A Huppy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year 2000 to you and all your family. Here we are now in anew millennium and I wonder what it holds for us all. I trust that no one suffered from any "bugs andbeasties" during the millennium change over, flo doubt if there has been we will all have heard about it.

So what has happened since last club night, which seems ages and ages ago, in fact it was 6 weeks agoto be precise. From the radio point of view all round it has been a very quiet period and the only activi$rof any seriousness that I participated in, and I know John MMOCCC and Jim MMOBQI did as well, wastake part in the Christmas cumulatives Contest. I only worked 4 metres and it was very hard going frommy home QTH but that is due to the hill rising to the South. Otherwise everyone else was totallywrapped up in all the Christmas activities. Talking about Christmas I hope that you got all your presentsthat you had written on your letter to Santa. I nearly did, the only thing missing was my 1000MP!

To the future, this month is once agarn is very quiet and next club night is only three weeks away sochance to relax before it all starts again. Having said that I know a few of us are taking part in the 80MSSB Affiliated Society Contest (tomorrow) so if you are interested give me a shout and I can tell youwho is taking part in the contest. Remember our first event in February is the now infamous JohnGMTOLQ's Radio Check Night so it is a worthwhile event to get all your radios checked out. For all fu-ture events please consult the events column.

On the individual operating front we have now come to the end of the first year of Colin running leaguetables. I hope you have all enjoyed submitting your entries and being able to compare how well youhave done against other club members. Remember it is all about having FUN and not to be taken tooSERIOUSLY. I do wish though that everyone who is operating in the club would submit their logs toColin as it would enable everyone to see who is actually active and what they are managing to achieve.Remember we all have different set ups so what one is able to achieve will be not possible for somsoneelse. The tables though if run for a few years will help to show on how your station is performing. Thanks Colin for yow efforts in compiling and putting the tables together and to everyone else go onsubmit your logs and let us see areal club activity table.

I Urint that is about it once again for me for this month but with a reminder that any articles for the Feb-ruary newsletter must be with Ron GM4IKU by the 27e January at the latest due to editorial and pro-duction reasons. Once again a Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year 2000 to eachand every one of you.

Thir y"* our Christmas MeaI took place on Friday, 26ft November in the "The Old Ship Inn, Port Seton".Yes a little bit early but that is basically due to the fact that most people have usually are involved in a"fed' nights out over the December period. This year 30 people turned up for the event, slightly down onlast year but again due to people's circurnstances.

The meal was at 20:00 and everyone was there more or less on time allowing us to all be seated by 20:15. Unforhrnately thequallty of the meal was not so good this year and a few complaints were made. The excuse being that it was the new chef sfirst night on the premises and that he hadn't got himself properly organised. Admittedly at the end of the evening I did receivean official apology from the Manager of the Ship.

After the meal it was down to "boogie" time and glad to see although we were small in number that everyone took part, somewith a little persuasion though. This year no real tales to tell except for some of the "girls" who will remain nameless, i.e.Tracy, Jules and Judith, lining up the Tequila Slammers !!!!l!l!!l!!!!! No comment on how they allwere later, 0r as was reported!

I tnot there are some photographs around so I am not sure whether Ron GM4IKU will have ob- 'tained any for inclusion, hopefully yes. (,See Next Months Isxce)

Overall" I still thought it was a very good night and was enjoyed by all those who attended.Whether we return there for another year or do something else well, the "decision is yours" as they

Comments from David Barlow G3PLELast years or year before winners and is it my imagi-nation or has it lost a little lustre? It has great picturesaad is very readable but I think I preferred the olderstyle.

Onty a short time to go until we have our final tables for1999. Over the past month there has been reasonable activityon the bands, helped along by a few contests. However, ac-tivity on the bands was not necessarily by club members!Only 4 updates this month, and one of those (GM4UYZ) wasto say that there was no update!. This month they were...

The new shack at GM0CLN has been reasonably busy thismonth. Most ofthe FIF new ones were during the CQWWDX CW Contest while on VHF the Leonids Meteor showerand an aurora helped the cause... 1.8MHz : England(G),Scotland(GM), LithuaniapY), Finland(OH), Czech Republic(OK), Faroe Is(OY), Poland(SP); 3.5MI{z : Croatia(9A),Morocco(CN). Germany(Dl), Spain(EA), Ceuta & Melilla(EAg), Belarus@u), N.Ireland(Gl), Hungary(HA), Switzer-land(IIB9), ItaIy(I), Luxembourg(LX), Austria(OE), Finland{OFf), Czech Republic(OK), Slovak Republic(OM), Belgium(ON), Denmark(OZ), Netherlands(PA), Sweden(SM), Poland(SP), European Russia(UA), Kaaakhstan{UN), Ukaine(UT)"Canada(VE), U. S.A.(W), Latvia(Yl), Yugoslavia(YU);7lfrIz : Iceland{TF), Macedonia(23); l0MHz : Spain@A);2ll\&Iz : Israel(4X), Argentina(LU), Lebanon(OD), Denmark(OZ), India(Vt|; Z tvIIIz : U.S.A.(W); 28MHz : Spain@A), Balearic Is(EA6), Finland(OH); 144MHz : DL(JO44,JOs3), Gr(rO64), GW(rO71)" r(JN6s), OK(JO?o), SM(JO67,JO89,JP92,KP03). That lot makes me a very'happy camper'with 46 new ones on HF and 14 more on VHF.

