• In addition to our three Calgary campuses, BowValley College serves southern Alberta with campusesin Airdrie, Canmore, High River and Strathmore.

• Bow Valley College partners with consortia to offerprograms in Drumheller, Stettler, Claresholm,Cardston, Morley, Pincher Creek and Blairmore.

In the past year, 318 learners at Bow Valley Collegebenefited from over $110,000 in student awards. Theseawards helped learners enter programs, stay in school,achieve their academic and career goals, and berecognized for their academic achievements.

How to Register

Who Can Register?You can register for courses if youare 18 years of age or older, or ableto demonstrate to the Registrar thematurity to benefit from a selectedprogram of study. You do not needa high school diploma to takecourses at Bow Valley College.However, you must have therequired prerequisites for theprograms or courses selected.

Register by phone, mail by fax, or in personRegister at the Bow Valley CollegeRegistrar’s Office, 2nd Floor, 332 - 6 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB,telephone (403) 297-4040, orcomplete the application form on page 67 and mail or fax it to (403) 297-4887.

When to registerRegister early! Registrations areaccepted in the order received.Some classes specify a registration date.

Tuition feesTuition fees must be paid in fullwhen registering. Some paymentoptions are available for someprograms. Please inquire at theRegistrar’s Office by calling (403) 297-4040. Specific tuition feesare listed under each coursedescription. Tuition fees can be paidby cash, money order, purchaseorder, certified cheque, InteracDirect Payment, Visa or MasterCard.Personal cheques are accepted onlyat rural sites. In keeping with theDepartment of Learning guidelines,registrants with student or visitorvisas will be charged a minimum ofdouble the domestic tuition listed.Please see programs or coursedescriptions for international feeson page 61. Tuition fees are subjectto change without notice.

Financial Assistance

Part-timeThe Student Finance Board has abursary program for part-timestudies. Students can apply forfinancial assistance on a bursaryapplication up to $300 per semester.Students may be eligible forbursaries up to $600 per semesterfor some courses, if they candemonstrate financial need. Contact the Registrar’s Office at(403) 297-4040 for moreinformation. Tuition must be paid in advance. Information andapplication forms for StudentFinance Board bursaries areavailable at the Bow Valley CollegeRegistrar’s Office, as well as the Admissions and Counselling Departments.

Full-timeStudents may be eligible for a Skills Development Grant for full-time study in academicupgrading and English as a Second Language programs.

Students in Full-Time/Careerprograms may apply for a studentloan through the Student FinanceBoard. Students eligible forEmployment Insurance may qualifyfor special funding.

Bow Valley College career advisorscan advise students on theirfunding eligibility. Other fundingresources may be available through Human ResourcesDevelopment Canada.

Admissions ProcedureThe procedure for gainingadmission to the College variesdepending upon the program ofchoice or recommendation. We mayask you to complete an assessmentof your skills, provide transcripts,attend an interview and/orcomplete all requireddocumentation before reaching anadmission decision. Each full-timeapplication must be accompaniedby a $35 application fee. Successfulapplicants will be contacted by aletter or telephone call. Should youhave any questions about ouradmission procedures and policy,please call us at (403) 297-4040.

Every program has a limited numberof spaces available. Admission to aprogram is determined by the rule ofFIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED sodon’t delay in submitting yourapplication. Selection to the programyou have applied for is based on aFIRST-QUALIFIED, FIRST-ACCEPTED basis upon meeting allentrance requirements for thatprogram. Please complete therequirements as soon as possible.Once accepted, students will beregistered and a seat confirmedusing a rule of FIRST PAID, FIRSTREGISTERED. For some personalinterest programs, there are noentrance requirements.

Security clearancesApplicants for Personal Care Attendant,Hospital Unit Clerk, Hospital AdmittingClerk, Medical Office Assistant, and thePractical Nurse programs are advisedthat they will be required to provide asecurity clearance (no criminal record)at a cost of $25 for the work experiencecomponent of their program. Applicantsare responsible for applying for andobtaining their own security clearance.A criminal record will affect workexperience placement, professionallicensure and/or employment prospects.

