Throughout the last decade, Loyola Marymount University's Sullivan Field has served as an official training site forsome of the world's greatest soccer teams. Not to mention, a frequent practice site for various Major League Soccer

teams when visiting Los Angeles to face the LA Galaxy. In addition to hosting the best in the world, Sullivan was a true “advantage” for the Lions in 2000. The Lions were 6-3

(.667) at Sullivan Field last season. The 1994 FIFA World Cup, the world's largest single-sport event, was played over a 31-day span between June 17 and July

17 in nine different venues throughout the United States. Sweden, Italy and Argentina were among the teams that prepared forcompetition at LMU prior to their final matches.

Four years later, LMU once again welcomed soccer teams from many different nations. The field was used as a practice sitefor the World Cup exhibition Gold Cup Tournament.

Most recently, the Lions’ home field served as the training facility for the 1999 Women’s World Cup heldin June and July. LMU was host to Italy and Nigeria as the two teams prepared for the international com-petition. In addition, the Los Angeles Galaxy trains at Sullivan Field in the offseason and the field was thepractice site of the South Korean National Team last spring.

One of the outstanding young minds in collegesoccer, Gregg Murphy begins his sixth season

as head coach of the LMU women's soccer pro-gram.

Murphy, who assumed coaching responsibili-ties in July 1996, came to LMU after serving a suc-cessful stint as head coach of both the men's andwomen's programs at Chapman University inOrange, Calif. He boasts a wealth of experience asboth a player and a coach.

Murphy’s success as a coach, and the success ofhis players on the field, has brought unparalledsuccess to LMU. His teams have seen even greateraccomplishments with each passing season. Thepast four seasons the Lions have been almostunbeatable at Sullivan Field, winning 66 percent oftheir games (25-7-4). This past year he enjoyed the100th win of his career against UNLV, during thefirst game of the season. He led the Lions to theirbest-ever finish in conference history, including ashutout victory against nationally ranked SantaClara (No. 22). They finished the season ranked inthe WCC ahead of Santa Clara and the Universityof San Diego, who both earned a trip to the NCAATournament. In 1999, Murphy led the Lions to a13-6 mark that included a “top 20”national ranking at No. 19. In addi-tion, four Lions were named to all-con-ference teams. In 1998, the Lions post-ed their best record ever at 12-2-5, notlosing a game at home. In that season, for the first time in LMU women’s soc-cer history, the squad was rankedamong national leaders in three differ-ent categories (No. 3 in shutouts pergame-0.68, No. 9 in team defense-0.58GAA, No. 23 in winning percentage-76.3).

Off the field, Murphy continues tostress the importance of developing acomplete student-athlete. His 1997squad was honored by the LMU athlet-ic department in the spring of 1998 forhaving the highest team cumulativegrade point average (3.379 GPA), andthen repeated the feat the followingyear. The Lions again finished the1999-00 and 2000-01 academic yearswith impressive cumulative team GPA’sending the years with, 3.075 and 3.14,marks respectively.

Murphy came from Chapman, hisalma mater, where he became the full-time coach of the women's program in1990. He gradually built the programinto one of the most successful in the

region. He guided the team to its first winning sea-son in 1992 and followed with four consecutivewinning campaigns. The 1994 squad finished witha 13-6 overall record competing as an NCAADivision III independent, while the 1995 squadposted a school-best 13-5 record and was rankedthird in the West Region.

On the men's side, Murphy led the Chapmanprogram to even more dramatic improvementseach year. He inherited a struggling program in1990, but increased its win total each season, cap-ping the program's rise with a 17-4-1 record and atrip to the 1995 NCAA Division III Final Four. Hismen's teams, which were ranked among the WestRegion's top-three squads in his last three seasons, captured the 1995 West Regional championship. For his efforts, Murphy was named the 1995 NCAAWest Regional Coach of the Year.

