The new Accord is filled with advancedtechnology to minimise driver fatigue on longjourneys. Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) isa unique innovation using a camera mounted bythe interior mirror, to sense line markings on theroad. LKAS calculates the amount of steeringtorque required to help you keep the vehicle ontrack and is supported by an audible warning ifyou drift off course.

Another measure to keep your driving experiencesafe and enjoyable is Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC). By using a radar device in the front grille,ACC automatically brakes or slows down yourHonda if it senses the car in front is decelerating

and will increase speed up to its pre-set limit ifthe way is clear. You can also manually adjust thedistance with steering wheel mounted controls.

You’re even looked after if the driver ahead ofyou is deemed to be a risk, with CollisionMitigation Braking System (CMBS) immediatelycoming to your assistance. An audible andvisual dashboard warning will alert you to anydanger and your speed will be reduced to avoidan impact. As with all of Honda’s developments,they only operate with your interaction. We’vejust put as many eyes as possible on the roadto make your journey safer and morepleasurable.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)

A small camera senses where the white lines on the road are and relays tiny adjustments to the electricpower steering to keep you safely in lane.


Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)

Works in three stages:1. Warning: A buzzer will sound and the word ‘BRAKE’appears on the multi-information display if the distancebetween you and the vehicle ahead drops below apre-set level.

2. Precautions: CMBS applies light braking and tightens the driver’sseatbelt if the distance between vehicles continues to drop. Buzzerand warning signs are still active.

3. Action: If a collision is unavoidable, strong seatbelt retraction willautomatically be applied to provide maximum protection for frontseat occupants before applying brakes to reduce impact speed.

Creating a uniquely smooth ridetakes some extraordinary thinking.Moving the fuel tank and enginecloser to the car’s centre of gravityhas minimised body roll whencornering. The all-new front doublewishbone, multilink suspension andgreater body rigidity means it morereadily reacts to driver input. A newdamper system helps regulate thetype of performance delivered, fromdynamic and sporty to smooth andluxurious. Vehicle Stability Assist(VSA) calculates the exact amount ofpower, brake-force and tyre grip toprevent skidding and give youmaximum control at all times.

Traction Control System (TCS) andElectronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD) work together to ensure thatyour car always stays exactly where itshould be. So no matter how theroad or braking conditions vary, wecan compensate for weight transferwithout you even lifting a finger. Evenwhen you’re towing, you can rely onTrailer Stability Assist (TSA) to reduceinstability. Finally, all of theseperformance systems are controlledby you with the latest 'brushless'Electric Power Steering (EPS). All inall, the Accord provides a stable andaccurate driving experience thatallows you to glide along roads.

Years of development and testinghas culminated in the latestgeneration of i-VTEC engines.Honda view engines more thanbeing just the power-train of thecar. Our engines are a piece ofrefined technology designed todeliver everything you need for puredriving pleasure – from sheerexhilaration and performance, tolower emissions.

There are two i-VTEC petrol enginesto choose from. For a truly premiumdriving experience with effortlesspower delivery and fuel economy,the newly developed 2.4 litrei-VTEC engine delivers. With anoutput of 200PS, and a fuelconsumption of 9.3l/100km, it hasthe flexibility to balance economyand emissions with substantialperformance. Increasing the intakevalve diameters and optimising thecam lift and valve timing hasimproved the all-important intakeand exhaust volume.

You can also choose a 2.0 litre enginethat delivers the best balance betweenpower and fuel economy with a fuelconsumption of just 7.4l/100km.

Both come with a 6-speed manualtransmission redesigned to include ashift indicator that informs you of thebest moment to change gear in orderto maximise fuel economy.

The 5-speed automatic transmissionprovides stress-free motoring, withthe option of a paddle shift function.By selecting the ‘S’ mode a sportierdrive is engaged and the paddle shifttakes full priority.

The introduction of a new kick-downfeature on the 5-speed automatictransmission offers the driver anadditional burst of speed if sorequired. All this power is easilyaccessed through convenientlymounted steering wheel controls toachieve the optimum balancebetween fuel efficiency andperformance.

