Thus, mankinds greatest problem is not; pollution, nuclear war, or even Donald Trump or Nancy Pelosi. WE are our own biggest problem! When talking about the character of the people in the last days,God gives a long list of personal traits that will be observed. Yet it is the first of these that is quite telling. For He begins by saying, But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be [wait for it] . . . lovers of self,” (2 Timothy 3:1-2). Well then, if Iis my/our problem, then how do we empty ourselves of self”? In a familiar passage, Paul reminds us of what should be our unchanging mindset. For in Galatians 2:20, he says, I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.Paul understands the problem. He also sees that the only way out is to mentally put selfto death and allow Jesus to be in control in his (and our!) life. We begin resolving our problem by remembering our confession,(see Romans 10:9). If Jesus is truly Lord, then He is the Master and whatever He says must control our life. Yet understand, Iwill not easily give up its dominion over us. Therefore, everyday we will need to pluck out our Is, so we may be able to clearly see Jesus living in us! There is at least one stage where the vast majority of people feel no fright at all. This stage is Facebook. Facebook re- cently exceeded 900 million active users. Potentially, then, depending on your privacy settings, up to 900 million people are watching what you say and do. Many who would be very careful in front of a crowd may post on Facebook with reckless abandon. God has called His people to be different (1Corinthians 6:9-11; 2 Timothy 2:21). Here are several categories to consider. What Do We Say and Post? Could someone look at our profiles and see bad language, gossip, slander, or crude and crass speech? (2 Corinthians 12:20; James 3). What People and Activities Do We Like (Support)? Do we “Like” celebrities, athletes, artists, or others with trashy rep- utations? Do we support movies, music, TV, shows, video games, or other things that are not Christlike? (Romans 12:2). What Pictures Are on Our Profiles? Do any pictures show us engaging in sin or less than godly behaviors? (Romans 13:13-14). Do any show us hanging with people or in places a Christian should not be? (1 Corinthians 15:33). “I” is the Problem

I know, I know, you think the above title proves my South Florida education is showing. Well, there certainly is a “problem,” but it is not with my grammar. It is the biggest problem in the world!

When Jesus began the world’s greatest sermon, the first thing He said was, “I” is the problem. Literally He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” (Matthew 5:3). The “spirit” of which He speaks is our ego, pride, arrogance, and vanity! But He tells us if people empty themselves (i.e. become “poor”) in this area, “…theirs is the kingdom of heaven”! Thus, mankind’s greatest problem is not; pollution, nuclear war, or even Donald Trump or Nancy Pelosi. WE are our own biggest problem!

When talking about the character of the people in the “last days,” God gives a long list of personal traits that will be observed. Yet it is the first of these that is quite telling. For He begins by saying, “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be [wait for it] . . . lovers of self,” (2 Timothy 3:1-2). He completes this roster of traits by naming various behaviors which all show how self-involved people will be! Sadly, there isn’t one item on this list which isn’t pandemic today!

Well then, if “I” is my/our problem, then how do we empty ourselves of “self”? In a familiar passage, Paul reminds us of what should be our unchanging mindset. For in Galatians 2:20, he says, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.” Paul understands the “problem.” He also sees that the only way out is to mentally put “self” to death and allow Jesus to be in control in his (and our!) life.

We begin resolving our problem by remembering our

“confession,” (see Romans 10:9). If Jesus is truly “Lord,” then He is the Master and whatever He says must control our life. Yet understand, “I” will not easily give up its dominion over us. Therefore, everyday

we will need to pluck out our “I”s, so we may be able to clearly see Jesus living in us!

God’s Love for His People

God’s love for mankind began at creation. God’s love for His people continued through the Old Testament in spite of

the faithfulness of Israel. In John 3:16 the Bible tells us that

God loved us so much that He sent His only Son so that by our obedience to His will, we could have eternal life. This was the ultimate expression of His love for us. Sometimes Christians become concerned that they have done something that will take them away from God’s love.

Romans 8:38-39 says that nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God.

This truth shows the basic character of God. 1 John 4:16 says, “God is love.” Sometimes in

the RSV translation, it says loving kindness which refers to the tender, benevolent, and loving care for His people. Inherent in its meaning is a personal attachment, a love that comes from deep within His being and is aimed toward humanity. This type of love caused God to take Israel back many times when they separated them-

selves from Him. In Hosea 2:19, the language of being betrothed to God is used. It

describes a deep relationship. In Psalm 89:33 (when discussing punishment for Israel), God

never took His love from them.

How should we, as Christians, respond to His great love? In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said

unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all they heart, and all thou soul, and with all

thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt

love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Jesus gave us the answer in John 14:23, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.” In

Matthew 6:33, Jesus also taught that Christians should seek first His kingdom and righteous-

ness. God’s love for us is comprehensive and deep. Even when we make mistakes, we can approach Him seeking forgiveness and He will forgive us. We need to realize that God’s

love is forever and we are His people. Chester Runnels
