Our Fathers
We all know that God is our Father. That is what we call Him in the Lord’s prayer: “Our Father who art in Heaven.” All Fatherhood proceeds from Him and takes its title from Him. Our fathers! How responsible for our welfare they have always been. Hustle and turmoil take them away from the closeness of their wife and family. What man does not desire the affection of his fami-ly? God made man to be the protector of his wife and children and when a developing child is con-fused and in real trouble, he takes over. Many fathers thoughtlessly restrict their role to provider of material needs. They are anxious about providing comforts for their families; clothing, va-cations, and hundreds of other material things which are important, but they are not the most im-portant needs. A home may be filled to overflow-ing with expensive luxuries, but children may be starving for a need so precious that it cannot be bought. The best gift a father can give to his children is companionship. It is really more than a gift, it is an obligation. Children need such companionship in order to grow into well-balanced adults. Many of our teenagers are psychologically stunted for lack of such companionship. The father is also a teacher of his children. The formative and most impressionable years are the pre-school years. By the time a child is five or six, his important standards and habits are fixed. So, fathers, the way to stop adolescent misconduct is to stop raising wrongdoers. Be close to your child; be a companions and educator. So, fathers, when your small boy or girl puts his or her hand in yours, it may be smeared with ice cream and there might be cuts on the little fingers, grasp it firmly. These are the hands that some day may hold a bible or a gun; play in a symphony or-chestra, hands that gently bind up another’s wounds or tremble, uncontrolled by an alcoholic mind. Right now that hand is yours. It asks for your help and guidance. It represents a full-fledged personal-ity in miniature to be respected as a separate indi-vidual whose day-to-day growth into adulthood is your responsibility. To all departed fathers who have lived and loved and left behind tender memories, may they have perfect peace and rest. To all living fathers, in spite of cares, disappointments, and confusion, re-member, to you has been entrusted the most won-derful things in the world, the role of molding and shaping God’s most wonderful act of creation—a little child. Happy Father’s Day.
Thank you for all you do,
Father Duff

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