Three-pointEmergency Locking Retractor(ELR) seatbelts with load-limitingpre-tensioners tighten to limit bodymovement. And active headrestsmove forward on rear-end impactto support the neck area, reducingthe effects of whiplash. We’ve alsothought about who may be sittingin the passenger seat. Airbagdeployment can be adapted to givemaximum protection for smallchildren in a child seat, giving youeven more peace of mind. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)ABS prevents the wheels from locking when thebrakes are applied in an emergency, reducing thepossibility of a skid on wet, icy or loose surfaces,and enabling the driver to retain steering control.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) ACC uses information from a millimetre-wave radarmounted inside the front grille to measure thedistance to the vehicle ahead, while vehicle speedand yaw rate sensors detect the vehicle's drivingparameters. In addition to maintaining a set speed,ACC is also able to automatically regulate both thevehicle speed and its distance to the vehicleahead travelling in the same lane, thereby reducingthe burden of motorway (or similar road) drivingand enhancing driver comfort and safety.

ACC only operates if all the following conditionsare fully fulfilled:- the vehicle speed is set between 30 and 180km/h- main switch is activated

Advanced Compatibility Engineering(ACE) Accord has been designed with aninnovative frame structure engineered to reduce theconcentrated frontal force on occupants in frontend impacts. Accord's Advanced CompatibilityEngineering (ACE) design disperses and absorbscrash energy over a larger area enhancing thepreservation of the cabin space, improving safetyfor all occupants. Additionally, ACE also helps toreduce misalignment with vehicles of different sizes.The design of Accord's structure reduces impactforces acting upon other vehicles including thesmallest of super-minis.

Aerodynamics Aerodynamics refers to theability of a car to overcome the resistance or 'drag'generated by its body as it moves through theatmosphere. The lower the Coefficient of Drag (Cd)the more aerodynamic the shape. An aerodynamicshape is more fuel efficient, quieter and keeps thecar firmly on the road. The Cd value multiplied by thecross section area of the car is the wind drag of the car.

Bluetooth® The Bluetooth® Hands FreeTelephone System (HFT) enables drivers to make andreceive calls without taking hands off the wheel. An incar speaker and microphone system operated viasteering wheel controls allows calls to be made safelywhilst driving.

Brake Assist If you have to make an emergencystop, the system detects the quick pedal actionand automatically boosts braking power to reducethe stopping distance.

Collision Mitigation Braking System(CMBS) CMBS has been specifically designed tohelp alert the driver of an impending collision or - if it'sunavoidable - to reduce the severity of impact byautomatically applying the brakes if a collision is

detected. The “eye” of the system is a radartransmitter mounted behind Accord’s grille. A radarsignal is constantly transmitted and the return echoevaluated. If the system detects a vehicle orobstruction in the road, it determines the distanceand closing speed. If the closing speed goes abovethe threshold, the system immediately alerts thedriver with a flashing indicator on the instrumentpanel and an audible alarm. If the driver takes noaction to reduce speed, the system willautomatically tug at the driver's seatbelt and lightlyapply the brakes. At the point when the systemsenses that a frontal collision is inevitable and thedriver has still taken no avoidance action, both of thefront seatbelts are retracted tightly and strong brakingis applied automatically. This automatic action isdesigned to lower impact speed and help reducevehicle damage and the severity of personal injury.

CO2 Carbon dioxide is one of the exhaust gases believed to be one of the causes of the greenhouse effect. The lower the CO2 emissions, thebetter for the environment.

Common rail Common rail diesel engines havea reservoir of highly pressurised fuel close to thecylinder heads. As well as allowing extremelyprecise amounts of fuel to be injected into thecombustion chamber very quickly, the pressuremeans the fuel forms a finer mist, so burns moreefficiently. This makes the engine more economical,and reduces noise, smoke and emissions levels.

Double wishbone suspension This wheelsuspension layout provides maximum accuracy indefining the wheel movement during driving. Theresult is precise and predictable handling of the caras well as reduced body movement during brakingand cornering. Double wishbone suspensionsystems are used in race cars.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD) This works in tandem with ABS analysingweight distribution around the car and automaticallyadjusting the braking force applied to front and rearwheels to help maintain directional stability.

Electronic Throttle Control System(ETCS or Drive-by-wire) The mechanical linkfrom the accelerator pedal to the engine isreplaced with sensors that detect the throttleposition and feed instructions directly to theengine management system. This providesinstant, directly proportional yet smooth responsesto throttle inputs.