The Business and Industry Training Departmentspecializes in career programs less than one year inlength. The department is committed to helpingbusinesses, the service industry, and the individual, gainskills that will be immediately useful in life and work inCalgary and Alberta.

Programs are designed to address a variety of diverseneeds and interests through flexible scheduling andcustomized content using a variety of instructionaldelivery modes. Programs are developed with inputfrom industry-specific advisory committees. The use of advisory committees in curriculum development and program evaluation helps graduates to be successful at finding employment by ensuring theirtraining is relevant.

Advisory committeesAll programs seek input and feedback from the learnersand industries they serve through external advisorycommittees made up of community, business, labourand industry representatives. The Business and IndustryTraining Department’s Advisory Committees examinepresent market trends affecting the future, identifiestraining needs and implications, and assists in program planning.

Arborist/Tree SpecialistCertificate (Level 1, 2 and 3)Prepare for your career as an Arborist. This programequips you with the skills, qualifications and experiencenecessary for a career in the arboriculture industry. Youwill get classroom instruction combined with practical,hands-on work experience in the industry. The programcovers a variety of topic areas including proper pruningtechniques, climbing, pruning and felling large trees,tree surgery and repair, pesticide application, snowequipment operations and basic computer skills.Includes Electrical Safety, Chainsaw Maintenance,WHMIS, First Aid and CPR Certificates. Career optionsfor graduates include park management andmaintenance, tree inventory and valuator specialist,hazard tree evaluator, ground and aerial pruning, andlandscape design and maintenance.

Prerequisites: Science 10 or Biology 10, and English 10 or 13 OR a GED (General EducationDiploma) with a minimum of 50 in science or a Bow Valley College assessment.

Program details

Ground Worker (Level I)This level includes 10 weeks of training and addressesbasic pruning from the ground (small trees, shrubs andhedges). Topics include:

• Physical fitness/climbing • Tree/water relations• Safety • Introductory pruning• WHMIS • First Aid & CPR• Tree structure and identification • Tree insects and tree diseases• Tree physiology and anatomy • Chippers & stump grinders• Tree/soil relations I • Work experience (1 week)• Tree biology

Tree Worker (Level II)This level includes 11 weeks of training and addressesclimbing and aerial pruning (large trees and takedowns).Topics include:

• Physical fitness/climbing • Computer applications • Tree species ID • Ropes, rigging and knots• Tree form and structure • Equipment - use and maintenance • Plant health care • Tree/soil relations II• Pathology and entomology • Tree selection• Infectious diseases • Aerial bucket work• Pesticide application I • Work experience (2 weeks)

Computer Technician Certificate Travel inside the computer and prepare to dodiagnostics, first level repairs, set-ups andtroubleshooting for IBM compatible, stand-alone ornetworked systems. Get hands-on training in theclassroom, plus five weeks of valuable work experiencewith a Calgary company.

Over 90% of our graduatesobtain employment in their chosen training area. Becausemany of the courses stem from a common core program,students can easily expand their skills in a number ofdirections. This approach offers career mobility whichgreatly increases the employability of graduates.

Customized programmingThe Health and Community Care Department respondsquickly to community and industry needs bycustomizing and delivering specialized programs asrequested. We have delivered customized programmingfor private and public sector organizations includingEducational Consortia, Regional Health Authorities,Alberta Health, Family and Social Services, andindividual health care organizations.

Advisory committeesAll programs seek input and feedback from the learnersand industries they serve through external advisorycommittees made up of community, business, labour andindustry representatives. The Health and CommunityCare Advisory Committee examines the present marketand trends affecting the future, identifies training needsand implications, and assists in program planning.

Credit transferWe are in the process of establishing transfer of creditwith other post-secondary colleges throughout Alberta fora number of our Health and Community Care programs.

Prior learning assessmentsIf you are interested in a Prior Learning Assessment(PLA) contact the Health and Community CareDepartment (403) 297-4843. All requests must besubmitted in writing and must be completed two weeksprior to the program start date. PLA procedures willresult in additional fees. Full program tuition fees willremain for programs.