Murphy built his Chapman teams around play-ers who were able to balance student-athleteresponsibilities both in the classroom and on thesoccer field. His squads consistently had amongthe highest grade point averages in the athleticdepartment, yet his recruiting techniques helpedland numerous all-state, all-region, and even U.S.National Team players.

Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Murphyestablished rich ties to Chapman as a player. Afour-year letterwinner (1981-84) for the Panthers,he earned all-conference honors three times andAll-America honors twice. In 1984 he played for

the West Regional team and was named an alter-nate on the U.S. National Team. He remains amongChapman's career leaders with 24 goals, 12 assists, and 60 career points. Upon graduation, Murphyplayed two seasons of professional soccer for theLos Angeles Lazers reserve team of the MajorIndoor Soccer League (MISL).

With far-reaching contacts in the soccer world,Murphy holds a USSF National “A” CoachingLicense. He served as an Olympic DevelopmentProgram (ODP) state coach (U-16) from 1994-97and a U.S. Soccer Regional Assistant Coach (U-17)in 1997. In addition, Murphy was a member of theevaluation staff for the Los Angeles Galaxy of theMLS (Major League Soccer), and served on theInner City Program committee with the 1994 FIFAWorld Cup. He served as a technical advisor forthe United States Soccer Federation during the1999 Women’s World Cup. He’s currently the headcoach for the U-16 regional team.

Murphy originally began his head coachingcareer at the prep level at Santa Ana Foothill HighSchool (1986-88) and then served as an assistant atAnaheim Canyon High School (1988-90).

In the five years under head coach GreggMurphy, the Loyola MarymountUniversity women’s soccer program

continues to find ways to improve from oneseason to the next. And after the 2000 cam-paign, the Lions have a West CoastConference championship in site for theupcoming 2001 season.

The Lions finished 2000 with a 12-6-1record and an all-time best 5-2 mark in theWCC. The second place finish was the bestever in a conference that is ranked fourthby the NCAA in the entire nation and sawthree teams advance to the 2000 NCAAChampionship, one of which advanced tothe Final Four (Portland).

The Lions defeated both NCAATournament qualifiers San Diego (for thefirst time in program history) and SantaClara (who was ranked 22nd in the coun-try) from the WCC, and added a non-con-ference winagainst Xavierwho alsoadvanced to thetournament.

“We had avery successfulseason last yearand we continueto find ways tobetter our-selves,” saidMurphy, whohas a 53-33-8overall record atLMU. “You lookat our confer-ence and threeteams advancedto the NCAAtournament. Webeat two of thoseteams and addeda win againstanother teamwho went to thetournament. Weonly lose threestarters from last year and we go into thisseason with the expectation to win the con-ference.”

This expectation stems from 20 return-ing players, including eight seniors, that allcontributed to last year’s team. “We havethe experience and the leadership needed

to set the level of expectations that we havecoming into this season,” said Murphy, who has accounted for all but 14 of thewins in the eight years of the program.“The West Coast Conference is one of thetoughest in the country and it continues toget better every year. Almost anyone in thisconference could have a chance to win thetitle this year. That is how balanced andtough this conference is.”

Creating the bulk of the Lions’ experi-ence heading into the 2001 season will bethe defense, anchored by three seniors thathave a combined 159 games of experience.Heather Nelson (Def., 5-7, Sr., YorbaLinda, Calif.) is back as a fifth-year seniorafter serving a medical redshirt last yeardue to a torn ACL in May of 2000. Nelson,an honorable mention all-conference selec-tion in 1999, leads the Lions’ defense with56 games played and is joined by Shaina

N i s h i m o t o(Def., 5-6, Sr.,Honolulu, HI)with 54 gamesand JuliePrunk (Def., 5-6, Sr., Littleton,Colo.) with 49.

“ W ehave a well-organized, vet-eran defensethat will be astrong aspectto our gamethis season,”Murphy said.“Heather had avery impres-sive spring andshe played veryaggressive. Youwould havenever knownshe was recov-ering fromACL surgery. She along with

Shaina and Julie will see a lot of playingtime in the defense.”

