Oxford leaders:thoughtful, effective, and responsible The University of Oxford has long produced influential leaders in all spheres. At Saïd Business School, we continue this tradition by developing leaders who navigate complexity confidently; who connect deep thinking with resolute action; and, most of all, who make responsible decisions based on a profound understanding of the wider global context in which they operate.
We are an international business school, drawing students, faculty, and partners from across the globe. Our community is a microcosm of the broader global world of business, with people from very different backgrounds mixing easily. There is no dominant nationality at the School and in every interaction you will confront your own cultural biases, test assumptions, and learn to absorb widely differing points of view. There is no room for group-think or complacency.
Our community is not limited to the School - it draws upon a rich set of relationships across the University of Oxford. Through their colleges and through structures like the Oxford LaunchPad, business students naturally interact with counterparts in other fields. They join us to explore the business implications of demographic change or how humanities’ perspectives inform values-based business decisions. Our faculty also mixes on a daily basis with academic colleagues who are conducting cutting-edge research in neuroscience, biochemistry, political science, medicine, and philosophy. New developments in these areas will drive business, suggesting to us different ways of looking at ourselves and what we do.
By bringing together in Oxford a talented, diverse range of people with varying experiences, practical and theoretical expertise, different outlooks and backgrounds, we have built an extraordinary and enduring community. Together we can create new ideas and approaches that have the potential to change the world.

Business does not and cannot exist in isolation. The big phenomena that are changing the world are occurring in the sciences, in technology, and in politics, and they are explored, reflected, and questioned in the arts and humanities.
We look at business in this broader university-wide context by connecting with the ideas that are being generated by other faculties and departments.
Oxford University has been creating leaders for centuries, partly due to the University’s distinctive collegiate structure. Every student and academic is, in addition to their affiliation with the Business School, a member of one of the University’s 38 colleges. These small, multidisciplinary communities enable academics and students in different subjects and from different cultures to share knowledge and discuss different viewpoints.
We are constantly forging more links with other university departments at every level. Many of our faculty are working at the intersection of business with other disciplines, in inter-disciplinary teams and actively co-authoring research. Our 1+1 MBA is a two-year degree for high-potential leaders, which combines the depth of a specialist Masters degree with the breadth of an MBA. Our MBA module GOTO (Global Opportunities and Threats: Oxford) challenges students and alumni to develop policy recommendations in response to global challenges from demography to big data, and is designed and delivered using experts from across the University.
We are an integral part of the intellectually rich, multidisciplinary environment of the University of Oxford
“The colleges are at our disposal, the library facilities are vast and we have resources that I wouldn’t otherwise have had at any other university. Sitting in the Bodleian Library, researching and studying modern-day business issues in a centuries old library – it’s wonderful just thinking about these people who may have been sitting in the very same seat attempting to deal with contemporary issues of the day.”

People come to Saïd Business School because they are interested in change. They want to transform themselves, their careers, their teams, their organisations – ultimately, the world.
This sort of transformation starts and ends with the individual: with how an individual thinks and how this has been shaped by the culture and environment in which they have grown up; with each person’s knowledge and connections; and with how these can be leveraged to make a difference within a specific context.
Everyone who studies at the School can tailor their programme to suit their own interests and ambitions. Degree programmes such as the MBA, Executive MBA, and MSc Financial Economics have both a core curriculum and a raft of elective courses to expand or focus students’ learning. We use a multiplicity of teaching methods on both the degrees and executive education programmes, from tutorials, lectures, case methods, individual research, and consultancy projects. The one-to-one tutorial, the cornerstone of undergraduate teaching at Oxford, is regenerated here in the form of executive coaching on all of our programmes, and as small-group tutorials as part of GOTO.
Organisations and Boards who come to us for consultancy or leadership development participate in programmes that are precisely tailored to their needs, developed with an understanding of their particular environment or context, and can be delivered either in Oxford or anywhere in the world.
Everyone who comes to the School shapes their own experience

“Doing the MBA I met so many amazing people who all passionately wanted to contribute something and redefine the way the world is. They clarified and strengthened my own thinking, and helped me find others who thought the same way, in Oxford, Mumbai, and elsewhere. It gave me a new sense of hope.”

We draw together diverse groups of people to look at problems from a variety of perspectives
In Oxford, we benefit from historic links with countries all over the globe, which means that studying here is seen as a natural option for their high-potential young leaders. Our faculty are also drawn from all over the world, as are members of our wide network of associates, partners, and expert practitioners who all contribute regularly to the work of our community.
Many of our degree programmes incorporate modules based in other countries, such as the Executive MBA, which has two modules taught in China and India, while we also facilitate student ‘treks’ on our MBA programme to many different parts of the world, allowing them to gain an understanding of what it’s like to do business there. Students have visited Japan, the Middle East, Silicon Valley, and Africa in recent years.
Increasingly, our Executive Education team is working with large, multinational organisations who value our experience in teaching and leading discussions. We may be working with a single company, but we are still delivering an international, multicultural educational experience.
“The most important thing I learned from the programme was that it doesn’t matter where you are as a female leader – whether you’re in Africa, the United States, Brazil, India or the UK – the issues we face are all the same, they are universal. But women coming together and working together can empower each other and find a way to overcome these shared problems.”

We have a demonstrable impact on world-scale problems
A university is a place for ideas. Our job as a business school within a university is to nurture those ideas, help them to grow, and then apply them to create maximum impact for businesses and organisations on a world scale.
Our academics are frequently called upon to advise governments, businesses, and world institutions. Our Research Centres focus on research with particular relevance and practical application to specific business sectors or aspects of business life.
Our leadership and other executive education programmes have stimulated growth and change in hundreds of organisations. We believe in the concept of responsible leadership, which we foster through discussion in every part of the School, from the MBA programme to research, executive education, and consultancy.
Entrepreneurship is a theme that permeates our work at the Saïd Business School. It is the subject of formal modules in the MBA and Executive MBA programmes and is explored and applied by the Entrepreneurship Centre and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. We view entrepreneurship as the ability to effectively deploy resources to devise business solutions to complex challenges, and our graduates are doing this within larger organisations, in social enterprises, and in their own innovative businesses.
Impact of Research The Major Projects Leadership Academy received a Silver Award from the European Foundation for Management Development in their Excellence in Practice Awards, in the category of Professional Development. The programme, created and delivered by Saïd Business School and Deloitte in partnership with the Cabinet Office, builds the skills of senior project leaders across the UK Government to deliver large and complex projects.
Paul Chapman, Academy Director at Saïd Business School said: “It is an honour to receive this award and it demonstrates Oxford’s commitment to provide programmes that address our clients’ needs. Working closely with the Cabinet Office and Deloitte we have designed a programme that is intellectually rigorous and focuses on developing the capability of seasoned project leaders in the public sector to successfully deliver very large and complex projects. Whereas two years ago about one third of the Government’s major projects were delivered on time and to budget, the MPLA has contributed to improving performance so now this is nearer two thirds.”