Life Skills Coach CertificateLife Skills Coach Training is an experiential program basedon the Saskatchewan NewStart model of adult education.The goal of the program is to train leaders/instructors todeliver Life Skills programming to youth and adultlearners; to provide direction and instruction for coachesto become leaders/facilitators of experiential learninggroups; to prepare trainees to deal effectively with studentissues; and to guide students through the stages of selfdiscovery, behaviour identification, acquisition andtransferability of skills. The Life Skills Coach Trainingprogram has been designed for mature adults who haveexperience in community and human services fields andare committed to working in that environment.

There are five required courses and one elective course inthis comprehensive program.

Required Courses:

• Foundations and Coaching Theory

• Plans for Experiential Presentation

• Peer Coaching and Peer Evaluation

• Program Management

• Professional Development, Ethics and Conduct

Elective Course:

• Internship for Group Facilitation Certification

Program Length: The Life Skills Coach Trainingprogram is a loan approved full-time program of studyand is offered on an evening and weekend schedule toaccommodate working professionals. The core programis 360 hours of classroom instruction with 140 hours ofout-of-class readings and assignments. In addition,successful graduates of the program will berecommended for a 100-hour Internship for GroupFacilitation Certification.

Hospital Admitting ClerkAs a Hospital Admitting Clerk you are part of the healthcare team that has the first contact with patients andfamilies. This program provides an opportunity forgraduates from the Hospital Unit Clerk, Medical OfficeAssistant, or Dental Receptionist programs to completean “add-on” program that will prepare you for anadmitting clerk position in a hospital setting.

Admitting clerk skills, medical terminology,communication skills, time, stress and conflictmanagement, safety and wellness in the workplace, andcomputer skills will be evaluated.

Successful completion of a comprehensive writtenexamination is required prior to work experience.

Prerequisites:

• Minimum 18 years of age.

Personal Care AttendantUpgrading to Practical Nurse If you are currently an employed Personal CareAttendant (PCA), this part-time program can help youupgrade your knowledge and skills to the Practical Nurselevel. Designed for PCAs who are currently working, theprogram lets you fit your learning to your work schedule.You get credit for your prior learning as a PCA and youcan even complete some of your work experience in yourcurrent place of employment.

Divided into four semesters, the program extends over atwo-year period. High School Equivalency -GED Preparation CoursesSections I & IIMany colleges and employersaccept the General EducationalDevelopment (GED) as equivalentto a high school diploma. We canprovide you with the skills tochallenge the GED exams. Theevening classes will provide youwith a solid foundation inmathematics, science, socialstudies, reading and writing skills.GED Section 1 provides you with arefresher course to prepare you forSection II. High School Equivalency(GED) ExamsThe GED Examination consists of fivetests including writing skills, socialstudies, science, interpreting literatureand the arts, and mathematics. Youwill write these tests over a two-dayperiod, Friday evening and all daySaturday. All of the exams are multiplechoice, with the exception of thewriting skills test which is divided intotwo parts (the second part is an essay).

Note: As of January 1, 2002, anew series of GED Examswill be in place. Some ofthe changes are as follows:(1) The Math Exam willhave a Part I and Part 2.For one part of the exam,calculators will be allowed;for the other part of theexam, they will not. (2)The Interpreting Literatureand the Arts Exam willnow be called the ReadingSkills Exam. For anyadditional changes pleasecontact the Registrar’soffice at 297-4040.

GED exams are held four times ayear. You must register and pay a non-

refundable, non-transferable $130 feebefore the registration deadline. Youwill write the GED exams at BowValley College’s Main Campus.