Benefiting from the Lions’ experienceddefense will be junior goalkeeper ElizabethSkhal (GK, 5-9, Jr., Moorpark, Calif.), whowill have the duty of filling the shoes ofthree-time all-conference goalkeeper Tracy

Sharp. Skhal played in four games last sea-son, earning two starts. She finished withfive saves and a 1.17 goals against average.

“Beth is a very good goalkeeper and weare excited to have her,” said Murphy. “Shehad a very solid spring and has improvedher game tremendously over the last twoseasons in preparation to take over as astarter. She has the potential to be one ofthe top goalkeepers in the conference, aswell as the region.”

The Lions main objective during thispast spring season was twofold; first, tobecome more dynamic in the final third, and second, to become more efficient inand around the box.

“Our main objective this past spring wasto create dangerous scoring opportunitiesin our offensive attack,” said Murphy. “Lastfall we dominated almost every game butwere not efficient enough in front of thegoal.” The Lions averaged 1.35 goals pergame in 2000, a stat that Murphy hopes toincrease in 2001. Of the returning playersthat received all-conference accolades, allplay on the forward or midfield lines.

“We have to create more opportunitiesand become much more efficient offensive-ly,” Murphy said. “Our schedule this seasonwill limit our opportunities. It is importantthat when we have those chances, we takeadvantage. We worked really hard on thatand our offense had a very good spring.”

Second-team all-conference selectionJill Dobens (F, 5-6, Jr., Torrance, Calif.),who had eight goals and 18 points as afreshman, and honorable mention selectionErica Florez (F, 5-6, Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.),who averaged 24 points in her first twoyears at Iowa State, combined for six goalsin 2000. Marra (F, 5-4, Sr., Torrance, Calif.) to leadthe Lions’ offense this season.

Looking to create more offensivechances, sophomore Shari Nishikawa (F,5-2, So., Kaneohe, HI) will be moved fromdefender to the forward position. As afreshman, Nishikawa finished with threepoints and was a first-team all-conferenceselection, and third-team all-region. She isjoined by midfielder Laura Trask (MF, 5-6,So., El Cajon, Calif.) to round out theLions’ four returning offensive players tohave earned all-conference accolades.Trask earned second-team all-conferencehonors.

“We have the goal scorers to put alot of goals on the scoreboard,” saidMurphy. “But we have to finish ouropportunities.”

GOALKEEPERS

Junior Beth Skhal is the goalkeeperof the Lions’ immediate future. She hasbig shoes to fill in replacing TracySharp, a three-time all-conferenceselection and former All-American.However, Murphy thinks she is morethan up to the task. “Beth has the skills, athleticism and the work ethic tobecome the best goalkeeper LMU hasever seen,” said Murphy.

Behind Skhal is redshirt sophomoreAutumn Moody (GK, 5-7, So.,Lakeside, Calif.), who has also spenttwo seasons learning the game playinga backup role to Sharp. The Lions’ alsosigned Kelly Yukihiro (GK, 5-7, Fr.,Santa Ana, Calif.) to add depth to theposition.

DEFENSE

If you are looking for experience onthe 2001 women’s soccer team, you willfind it on defense. Skhal’s job in the netfor the Lions will be much easier thanks tothe play of one of the most experienceddefenses in the country.

Coming off a medical redshirt, seniorHeather Nelson will be back for her finalyear leading the Lions’ defense. An all-con-ference honorable mention in 1999, herfinal season of play prior to her torn ACLin May of 2000. Nelson will be joined byseniors Shaina Nishimoto and Julie Prunk. With more playing experience than anyother three-player combination on thefield, the Lions will look to their defensefor leadership.

The Lions defense gets even deeper withsecond year players Jamie Shoma (Def., 5-5, So., Honolulu, HI) and Jennifer Cefalia(Def., 5-6, So., Newport Beach, Calif.).

Shoma had a solid spring and will competefor starting time at left back. Cefalia alsohad a solid spring for the Lions, and willalso compete for a starting position as acentral defender.

