Improvements along Meadow Lane and at the junction with Great Wilson Street are still in development, linked to our plans for the city centre. Our future proposals aim to:— Facilitate the setting of the new city park;— Make streets more cycle and pedestrian friendly; and— Provide high quality public transport connections between the South Bank and the city centre.

Improvements to the Meadow Lane Junction

At present, cyclists are required to mix with traffic, which can deter cycle use.

Create new cycle lanes in both directions and improvements through the junctions. Where possible, these will be protected from traffic as a separate cycle track.

The cycle track on the north side of Hunslet Road between Meadow Lane and Crown Point Road will be two-way, with a new toucan crossing to provide safe access from the city-bound carriageway. Other cycle tracks will be one-way, in the same direction of travel as the adjacent carriageway.

Increase safety for cyclists, encouraging more people to cycle.

Footways, general traffic lanes and the central island will need to be narrowed in certain locations, where space permits. Footways that experience high footfall close to key attractors, such as the colleges, will not be affected.

The number of general traffic lanes Wakefield-bound, between Meadow Lane and Crown Point Road, will need to be reduced from three lanes to two.

The number of turning movements reduces priority given to Hunslet Road by the traffic lights, delaying all traffic (including buses).

Close Sayner Road at the Hunslet Road junction. Alternatives routes are available via Chadwick Street, South Accommodation Road, Clarence Road and Carlisle Road.

Ban the right turn from Hunslet Road into Leathley Road. An alternative route will be introduced via a new u-turn facility to the east.

Reduced congestion on Hunslet Road.

Quicker bus journeys and more reliable services.

Better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians due to the simplified road layout.

Drivers accessing side roads may have to take a slightly longer route.