Speech Assisted Readingand Writing (SARAW) andSpeech Assisted Math(SAM)SARAW is a talking computerprogram that teaches basic readingand writing skills to adults withsevere physical limitations. SAMcovers basic math functions andfocuses on math for daily living.For adults with limited verbal skillsor who are unable to turn a page,hold a pencil, or speak, SARAWand SAM create opportunities toparticipate in learning. Programsare designed for adult learners withbasic literacy and numeracy skillsto the Grade 6 level. English as a Second Language(ESL)Bow Valley College is the largest English as a SecondLanguage provider in Calgary, and has one of the bestESL programs in Canada. Our teachers have areputation for excellence in teaching and for catering toindividual student needs. We service a wide number ofstudents and clients, including both newcomers toCanada, and international students. Each student isindividually assessed for their listening, speaking, andwriting skills, and then placed in the appropriate class.

Upon successful completion of each level, the studentreceives a graduation certificate, and can then go on tothe next ESL level.

ESL Literacy ProgramsHow do you identify someone with ESL literacy needs?People with ESL literacy needs may have difficultyreading and writing in their first language. They oftenhave no knowledge or limited knowledge of how toread and write in English, and they may or may nothave strong oral English skills. The ESL Departmentoffers literacy programs to meet the needs of theseindividuals. Program scheduling is flexible andresponsive to the learners’ needs. On submitting receipts forincome tax purposes, students maybe requested to provide proof theyare working towards an occupationor improving their skills in anoccupation by taking courses.Please retain the receipt you receiveafter registering; this is yourincome tax receipt. Duplicateincome tax receipts are available,but it is important to hold on to all receipts for your own records.

Tuition Refund ProceduresA full refund will be issued if BowValley College cancels any programor course. Students withdrawingfrom a program(s) and/or course(s)may receive a refund of tuition feesbased on the length of attendancein the course, provided there are no outstanding financial accounts.Compassionate grounds will also be considered.

Students who withdraw up to oneweek before classes commence areeligible for a full refund, less a $50administrative fee.

Students withdrawing after this point,but up to and including the passageof 20% of the program/course areeligible for a refund of 75% of thetuition, less the $50 administrative fee.

Refunds will NOT be issued if astudent has completed MORE than20% of a program or course.

Who Can Register?You can register for courses if youare an adult, or able to demonstrateto the Registrar the maturity tobenefit from a selected program ofstudy. You do not need a highschool diploma to take courses at

Bow Valley College as a part-timestudent. However, you must havethe required prerequisites for theprograms or courses selected.

When to RegisterRegister early! Registrations areaccepted in the order received. Someclasses specify a registration date.

Admissions ProcedureThe procedure for gaining admissionto the College varies dependingupon the program of choice orrecommendation. We may ask youto complete an assessment of yourskills, provide transcripts, attend aninterview and/or complete allrequired documentation beforereaching an admission decision.Successful applicants will becontacted by a letter or telephonecall. Should you have any questions about our admissionprocedures and policy, please call us at (403) 297-4040.

Every program has a limited numberof spaces available. Admission to aprogram is determined by the rule ofFIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED sodon’t delay in submitting yourapplication. Selection to the programyou have applied for is based on aFIRST-QUALIFIED, FIRST-ACCEPTED BASIS upon meeting ofall entrance requirements for thatprogram. Please complete therequirements as soon as possible.Once accepted, students will beregistered and a seat confirmed using a rule of FIRST PAID, FIRST REGISTERED.

All applicants must:

1. Complete an application foradmission form. The application feeis $35 for domestic students,international students is $100 and isnon-refundable.

2. Provide official transcripts,statement of marks or letter ofstanding. Please submit these with your application form, astesting may not be required and itmay speed up the processing of your application.

Official transcripts for high schooleducation completed in Alberta canbe obtained through:

• The period of enrollment iscalculated from the day on whichthe program/course commences tothe last day of attendance.

• Notice of withdrawal must be givenin writing to the Registrar’s Office.

• The administration fee for allrefunds transfers is $50. This fee is deducted from the total tuition refund.

Approved refund cheques according tothe refund policy will be mailed to youor refunded on your credit card in two(2) to three (3) weeks of receiving your request.

Withdrawal from Classes and Programs• Notice of withdrawal must be given

Day Care CentreThe Churchill Park Child DevelopmentCentre, located on the 1st floor of BowValley College, provides day care tochildren from 2 to 6 years of age.
