Low visibility operations for vehicle
operations
– Low visibility operations are established for an aerodrome
when the visibility reduces below given values and the air
traffic controllers /pilots are not able to see the whole of the
operational area of an aerodrome.
– This causes concern for users of the manoeuvring area as it
restricts their ability to look out for other aircraft and
vehicles in order to prevent collisions.

Initiation of low visibility operations
The Aerodrome ATCO shall:
• Recall all non-essential personnel (e.g. works contractors and
maintenance parties) from the movement area and ensure that
all their vehicles are clear of the manoeuvring area.

LVO’s cannot be restarted until the Aerodrome ATCO can verify
that all vehicles have vacated the manoeuvring area. If it
cannot be done visually then one of the following methods
must be used.
• A call from the driver, via a landline, reporting the vehicle
clear of all taxiways.
• A driver report from an easily identifiable position, which isclear of the manoeuvring area e.g. the rear of the Fire Station.

ILS Sensitive Area
• When aircraft are departing from a runway with a radiating
localiser, the protected area for that localiser shall be kept clear
of all vehicles, until such time the aircraft has passed the
localizer antenna..