Ergonomics Ergonomics is the applied scienceof designing a working environment, in this casethe car's cabin, in order to maximise the occupantscomfort and safety. In simple terms, that meanslocating major controls and instruments in a waythat makes them easy and comfortable to use andto see. This is extended to seating which minimisesdriver fatigue and discomfort.

Grade Logic An intelligent system built into our5-speed automatic transmissions. When the Accordis in fully automatic mode, Grade Logic recognisesdifferent driving styles and road conditions, thenselects the optimum gear ratio for smooth,seamless driving, particularly over hilly routes andthrough corners.

High Intensity Discharge (HID)headlights Instead of a bulb, the sealed HIDheadlights contain xenon gas. An electric spark(arc) passing through the gas produces an even,true-white light with a higher intensity thanconventional halogen units for improved visibility.

i-DTEC The Honda i-DTEC engine - the ‘i’ standsfor ‘intelligent’ – is a new-generation direct injectionengine that uses both the latest common rail andvariable turbocharger technology. As a result, it’ssignificantly quieter, smoother, more powerful andreturns greater fuel economy than conventionaldiesels.

i-VTEC The combination of VTEC and VTC forimproved engine performance, fuel economy andemissions.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)Identifies the boundaries of the vehicle’s lane byprocessing images from a C-MOS camera mountedbehind the windscreen. It then calculates theoptimum steering torque to keep the vehicle in thecentre of the lane and provides steering torque tothe wheel to keep the vehicle in the centre of thelane.A continuous beep sound will be emitted when thevehicle is about to cross the lane markings.

Lane Keeping Assist System operates when thefollowing conditions are fully fulfilled;- on roads with left and right boundary markings

(where markings are clear and visible)- on motorways or roads that are equivalent tomotorways

- driver has to keep contact with the steering wheel; ifthe system fails to recognise the driver’s input on thesteering, it switches itself off

- side indicators are not activated- steering torque generated by the driver does notindicate imminent lane change manoeuvre.

Torque Torque is a twisting or rotational force. Forexample, when you use a spanner to tighten a bolt,you are actually applying torque to turn the bolt. Thefurther out you hold the spanner, the more torque youapply. Low rev torque is the ability of an engine todevelop strong response (rotational force), andhence, acceleration from lower revs and speeds. Asspeed rises, torque becomes less important thanpower for maintaining high speeds.

VTC (Variable Timing Control) Changes the timingangle of the intake side camshaft relative to thecrankshaft as engine speed and load change. Thisway the cylinder filling with air/fuel mixture isoptimised for improved torque and performance,with 90% of torque available at just 3,000 rpm.

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift ElectronicControl) Varies the amount of valve lift and theduration of valve opening during the intake stroke ofeach engine cylinder. The effect is optimisedcombustion over changing engine speeds with theresult of reduced fuel consumption and emissionsas well as increased engine performance.

Variable turbocharger Turbochargers userotors to pressurise the air going into the cylinders.This increases the air’s oxygen density, improvingcombustion and producing more power. Theturbocharger fitted to the i-DTEC engine hasvariable nozzles, which boost the airflow accordingto how hard you press the accelerator – the moreyou put your foot down, the more the airflow isincreased. This produces instant, smoothacceleration, virtually eliminating the problem of‘turbo lag’.

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) VSA helpskeep the Accord on course during fast or tight turnsby detecting and correcting potential under-steer orover-steer. The system continually monitors vehiclespeed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds,steering angle, lateral g-force, and yaw rate todetect when over-steer or under-steer is imminent.When necessary, VSA automatically reduces theengine's torque and uses the ABS system to applybrakes to each wheel, as needed, to help stabilisethe vehicle. The response is so quick that theinstability may be corrected before the driver evenknows it's occurring.

Satellite Navigation system with voicerecognition The satellite linked, DVD-basednavigation system delivers turn-by-turn directions byvoice and moving map display all the way to yourdestination. The DVD also contains points of interestsuch as service stations if you should require them inan unfamiliar area. The system can recognise over550 voice commands - including many operations forthe audio and climate control systems - so the drivercan make adjustments without taking their hands offthe steering wheel.

Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) TSA works inconjunction with VSA and has been designed toenhance safety when towing a trailer. Throughvarious sensors normally attributed just to thevehicle’s VSA, TSA will initiate the appropriate brakeapplications to the wheels which will then stabiliseAccord and trailer.
