charitable gift annuities.

Charitable Remainder Trusts – provide income to donors or other benefi-ciaries for life, leaving the remainder to Alpha Phi Omega at the end of thetrust. Donors should consult with their estate planning advisors when considering charitable remainder trusts.

Charitable Lead Trusts – provide income to Alpha Phi Omega for a setterm of years, after which the remainder may be transferred to donors’ families or heirs. This arrangement also provides a charitable deduction todonors for APO’s income interest and, under the proper circumstances, canallow donors to pass property to family members at a greatly reduced estateor gift tax cost. Donors should consult with their estate planning advisorswhen considering charitable lead trusts.

Your Gift is Appreciated!