David GM4WLL was busy on VHF around the time oftheLeonids Meteor Shower. Like me he managed a few newoneswhichwere... I{4}lftlz : LY(KO2 ), OK(JNgg), 55(JN75, JN86). These gave him 7 more points (3 countries &4 squares) on VHF.

Jim UITAOBqI has a few new entries again but noticeably lessthan his usual haul. I guess the Christmas shopping has takenprecedence! He says "Best new one this month was MaliTZ6DXon lOm CW. Much easier to break a cw pile up when

they are operating split. It gives us minnows a chance." ...andso say all of us Jiml Time constraints and a lost spreadsheetmean that Jim could only give me totals this month rather thanexact country/band details. His improvement amounts to 16additions on FIF. (And I know he has a few more to add onVHF from his l44MHz activity in the Leonids meteor showertool!)

Plear" make sure that I receive your final 1999 updates (only

QSOs up to midnight 31112199t1) by Friday l4th January 2000(THIS CLITB NIGHT!!) at the latest. The final 1999 tableswill be published in our February 2000 newsletter. The firsttables for the New Year should also hopefully be in the Febru-ary newsletter and for that I need your first year 2000 claimsby Wednesday l9th January.

Any nqw entrants in the annual tables will be very welcomeand it would certainly be great to see more in the listing.

Why not have a go, after all it's really just for fun. Here arethe rules again to refresh your memory.

C&PS ARC Annual Table Rules(l) For a contact to count it must be made by the stationclaiming credit.(2) Contest QSOs count for credit on the condition that thestation was set up, ald all operating was done, solely by theclaimanl.(3) QSOs from portable or mobile locations will count forpoints so long as the location being used is within the claim-ant'$

home country.(4) At all times the station must be operated within the termsand conditions ofthe appropriate licence.(5) Contacts using repeaters and satellites do not count forcredit.

Good DX and73 until next month.

If you can cast your minds back one or two newsletters youmay remember that I said that it was possible to still raisemoney for our adopted charity, the British Heart Foundation, and with this money along with money from the BIIF, actuallybuy something for the local Doctors.

After consulting with my local doctor at the Cockenzie &Port Seton Medical Centre the first choice of where we couldhelp them came to trying to obtain a "Crash Kit". This kit con-tains everything that would be needed for to deal with an ini-tial major incident, i.e. road accident, heart attack, etc. Withthis information I wrote to Iain Lowis, BFIF but unfortunatelydue to the rules from the BIIF Head Office in London the"Crash Kit" doesn't count as it is not specific to cardiac prob-lems. Back I then went to my local doctor to see what hecould come up with. This time it was Blood Pressure Measur-ing Equipment. This equipment enables someone to be con-nected to it, allowing his or her Blood Pressure to be moni-tored 24 hours a day. A service at the moment that all doctorsmust send their patients to a hospital to have done. This ac-cording to my doctor definitely falls into the cardiac category.I then got back in touch with Iain Lowis, BIIF with this nextrequirement. After a few days I received a phone call fromIain saying once again he was sorry as his head office had saidthis type of equipment didn't apply to local GP's. The ironicthing is, according to Iain, that if we were going to do it for aHospital then the request was ok. The BIIF Head Office

When you figure out what the words are, they should beentered horizontally in the grid provided. Any black squares represeni spaces between words. When the grid is completedcorrectly you should have another word in the highlighted vertical box. Have fun...This months clues are...I. CARBONBIBLE. 2, APLUMDIET, 3. CIRCAME, 4. OTINCENOMOB,5. The vertical word last month was "LATTICE". Hope you got it OK and that santa was good to youl73 Colin (GM0CLN)

seemingly deems that Blood Pressure Measuring Equipment isa hospital function and not a Medical Practice function. Withthis information of I went back to my local doctor and onceagain explained the situation. He did say that, yes, the BIIF iscorrect in saying that is a hospital function but at the sametime more and more of these type of functions are now fallingon the local GP to perform. It tums out that if we want to dosomething for the local Doctors or any doctors surgery aldstill involve the BIIF then the only equipment that we couldhelp obtain is either a Defibrillator or an ECG machine. In thelocal doctors practice this is already catered for.

I haue apologised to my local doctor saying that it looks likethat we will not be able to do anything for them. He said thathe fully understood the decisions that were made but thankedus profoundly for even considering helping them through FundRaising efforts.

I here you go then the full update, so it looks like still raisingmoney for the "major pot". Even though we can not help in alocal manner what we do is still a help towards trylng to find acure for what is one of Scotland's major killers. We have allbeen touched somewhere along the line with someone eitherfamily or friends who have died from Heart Problems so re-member that when we try to raise a pound or two,IT IS GOINGTO AGOOD CAUSE.

It's almost 2000 and for some time now,the core team ofthe Cockenzie andPort Seton Amateur Radio CIub I{F con-test group have been dissecting our lasttwo performances and all in all we areimproving at light speed.

The reason for this email is to invite youalong to take part in the IOTA2000 contest with us. We will be goingto Tiree again as usual and havepretty much got all of the kit.

We hope to be placing an order in Janu-

ary for the networkable contestsoftware and building the network. Thiswill allow us to practice using thesoftware and have some simulated con-test conditions rehearsals so we can allbecome familiar and are not nervousabout using it for the first time at thecontest site.

We plan to have rehearsals for people touse the Yaesu FT1000MP radio aswell, as we will be taking two with us.This looks like a very complicatedradio but it is actually very simple to useonce you get used to it and worksabsolutely superbly.

This all looks like a lot of hard work
