FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I required to buy all the books?AIMR does not require candidates to purchase all books used inthe curriculum, but we strongly believe that studying the prescribed curriculum is the best way to prepare for the exami-nations. Remember that the examinations are developed direct-ly from the curriculum and are consistent with the LearningOutcome Statements (LOS) prescribed by AIMR. There is nosubstitute for studying the original material.

If I am a candidate, am I also an AIMR member? No. Upon passing the Level III examination, candidates whowish to earn the CFA charter must first apply for membership in AIMR and an AIMR Member Society or Chapter if one is locat-ed within 50 miles (80 km) of candidate’s place of business. When enrolling for Level III, AIMR strongly urges you to applyfor membership in AIMR and an AIMR Member Society orChapter so that your charter will not be delayed after you passthe Level III examination. You will find more information onAIMR membership on the AIMR Web site at www.aimr.org.

What if I do not have 36 months of acceptable work experiencetowards the CFA charter when I register for the CFA Program? As long as you have met the entrance requirements for the CFAProgram, you are eligible to sit for the examinations. Three yearsof acceptable work experience must be accrued before you can

earn the charter. Work experience can be accrued before, during,or after passing Level III.

I’m calling for my boss. Can you tell me if you have received hercandidate application and if she has been accepted? No. Candidate information is not released to individuals otherthan the candidates as noted in AIMR’s privacy policy.

Since AIMR has a no-refund policy, may I roll my enrollmentfees to the next examination date?Candidates cannot carry forward (defer) enrollment fees. Inaddition, registration or enrollment fees cannot be transferredfrom one applicant/candidate to another applicant/candidate.

When will I receive the examination results?Level I results are usually distributed within 60 days of theexamination date, and Level II and III results within 90 days. Therefore, your address, including your e-mail address, must becurrent at all times.

STUDY ADVICE FROM NEW CFA CHARTERHOLDERS

“Start studying early. That way, you can cover the volume ofwork in necessary detail. While courses and study guides areuseful for condensing the large amount you have to know, youshould not use them as a replacement for doing the readings.Cover all the readings in sufficient time. Then spend lots oftime doing the practice exams/past papers.”

~ Tom Brodie Mann, CFAPortfolio Manager, European EquitiesCredit Suisse Asset ManagementLondon, United Kingdom

“The strategy I followed in preparing for the CFA Program wasto read the material first. Then I followed the outline and wrotedown all I could about every topic from the books. Once I gotthrough the outline I began working practice tests. As the examgot closer I focused only on the material I was still missing ques-tions on. It worked really well!”

~ Elizabeth M. Painter, CFAVice PresidentPainterFinancialLouisville, KY, USA

“My strategy was to commit to a study schedule that was acrescendo until exam time. I would start with studying only afew days in January, committing to three evenings a week inFebruary, and then every evening in March. In April and May, Iforced myself to study for two hours each night during the weekand then three to five hours on each weekend day. I also madesure to allocate time on the weekend for recreation so that I didn’t lose focus during my study hours.”
