2. 2Rev Future of Learning 2 Communication/Learning Objectives: 1. Introduce 2Rev Future of Learning Framework and Taxonomy 2. Summarize the role of short-cycle innovation/prototype design methodology (i.e., what it is and why it matters) 3. Help you place your own work within the broader context of an industry transformation thats underway 3. Agenda 3 What is the Future of Learning? Factors Fueling the Shift Future of Learning Framework & Taxonomy Role of Short-cycle Innovation A Chance to Get InspirED Q & A 4. Future of Learning 4 Future of Learning Video 5. Reactions 5 When you think about your proposed innovation: 1. What do you dream? 2. What do you dread? 3. Where does your design fit into this story? 6. Agenda 6 What is the Future of Learning? Factors Fueling the Shift Future of Learning Framework & Taxonomy Role of Short-cycle Innovation A Chance to Get InspirED Q & A 7. Factors Fueling the Future of Learning 7 1. Drive Toward Personalization 2. Explosive Growth in Technology 4. Shifting Policy Environments 3. Advances in the Science of Cognition 5. Increased Economic Pressures 6. An Ecosystem of Learning 8. Agenda 8 What is the Future of Learning? Factors Fueling the Shift Future of Learning Framework & Taxonomy Role of Short-cycle Innovation A Chance to Get InspirED Q & A 9. 2Rev as Design Lab 9 2Rev designs, launches and supports Future of Learning models and catalyzes the conditions within which they can thrive. 10. Integrative Solutions Across the Continuum 10 2Rev designs solutions across the full birth-to-26 Human Capital Continuum spanning early childhood, K-12, postsecondary and workforce development: 11. 2Revs Future of Learning Framework 11 12. Model Design Parameters 12 13. Language Matters The industry is awash in competing and overlapping language that makes it nearly impossible to have a sustained dialogue let alone to track, understand and share what we are learning along the way. 13 14. A Both, And Orientation 14 NOW NEXT FUTURE INNOVATE the System We Need IMPROVE the System We Have (Incremental = Diminishing Returns) (Cross the Chasm = Difficult, But Promising) We must engineer ways to jump from one curve to the next. Crisis Stable Good Great Learn Experiment (Existing) Prototype (New) Transform School Transform District 15. Agenda 15 What is the Future of Learning? Factors Fueling the Shift Future of Learning Framework & Taxonomy Role of Short-cycle Innovation A Chance to Get InspirED Q & A 16. Wheres the innovation? 16 vs. ? 17. The Power of Testable Prototypes! = 17 18. Short-cycle Design Methodology 18 2Revs short-cycle innovation process is informed by cross-industry lessons. Institute for Healthcare Improvement Design Thinking Google Innovation Drivers Networked Improvement Communities Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching uses NICs to analyze what works, for whom, under what circumstances; Plan-Do- Study-Act; learn together, improve together Google celebrates these principles of innovation: be open to ideas from everywhere launch early and often cultivate innovation with small teams in a shared workspace have a broad mission Stay engineering driven to foster innovation hire smart people who get things done managing is the means, not the goal IHI relies on a 90-day cycle to drive P&Gs innovation process; focus on a clearly stated problem or a specific question that needs to be answered; innovate in groups; define a specific timeframe and set of potential next step outcomes PDSA Plan, Do, Study, Act 19. Short-cycle Prototype Design Methodology 19 20. Short Cycle Innovation: An Example Problem: We are an elementary school wanting to move towards personalization, but we havent started yet (partially inertia and partially lack of knowledge) Hypothesis: If we use student facing ILPs in combination with online learning, we will more successfully personalize learning for all students, as evidenced by students moving further faster. Prototype: We will use ILP as a living profile of students in K-3 and allow them to move based on their readiness in math by using an online module. The 8-week prototype will conclude with student-led conferences reflecting on their math learning. Outcome: As a whole, the majority of students (~70%) showed greater progress over this 8-week period than the preceding two periods; the combination of ILP and student-led conferences showed promising increases in student meta-cognition; students in 1-3 were able to move based on progress rather than limited by grade level. Next Step: The school is interested in Scaling this effort. The existing group of 6 teachers will continue the work and a new band of grade 4-5 teachers will set up a new prototype. There is also investigation underway for the right LMS to serve as platform to manage the work more deeply over time. 20 21. Wash, Rinse, Repeat (Building Innovation Culture) 21 PROBLEM Define the problem youre working to address as clearly as possible SOLUTIONS&HYPOTHESES Brainstorm and priori ze poten al solu ons Clarify the suppor ng hypotheses that show how solu ons respond to the problem PROTOTYPEDESIGN Itera vely build out all of the details who, what, when, where, measured how, etc. you will need to be able to test your ideas in prac ce within the specified period (first cycle) 1 2 3 Plan (Design) Do (Test) Study (Learn) Act (Decide) Length of cycle can vary depending on what youre testing 22. Group Discussion 22 At your tables, spend 5-7 min discussing this question: Whats the single most important thing you should learn about your proposed model in your first 100 days of implementation? Why? What can you learn in your first 20 days? In a week? 23. Agenda 23 What is the Future of Learning? Factors Fueling the Shift Future of Learning Framework & Taxonomy Role of Short-cycle Innovation A Chance to Get InspirED Q & A 24. We Want You to Get With teams of entrepreneurial educators like you in mind, were designing InspirED a social learning and collaborative design platform as a place to design the Future of Learning. Curated resources, including: learning models, tech tools, info resources & more Participate in public or private networks to solve shared problems or collaborate on new model designs Engage individually or in cohorts to access interactive learning paths on high-interest topics Access 2Revs design library, including: frameworks, decision tools, design tools, etc. 24 25.
