Principal’s Reflection
Dear Families,
We congratulate our students who made their First Holy Communion on the weekend at Holy
spirit Parish. Mylie O’Donnell, Chloe Duffy, Taylia Sheridan, Edward Hammer, Aiden Ellison-
De Castro, Lachlan Ammerlaan, Brendan Ammerlaan, Aadit
Kanjiraparambil, Stephanie Foo, Ryan Nguyen, Leo Nguyen, Louis
Nguyen, Jason Mathew, Lucylla Cameron, Grace McMahon and
Ashtyn Serra. A big thanks to Mrs. Emma Marshall, Mrs. Penny
Kelly, Mr. Tony O’Brien and Fr. Joseph for the role they have played in preparing our students
for this special sacrament.
This Friday the Catholic Primary School Public Speaking Competition will be held here at Holy Spirit. Over the last
weeks our year 6 students have been competing to represent Holy Spirit at the event. I am proud to announce that
representing the Yr. 6 students will be Trinity Bourke speaking on the topic “ Is Deep Sea more interesting than Outer
Space?”. I wish Trinity and all Yr. 6 students all the best on the day.
Next week Paula Sellars and myself, along with other leaders across Catholic Education Northern Territory will be
travelling to Barcelona in Spain on a study tour. This 10-day study tour will include visiting schools, religious sites and a
retreat. We are both looking forward to this exciting learning and religious experience. During our absence Emma Marshall
will be the Acting Principal.
Next Friday the 29th of September is our Footy Colours Day. For a gold coin donation students may wear their favourite
sports team colors. If your child does not have a favourite team they may wear their favourite colours. Please ensure that
clothes are sun-safe, no singlets or short shorts please. Proceeds for this day will go towards the St Vincent De Paul’s Assist
a Student Programme. Many thanks to Mrs. Emma Marshall and the Mini Vinnies student group for organising this event.
The Mini Vinnies team will also be selling Zooper Doopas at lunch time for $1 on the day.
Lately there appears to be an increasing number of students arriving after our morning assembly or when lessons have
commenced. Parents are asked to ensure that children arrive before the bell each day so that they are ready and organised for
the start of the school day. Punctuality is an important lesson to teach our children and it is vital that they learn this lesson
from a young age.
The school is looking for the donation of a drum kits for our music programme. If any family has a drum kit that they no
longer require it would be greatly appreciated by our music teacher and students if they were donated to the school.
Thank you to the families who have returned their Intention to return, 2018 form. This process greatly assists us with our
preparations and planning for next year. If you are yet to complete a form please do so as soon as possible. Enrolments are
now being taken for Transition 2018. If your child turns 5 prior to 30 June 2018 he or she is eligible to commence Transition
in January 2018. Please call into the office for an enrolment form. We also have vacancies in Years 1—6.
God bless you all and keep you safe,
Mr. Simon Duffy
Principal

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT POLICY – UPDATE
Dear Parents/Carers,
Staff, students and parents were invited to provide feedback on
the policies and procedures in place in the area of Positive
Behaviour Support Policy and Agreed Practices.
To ensure all members of Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School
are informed and updated, information is provided through our
weekly newsletter explaining policy and procedures in place.
While updating this, our Vision and Mission Statement was
used to ensure an accurate reflection of our school community.
A copy of this statement is provided below.
We encourage you to take the time each week to discuss this as
a family. Please do not hesitate in speaking with classroom
teachers or members of school leadership for clarification as
required.
Kind Regards,
Paula Sellars
Deputy Principal
Positive Behaviour Update 29: (Week 9, Term 3)
Reflection Sheet There may be occasions during learning time, in the playground,
Homework Centre (HWC) or Out School Hours Care (OSHC) that
your child may be asked to complete a Reflection Sheet. This is an
opportunity for your child to have some quiet time to record in their
words what has occurred.
The Reflection Sheet has three main questions:
What happened?
What would have been a better choice? Who have you upset?
What can I do now to make things right?
A record of this is kept on file at school, and depending on nature of
incident, may be sent home for parent/carers signature as well as
acknowledgement of receipt.
This reflection sheet may be used where a student is sent to their Bud-
dy Class for a short break or where the behaviour exhibited does not
support our Positive Behaviour Support Policy and Agreed Practices.
Where students are required to complete Reflection Sheet at HWC/
OSHC, they will be given time to sit with supervisors in a quiet space
as provided by centre. Procedures following this remain the same for
students during recess/lunch or learning time during school hours.
We encourage parent/carers to make contact with staff to clarify or
discuss as required. Copies of all policies and procedures are available
to all parents/carers upon request.
Next week – Reward Afternoon (Weeks 5 & 10)
CHANGE OF ADDRESS Has your family recently changed your place of residence?
Have you changed your phone number,
place of work or postal address?
Please contact the front office with your updated
contact details.
LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW Year 1/2, Room 6 with Mrs. Mimi
We had a very busy term three. This term in English we are
learning about information report writing and as a part of our
experience we went to the Indo-Pacific Marine. We saw many
interesting marine animals that live in the waters around
Darwin.
In HASS, we are learning about different seasons, weather and
water. We learned that every living thing needs a water to
survive. We looked at different ways we can save water from
now and just by doing few simple things we can start
saving water too.
Take shorter showers instead of a bath.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
Water your garden using watering can.
Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your mum or dad’s
car.

Monday 18th
September, 2017 Dear Parents and Caregivers,
RE: School Swimming Program Term 4, 2017 - Casuarina Pool Swimming Program begins on Monday 23
rd October (Week 3) and concludes on Thursday 2
nd November (Week 4).
There are no lessons on Friday of each week. Cost of Swimming Program is $64 per student. Payment is due to our office prior to commencement of lessons. Please do not hesitate in making contact with our front office if you wish to discuss a payment plan for this. Timetable of lessons is currently being coordinated with Royal Life Saving Instructors and Casuarina Pool staff. Lessons will take place from 8:30 – 1:15pm each day (excluding Friday). Once timetable is set it cannot be altered. This program not only looks at stroke development, but survival and rescue skills. It is important for children to learn these necessary skills and to familiarise themselves with what to do in case of an emergency. Our swimming program is a part of the Physical Education Program here at school, therefore an expectation that all students participate. To ensure children benefit from this program, we are asking parents/caregivers to inform the office of any changes to children’s current swimming level. Our records have been updated from our 2016 program, however if your child has taken part in further lessons out of school hours through your local swimming club then we must see evidence of a certificate to move your child into the next level. We only accept Royal Life Saving Certificates attained by students. For students new to Holy Spirit, please ensure we are provided evidence of a current Royal Life Saving Swimming Certificate. We must cite the original certificate rather than a photocopy. For any students who do not have a current swimming level, instructors will carry out assessment on the first day of lessons. Please do not hesitate in speaking with me should you require clarification. Kind Regards, Paula Sellars Deputy Principal/PE Coordinator