Juniors Annie Beltran (Def., 5-3, Jr., SanJose, Calif.) and Paige Lowry (Def., 5-5, Jr.,Leucadia, Calif.) each bring two years ofcollegiate soccer experience to the Lions’defense. In addition, incoming freshmanKylie Beren (Def., 5-6, Fr., San Ramon,Calif.) and converted midfielder JenniferPollock (MF, 5-7, Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif.)will give the Lions added depth and will

have an excellent opportunity to growunder the experienced defense. FreshmanSara Aldama (Def., 5-7, Fr., Redlands,Calif.) will most likely sit out her first yearon a medical redshirt due to a torn ACL.

OFFENSE

Entering the spring, the Lions’ offensewas the biggest question in their quest fora WCC title. The Lions will look to putmore pressure on the net and take bettercare of their opportunities when presented. In order to kick start the offense, first-teamall-conference selection Shari Nishikawa, asophomore, will be moved from left back tomidfielder to take advantage of her abilityto create goal scoring opportunities.

The Lions have plenty of other offensiveweapons in addition to Nishikawa. Juniorand two-time all-conference selection JillDobens had one of her best springs andwill look to get back to the eight-goal sea-son she had as a freshman. Erica Florez, who transferred to LMU from Iowa State asa junior, scored big goals in league playdown the stretch. She averaged 24 points aseason with Iowa State. Senior AllisonMarra has scored five goals in two previ-ous seasons with the Lions and will be abig part of the aggressive attack.

In the midfield, Myka Peck (MF, 5-3, Jr.,Bakersfield, Calif.) has developed into thequarterback on the field and as a captainwill become a field general for the Lions.Sophomore Haleigh Roach (MF, 5-4, So.,San Juan, Calif.) had a solid spring andwill use her great passing ability to readthe opponents defense and find the for-wards. Coming off an injury-plagued sea-son as a freshman, Roach is expected tohave a breakthrough sophomore year.

Another sophomore who had a greatrookie campaign is Laura Trask (MF, 5-6,So., El Cajon, Calif.). She finished withthree goals and seven points in 2000 andher explosive speed will create havoc onopposing defenders. Her compliment issenior Amanda Shellenberger (MF, 5-7,Sr., Seattle, Wash.). Playing in 52 games inthree years with the program,Shellenberger will see time at forward aswell. hen the West Coast Conference first gotits start back in 1952, the founders reallyhad only one goal in mind… to create a

convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play bas-ketball. What has grown from that original visionsome 50 years ago is a cohesive athletics league whichis competitive at the national level in 13 sports; base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s andwomen’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’sand women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Seven ofthe league's members - the University of Portland,Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University,Saint Mary's College, the University of San Diego, theUniversity of San Francisco and Santa ClaraUniversity - participate in men's and women's soccer.Pepperdine University, the eighth WCC member, fields only a women's team.

The league, now celebrating its 50th anniver-sary, was chartered by five institutions (San Francisco,Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State and Pacific)as the California Basketball Association, playing it’sfirst game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons ofplay under that name, the conference expanded toinclude Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955,and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in1956. The name was shortened to West CoastConference 1989. The current alignment hasremained unchanged since 1979, making the WCCthe third most stable conference in the nation. Onlythe Ivy League and Pacific-10 conferences have beentogether longer. The eight current members of theWCC span the western coast of the United Statesfrom Canada to Mexico. Though the locales rangefrom the pine forests of eastern Washington state tothe sun drenched beaches of Southern California, thecombined excellence in athletics and academics setsthe conference apart on the national scene and drawsthe individual institutions together in a common mis-sion.

The West Coast Conference, among the nation'sbest soccer conferences, has seen its soccer fortunesrise steadily. In 1992, women’s soccer was added tothe list of conference sports and two years later, LMUjoined the competition. In the past seven seasons, theWCC has earned 17 women’s soccer NCAA postsea-son berths, including five Final Four appearances.
